Come Celebrate our
18th Anniversary
with Special Guests-
Ro y Rob erts
&
The King Bees!
Roy has come a long way from being a guitarist
in the sixties with such legends as
Eddie Floyd, Dee Clark, Stevie Wonder,
William Bell, Solomon Burke,
and Otis Redding.
“A Roy Roberts show is an irresistible musical odyssey, a
sweat drenched pilgrimage through the back alleys of the
blues and the glory years of soul music. There aren‟t many
performers on the scene today who know the importance of
“entertainment” like Roy Roberts.”
- Gary Erwin, President
Low-Country Blues Society
THE KING BEES have been Stingin' & Swingin'
the Blues for over 20 years.
"The band is led by the sassy Penny Zamagni on
bass and vocals; she can belt it out with the best of
them. She's backed by a superb band highlighted by
the burning riffing of guitarist Rob Baskerville."

Roy Roberts "heats up the place"
with his dynamic showmanship,
singing, and guitar playing.
Roy Roberts became hooked on music while growing up in a small town
in Tennessee, listening to blues and R&B on the radio. Jimmy Reed‟s
“Baby What You Want Me to Do” was the clincher, and at the age of 14,
Roy worked on a nearby farm to earn the money for his first guitar, a
mail-order Sears Silvertone. After he turned 18, Roberts moved to
Greensboro, NC, and began playing with local bands and eventually
picked up touring gigs with such luminaries as Eddie Floyd, “Little” Stevie
Wonder, Dee Clark, and Otis Redding, while fronting his own band, The
Roy Roberts Experience, on the regional club scene and Southeastern
beach town circuit.
From the mid-„60s into the “disco” years, Roberts worked as a session
man, began releasing his own string of singles, spent time in the country
music scene, and ran a music studio in Virginia.
One day in the early nineties, he heard a young Robert Cray singing the
blues on the radio. “That cat‟s got my style,” he declared, and got the
blues fever once again. Besides recording his own material on Rock
House, Roberts has produced albums for the label by Priscilla Price, Lou
Pride, Chick Willis, Skeeter Brandon, Floyd Miles, Eddie Floyd, and many
more. Roy continues to record and produce records for his label, and
tours the U.S. and Europe regularly.
After receiving numerous awards, Roy has earned his place among the
finest artists playing blues today.
THE KING BEES are used to rockin'
their blues in some great settings
They‟ve performed in Rome, New York City, Paris, Amsterdam. Their
deep love of the genre, their keen musical sensibilities, and their pure
pleasure in performing translate into any language.
Founded in 1987 by guitarist/organist Rob “Hound Dog” Basklerville
and singer/songwriter/bassist, Penny “Queen Bee” Zamagni, THE
KING BEES cut their teeth traveling to Mississippi & the deep-South to
learn first-hand form the real-deal blues folk. They honed their skills
sitting in with and backing up many blues titans – Bo Diddley, Tinsley
Ellis, Billy Branch, Mojo Buford, Big Jack Johnson, Sam Carr,
Frank Frost, Lazy Lester, Ronnie Earl - these are only a few who've
invited The 'Bees to share the stage. But what has most refined and
sharpened their cut-to-the-bone talent are the years spent on the road
with some of the most legendary of blues greats, such as Carey Bell,
Nappy Brown, Jerry McCain, Chick Willis, Chicago Bob Nelson, and
others.
But don't think The King Bees are merely a superior back-up band.
Having learned at the feet of the greats throughout the deep-South has
amply prepared them to forge a smoldering, rocking, soul-stirring sound that's all their own. Over the many,
many miles logged in the States, and in numerous European tours, they've proven that they can raise the roof at
prestigious concert halls such as Lincoln Center NYC, shake the stage at European festivals, bring the crowd to
their knees in a juke-joint way down South. They had no problem gaining new fans during B.B. King‟s 80th
Birthday Tour. Their CDs and original tunes have received rave reviews, and they have produced several festivals
in Western NC to help spread the word of the Blues.

Hello BluesFans,
Well, we have reached another milestone ... 18 years of "Keepin’ Carolina Blue." That is a feat in itself
considering this organization is run strictly by volunteers. Many societies don't make it this far. You lose some
people, people even burn out for a while, but we always come back to what we know, the Blues and our mission.
It's important for us to keep the music alive, promote musicians and cultivate the young up-and-coming ones. It's
our responsibility, and it is fun at the same time.
As we enter a new year, we have great things coming up for you. Of course, we have …
Roy Roberts & the King Bees
th
for the 18
Anniversary Celebration, sponsored by Cricket
Communications & their new Muve Music plan. Gonna be a great
time in the city that night!
The next two months will feature our contest 2nd & 3rd place winners
who will also host the jams.
May:
Nita B & the Swinging Soiree;
June: The Bill Miller Band (by the way... it's Bill's Birthday too!)
I would like to thank all of you for your membership, support, and hard
work that you put into making this society what it is. As we go forward
and aim for 20 years, we will be a stronger, more influential and
integral part of Charlotte and the surrounding area and a resource for
all that is Blues.
"Let your hair down, baby. Let's have a natural ball.
If you don't let your hair down baby, we can't have no fun at all."
See ya at the party and we'll "Have a natural ball"!!!

THANKS to

Motor City Josh put on a great show in March … and was a great jam host too!
It was great to see him back in our town – and for many, it was their first time witnessing

Robin Bullock
Celtic/American String Wizard in Concert
April 8th @ 7:30
The Charlotte Folk Society's next Gathering on Friday, April 8th, features Robin
Bullock, described by the Baltimore City Paper as "a Celtic guitar god." Robin is a
prolific composer and virtuoso multi-instrumentalist interpreting the ancient melodies
of the Celtic lands and their vigorous Appalachian descendants on acoustic guitar,
cittern, and mandolin – where lightning-fast fingerwork one moment is perfectly balanced with tender, quiet intimacy the
next. Robin effortlessly creates a magical world for the audience with his instrumental wizardry, taking them on a
journey to the heart and soul of Celtic and American traditions.
The concert gets underway at 7:30 PM in the Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Avenue, in the edge of downtown
Charlotte. Front doors open at 7 PM. Accessible entry is available through the ground-floor door on the right side of the
building. CFS Gatherings are family-friendly, open to the public, and free. Refreshments are served in the Café
downstairs after the concert.

Big Jack Johnson
July 30, 1940 ~ March 14, 2011
Big Jack Johnson has passed away March 14 in his hometown of Clarksdale,
Mississippi, after a long battle with heath issues. He was 70 years old.
Big Jack's inventive, energetic, Delta-rooted guitar, rich confident vocals, down
home songwriting, and larger than life stage presence made him one of the
most celebrated bluesmen of Mississippi. His long music career included much
national and international touring, many amazing record releases, and a huge
amount of praise and respect.
Big Jack rose to prominence in the early 1960s working as a key member of the
legendary Jelly Roll Kings, a champion blues band which also included Frank
Frost and Sam Carr. Big Jack first appeared on record in the 1960s as the
guitarist on two famous Frank Frost albums: Hey Boss Man on the Phillips
International label (an offshoot of Sun Records) from 1962, and My Back
Scratcher on Jewel from 1966.
In the late 1970s, Michael Frank debuted his Earwig Music label with The Jelly
Roll Kings / Rockin' The Juke Joint Down which also was a recording debut for
Big Jack's great vocals. Soon afterward, Big Jack Johnson would start a solo
career for himself, independent of the Jelly Roll Kings. His solo debut album,
Oil Man (Big Jack used to hold down a day gig delivering oil barrels in
Mississippi) on the Earwig label was released in 1987. This led to additional
recordings for Earwig, M.C. Records, Rooster Blues, and more. There was also a
nice Jelly Roll Kings reunion album called Off Yonder Wall that came out in 1997
on the Fat Possum Records. Additionally, Big Jack appeared in the influential 1992 documentary movie Deep
Blues. He was a popular festival and club entertainer, a warm and hospitable person, and an amazing musician.
(He was a featured guest for Charlotte Blues Society in the early „90s.)
Big Jack Johnson was the last original member of the Jelly Roll Kings. His passing leaves a gap in the blues that
will never again be filled. His amazing performance of "Catfish Blues" from the movie Deep Blues can be found on
YouTube.
-- Excerpt from Bob Corritore, Blues Blast Magazine
A Standout Performance on Home Court
Buddy Guy made a little news and delivered a lot of blues on a chilly January night at
his club, Legends. The show – at just over two hours – featured a healthy, happy
Buddy who performed with enough high energy to make players half his age gasp for
breath. At 74, Guy shows no sign of slowing down. He was there to please another
sold-out, adoring crowd during his annual, month-long home stand at Legends.
This is the first year that Buddy‟s January series was showcased at his new Legends,
just one block north of the old club. The new digs feature state-of-the-art sound,
lighting, and video systems, a world-class kitchen and two floors. On the second, you‟ll
find two bars, matching the two downstairs, as well as pool tables and a large
dining/drinking area with a wall-sized TV broadcasting the show downstairs.
Décor includes checkerboard floors, museum-quality blues memorabilia from folks like Howlin’ Wolf,
Willie Dixon, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and hundreds of rare photos encapsulated in the bars. Buddy has done
a good job of retaining the funkiness of a South Side hangout, while bringing every internal function of the club
completely up to date. The new Legends is somewhat larger (500 capacity) than the former location, but thankfully
has kept its blues bar feel.

Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins
July 7, 1913 - March 21, 2011
Pinetop Perkins began playing blues in the late 1920s, and was widely
regarded as one of the best – and certainly most enduring – blues pianists. He
forged a style that has influenced three generations of piano players, and
continued to be the yardstick by which great blues pianists are measured until
his death at age 97.
Pinetop started out playing guitar and piano at house parties and honky-tonks,
but dropped the guitar in the 1940s after sustaining a serious injury in his left
arm. He worked primarily in the Mississippi Delta throughout the 1930s and
„40s – performing with Sonny Boy Williamson on the King Biscuit Time radio
show; touring with slide guitar player Robert Nighthawk; working briefly
with B.B. King in Memphis; and touring and recording with Earl Hooker
during the early „50s. Pinetop is mostly known for his 12 years in the Muddy
Waters Band during the pinnacle of Muddy‟s career. In 1980 Pinetop and
other members of Muddy‟s band struck out on their own and formed the
Legendary Blues Band – a group that recorded two records for Rounder and
toured extensively, culling several GRAMMY® nominations.
When Pinetop left the Legendary Blues Band to concentrate on solo work, it only took two years for him to cut his
first record as frontman and pursue an ambitious tour schedule. He was featured on several nationally syndicated
news and music programs, and appeared in numerous movie productions and TV and radio ads. He has also
headlined nearly every major showcase room in North America and most of the major festivals around the world.
The irony of Pinetop‟s career is that he didn‟t blossom as a headliner until his eighth decade – a phenomenon that
resulted in the release of 15 solo records in 15 years, beginning in 1992.
His 1997 release, Born in the Delta, and 1998 collaboration with Hubert
Sumlin, Legends, were both nominated for GRAMMY® Awards – in 1997
and 2000 respectively. This was followed by a 2005 GRAMMY® nomination
for Ladies Man, and that same year he was also presented with a Lifetime
Achievement Award at the GRAMMYs®. Aside from his well-deserved
GRAMMY® recognition, Pinetop also received a National Heritage
Fellowship in 2000 from the National Endowment of the Arts. In addition,
he continued to win the Blues Music Award for best blues piano every
year until 2003, when he was retired from the running and the award was
renamed the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year.
CDs and DVDs continued to be released over the past five years. His last
recording, released June 2010, was Joined at the Hip, a collaborative
project with Willie “Big Eyes” Smith – which received a Grammy for Best
Traditional Blues CD.
Though his touring had slowed, he played musical dates in Austin until the
last few weeks of his life, and had more than 20 scheduled shows at the
time of his death.
You can honor Pinetop's legacy by

Foundation. Donations can be

Not your usual Blues … Davina - April 1 @ DDI
"Hardest -working Blues woman in Minnesota,
but … two things remain consistent at all her shows, though: her throaty but cushiony voice, which has a sort of
hard-mattress comfort to it that's part Bonnie Raitt, Etta James and a little Amy Winehouse, and her band's
rollicking New Orleans flavor, driven home by dueling horn players and a bayou-thick standup bass”
(-- Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune)
Jimmy Thackery - April 2 @ DDI
He'll always unleash an intense volley of
rockin' blues guitar guaranteed to leave crowds emotionally spent. His double edged
guitar dynamics allow him to fire off tracer missiles, bend a note so it will fit under a limbo
bar, run off dive bomber riffs, and find space within the trembling of one stinging note.
Tinsley Ellis – April 16 @ DDI
"Feral blues guitar...non-stop gigging
has sharpened his six-string to a razor's edge...his eloquence dazzles...he
achieves pyrotechnics that rival early Beck and Clapton." (-- Rolling Stone)
Lucky Five – April 29 @ DDI
Don’t let the boy band look fool you:
Lucky Five is a great live band. These kids rock with the honesty of the
Busboys and the intensity of Fishbone with riffs rivaling Carlos Santana
making for an overwhelming wall of energetic sound. (-- M. Pulmides)

The Charlotte Blues Society (CBS) is dedicated to the promotion
and preservation of the American Blues tradition through the presentation
of concerts, forums, workshops, and educational programs in Charlotte
and surrounding areas. Founded in the Spring of 1993, CBS has steadily
grown in membership and popularity in support of this musical art form.
CBS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by a Board of
Directors and is an affiliated member of The Blues Foundation the
umbrella organization for a worldwide network of 165 affiliated Blues
societies and has individual memberships around the globe. The Blues
Foundation produces the Blues Music Awards, Keeping the Blues Alive
Awards, Blues Hall of Fame Induction, and the International Blues
Challenge.
CBS members gather on “BLUESunday,” the 1st Sunday of each
month, 8:00 PM, at The Double Door Inn.
Meetings include
announcements and updates, special guests, and an Open Mic Blues
Jam. BLUESunday is free to CBS members and only $5.00 for nonmembers. The Board of Directors also meets every 1st Sunday. Meetings
are open to the membership.
Members receive a monthly newsletter and free admission to
monthly meeting entertainment (unless otherwise posted). In addition,
members receive discounts and co-sponsored or CBS-advertised events.
Annual dues (12-month period) are $20~ Individual, $35 ~ Family, and
$75 ~ Sponsor Membership. Corporate sponsorships and individual
contributions are welcome and are tax deductible (excluding dues).
The CBS Bluesletter is published monthly and distributed to
approximately 600 readers. It includes information on Society activities, a
local blues calendar, and a variety of blues-related items of interest.
CBS is proud to call The Double Door Inn home. The Double Door
Inn, winner of the 1994 Keeping the Blues Alive award from The Blues
Foundation, is located at 1218 Charlottetowne Ave., Charlotte, NC (704376-1446) Over the past 35 years, the DDI’s stage lights have shined on
Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, Marcia Ball,
Saffire ~ The Uppity Blues Women, Lonnie Brooks, Eddy “the Chief”
Clearwater, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Luther Allison, just to name a few.
(And that doesn’t even include the countless local and regional performers
who otherwise would not have had a stage to stand on.) Thank you,
Double Door, for all your support for live blues, zydeco, reggae,
Americana, and most of all, your support of the Charlotte Blues Society!
