THE Deadline for the
March issue of Ski Trails
is February 3.
As I said in last month’s
article, January is all
about learning how
to ski and ride. This past weekend
was the Instructional Trip. We had a
full bus and some spillovers who
drove up. Everyone had a great time
and great lessons. There were some
funny moments like when the girl
held up the bus on Saturday because
she couldn’t find her lift ticket. There
was the instructor who temporarily
lost half his class when he turned right
and they didn’t follow. These little
embarrassing moments don’t go
unnoticed on the Instructional Trip.
They are shared with the whole group
at the Sunday dinner and the people
involved are rewarded with prizes
donated from Pinnacle Sports and
Greek Peak. The accommodations
were very nice and the meals were
especially good buffets on Saturday
and Sunday. In the midst of all the fun
we had people who learned something new about skiing and riding
and they left the mountain with
enhanced skills and fond memories.
Many thanks to Lori Henne, Karen
Youngwirth, George Foxhall and the
instructors and apprentices who made
the trip possible.
The lodge suffered a broken pipe
over the New Year’s holiday. There
was some flooding on the lower
level. The situation was rectified by
the efforts of Ed Soja and Diane
Ferro and the place is ready for our
guests again.
Don’t forget the Winter Carnival.
There are still tickets available. It is
being held at the beautiful new Bear
Creek. Come out for the day and
have some fun.
I hope you enjoy the second half of
the ski season.

February--- I think
of love—and what
do the Dutchmen
love more than anything is to ski. I asked a few- what do
you love about skiing? These are
some of the responses I got from
them.
"changed my attitude towards
winter"
"to have fun"
"pretty girls"
"those stretch pants"( sorry guysthey aren’t around anymore)
"being outdoors in winter"
"feeling of freedom "
"a challenging adventure"
"first tracks on a foot of new
powder"
"feeling like a peppermint patty"
"skiing with family or friends"
"exhilaration of speeding down the
mountain"
"feeling of a good carve-when it all
comes together"
"having a beer in all those different
lodges"
"a complete escape"
Which ones are your reasons for
skiing? Enjoy these winter skiing
months.

Hi to all,
As I write this I am thinking of all
the new memories the club will have
skiing and visiting the newly rebuilt
Bear Creek Ski Resort. The place
needs to be seen even if you do not
ski. If you need a place to go for a
different environment to hang out,
enjoy some relaxing time and even a
nice meal. The many fireplaces,
stone, and all the wood everywhere…comfort from the get go.
Check the place out!
The next big event for the ski club
is the Irish Wake/Spring Fling. See
the details in this issue and join us for
a night of fun.
I remind yu to get your photos to
me at or before the April meeting.
The winners will be announced at
the May meeting. (Photo Contest)

I have just one
question. Where is
Winter??? As I sit
here, it is 40 degrees,
raining, and I have yet to get skis on
my feet! I hope by the time you read
this we all will have had a chance to
play in the snow...some snow...ANY
snow!
As winter goes on I am glad to
see our numbers are on the rise
again. Membership stands at about
630 as of this writing. Congrats to
Kevin Claypoole as he gets a refund
for bringing in at least 5 new members...way to go! I have at least one
other member who is close to the
goal. I think this is one of the great
perks of the club and a big incentive
to our members to bring in new
blood.
The new roster will be available
at the first February meeting. One to
an address please, until I see how
many we give out. We get this as a
freebie printing and it is only done
once a year. I apologize for any typos
or missing information on the roster.
Some of it is due to my complete lack
of typing skills and some of it is bad
handwriting. If anything is missing or
wrong please let me know so I can fix
it. The corrections will be made in the
files but they won't be in the roster.
And in case you were wondering,
Santa did deliver the goods on most
of my list with the exception of the
snow and Viggo Mortensen....maybe
I'll try being BAD this year!
Julie
Ray Swavely, a fellow Flying
Dutchmen, was seriously injured in
December while skiing.
Let’s all wish him well.
Post a message for Ray at the
Rehab hospital.

The ski season is
in full force and I
hope everyone is getting the opportunity
to make tracks on the slopes. Some
FDSC trips have come and gone and
many are getting ready to head out
in search of fresh powder and corduroy. Hopefully your name is on
the list of one of those trips. I know
I always have a great time with my
fellow club members on the trips and
I’m sure you will too.
February is a busy time at the
lodge. All the weekends are booked.
But, there are plenty of mid-week
days available. So why not take
some time and enjoy a mid-week
stay at the lodge. It’s a great time to
ski without the crowds and then
relax by a roaring fire.
Ski you at the lodge,
Ed

The Christmas raffle was a success this
year. We paid out
$600 in prize money.
Congratulations to the winners and
thanks to everyone who sold tickets.
I want to announce a couple successful racers from the races in
January: Nancy Brandi, Randy Harper
and I took Gold; Kyle Moyer won
Silver in the Jan 2nd ASRA race at
Tanglwood. Three Dutchmen in the
first 5 overall that day. Nancy Brandi
(twice), Randy Harper, Alice Dolan
(twice), Dale Kilpatrick, and I (twice)
won Gold at the Jan 8+9th ASRA
races at Tanglwood. Kyle Moyer and
Todd Loeper scored a Silver medal
and Dale got a Bronze. Honorable
mention to Kyle Moyer as fastest
Dutchmen at Saturday’s GS, and
Nancy Brandi as fastest Female Racer
Overall in the Sunday Slalom!!
Here is a rundown of the upcoming
race events:
Feb 5-6th ASRA will be at Hunter,
and ISSA at Canaan Valley.
Feb 12th is the Whitetail trip; ASRA
will be at Roundtop and ISSA at
Liberty.
Feb 13th there should be only one
choice for you, WINTER CARNIVAL at
Bear Creek including the FDSC Club
races.
Feb 19th ASRA at Belleayre and ISSA
at Roundtop.
Feb 20th ASRA at Belleayre.
Feb 26th Roundtop R-Games start
(they go for a whole week this
year!), and ASRA is at Hidden Valley.
Feb 27th Most important race of the
year!! Council Cup at Blue Mtn. It’s
always a good time, and a deal you
can’t beat. Price is $40 (last year’s
price) for Breakfast, Lunch and Beer,
Race and Lift Ticket. Don’t miss the
Dutchmen take home the big trophy
this year!! We meet at 8am in the far
end of the lodge for registration.
Racers from every level are welcome
to participate. The Dutchmen always
have a strong showing at this race, so
come out again and race!
Best of luck to everyone racing – ski
safe, but fast!
Auf geht’s!

By the time you read
this, the lessons have
been well underway.
However, it’s not too
late to join us. The $15 registration
fee is still a bargain even if you can
only make it to two or three lessons.
In addition to the lessons, the following tests and clinics will be available.

2004/2005 FDSC DISCOUNT SKI VOUCHERS
Once again FDSC will be offering discount ski vouchers to our members from major ski areas in eastern PA and the Poconos. We will
be selling a single voucher from each ski area. This voucher is for the least expensive ticket, (usually midweek night) and can be upgraded
as necessary when the voucher is exchanged for the lift ticket. Be sure to have your current FDSC membership card available at the ski
area ticket window.
Please buy ahead of time to be ready for any last minute ski plans since most unused vouchers may be returned at the end of the season. Please note, ALL unused vouchers MUST BE RETURNED to the salesperson you purchased them from, with a self-addressed
stamped return envelope, BY THURSDAY, MARCH 18, 2005. NO EXCEPTIONS! Cash will not be accepted. Please make checks to
“FDSC” only.
Jack Frost/Big Boulder have youth vouchers for children, teenagers, and young adults, ages 6-21. This is a great opportunity for family
members to take their kids along at a reduced price. There is no weekend upgrade for this voucher!
Don’t forget about Eagle Rock Ski Resort, located outside of Hazleton. This ski area has an elevation of 1700 ft., which can result in
much more favorable ski conditions compared with the surrounding areas. These vouchers are good on weekend days and are available at
a great price. Their grooming is awesome and there are little to no lift lines! These vouchers are non-refundable.
Be aware that when using a special voucher for Blue Mountain on the designated days, the face value is $20.00. You must pay the
upgrade to the current ticket value for that particular day.
Blue Marsh is inviting Flying Dutchmen and their families to Ski, Board or tube for $10 anytime Monday thru Friday.
Don’t forget Spring Mountain. This is a wonderful beginner hill. So much fun so close to home.

A DAY OF FUN FOR EVERYONE!!
Feb. 3rd Program Meet your board of
directors from days gone by. That
mild mannered person sitting next to
you with the grin on his face could
be an ex-board member. Come on
out the night of the 3rd and see who
steered the club from the 50s into
the 21st century.
Feb 17th Program - Tanna the
baker from Churchill's in Pottstown.
If you are fond of "over the top party
desserts", don't miss this night.
Tanna works with fresh fruit, chocolate, exotic flowers, unusual icings,
and just plain good stuff. No promises, but when she does public appearances, she normally brings samples.
March 3rd Program - The Flying
Dutchmen present "The Gong
Show", a series of local talent presentations with the accent on local
and probably not talented. We will
have a famous Master of Ceremonies
and gong player. What we need
from you is to donate about 4 minutes of your time to do a skit with
some of your friends. Eight minutes
if you practice it once. Remember the
MC will gong you if the audience
gets rowdy. Swell prizes for 1st, 2nd
and 3rd places. See me for details.
Nat
Congratulations to

Everything I Need to Know About Life
I Learned From a Snowman
It's OK to be flaky once in a while
It's OK if you're a little bottom heavy
Wearing white year-round is acceptable
There's no stopping you once you're on a roll
When life dumps snow on you, make snowballs
Just like snowflakes, each person is unique
You've made it when they write a song about you
It's OK to have an occasional meltdown
You always lose weight in the summer
You can weather any storm
Don't get too much sun
The key to life is to be a jolly, happy soul!

You can SEE the
QUALITY in our SERVICE SHOP
Is it because we have the BEST TUNING EQUIPMENT you’ll find? ... Our brand
new Wintersteiger Sigma Series belt and stone grinders offer unsurpassed
results ... and it is the area’s only SNOWBOARD STONE GRINDER.
It could be the over 11 years of experience our Shop Manager Rich brings to
the job ... his “Handcrafted Machine Tunes” set the standard.
Maybe it’s our EXCLUSIVE Ceramic Disc Edger that
duplicates the precise factory edge bevels and polish.
Then there’s nothing like the ability to see and talk to the
person who works on your gear to ensure your satisfaction.
Don’t take anyone’s word for it ... See for yourself what
the combination of the BEST EQUIPPED andSTAFFED
shop in the region can do for your enjoyment on the snow.
