March 2016 - Hoosier Hills Food Bank
Hungry for Change March 2016 News from the Hoosier Hills Food Bank 2333 W Industrial Park Dr / P.O. Box 697 / Bloomington, IN 47402 / 812-334-8374 / www.hhfoodbank.org 3.76 Million Pounds Made 2015 HHFB’s 2nd Biggest Year On the heels of the largest distribution month in our 33 year history (December), Hoosier Hills Food Bank ended 2015 having distributed 3,766,104 pounds of food. While this fell about 7.6% short of last year’s record distribution, it still marked the second highest year ever for HHFB. We announced our year end totals and issued our 2015 Annual Report at a luncheon on March 11, and the report details the highlights of last year in all aspects of our programs and operations. It is available online at our website, www.hhfoodbank.org, or a hard copy will be mailed on request to [email protected]. Unfortunately, distribution was down due to a significant drop in incoming food. We received over 526,000 pounds less food last year, with substantial drops in important food sources like federal commodities (-4%), local food donors (-15%), national network donors (-20%) and local garden fresh food sources (-28%). Purchased food was the only overall category showing an increase, of 3%. Despite those challenges, however, we distributed a significant amount of food, including over 847,000 pounds of fresh produce, 22% of our total. We also passed two important biennial audits – our Feeding America compliance audit and the AIB International third party food safety audit. And, we successfully hosted our first (and the community’s 32nd) annual book fair and saw a record number of volunteer hours recorded. Your support, along with that of thousands of food and financial donors, volunteers and community partners made it possible for us to overcome challenges and provide important services in 2015. Please take a moment to review our annual report and see what your help allowed us to achieve. We have some exciting plans and strategies to tell you about over the coming months and we’ll need your support again in 2016! In This Issue... This month, we’re happy to welcome two new additions to the HHFB staff! Member Agency Coordinator, Dex Conaway Dex comes to HHFB with a breadth of experience, having worked in the organic food industry since 1999. As an Inspector/Program Manager, Dex worked with a USDA-certified organic certification company, and he also has experience as a grower of organic foods. A passionate environmental and social justice activist, Dex has also devoted his time to ending hunger through social change. While away from the office, Dex enjoys camping and hiking. In Indiana, his favorite destination is Clifty Falls. Outside of Indiana, he also enjoys visiting Appalachia and the Rocky Mountain National Park. As Member Agency Coordinator, Dex is looking forward to connecting with HHFB’s agencies to help get food to those who need it! Food Rescue Driver, Tyler Steury Tyler is very excited to be a Food Banker and have the opportunity to help the community for a living. Most recently, Tyler was living in Phoenix, Arizona. He is happy to return home to Bloomington and is enjoying the Indiana winter! Tyler recently completed his Bachelor’s Degree at Arizona State University, in Conservation Biology and Ecology, and he is currently working on a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management. Tyler has been very happily married for six years, and he has a wild one-yearold daughter, named Lily. His favorite hobbies are sports, watching movies, hiking, camping, laying in hammocks, and sitting in hot-tubs. He also loves to travel, and he has visted all 50 states and 20 countries. Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry Receives $25,000 Grant Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) received a $25,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program at the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. FHFH gives hunters and farmers in Indiana the opportunity to donate deer and livestock to over 29 participating butcher shops for processing and distribution to food banks, shelters, soup kitchens and ministries that feed the hungry. “We are very grateful for this contribution which will assist our chapters in their efforts to enable hunters and farmers provide protein-rich meat to the hungry of Indiana. The Walmart Foundation is a wonderful partner in our mission to address the problem of hunger in Indiana and across America.” -FHFH Executive Director Josh Wilson 2 Hungry for Change IU Health Food Drive National Association of Letter Carriers Hoosier Hills Food Bank would like to thank Indiana University Health for again hosting its campuswide food drive to benefit HHFB. This food drive has raked in over 12,000 lbs of food before, and we hope it can be a great success again. Also, IU student athletes will be collecting food at Kroger Jackson Creek on March 12th! You are invited to come donate to HHFB and visit with the student athletes! We depend on big food drives like this to get us through the year. We are glad to see that even through staffing and business changes, IU Health sees the significance of this food drive and is continuing to push it forward. This May 14th, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will hold their annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Please place a bag of food next to or on your mailbox for us to pick up. HHFB depends on this, our largest food drive, to carry us through the summer months. We will also need volunteers to help collect the food. For more information, contact Ryan Jochim at volunteer@ hhfoodbank.org or call (812) 334-8374. Attorney General Greg Zoeller Kicks Off Annual March Against Hunger For the 8th consecutive year, the Indiana Attorney General’s Office is working with the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) and Feeding Indiana’s Hungry (FIsH) on a food drive competition. Throughout the month of March, attorneys, law firms, local bar chapters and law schools are encouraged to help Indiana’s regional food banks to place food on the tables of struggling Indiana residents. Attorney General Greg Zoeller kicked off the 2016 March Against Hunger at the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, challenging law firms throughout Indiana to participate in a state-wide competition. All competitors are asked to collect non-perishable food and monetary donations for Indiana’s 11 regional food banks. Since 2009, March Against Hunger has raised a total of over 60,000 pounds of food and nearly $300,000 for Indiana food banks. Hoosier Hills Food Bank was very proud to host Zoeller for the 2016 kick-off and greatly appreciates the help of Zoeller and participating lawyers throughout the state. This is a great opportunity for local law firms to do some fundraising and collect food for Hoosier Hills Food Bank. In the past 4 years, our winner has been Stephen Douglas, a sole proprietor from Ellettsville. We appreciate the continued support from Stephen, the Attorney General and the Indiana State Bar Association. Participants can walk or run, eat pastries and pie afterwards, and experience some classic pi-related puns. This great community event is free to participants! Any donations (food or financial) go to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. For more information, visit: www.pirunbloomington.com Hungry for Change Soup Bowl 2016 This year’s soup bowl was a great success! We are so grateful for the sponsors, restaurants, musicians, committee members, volunteers, attendees, and donors who helped make this year’s Soup Bowl a spectacular event. Restaurants provided us with over 40 soups to sample, and nearly 40 potters provided the bowls for the event. The numbers are in, and we are happy to have raised $98,215 to help us provide food to those in need! Each year, we are honored to host this great Bloomington tradition, which brings together so many generous community members. Thanks again for all your support – and we look forward to seeing you next year! Thank you to the Soup Bowl Benefit Planning Committee for making this event possible! Laurel Adams, Julio Alonso, Jennifer Bass, Jake Bruner, Karen Green Stone, Gail Hale, Suzanne Halvorsen, Michael Hamburger, Michelle Henderson, Judy Klein, Robert Meitus, Carrie Newcomer, Carol Seaman, Rob Stone, Dan Taylor, Marcia Veldman, Licia Weber 20/20 Food Drive Update Although 2015 was a challenging year for donations for HHFB there were a couple bright spots and one of those was the 20/20 food drive campaign. Through donor outreach and a great community response we were able to have over 40 new food drives raising over 30,000 lbs. of food during the 20/20 campaign. This is absolutely outstanding and I know some of you reading this now are among those to help pull this off. So, thank you so much! I know our agencies and the clients they serve are very appreciative of the amount and variety of food we have had on hand to start 2016. Participating businesses included Baxter, Summers Plumbing, MCCSC, St. Charles School, Printpack, and Bloom Marketing, just to name a few. We hope that although the campaign has ended, this will not mean the end to new and increased food drives. Don’t wait to host your own food drive at your local business!
