Agenda 21
The name Agenda 21 derives from the document known as “United
Nations Action Plan for sustainable development and environmental
protection in the XXI century”, developed during the Conference of
Rio de Janeiro in 1992
Agenda because it reminds our commitments for the future;
21 because our future is the 21st century.
Agenda 21
The document, signed by over 170 States, has the following premise:
“human societies cannot follow the path they have followed till now,
increasing the economic gap among nations and among population
within the same nation, increasing poverty, famine, deseases and
analphabetism and causing continuous deterioration of ecosystems
from which life on earth depends”
invites all communities to implement Local Agenda 21 in order to:
- clearly evidence local environmental conditions;
- identify, in a shared vision, resolutions for the modern problems of the
environment.
Sustainable development
“meets the needs of the present
without compromising
the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs”
(Brundtland Report, 1987 World Commission on Environment and Development)
Sustainable development is a dinamic concept
that considers three dimensions:
environmental, social and economic.
Stop environmental deterioration
Improve life quality and equity
between generations (intergenerational equity)
Prevent depletion for
future generations (intragenerational equity)
