Many of you have asked for some basic information in order to request matching gifts from your employers, so we have put together the attached info sheet that you can provide along with your company’s request for matching funds. Nuestros Sueños / Our Dreams: Our third curriculum theme launched this week, through which all HoLa students will be exploring dreams in every sense of the word — from aspirations to imagination to surrealism as an approach to art. Today, they started their new Friday special with our guest artist in residence, Alan Nuñez, who introduced students to the world of Dalí and will work with them to use their own dreams as a starting point to create works of art. Attached is a “homework” sheet to get them thinking over the holidays in preparation for the next class in January. Revolution Foods: Roz from Revolution visited all of our classrooms last Friday with a mini workshop on nutrition and the importance of eating a variety of fruits and vegetables daily (a “rainbow”). The kids had fun identifying and sampling different vegetables, and learning what body parts they are good for. Going forward, she will continue to visit our lunchroom to challenge students to try new foods through games and tastings. Enrichment / Aftercare: Don’t forget, there is no enrichment next week, and no aftercare on Thursday 12/23, which will be a 1pm dismissal day. Enrichment class th assignments will be announced Monday, and the next session will begin on Jan. 10 . Mile Square Theatre: Our students had a wonderful experience with Maria-Itzel, Kyla and Chris during their Palabras Luminosas Friday specials! In addition to the enrichment class MST will be offering at HoLa in Jan., they also offer classes for all ages at their own studio: http://www.milesquaretheatre.org/education.htm Fechas: th • Mon. We have started an arts residency with your kids based on Salvador Dali and Surrealism. We’ll be working with them to create art work based on this genre and their dreams. To make this work, we hope you can help your child with this project over the holiday break. There are four questions below. If you could have a discussion with your child, help them answer and write down the questions for our next meeting, that would be great. Also, based on your answers, please cutout six (6) to ten (10) images from magazines or a photos. Nothing too large (maybe 6” by 6” at most) each. Please place them in an envelope with your child’s name on it and bring it, with the written answers, back to your teacher. Since Salvador Dali and his fellow Surrealists worked a lot with their dreams, we’re going to base our work on our own dreams (nuestros sueños…). Here are some questions: 1. What are some things that you dream about most? ( for example: dogs, planes, my sister, my toys, etc. 2. How do these dreams make you feel? (for example, “when I dream about my dog, I feel very happy”, or “when I dream about my toys, I think of my friends” 3. Do have some dreams that seem a little out of place? (for example, “I dream about my sister, but she’s on the moon”) 4. Where do your dreams take place? (for example, “I sometimes dream about my grandparents’ house by the ocean”) Dreams don’t have to take place when we’re sleeping. If you have trouble remembering your dreams or don’t want to share them, use your daydreams. Daydreams are when your mind slips off somewhere and you think about something other than where you are right now. Daydreams can include going to the toy store, or riding a horse or what you’re going to have for your birthday dinner. Parents: The work done in this residency will be highlighted in a blog called “Surrealism at HoLa” (http://surrealismathola.blogspot.com/). We’ll have photos and maybe video of your child’s first day in this Surrealist art residency before the holiday break. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact HoLa to ask them or me a question. Salvador Dali said, “when I paint, the sea roars”. We’re excited to make the seas roar as loud as they can with the art we’re going to make. Happy Holidays! Alan (teaching artist) and Salvador (Surrealist) Date_____________________________ To Whom It May Concern Re: Matching Gift Program: I __________________________ am making a donation to HoLa Hoboken Dual Language Charter School and will be applying for a matching gift through the matching gift program. I am providing some information about the charity that I am supporting to assist with any questions that you may have: What is HoLa? Hoboken Dual Language Charter School (HoLa) is a dual language charter school that offers a traditional core curriculum through instruction in both Spanish and English to children of all language backgrounds. The program utilizes the well-established Two-Way Immersion approach to dual language education with an emphasis on the arts and experiential learning. HoLa students become bilingual and biliterate in an academically rigorous, culturally diverse and nurturing environment. After a rigorous application process, NJ Education Commissioner Lucille Davy approved the Hoboken Dual Language Charter School (HoLa) on September 22, 2009. HoLa opened its doors to students in grades K-2 in September 2010; a grade will be added each year until the school reaches K-5. What is a Charter School? Created by state law, charter schools are an example of a public/private partnership designed to enhance educational opportunities for public school students. State charter school laws and policies vary widely. Charter schools do not charge tuition and are, for the most part, open enrollment, nondiscriminatory, nonsectarian educational institutions. They are funded primarily by per-pupil allocations from the chartering agency (in HoLa’s case the Hoboken district). HoLa currently receives only a portion of the funding provided to local district schools, and, unlike local district schools, HoLa must pay for facilities out of their operating budget. Charter schools are considered public schools. What is different is that charter schools generally are not operated directly by the public school district but under a separate charter, a contract with a state or local agency that provides them with public funds. The charter sets forth essential conditions for which the school will be held accountable but leaves the implementation of these terms to the charter school's board of directors. This frees the charter school from a number of regulations that otherwise apply to public schools and leaves room for innovation and experimentation. There are several different operational models for charter schools. In some states, these schools are under the direct control of the school district. The school district contracts directly for management and educational services. Some states require a separate entity to run the school. For-profit as well as non-profit entities may be eligible to apply for a charter. State law may or may not require that the chartering organization be tax exempt under IRC 501(c)(3). HoLa operates as a separate tax exempt entity. What is HoLa’s tax status? HoLa is a tax exempt public charity under Section 501(c)3, and as such, all contributions to HoLa qualify as a charitable deduction for federal income tax purposes to the fullest extent allowed by IRS and donor circumstances. What is HoLa’s Tax identification number? HoLa’s tax identification number is 27-1261831. Who is the HoLa contact for additional information? Anthony Oland, Chair of Annual Appeal, [email protected] or 201.562.7047. Who is the contact to confirm the gift received by HoLa? The contact to confirm gifts received is Hector Berrios, School Business Administrator [email protected] or 201-427-1458. 123 Jefferson Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030 • Tel 201.427.1458 Fax 201.963.3926 • [email protected] www.holahoboken.org Nutrition at HoLa Did you know that half our plates should be made up of fresh fruits and vegetables? Children need a balanced diet of protein foods (meats, nuts, seeds & beans), whole grains, and lots of fruits and vegetables. If we think about half our plate being full of fruits and vegetables, we should be getting the right amount each day. With Revolution Foods, the kids receive a fresh fruit and vegetable with every lunch. Other ways to increase fruits and vegetables in our children’s’ diet is to serve them for snacks. Fruit Snacks Vegetable Snacks Slice apple or pear (alone or with peanut butter) Sliced pears or bananas Sliced oranges or clementines Pomegranates (slice the top and break open with your hands) Yogurt with berries or fruit smoothie Sliced peppers or carrots with hummus Fresh salsa or guacamole with pita Sugar snap peas or cherry tomatoes Sweet potato and kale chips (just roast in the oven with a little olive oil) Celery with peanut butter (and raisins) Think all the colors of the rainbow! Ask your child what they tried in Roz’s rainbow lesson? I bet they would eat it again. Once kids learn that a healthy snack is a fruit or a vegetable, or some yummy nuts, they won’t expect salty, crunchy, and sweet items for snacks. They will know that those are treats – for special occasions. There is great power in a HEALTHY HABIT. When it starts young – it’s for LIFE. FAMILY CORNER holiday eating Winter months are full of special dinners and parties. It is a time with much to celebrate, when we all look forward to enjoying our favorite meals and desserts. But it is easy to rack up the calories during the holidays without even realizing it. Holiday eating over a week with rich dishes and sweet desserts can throw off your balanced diet and lead to unintentional weight gain. Check out what a typical holiday weekend could offer in calories: Friday saturday sunday monday Office holiday party with assorted baked goods Family holiday party with buffet dinner Neighborhood caroling with hot chocolate and cookies Fruitcake arrives in the mail 1,900 calories 1,000 calories 800 calories 600 calories Be mindful of what you eat this season. By following a few tips on holiday eating, you and your family can enjoy special foods while keeping a balanced and healthy diet. Read on to find out how to eat your favorite foods, without over-indulging! Healthy Holiday Recipe Tips: Shake the salt out. You can reduce salt by half in most recipes and replace with fresh or dried herbs. Go easy on salty condiments, such as pickles, catsup, mustard and soy sauce. Instead offer cucumber slices and fresh tomato or fruit salsas, or try lower-sodium versions of mustard and soy sauce. The cheese platter — yikes all that salt and fat. Better to skip it. Instead, opt for fresh fruits and veggies. Instead of serving cured ham, try a fresh pork loin roast with herbs. Cut sugar, add flavor. When making pumpkin pie or eggnog, reduce the amount of sugar by half and enhance “sweetness” by adding a bit more vanilla, nutmeg or cinnamon. If recipes call for sugary toppings like frosting, jams and syrup, use fresh fruit instead. Trim the fat. In baked goods you can cut the fat by about half and replace it with unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana. Instead of full-fat condensed milk, use skim condensed milk in pumpkin pie and eggnog. For gravy, heat fat-free, low-sodium broth (or drippings with the fat removed); mix flour into cold skim milk and pour slowly into broth, stir until thickened and season to your liking. At the table, hold the butter and whipped cream or use half as much as you typically would. ONE WAIVER PER CHILD REQUIRED!
