February 2016 Calendar of Events Feb 4 General Meeting Feb 6 Red Mountain, BC Departs Feb 8 Midweek Madness Departs Feb 18 General Meeting Feb 19 Smuggler’s Notch Departs Mar 3 General Meeting Mar 17 General Meeting 2nd Lodge discussion April 7 Game Night **Don’t forget that every Friday the Dutchmen are celebrating somewhere… see inside for Happy Hour locations. REMINDER: We are now back to two meetings per month! Mark your calendars to meet us the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month unless otherwise posted here. TRIP PARKING: First Energy Stadium - home of the Fightin’ Phils. Please park in the lot on the third base side, the edge nearest to Carpenter Technology. President Paul Schwartz Check for updates www.fdsc.org By now, winter should have finally arrived. I hope you’re getting lots of time on slopes, and taking advantage of the many opportunities the Club affords you. We still have five trips remaining in February and March, there are discount lift tickets available through us and EPSC, and you can check out the Facebook page to see if friends are heading out for the day. So get outdoors! We’re two-thirds of the way through our fiscal year. That means we’re looking for volunteers to serve on the Board, and help guide the Club next year. Elections are the first meeting in April! As President, I am also the complaints department, and hear from members who are unhappy with something in particular or things in general. I’d like to invite all of you to share your thoughts with me or any other Board member. What do you like about the Club? What don’t you like? What can we do better? If one person voices an issue, we don’t know if it’s a problem unique to that person, or something that many members share. The only way to know is for you to tell us. We’ve already opened up a dialogue on the Lodge, but there are other issues that are bound to be on your mind. To get things started, I’ll throw out a few issues that I’d like your input on, but this is only meant to be a starting point – anything on your mind is fair game! • Membership is declining. Is that due to demographics (younger people seem to not want to join organizations in general), or are we just not attractive to new members? What can we do to fix it? And how do we attract younger members? • Do you like where we meet? We know the Evergreen Club is not conducive to many types of programs, but are the programs important to you? • Do we have enough of, or the right kind of, social activities? Are there things you’d like to see us do, or events that you’d just as soon see retired? • Are we spending your dues money on the right things? Our biggest expense is the Ski Trails newsletter, and we’ve cut that expense in half during Dominique’s tenure. Should we phase out the print version entirely, and if so, what should we spend that money on? • We have a top notch instructional program, but participation in the lesson program is way down. We’ve tried to spice things up this year with a clinic-based approach. If you’re not taking lessons, why not? Please take a few minutes to drop me an email with your thoughts, or talk to me over a beer. Your ideas are critical to the vitality of the Club. THE DEADLINE FOR THE MARCH ISSUE OF SKI TRAILS IS MONDAY FEBRUARY 15, 2016 Paul You’re invited to spend the winter with Salter’s What do Ski, Skiing and Snow Country Magazines say about Salter’s Ski Shop… “The East Coast’s Best Fitting Service” and “One of the Nation’s Top Ski Shops” WINTER SPORTS Discover our Service Pledge to you! Stop by, call or visit our website. We are the ultimate ski shop in Eastern Pennsylvania. Don’t go skiing without us! SHOP 3130 W. Ridge Pike, Eagleville, PA 19408 (610) 539-8003 2 Ski Trails www.salterski.com 2016 Trips Skimeister Dave McFarland It was a nerve wracking start to the season, winter just didn’t want to arrive. Last year we couldn’t start the lesson program because of extremely cold temperatures, this year, just the opposite. But the first night of lessons on January 12th went quite smoothly. Great snow, and lots of participation- at least those that were able to get to the mountain during the freak snow squall. You still have time to sign up for the second round of clinics, which will run for three weeks, starting on February 9th. Get in touch with me or come to the registration table on Tuesday night. Special thanks to all the folks who make the instructional program possible – our great group of ski and snowboard instructors, registration personnel, as well as voucher and membership folks who volunteer their time to make it happen. I truly appreciate all the work that you do. How many of you get involved with cross country skiing when conditions permit? Would you like to be on a list of people to be contacted when an opportunity presents itself to get out on skinny skis? Shoot me an email if you are interested, perhaps we can expand that into a group activity. Might be fun? Board positions are annual terms and nominations are here again! If you are interested in volunteering, or nominating anyone for a board position, please contact any board member. Positions open for 2016: Publicity Director Trip Director Competition Director Ski Trails 3 Lodge Trippin’ Craig Leister Cherylene Shollenberger As of this writing, it appears that winter is finally upon us. Cold, Snow and Skiing! So now’s the time to grab one of those three open weekends in February at the Lodge. With a little luck, old man winter will hang in till the end of March, so don’t discount those weekends either. And yes, mid-weeks are still wide open. That being said, it’s not too early to think about spring and summer. Lodge rates drop to Summer prices on March 20th. Weekends are only $325 for the whole Lodge. With state parks, indoor waterparks and a casino all within 30 minutes, there’s a lot to do in spring and summer. Again this year we will have access to Lake Naomi for fishing and swimming… and it’s only a stone’s throw away! The online Lodge survey is progressing. We’ll post when it’s ready and where to access on the website, along with a Constant Contact blast. For now, get out on the snow before it’s gone!! Craig Program Director Marge Ehst I hope you enjoyed Buckman’s Ski Shop visit with their fabulous ski wear modeled by FDSC members! Upcoming events: March 17 - second FDSC lodge discussion. Please mark your calendars and come prepared with questions for Craig concerning the lodge. April 7 - Patti will have one of her fun game nights. I am collecting names of individuals to participate. If interested, please let me know. Again, if anyone want to share a program with the club, please let us know. It can be 10 minutes to 30 minutes in length. Enjoy skiing! Marge :-) Competition The FDSC Club Race will be on Feb 2nd at Bear Creek. We will also be having our Carving Out Cancer event that night, so the more, the better! Signups will begin at 6pm at the top of Timberline. 4 Ski Trails Hello FDSC Travelers! Finally we are having a true winter at this writing! Yes, snow! I enjoyed Bear Creek last week, and as usual, our lesson program and organization cannot be beat! Thanks, Bip Smedley, Dave McFarland, and our instructors! When you receive this newsletter, we will already have completed four fabulous trips, with more to come this month! I am ready for the Catskills, the first February trip, and the others will depart soon after. Enjoy Red Mountain in British Columbia or Smugglers Notch, Vt. Perhaps there are still openings, so check it out through those leaders. This month is probably your last chance to sign onto our wonderful Family Trip to Okemo in March, and the Vail trip is filled. That will complete our FD season. Never fear! The Trip Log for 2017 is nearly complete. I plan on announcing those destinations at our February meetings. Planning ahead is smart. To that note, I want to thank all of our travelers for the wonderful support the trip leaders and I have received during my tenure these last six years as Trip Director. Of course, I still plan to travel, but the time for some new and fresh ideas has come. I have chosen to hand over the leadership to the newly elected individual, and I wish that Director all the best. I will be happy to assist if needed. Just a little note - The Quebec Holiday trip where we skied Bromont and Mt. Orford was a big success, even though the mountains were sparsely covered with snow - so unusual! That trip gave me a few headaches up to our departure, with little snow even in Quebec, but thanks to Kurt Fehl and Ski 93, we had a wonderful time with our travelers. We even delivered ten new inches of snow to the area of the Eastern townships, and our resort was lovely. We really knew how to ring in the New Year, and the French cuisine was superb! I am so sorry about the day two “liquid sunshine” on the First Tracks trip to Mt. Snow, VT, but as always, the group made the best of it, and thanks to Diane Nolfe and her crew for that planning! I can’t wait to hear about the Big Sky trip, where we know there is plenty of snow! Hopefully many of you enjoyed our day trip to Elk recently as well. There will be a trip leaders meeting for 2017 trips at 6 p.m. before the General Meeting on March 17th. I am still looking for some leaders to step forward. The First Tracks 2017 trip in particular is asking for new leaders, giving a much deserved break to those who have run it for at least three years in a row, maybe more. As prior years, our Trip Night will be held at the first meeting in August. See you on the slopes or at our meetings! Happy Valentine’s Day and Bon Voyage!
