Made in Sweden for the World Champions
The search for the right blade can be a huge challenge, even for the most experienced players. The best blade
for one player is not necessarily the best choice for another, as we each have our own personal touch and style,
and we tend to react to blades in different ways.
At STIGA we make this important choice easier by ensuring that every blade is of superior quality, and we make
blades with the variety of special playing characteristics demanded by experienced players and coaches.
Wood
Our design process begins by considering the playing characteristics of each of the woods we use. Remember
that we’re talking in general terms here, since each tree, and even each set of wood, is different. Fortunately,
here at STIGA we benefit from having played with hundreds of versions of particular models, so we have
learned from vast testing and experience how to design the blades “personalities” to perfectly suit the next
generation of World Champions.

Seasoning
Careful attention is required to guard against drying the wood too rapidly, particularly in wood with thicker
dimension. If not dried properly, the non-uniform stresses involved can cause cupping or twisting upon
subsequent re-sawing or working. Once wood has been dried, it is allowed to “rest” in a climate controlled
environment for several days to several months.
Glue
The use of different glue results in different playing characteristics. Different woods need different glue for best
performance. At STIGA we use the best glue and gluing techniques for the best results for each type and
combination of wood.

BLADE TECH SPEC
The WRB system accelerates the blade face for faster
returns, more power and extra sensitivity of touch.
The STIGA TUBE is a technology where the middle
veneer with ”micro-channels” lengthways in the middle
ply of the blades. The channels are then filled with
different materials depending on the blade’s desired
characteristics.
The CR system is when front part of the blade is UVfinished, which yields a reasonably increased speed to
the ball.
The Crystal Technology increase your speed.
Normal blade treatments use regular lacquer, but
Crystal Technology employs a transparent hydrophilic
gel lacquer that STIGA specially developed.
Oversize. The thicker blade offers approximately 10%
extra speed compared to conventional blades. Larger
head offers extra stability of touch and feel.
The NCT Technology blades use our nano technology.

The very unique CC blades are developed in close cooperation with Liu Guoliang, Xu Xin and other members
of the Chinese National Team. The Chinese team is always talking about how important the trajectory of
the ball is. With a longer trajectory you can push your opponent away from the table and take control
of rallies and the game. Long trajectory and power were the primary demands of the Chinese National
Team, so in combination with STIGA’s know-how in blade manufacturing, the CC5 and CC7 were developed

The Optimum CARBO combines 5-ply of premium wood with
four ultra-thin layers of carbon fiber to create the fastest blade
in STIGA’s Optimum family. Similar to the Optimum PLUS in
construction, but stiffer with a larger sweet spot, the Optimum
CARBO is built for speed. Like STIGA’s other Optimum blades,
the Optimum CARBO features Crystal Technology to harden
the surface of the blade surface thus increasing speed and
performance.
The Optimum SEVEN turns the traditional 7-ply blade formula
inside out. Our engineers learned long ago that if you do things
the same way that everyone else does, you will get the same
results. In this case, that wouldn’t suffice as we charged them
with creating a faster blade that still had outstanding balance.
The solution was to make the center core thinner and the outer
plies thicker. To this, we’ve added our Crystal Technology to
harden the surface of the blade, thus increasing its speed.

A blade for those who demand extreme speed, but won’t tolerate
a loss of feeling or control. The Titanium 5.4 blade is built around 4
ultra-thin layers of titanium and 5 layers of wood veneers. Instead
of adding multiple sheets of titanium, our engineers developed
a special technique to mix the ultra-thin titanium together with a
unique bonding glue. This special technique guarantees consistency
throughout the complete playing surface and makes the blade

On the outside of the toe you will find Alumesh, a material that

during the 1960s, more or less every school, every private house
and every company had table tennis tables for pupils, families and
employees on which to play. Furthermore by sponsoring big
competitions with tables, the STIGA logo flew around the world
and attracted media attention; world champions like Hans Alsér,
Kjell Johansson and Stellan Bengtsson were contracted, the effect
was the STIGA name was associated indelibly with table tennis,
globally respected, an unrivalled reputation.
The name STIGA became synonymous with quality, progress,
fun, and success; in addition the company seized the initiative. In
their development work they employed Swedish stars and paid
them the best salaries in the table tennis world at the time. Alsér,
Johansson and Bengtsson left their mundane jobs and became
the first professional athletes in Swedish national sport.

DURING A PRESS CONFERENCE before the Swedish Open
Championships in Stockholm in November 2011, Chinese men’s
team national coach, Liu Guoliang, was asked how he regarded
the threat from Germany. He answered that Germany was good
but that the country he respected the most was still Sweden.
It was an opportunity which the players seized with passion; also
they accepted the responsibility bestowed. They trained better
and harder than their competitors and, when their success peaked
in the first half of the 1970s not only did a media fuss result, a
standard had also been set. It proved a major inspiration for the
next generation, a new generation duly emerged, a generation
who would continue the legacy in the 1980s and beyond.
No wonder Liu Guoliang said what he said before the Swedish
Open and no wonder he choose to stay one week in the town
Eskilstuna with his squad to practise when the tournament had
finished. The reason was that in Eskilstuna the STIGA heritage of
making things better and better is now managed.
The answer may be considered as being a polite comment, paying
respects to the host but it did show a mark of reverence to a small
country in northern Europe which, from time to time, has overshadowed the huge country of China in its national sport.
Unquestionably, without STIGA this would not have happened.
Without STIGA, Sweden would have had no world champions
because it was STIGA, who back in 1944, started to produce their
own table tennis equipment; always with the aim to do better and
better, until they became number one. In close collaboration with
the Swedish Table Tennis Association they made table tennis a
sport for every Swede.

THE FINAL RESULT OF THE PRODUCT depends on thickness and

“To pick the very right trees at the very right moment is decisive”,
Bandstigen continued. “We are very close to our raw material.
We literally pick out the trees from all around the world that we
want to use in our production and since we are financially strong, we
also have the possibility to buy big quantities when the trees are
exceptionally good but we are never satisfied. Everything we do,
we want to do even better.”

TODAY THE LINKS BETWEEN STIGA AND CHINA are closer than
ever; from the very beginning STIGA was very open to the world
of table tennis and contracted young successful foreign players.
STIGA continues the tradition and today has some of the very
best young players from China are contracted; notably Xu Xin and
Guo Yue. The two youngsters follow an established tradition of
playing with STIGA blades that started with
Liu Guoliang himself, a legend in his own lifetime. He became the
first male Chinese player ever to win singles gold at an Olympic
Games when he succeeded in Atlanta in 1996; additionally three
years later he was crowned Men’s Singles World champion. On
both occasions he used a seven ply STIGA Clipper blade that
incorporated red blocking veneers.
Interspersed between the training sessions in Eskilstuna, the
Chinese team visited the STIGA factory in Eskilstuna where the
blades are made. STIGA is the sponsor of blades to the Chinese
National Team and Chief Executive Offier, Mats Bandstigen, had
profound discussions with the Chinese on how to develop the
blades even further in the future.
“Blade development and production is at the heart of all the table
tennis equipment we sell”, Mats Bandstigen explained to the
players. “It is a sort of scientific skill to find the perfect balance
between weight, speed and playing feeling. We have five to nine
layers of veneers in our blades. How fast the blade will be is very
much decided by the middle veneer; then you have blocking
veneer and outer veneers.”
Sweden and Northern Europe is still the home base for STIGA but
never before in the company ́s long history has it been as open to
the world as it is today. The full table tennis assortment of STIGA
equipment is sold in 140 countries!
In the fast-growing Chinese market STIGA has been very shrewd
by contracting key players and key persons in the Chinese organization to start long term relations. Recently STIGA choose to set
up a subsidiary company in China, instead of working through
single distributors. The head office is situated in a fashion district
of Beijing, where some 25 people work under the lead of former
Chinese national player Huang Dawei. He has played table tennis
and lived in Sweden for many years and is familiar in both cultures
and languages.
THE CHINESE ADVENTURER BANDSTIGEN and his crew see a
long and exciting journey into the future. The market has a tremendous potential in a country where some 15 to 40 million people
are playing on an active regular competition basis and where the
hobby market could involve a couple of hundred million people!
“We have a solid ground to build the future from”, Mats Bandstigen
explains. “Not only in China but in all countries we are established.
We are very proud of what we have achieved. We have had a good
profit and have earned some money over the years but satisfied
we are not.”
To maintain an eager and dynamic STIGA, Bandstigen always
engages competitive and passionate people as employees.

products – blades, rubbers, nets, bags, balls, tables – everything. “

To have access to the STIGA Elite Center has meant
a lot to Danish Table Tennis. In today’s table tennis
world it is vital to have a big and high-level training
group at every single training session. With the
STIGA Elite Center we have this opportunity, and
we have all the Danish national team players under
the same roof. That means that we can focus very
hard on each individual player and make sure that
they are making the right progress.
In order to always have a very high level of training
for every session, we always make sure to frequently
invite guest players who give us extra energy in the
training. Sometimes we also invite national teams
to our center to increase the training level. China,
Japan, Sweden and other national teams have joined
us for training, and this is very valuable for all parties.

GLOSSARY
BLADES
Elasticity: The control of the ball is affected when the ball
gets in contact with the bat. The elastic properties of a blade
make you feel this contact. It depends on the players what type
of elasticity he or she likes best. Take these categories into consideration and you will surely find the right blade for you.
Elastic: Offering low speed with maximum control. Mostly
used by the cautious defender.
Feeling Elastic: The enhanced touch and feel characteristics are a distinct advantage for players who like to be in command of control and accuracy for the allround spin game.
Power Elastic: Power elastic blades benefit the spin player
a wide variety of attacking styles.
Nearly Stiff: For consistent powerful forehand and backhand top spinning loop play. Nearly stiff blades are ideal for
players who want to set the momentum and dictate the play.
Stiff: The ultimate selection for the direct power-hitting player
who primarily concentrates on pure speed than control.
RUBBERS
Sponge hardness
Soft: Soft sponges provide a better ball control. The spin
remains the same while the speed is slightly reduced. Common
among players that what to have a great sound during their
game.
Medium: Medium sponge is superb for active and powerful
players. A well balanced relation between control, speed and spin.
Hard: These sponges provide more speed but less control of
the ball when striking the ball.
SURFACE
STICKY: This rubber sheet offers much control and is very
sticky, which provides plenty of spin when striking the ball.
CONTROL ELASTIC: They develop spin elasticity even at the
low speed, and give you more control and more fun. Suitable
for control-minded players that want to have the extra touch
in their game.
STICKY ELASTIC: Slightly sticky rubbers with very good spin
dynamics and ball control while playing at a high speed, both
away and near the table.
OFF ELASTIC: Intelligent mixed between speed and spin
dynamic. Off elastic rubbers is for speed players that use a lot
of top spin in their game.
SPIN ELASTIC: Spin elastic rubbers are for the modern top table
tennis. They are as fast as the off elastic rubbers, but have an
additional spin component. Very sophisticated technology.
