January Newsletter - Highland Chamber of Commerce
Highland Chamber of Commerce CHAMBER NEWS January 2006 907 Main Street ~ Highland, Illinois (618) 654-3721 www.highlandillinois.com A Note from your President... I hope everyone took the time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday season. The Chamber of Commerce played a prominent role in making the holidays bright for Highland beginning with a spectacular lighted Christmas parade and our own Winter Wonderland in the park. We also had a tremendous turn-out at the annual Chamber Christmas luncheon which was held at Popeye’s Chophouse. Everyone enjoyed a splendid lunch while being serenaded by the High School Madrigal Singers. Chamber gift certificates continue to be tops on many people’s Christmas list with over $20,000 being sold during the month of December. And don’t forget, Chamber gift certificates are available all year long and can be purchased at the Chamber office or at any of the local banks. The annual Valentine Dinner, Dance & Auction is scheduled for February 11th. This important fundraiser allows the Chamber to continue to do all that it does for our members and community throughout the year as well as help maintain the Chamber building. Speaking of which, I invite you to stop by and see the renovations that are being made to the Chamber building. We were able to make some much needed upgrades without detracting from the charm of the historic First National Bank building that the Chamber calls home. On behalf of YOUR Chamber, I want to wish each of you a very happy and prosperous New Year! Jay Valentine Dinner, Dance & Auction Make plans now to attend the Chamber’s annual Valentine Dinner, Dance & Auction on Saturday, February 11th at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Cocktails and the Silent Auction will begin at 5 p.m. followed by Dinner at 6 p.m. The thrill of the Live Auction begins at 7 p.m. with entertainment by the Z-Band beginning at 8:30 p.m. The Z-Band, a St. Louis favorite since 1970, has performed for the St. Louis Cardinals, Anheuser Busch, Coca-Cola Corporation and Six Flags just to name a few. An exciting addition to this year’s gala will be the “champagne-diamond” mystery courtesy of Becker Jewelers, so be sure to mark your calendars now for this much anticipated event! Invitations will be coming soon. Throughout the course of the year we executed a number of very successful events: Valentine Dinner, Dance & Auction, Spring Quarterly Meeting, PBJ Season, Annual Dinner, Street Art Fest, Fall Quarterly Meeting, Annual Lighted Christmas Parade and Christmas Luncheon! I am happy to say that each of these events was well attended and a testament of the fabulous things that the Chamber of Commerce does for the Highland community. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Stacey (our assistant) and the Board Ribbon Cutting The Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of a new downtown business, Groomingdales of Highland. The professional dog grooming facility is located at 818 Broadway. for their endless help in pulling off such a successful year! I also have to thank our membership and community for continuing to support the efforts of the Chamber – without you we are nothing. To all of our 50 + NEW members – I hope you are seeing the vast array of benefits that your Chamber family provides…..we are happy to have you and are here to serve you every day! Pay employees fairly and well, then get them to forget about money. Treat each and every employee with respect. Show them that you care about them as persons, not just as workers. Praise accomplishments and attempts—large and small, at least four times more than you “criticize.” Clearly communicate goals, responsibilities and expectations. Never criticize...redirect instead. Recognize performance appropriately and consistently—reward the great ones, coach or fire the poor ones. Involve employees in plans and decisions, especially those that affect them. Solicit their ideas and opinions. Encourage initiative. Create opportunities for employees to learn and grow. Link the goals of the organization with the goals of each individual in it. Actively listen to employee concerns—both work related and personal. Share information—promptly, openly and clearly. Tell the truth...with compassion. Celebrate successes and milestones reached, both organizational and personal. Create an organizational culture that is open, trusting and fun.
