“THE FRIENDLIEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD” INDIANA STATE ASSOCIATION, INC. OF FAMILY CAMPERS AND RVers, Founded as National Campers & Hikers Association Mark and Sharon Shaneyfelt President February 2015 Volume 48 Number 1 Mike & Marilyn Rausch Editors On November 22, 2014, International FCRV Teen King Fletcher Shaneyfelt, “Tab Lady” and Riley Hospital Collection Coordinator Patti Thieme and driver Angie Shaneyfelt made a trip to the Ronald McDonald’s House. They delivered a total of 35 pounds of tabs for The Ronald McDonald house, along with games, puzzles, sidewalk chalk, small trucks, animals in tins, stuffed animals, purses, backpacks, homemade totes (49 of them made by Wilma Johnson), and other totes. There were also 4-wheelers, dolls, water bottles, coloring books, board books, flash cards, erasers, blankets and lotions. In the school supply areas we delivered pencils, pens, glue, note books, school scissors, crayons, pencil boxes, rulers and pens with notebooks. All of this was made possible by the generosity of the members of Indiana’s Family Campers and RVers. They were very appreciative for everything that was given. Thank you and keep up the good work!! The Hoosier Chatter February 2015 2 From the State Director From the State President Cindy James Mark and Sharon Shaneyfelt Hello Indiana…. January is nearly over and here comes February. This means we are getting closer to opening up our campers and stocking them with lots of goodies and camping gear. Now we just need to get thru February and March and HOPE they will be “Weather Friendly” months for us all! Please get out your calendars and compare them to the State, Regional and National events already scheduled this year. Hopefully we can have a “good” Indiana Showing at these campouts! So mark the dates and remember to send in the registrations as the hosting chapter/club use these to know how many to plan on that will be attending. Folks, this Spring we will again be holding an national election. Please follow the Camping Today magazine for each of the candidates biographies and platform statements. In closing, I wish to say this…if there are any members out in Indiana Land that have never camped or only attended one or two of the State, Regional, or National FCRV events…PLEASE PLEASE all I ask is that you try just ONE during this upcoming camping season, if nothing else but to say “Thanks” to Family Campers & RVers. If for not belonging to FCRV first, there’d be NO local chapters/clubs as we know them today. Think Spring Folks!! Hello from Florida! Hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year's. We had all the kids home the Saturday before Christmas and then headed for Florida the Monday after. It was 70 + degrees today. It is time to start thinking about camping in 2015. We still need a bid for the summer campout. The Fall Invitational is still up in the air regarding location and price. We hope to see you all at the Spring Campout at Jay County Fairgrounds the first weekend of May. The Teens should show us a good time. See you all there. Until next time, Mark and Sharon Shaneyfelt P.S. Just watched a night time rocket launch go up. AWESOME! Present were Alberta Broaddus, Harry Fry and his daughter, Doris, Sandy and Ron Dishman, and Mike and Marilyn Rausch. Particularly missed was Pauline Rose, who remains in a rehab facility following her hip fractures, and Jean Brown who was home caring for her son after his recent surgery. We enjoyed a variety of food and wonderful conversation. Although we are not able to camp as a group any more, we are thankful for the friendships that continue to blossom through our monthly gettogethers! The GM/Delphi Campers met at The Olive Garden Restaurant in Kokomo, Indiana, on December 13, 2014. There were 9 members present. Many of our members have gone south or west at this time, so the group was smaller than usual. This will be our last meeting until May, 2015, when we start the new camping season. We hope that all had a safe and happy holiday this year. Stay safe and stay warm. Until we can share a campfire Don and Judy Spence Marilyn Rausch Indiana State Association FCRV Youth Director Brenda Simmons Hello Youth, Hope you are enjoying your winter and staying warm. Youth director, Brenda Simmons Indiana State Association FCRV Conservation Chairman Brenda Simmons Remember to REDUCE, RECYCLE, and REUSE to save our environment. Remember to save your tabs, coupons, box tops, Campbell Soup labels, and plas c lids over these non -camping months. Also, please con nue to collect any toys, school supplies, etc., for Riley. Bring them all to our Spring Campout in Portland. Patti Thieme [Ed note: see page 1 of this issue for related article.] Indiana State Association FCRV Reree Director Patti Thieme This year at our Retiree Campout (before the Fall Invitational at Jennings County), we are looking at mixing up our schedule a little bit. We are considering having our pitch in on Tuesday, going to a chicken buffet on Wednesday, and not having the soup supper. On Thursday, the men would still fix brunch and we would still have the ice-cream meeting. If you have any other suggestions, please let Patti Thieme know. Patti is the Retiree Director. February 2015 5 Indiana State Association FCRV Teen Directors Ed and Angie Shaneyfelt We hope everyone has their calendars marked for the Spring Campout, May 1-2-3, 2015, at the Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland, Indiana. Since you've got your calendar marked, please look for the registration in this Chatter. The last few years, when I register for a campout, I have found it is easier to send the full amount ($50.00 weekend). It makes it easier when you arrive (for registration) and it frees up your money for the weekend of the campout (so you have extra to put in your gas tank!!!) The teens are still gathering information for this campout. It will be interesting to see what they come up with for their "Life's A Beach" campout. I bet you will just be on the edge of your seat to see what the teens come up with. Just check out next months CHATTER. (On that note, Teens please email me your thoughts/suggestions for the upcoming campout.) High School Seniors/College Students, watch for the Scholarship form in next month’s CHATTER. Also, any teen that is interest in running for the Teen Queen or Teen King position to represent Indiana in Oklahoma in 2016, watch for the application in next month's CHATTER. (By the sounds of this article, next month's CHATTER is going to be a wealth of information!) Thanks, Ed & Angie Shaneyfelt As time and circumstances happen, we sometimes loose touch of those with whom we’ve shared camping experiences and who are no longer able to celebrate the outdoors with us. If you know of anyone who could use a little sunshine in their lives, send the editor their name and address so that we have the opportunity to send a card or give a call to brighten their day! Some of you will remember these former and current members ~ Bill Silvis (8810 Colby Blvd., Apt 22A, Indianapolis, IN 46268 (317-402-2885) Wish Bill a happy 90th birthday on February 7, 2015!!) Like good teeth. Warm coats. Bald husbands & chubby wives. They're good for you, reliable and practical and so sublime that to throw them away would make the garbage man a thief. So you hang on to the older gifts, because something old is sometimes better than something new, and what you know is often better than a stranger. Here are my thoughts, they make me sound old, old and tame and dull at a time when everybody else is frisky and racy and flashing all that's new and improved in their lives. New spouses, new careers, new thighs, new lips. The world is dizzy with trade-ins. I could keep track, but I don't think I want to. I grew up in the fifties with practical parents - a mother, God bless her, who washed aluminum foil after she cooked in it, then reused it-and still does. A father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones. They weren't poor, my parents, they were just satisfied. Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, fifties couples in Bermuda shorts and Banlon sweaters, lawnmower in one hand, tools in the other. The tools were for fixing things - a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things you keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, reheating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant there'd always be more. But then my father died, and on that clear au- tumn night, in the chill of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any 'more.' Sometimes what you care about most gets all used up and goes away, never to return. So while you have it, it's best to love it and care for it and fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick. That's true for marriage and friends and old cars and children with bad report cards and dogs with bad hips and aging parents. You keep them because they're worth it, because you're worth it. Sometimes the best gifts are the old ones that you have already received. Receive the old gifts again, by looking around and appreciating your life, the people and the things in it...for they are the true gifts of life. [From The Cybersalt Digest, a ministry of Pastor Tim and Cybersalt Communications. Pastor Tim pastors at Westside Bible Church, Victoria, BC www.westsidefamily.org] Giving up or throwing out stuff or something for the New Year is not as important as holding on to the things of the past that add value to your life. Things like: hard work; love of Country; love of God; handshake honesty; purity in thoughts and deeds; faithfulness; opportunity equality for all; sacrifice for others and Country; respect for others, for the environment, for personal property, justice for self and others, and forgiveness for self and others. Feel free to add others as this is not meant to be an exhaustive list. So, be kind to yourself for Resolution Failure and enjoy the balance of the year. See you down the road! 7 The Hoosier Chatter February 2015 May 1-3, 2015 Jay County Fairgrounds Portland, Indiana Name_____________________________________________Chapter_________________ Address____________________________________________________________________ City______________________________________________State________Zip_________ Unit Type___________ Length_____ Slides________ Handicap______ #Adults_______ #Teens_______ #Youth______ First State Campout?______ Activity Fee (Due with registration): $10.00/family $50 Weekend Send registration to Angie Shaneyfelt 1466 W 750 N Decatur, IN 46733 Phone # 260-728-9848 [email protected] The Hoosier Chatter 8 February 2015 Advertising Policy International Events Retiree Rally 2015 North Florida Fairgrounds Tallahassee, Florida March 24-29, 2015 Retiree Rally 2016 Houma, Louisiana More information to follow Campvention 2015 Cam-Plex Multi-Events Center Gillette, Wyoming July 6-10, 2015 Campvention 2016 Oklahoma Expo Center Shawnee, Oklahoma July 18-22, 2016 Indiana State Events 2015 Spring Campout “Life is a Beach” Hosted by the Indiana Teens May 1-3, 2015 Jay County Fairgrounds Portland, Indiana Retiree Rally Jennings County Fairgrounds September 28-October 1, 2015 Fall Invitational Hosted by your Trustees Jennings County Fairgrounds October 2-4, 2015 Great Lakes Regional Event 2015 Regional Campout Diamond Lake, Kentucky July 30-August 2, 2015 Don’t forget to preregister for the campouts!
