RESIDENCE HALL ROOM SELECTION FALL 15/SPRING 16 ROOM SELECTION ELIGIBILITY SIU Carbondale students have the option of selecting their own on‐campus residence hall rooms during their designated online room selection periods. This tutorial is specifically for new students. (Current residents have different schedules and deadlines. Detailed information is sent directly to these students.) New student online room selection is available to new students who complete their residence hall contract on or before March 1, 2015. (Students who contract after this date will receive more information later this summer.) Room selection opens at 8:00 a.m. on the assigned room selection for each student who contracted on or before March 1. Room selection dates are based on the date of contract and are viewable in the Housing Portal at housing.siu.edu/portal. SELECTING A ROOM To select a room, students log into the University Housing Portal at housing.siu.edu/portal. Once logged in, students click “Room Search” at the top of the screen and follow the steps described below. If a student’s first choice isn't available, s/he should select a different room or area. Once they select a room, students may change their room selection through the month of June. ROOM SELECTION: SCREEN 1 Beginning on their room selection date, students may search for available rooms by “Room Type”, “Location”, “Living Learning Community” and/or “Number of Available Beds”. ROOM SELECTION: SCREEN 2 Students will only be able to view rooms with vacancies for which they are eligible. (For example, female students with a declared Aviation major may see female‐designated rooms in the Aviation Living Learning Community (if any have vacancies), as well as rooms with no designation and rooms with general interest designations that do not require a specific major.) ROOM SELECTION: SCREEN 3 Out of the list of available rooms, they can click on a specific room to view “Room Details”, including “Room Type”, “Location”, “Floor”, “Eligibility Requirements”, etc. ROOM SELECTION: SCREEN 4 To select the room, students click on a bed and click "Reserve Bed". One of the two screens below will be visible, depending on if the student has accepted a roommate through the University Housing Roommate Finder program. More information about this program is available at the end of this tutorial under “Accommodating Roommate Preferences”. SHOWN WITHOUT ROOMMATE CONTENT Students who have not accepted a roommate will see the screen below. SHOWN WITH ROOMMATE CONTENT Students who have accepted a roommate will see the screen below. The student completing the room selection process assigns his or her roommate a bed, provided eligibility requirements are met and two vacancies are available. If the roommate is not eligible, an error message will appear. ROOM SELECTION: SCREEN 5 A confirmation page will be displayed once the room reservation is complete. (Remember: Room reservations can be changed online through the month of June. Be sure to read emails and other communications from University Housing for any updates or changes to this process.) ACCOMMODATING ROOMMATE PREFERENCES Most of our students do not know their roommate prior to coming to SIU. Students search for roommates by using Roommate Finder ‐ located in the SIU Carbondale Facebook App or in the University Housing Portal. Once they find a roommate, they send and accept a roommate request in the University Housing Portal Roommate Finder. Once a roommate has been accepted, s/he will be shown on your Roommate Finder page as shown below. Once they are linked together as confirmed roommates, the person with the earliest room selection date selects a room with a double vacancy and assigns a bed to his/her roommate. (Both students must meet room eligibility requirements.) Students not eligible to select a room will receive more information in June. Current students have been selecting rooms since last fall, leaving fewer rooms with double vacancies. If accepted roommates cannot find a room with a double vacancy, they can look for rooms on the same floor or in the same building. While we make every effort to accommodate requests, there are no guarantees.
