ESV
The English Standard Version was
created for the sole purpose of glorifying
God–to be an “essentially literal” translation
that is consistently trustworthy to the inspired
words of the original. It is our prayer that, by
God’s grace and providence, the ESV Bible
may become established and used in our
own country and internationally as a leading
translation, for the spread of the Gospel, for
the salvation of souls, for the building up of
the church, and for God’s glory alone.
“We have embraced the ESV as the preaching,
teaching, reading, and memorizing Bible at
our church because, of all the translations I
am aware of, it embodies the best balance of
literal accuracy and contemporary English
readability. I am deeply thankful to God for
this translation of the Bible.”
JOHN PIPER
Pastor for Preaching, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneapolis

WORDS MATTER. When it comes to God’s
words, it’s a matter of eternal urgency that we get
every word right. You can trust the ESV Bible to
provide you with an accurate English translation
of God’s Word from the original languages.
“After twenty years of teaching God’s Word
and changing translations I have found at
last, by God’s grace, a translation that is easy
to read and immensely accurate. The ESV is
the new first choice for serious students and
careful communicators of God’s unchanging
Word.”
JA M E S M AC D O NA L D
Senior Pastor, Harvest Bible Chapel, Rolling Meadows, Illinois
READABILITY
CLARITY ENHANCES UNDERSTANDING.
The ability to understand more of God’s Word
means greater opportunity for you to learn more
about God himself. Without compromising
Scripture’s depth of meaning, the ESV Bible makes
this possible for people of all ages.
“I have adopted the ESV as the primary text
for my teaching and writing ministry. I
appreciate . . . the ESV because it retains
theological terminology that is at the heart
of the Christian faith and exercises care and
precision in the translation in a way that
preserves literary beauty.”
NA N C Y L E IG H D E M O S S
Author, Host of Revive Our Hearts radio
BEAUTY
THERE IS BEAUTY IN TRUTH. Not only does
the ESV Bible retain the original meaning of
biblical texts—it preserves literary beauty as well.
The splendor of God’s message in the Bible has
not been dimmed or veiled in this “essentially
literal” translation.
“I have found the English Standard Version to be wonderfully
faithful, solid, and reliable. I use it personally for study purposes
and can heartily endorse it.”
“I’m so grateful for a translation that I can trust for its accuracy
and enjoy for its clarity. This is a Bible that my entire family will
benefit from for years to come.”

“ The ESV represents a new level of excellence in Bible translations—combining unquestionable accuracy in translation with
a beautiful style of expression. It is faithful to the text, easy to
understand, and a pleasure to read. This is a translation you
can trust.”
D R . R . A L B E RT M O H L E R , J R

“ The translation is outstanding. The ESV achieves a new
standard in accurate Bible translations for our day.”
D R . R . C . SP R O U L
“My ESV is now thoroughly marked and well worn. The
translation safeguards essential accuracy while maintaining
a style that is both fluid and beautiful.”
ST EV E G R E E N

“ The ESV is what I’ve wanted for myself and my church for
twenty-five years—one Bible we can all read, study, memorize,
and give to our children.”
D R . J O SE P H F. ( SK I P ) RYA N
Pastor, Park Cities Presbyterian Church
Chairman, Ligonier Ministries
“I am so impressed with the clarity, beauty, and power of
the ESV that I feel that I am reading the Bible again for the
first time.”
“I am thrilled to finally possess a translation that excels for
serious study, devotional reading, Scripture memorization,
and the preaching/teaching event. The ESV truly is a Bible
for all of life.”

GOD’S WORD DESERVES ATTENTION. When
you apply yourself to the Bible, you will gain
wisdom for living from the One by whom all
things have been made. The world fiercely
competes for your eyes, your mind, and your
heart. What you apply yourself to today will
determine the kind of fruit produced in you
tomorrow. The English Standard Version is an
accurate translation upon which you, as a student
of God’s Word, can base your life and work.
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come
knowledge and understanding.”

GOD’S WORD IS FOR ALL PEOPLE. Some
of Christ’s last words while on this earth were
commands to preach the good news, to share the
message of salvation to all people. Putting the
Bible in people’s hands is the best way to share the
power of God for salvation. This is the greatest
gift you can share. Containing a message that is
powerfully relevant to every individual, the ESV
Bible is a translation that is appropriate for the
entire English-speaking world.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the
power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.”

T R A N S L AT I O N P H I L O S O P H Y
The ESV is an “essentially literal” translation that seeks as far as possible to
capture the precise wording of the original text and the personal style of
each Bible writer. As such, its emphasis is on “word-for-word” correspondence, at the same time taking into account differences of grammar, syntax,
and idiom between current literary English and the original languages.
Thus, it seeks to be transparent to the original text, letting the reader see as
directly as possible the structure and meaning of the original.
In contrast to the ESV, some Bible versions have followed a “thought-forthought” rather than “word-for-word” translation philosophy, emphasizing
“dynamic equivalence” rather than the “essentially literal” meaning of the
original. A “thought-for-thought” translation is of necessity more inclined
to reflect the interpretive opinions of the translator and the influences of
contemporary culture.
Every translation is at many points a trade-off between literal precision and
readability, between “formal equivalence” in expression and “functional
equivalence” in communication, and the ESV is no exception. Within this
framework we have sought to be “as literal as possible” while maintaining
clarity of expression and literary excellence.
Therefore, to the extent that plain English permits and the meaning in each
case allows, we have sought to use the same English word for important recurring words in the original; and, as far as grammar and syntax allow, we
have rendered Old Testament passages cited in the New in ways that show
their correspondence. Thus in each of these areas, as well as throughout
the Bible as a whole, we have sought to capture the echoes and overtones of
meaning that are so abundantly present in the original texts.
As an essentially literal translation, then, the ESV seeks to carry over every
possible nuance of meaning in the original words of Scripture into our own
language. As such, it is ideally suited for in-depth study of the Bible. Indeed, with its emphasis on literary excellence, the ESV is equally suited for
public reading and preaching, for private reading and reflection, for both
academic and devotional study, and for Scripture memorization.
