The first grade 8 graduation was a milestone event in the history of Sathya Sai School and we wish our graduates all the best in their future endeavours. The SSS family lost several key individuals this year since March 2015. The individuals include Mrs. Santosh Taneja, Mrs. Christina (Ananda) Lukomskyj, Mr. Krishnan, Mrs. Geeta Samaroo, Mrs. Shanta Devata and Mr. Jeyaganesha Gangkatharan. We acknowledge all these individuals for their unconditional love and support to Sathya Sai School, its Building Project, staff, parents and students. Sathya Sai School parent, Mr. Jeyaganesha's sudden demise on Saturday, June 27, 2015, shocked the entire Sathya Sai School family. Mr. Jeyaganesha occupied a pivotal role in the Sathya Sai Building Project as he liaised with the School Trustees, contractor, technical teams and disseminated clear information to Sathya Sai School staff as well as parents, as and when needed. In addition he also prepared our students for the annual Bridge Building Project through workshops, besides also being a facilitator for the Dynamic Value Parenting. I thank all Sathya Sai School parents, especially grade 4 & 6 parents for showing your support to Mrs. Jeyaganesha, Kohul and Geertika during this period of grief and for assuring them that this too shall pass. . . Let us continue to pray to the Almighty to give solace and courage to the family to endure this terrible loss, send love and light to the family to alleviate their sorrow. Wishing all students, parents, staff members, volunteers and community supporters a safe and a happy summer vacation. Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday, September 8, 2015. This will mark the 16th anniversary of the Sathya Sai School of Canada, since its inception in the year 2000. I made new friends, learned colouring and Congratulations to everyone for a very successful and enjoyable Graduation, to be cherished as a milestone in the lives of the children and their families! Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 7 7 Grade 8 Milestone Graduation at Sathya Sai School Friday, June 19th, 2015 brought double blessings, as it was also the day that the first batch of Grade 8 students graduated from Sathya Sai School. The simple and elegant decoration of the banquet hall in blue, white, and silver welcomed the guests and set the tone for an evening of celebrating the accomplishments of this special class. PROGRAM: The evening began with the ceremonial Graduation March with students in caps and gowns, followed by the National Anthem sung by the graduands. The School Prayer was then led by Principal Dr. Revathi. Declaration by the Chancellor Sri Sathya Sai Baba via video: “I declare the Convocation open.” Message by the Chancellor Embodiments of love, boys and girls, students: You can call yourself a student if only you know the significance of education. Education does not mean mere acquisition of knowledge from books. This is called bookish knowledge. In this bookish knowledge, many experts are there. There are many intellectuals too. And we have got very high scholars. Being a scholar, being an intellectual of eminence, what is it that he is doing to the community? Having been born in society, having grown in society, having acquired education from the society, what is it that he is doing in turn to the society? If one does not express gratitude to the community and society, what for is his education? At one time Aravind said in Calcutta University: Oh students, why do you acquire knowledge? This learning should not be for selfishness. Nor for self interest either. In fact you acquired knowledge in this community. In fact if you don’t serve the community and society where from you acquired the knowledge, what for is this? If you do not work for the progress and advancement of the community, better you burn all the books. Today the knowledge of science is increasing. In fact various scientific techniques are taught to students. Is this scientific knowledge imparted for the advancement of the community, society, or to earn a reputation? In fact, there are intellectuals as well. What transformation do you find in them? The same thing was said at one time by Churchill. “Man has conquered all but he has not conquered himself.” The scientific knowledge today will make you know everything in the outer world except your own self. Man is making every effort to know everything present in the outside world. This is all the physical knowledge, the secular knowledge. Having known everything, he is not able to know his own self. The knowledge of the Self declined. Vidya is called education. What is meant by education? Education is the derivative of Educare. What is meant by Educare? The word Educare meant to bring out, to bring forth. What is it that should be brought out? Every power or faculty is latent in man. All powers – the physical, the moral, the intellectual, the spiritual, the ethical – all the values are in you. We should acquire that sacred education and serve the society. There are two paths to bring out the latent values. Educare is the Latin word. The Latin word indicates that those which are latent, imminent must be brought out. One, bringing out the external feelings. It concerns the head (the head is the one that brings it out). The inner faculties are brought out of the heart. When once these two manifest, inner and outer, the life will be ideal. One is the life, another is living. All the knowledge that comes out of the head will help you to carry out your living – the writing, the reading, all. All the secular knowledge has arisen out of the head. This is called bookish knowledge. There is a relationship here – masthaka, the head; pusthaka, the book. Things have come out of the head and gone into the book and the reverse order. This bookish knowledge is superficial knowledge. We need general knowledge. Later, discrimination knowledge is essential. What is right, what is wrong? What is the true ideal in my life? One must investigate clearly. After discrimination knowledge comes the practical knowledge in the field. Practical knowledge is important. The bookish knowledge is superficial knowledge. The general knowledge and the discrimination knowledge are absolutely worldly. They all stand for the external outlook. Therefore man is drowned in selfishness, self-interest and he has forgotten the progress of the society… Just as you want to grow in the field of the intellect, see that your heart also melts and expands… So do good, be good and see good. This is the way to God. – Sri Sathya Sai Baba, 18th Convocation Discourse, November 22, 1999 Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 8 8 those who believe in themselves. Dream big, change the world and make it better. Learning is not just academic. Dr. Revati advised the students to always be curious, to be open to the ideas of others, and to learn something new every day. Develop good relationships, stay connected with people through the years and do something good for the community. Message from the Principal Principal Dr. Revathi encouraged the graduands to pursue their dreams and ambitions in life as well as be the beacons of our school Chancellor Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s message of five human values. She paid tribute to all the students for having left a legacy of excellence, achievement and a fine ethos and tradition for generations to come. She also paid tribute to the wonderful teachers, the parents, volunteers, alumni students and board of trustees who were hugely instrumental in moulding our youth, our hope for the future. As they go through life, she urged them to “hold true to yourself. Remember to hold onto your value system, your work ethic and most importantly, your humanity.” One’s achievements may be forgotten, but “you will always be remembered for caring enough, for helping someone, for making someone feel special and appreciated.” In Dr. Revathi’s three decades as an educator and administrator, she has learned that everyone is good at something, that “Every single person has something worthwhile to contribute and it is very important that you never let others 'put you down'.” Success comes to Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 Most importantly, her closing words were, “Don’t forget to pray to and seek God. Make Him the centre of your life. I want each and every one of you to become the beacons of light and carry our Chancellor’s message of five human values wherever you go. Students, always march with self-confidence and pride that you will make a difference to the world through practicing the five human values you have learnt during your tenure at Sathya Sai School of Canada.” Address by Chief Guest – Mr. Pillay A warm welcome was given to Mr. T.R. Pillay, the Founding Principal of Sathya Sai School and now Director, the Canadian Institute of Sathya Sai Education (CISSE). He opened by saying, “My heart is brimming with joy.” He gave appreciation to the Principal and Mrs. Krishnanand for having invited him to the first Grade 8 Graduation. Mr. Pillay then dedicated his message to the parents and to two volunteers: Mrs. Santosh Taneja and Mrs. Geeta Samaroo. Both played an important part in his stay in Toronto. He spent many nights enjoying their warm hospitality. Santosh Taneja and Mr. Taneja gave the first Dynamic Value Parenting classes at the school. Then she taught yoga and had many other roles. 9 9 thinking by teachers drawing out facts from the students through careful and patient questioning. Two important books for him were mentioned. One was How to Win Friends and People by Dale Carnegie. The second book was the turning point in his life in Grade 10: Autobiography of a Yogi. This book “made me realize my true identity – this inner fountain of wisdom that is eternal. I realized I am not this body but a spirit. When I met our Founder he taught the same; to look within to find the inner source.” Geeta Samaroo was a very warm hostess. She and her husband opened their hoe and their hearts to him. Mr. Raj Samaroo was responsible for organizing all the furniture at the school, and Mr. Pillay added, “He died in my lap many years ago.” There were many volunteers – Mr. Amin and Mr. Param are still here. Many people have helped the school. The trustees, Mr. Dayal Mirchandani who has spent so many years of service to the school. Mrs. Mani Pathmarajah, who was there almost every single day providing her support. Mr. and Mrs. Premachandran – Mrs. Prem helped start the school and still volunteers at the school, and Ms. Recht and Ms. Poddar. When the school had its first flag raising, we were engaging in a new experiment – to balance academics and character. None of us knew how well this dream would be fulfilled. Mr. Pillay thanked everyone present, and the 12 of the 15 graduands who have been at the school since Junior Kindergarten, saying “I love you for your loyalty and cherish the support you and your parents have given to the school.” Mr. Pillay went on to reflect on experiences from his past that shaped him. He spoke of his early school years and the moral stories told by teachers that awakened their moral conscience; their encouragement to do public speaking and debating; their learning critical Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 Returning to the present, Mr. Pillay was gratified to see this teaching being implemented at Sathya Sai School: “It is a great joy for me to visit the school and see how well your teachers use various methods to connect you to the inner source and hear how insightful your answers are.” At the Kindergarten Graduation that had taken place in the morning, Mr. Pillay had been an honoured guest in the audience and had listened to all the students’ speeches. He was happy to hear one student talking about the Founder and the importance of service, how well we love our fellow man and how much we care. Mr. Pillay then went on to ask the students, “What have you learned at this school?” Answering his own question, he stated that the name “Sathya Sai School” stands for: Self-awareness Self-confidence Selfless service Self-awareness. “I have seen examples in your journals and writings. You are beginning to know your strengths and weaknesses. How your strengths can be used for the benefit of your family and society. I know you are self-aware and are on the path to self-improvement. Your teacher’s library is full of self-improvement books. Self-confidence. “I have seen you increasingly selfconfident. When VisionTV came to the school, the JKs were rehearsing their speeches. The title of Anurjan’s speech was “Why I love my Sathya Sai School.” He spoke from the heart and VisionTV used his speech as the voice-over of the program. When aired, they took a line 10 10 from his speech for the title of the program, “The Sathya Sai School of Canada: A Lesson in Love.” Mr. Pillay continued, “I hope you felt the love of your teachers as much as we loved you. You exhibited self-confidence in your letters – I read them in the Parent Newsletter. Selfless service. “You will serve your family and society. Another SK student spoke about service today. And the Walk for Values that you came up with is now spread across the world, making people aware of the importance of the Human Values. “My message to you – practise whatever you have learned. Dream big. Dust if you think, dust you are. God if you think, God you are. “The Founder wants us to dare to dream. You are bigger than this body; you are God. All of us can get there, if you practise the Human Values. “The Founder wants simplicity, but he wants you to fill the world with the fragrance of your good character. May you be good to your parents and work hard.” To illustrate his message, Mr. Pillay closed with a small story about a young man who came to apply for a job. He wasn’t accepted; he didn’t have the skills and he walked away very sadly. And then he returned and he said, “Sir, you gave me bus fare to make my trip here, but the bus fare was only so much. Here’s the change.” He walked away. He was called back, not because he had all the qualifications, the bookish knowledge. He was called back because he showed signs of a good character. “It has been a beautiful journey for many of the parents for 10 years.” She mentioned that out of the 15 graduands, 8 are going into International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes, 2 are going to the SATEC school, 1 to the TOPS program, 1 to an alternative school, and 2 to excellent neighbourhood schools. What a great achievement! Each student is excelling in some area. Overview of Awards Mrs. Tanushree Krishnanand, the dedicated and loving Grade 8 teacher who organised and orchestrated the graduation, thanked all the parents for all that they do for their children and the school. She then announced the first award. Parent of the Year Award Mrs. Neha Choksi, the recipient of the award, was very honoured. She said that all the parents were equally deserving and that without their help, this graduation function would not be possible, commenting that, Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 She said that children learn from parents, but parents also learn from children and said that she learned yoga and meditation from her children who are learning values from a young age. “Wherever these children go, they will stand out for their character.” Mrs. Choksi thanked the parents, who stand by each other, for their love and support. She then thanked: Mr. Pillay for selecting these children from a very young age; Dr. Revathi for always being open to suggestions and her warm heart; and Mrs. Krishnanand for teaching these children. She closed by asking the students to “care enough to give the world the best you have. Service springs out of love and scatters love all around.” 11 11 Awards Ceremony Students were called to the stage one at a time and their accomplishments honoured, as Mrs. Krishnanand named the awards each had earned, and Dr. Revathi presented their plaques and Graduation Certificates. To conclude the Awards Ceremony, the Graduated Grade 8 students sang the human values song, “Our World on the Move” and then concluded with the traditional throwing of the graduation caps up in the air. A special presentation to parents was given by the graduates, which had been organized by alumna Kirthana Sasitharan and youth leader Vinoj Suthakaran. Speaking in waves of several students at a time, holding candles, each graduate spoke poetic words of appreciation to their mother or father for the inspiration and strength each has given. Beginning with, “You are the flame of our burning candle” the students revealed their heartfelt love for the gifts they have received from their parents. The remainder of the evening was filled with a delicious dinner and energetic dance entertainment by the talented students. Mrs. Krishnanand gave a grateful Vote of Thanks to all the grade 8 parents and many of the staff members who had worked countless hours working on the decoration, food, pictures and sound for the event. Ending with an open dance floor, it was a grand celebration marking the school’s first Grade 8 graduation. Ria Choksi gave an animated, loving and humorous Valedictorian speech on behalf of her peers. They were all thankful for the amount of love and compassion they received from everyone at the school and have taken away something from each of the teachers. They all learned about friendship and family bonds and the most memorable part was having fun with their friends. On behalf of the class, she thanked Dr. Revathi, Mr. Pillay, and Ms. Recht for all they have done for the students, giving respect and love, choosing them to attend the school, and managing things big and small. Mrs. Krishnanand was appreciated for giving her class such a memorable and entertaining year. Gratitude was also given to the (Late) Mrs. Taneja for the kindness and love she shared with everyone. He was not only a loving husband, father of two of our students, Kohul and Geertika, but also a key member of the school building project team. We include here several eulogies delivered at the funeral of Mr. Jeyaganesha, testaments to his compassion, commitment, and humility. by Mr. Prem Premachandran, Trustee Salutations. Tribute I am Prem Premachandran. I am humbled and honoured to be asked by the Trustees of the Sri Sathya Sai Education Trust of Canada to pay tribute to Jeyaganesha on their behalf. Known I have known him for many years but came into close contact with him only after the commencement of the new school project. To me he is more than a person with a smiling face and gentle manners. He is soft spoken and so humble and never displayed any evil qualities such as anger, ego, etc. which many of us have. Jeyaganesha was ever ready to help anyone; in fact he helped many. He displayed characters that our beloved Sai Baba wanted everyone to possess. School project Jeyaganesha was one of the important pillars of the School Building Project and a very active participant. Although he is a professional engineer he displayed many skills that are needed for this project. His commitment to this project is immeasurable because this project was always in his mind – 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. This is not just my view but many people will vouch for this. However, he never neglected his work with the City. One Saturday afternoon around 6 PM by mistake I called his office number instead if his cell number. To my surprise he was at work and told me that he was very busy at work and was there to complete some urgent work. This shows his dedication. We are not building a new school, but rather converting an old warehouse/factory into a school with all facilities. Hence, there are many unforeseen challenges. I would Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 say without any hesitation that Jeyaganesha was always there with possible resolutions. He was a problem solver. His telephone worked even in early mornings, had meetings late at night at places convenient to others. I have never seen him pointing fingers at others any time; rather he only addressed issues. What a great quality. I used to ask him “How is the project going”? His answer with an ever smiling face was either “Fine” or “Uncle there are some issues. “Shall we go and meet this person to find out exactly what his issues are to find a resolution?” I am going to miss these meetings with Jeyaganesha. He was so flexible that he was ever ready to meet any people at any time to resolve issues mainly because he wanted the school project completed. He firmly believed that this would be a win-win situation for all: children, teachers, parents, volunteers and well-wishers. In my view, Jeyaganesha’s loss is irreplaceable; the loss is not only to the family and community in general but also to the school. Finally, it was an opportunity given to us by Sathya Sai Baba to come to know and associate with a person like Jeyaganesha. On behalf of the school trustees, I convey our heartfelt condolences to Jeyaganesha’s family. by Dr. Pon Sivaji It is with great sadness I stand in front of you today to say a few words about my good friend Ganesh. I am a great admirer of Ganesh for his Honesty, Genuineness, Simplicity and above all his commitments to whatever he undertook. Ganesh and his family were to go on a long awaited vacation last Saturday. The Thursday before we were on the phone having a long discussion on various matters. On Saturday at 5 AM I received a phone call from Bala saying Ganesh was admitted to the intensive care unit at Markham Stouffville Hospital. When I arrived in the ICU I could not believe seeing what had happened to Ganesh within a short spell of time. I was so devastated. 17 17 Ganesh’s life was taken away from us too soon. It is hard to understand why tragic things like this happen to such great and noble human beings. Though I am older than Ganesh I always observed, learnt and admired his life and his commitment to how one should conduct himself or herself in life. In real life we dream of lots of things but we do not realize that this could happen to any one of us in the next moment. Though at times we had healthy disagreement in various matters, we always worked towards the same goal. However, why this happened is a question to which none of us know the answer. But we should not dwell on this question of why such a thing happened. I have no doubt whatsoever that Ganesh will be remembered for how he lived his life. We lost a great son, a loving husband and a father, a brother, an uncle, a great teacher and above all a sincere friend. Ganesh was a person with a positive mind and would not want us to be sad, though it is very hard for us. Today let’s celebrate the life of Ganesh. If he was physically here he would tell us to cheer up, smile and remember all of the great memories we all shared with him in our life. We will remember all of the remarkable things Ganesh accomplished and how wonderful his life was. Even though Ganesh is not with us in his physical form, he is in all our memories for ever. I have known Ganesh for the last few years. In fact when we met each other we exchanged our telephone numbers. Ganesh, it is incredibly sad that your life ended in this world too soon. I cannot put into words how much we miss you. But I am so sure that you are watching us with a broad smile as usual. Last Saturday when I returned home from Markham Stouffville hospital Nimmi said: On our first meeting Ganesh was discussing a project he was thinking of undertaking in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Subsequently, we were involved in a project here in Toronto into which Ganesh put his heart and soul. In fact this gave us more opportunities to interact with each other during the last couple of years. Even though Ganesh was a very quiet person he had an exemplary character and was fully committed to whatever he undertook in his life. He has always been an honest, truthful and sincere person. He did not hesitate to point out when things were not right, immaterial of who it was. So many times I have been frustrated as things did not move as they should have in the project. I told Ganesh many times, why should he break his head when nobody wants to listen to him when he gave recommendations as a professional in the project. Ganesh always replied, “Doctor, if we do not do this, who will do it?” That was his commitment in anything he undertook in his life. Not only had that, this illustrated his nobility, humbleness without any ego, professionalism and his commitment. We are all born in this world and there is a day for all of us! None of us know how long we are here for. But definitely we know how we should live our lives. Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 For whatever the mission Ganesh has taken this physical form, he has accomplished it so soon and he has returned to the divinity. Maybe this is the ultimate truth of our life. One great person said: There is always an intent to what happens around us. We should look for it There is always an answer for it. Dad, Jeya, Kohul and Geertika There is no doubt that you all will miss Ganesh for ever so as all of us. It is very hard but I am sure the almighty Lord will give you all the strength as you go along. Ganesh, we pray to the Almighty to bless your soul with eternal bliss. We pray that he gives all the strength to each and every one in the family to carry on with their life the way you would like them to be. Finally I conclude with this saying which I think is applicable to each and every one of us, as life is so unpredictable. “DREAM AS IF YOU LIVE FOR EVER LIVE AS IF YOU WILL DIE TOMORROW” 18 18 by Mr. Manish Rughani, P.C. Co-Chair On behalf of Sathya Sai School of Canada’s trustees, staff, parents, students, volunteers, parent council members, my fellow Parent Council Co-Chair Sukumar, walk for values co-chair Kesh, the entire walk for values committee, School Building Project team, grade 4 and grade 6 parents and students, It is an honor and privilege to pay tribute today to a very special person – my friend and brother Ganesha – who was remarkable in so many ways. He lived his life to the full and touched so many people during his time here with us. We all have a kaleidoscope of memories that we will always carry with us - memories that defined Ganesha, memories that we will always hold dear. Grade 4 parents had organized a picnic on Saturday, knowing it was going to be a fun day, but indeed we all were shaken when Dr. Revathi called and mentioned that our friend is no longer with us. I just could not believe it. My daughter Vilina and her friend Lishita were at Ganesha’s place a day before celebrating Geertika’s birthday. Allow me to share some of the special memories that I have of Ganesha, memories that personify him and his life well-lived. I remember Ganesha was one rare individual who would always smile, park his car and thank me for volunteering at the parking lot. We have spent a lot of time working on the school building project and I would say he is the 5th pillar of the school building. As I look through the kaleidoscope of his life I see the many valued and meaningful roles that Ganesha played. First and foremost I see Ganesha, the family man. He loved his family unequivocally and selflessly. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and uncle. He took all of these roles to heart and he strove to honor, support, guide, and most importantly, love his family. He was at his happiest when he was surrounded by his family – even during those inevitable tough times that life has a way of throwing at you. His devotion to his family was the foundation of his actions, the anchor that defined and shaped his life. As the kaleidoscope turns, I see Ganesha – the friend. He was a good friend to so many! He could be counted on and depended on always. Whether you needed Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 sound counsel, an empathetic ear, a shoulder to lean on, he was ready, steadfast, willing and good fun. As I look out at the faces here in front of me, I see many, many friends and I know that they too will miss the friendship that Ganesha brought into their lives. The kaleidoscope turns again and I see Ganesha – a man defiant and the champion of others. He lived a principled life underpinned by a strong sense of right and wrong. Ganesha was never a man to step back from a challenge, to let something wrong stand unchallenged. Ganesha cared enough to act, to take a stand. Who can forget.... Ganesha continued to touch many others and as we look through the memories of his life, we see Ganesha as a respected colleague. He shared his expertise with all his colleagues, he worked hard and consistently and he remained a student of life. He never stopped learning. He never sat back and became complacent. He led by example and he mentored many. Ganesha was a role model and an inspiration to so many. It is impossible to pay tribute to Ganesha without recognising the important role that spirituality played in his life. As we have traveled today through some of the wonderful memories in Ganesha's life, we come to realise that his quiet faith guided his actions, words and deeds. He strove always to be the best he could be – family man, colleague, friend and champion to others. It is very hard to say goodbye and we don't want to, but we need to remember that he touched so many people's lives so positively. He leaves an amazing legacy behind. Ganesha left the world a better place than when he found it and for that we will always be grateful. Brother, we miss you – but we remember you fondly – always! Brother Ganesha, our Founder took you in his loving arms. He saw you needed rest. His garden must be beautiful for he only takes the best. May you all take comfort in knowing there is one more angel above us. I pray to our Founder to give his family the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss. Thank you. 19 19 by Surinder K. Bagga, Consultant & Architect for School Building Project Jeyaganesha Gangkatharan was the Building Project Coordinator for the Technical Team. He also worked closely with the children, staff and principal of the Sathya Sai School ensuring all their requirements are met at the new school. He was a down to earth person, a simple and humble human being. Ganesha was quite sociable. Over the last 3 years we have grown to know each other very well. Apart from the school project, he would also discuss his school visit and lessons learnt during their visit to Ottawa and Parliament Building. Sathya Sai Baba says: Love All, Serve All. Service to Man is Service to God. He would also talk about his association of saints that visited here in Toronto. He was very much interested in his spiritual growth. He and his wife would ensure that all family members including children interact with saintly personalities and seek their blessings. If anyone should ask me – Show me a person who can comply with these axioms – I will have no hesitation in stating that Jeyaganesha is an example of that entity. He was very fond of his father and took good care of him. From my association with him, I can tell he was dedicated to his entire family. As you all know, Ganesha was fully involved in the school Building Project. The moment that I would arrive in Toronto for my site visits – his time, efforts, resourcefulness were fully assigned to me. He would have a long list of items to discuss. He was particular about the school being unique, aesthetically pleasing and contained all details of which any value oriented school requires. During an interview between Sai Baba and a devotee, the devotee asked what the most important task of a human being is. Baba replied “DUTY”. I can say that Ganesha performed all his duties with a smile, full of confidence, determination, compassion, knowledge and understanding. He would discuss the layout and details of each room ranging from classrooms, music room, gymnasium, science room and computer room. He would also discuss current challenges at hand, and would come up with suggestions for a resolution. There was no shortage of his in depth knowledge, experience and resources to implement in the school. He was fully committed and would follow up on outstanding issues regularly. Even though he had a full time job, he would adjust his time to be at the site meetings, if it even meant for him to start his office work at 3 am in the morning...... so he can get time off to attend the site meetings. His contributions to the school project are significant and he will be greatly missed. Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 He has fulfilled his mission on earth during a very short time, just at 48 years old.......... which many will require many births to accomplish. He has done it and left a legacy for the children to follow his ideals. Let us join hands and pray that God grants strength and courage to his children and family to take over his role… and we as a technical team and colleagues follow a similar path towards liberation and fulfilment of our own. Let us all come together and help the family wherever we can help make a difference. Just want to mention that my wife was very touched and her heart melted when Ganesha offered to take three weeks of vacation and spend time in Windsor to help us out when our son was very ill.... such a kind and noble soul. We will miss him dearly. 20 20 School Felicitates Walk for Values M.C. Randell Adjei Following the peaceful Monday morning meditation on June 22, 2015, the gymnasium burst into lively, positive energy with the visit of Randell Adjei, who had been invited to receive felicitations from the school for his work as one of the emcees at the 2015 Walk for Values. He was introduced by Vinoj Suthakaran, the Youth Coordinator for Region 1 of the SSIO, Canada. Vinoj mentioned to the students how impressed he was by the great amount of energy Randell has, and commented that he never stops smiling. Randell is a poet and the founder of R.I.S.E. (Reaching Intelligent Souls Everywhere). He spreads love and positive energy everywhere. Everything he does is aligned with what the Walk for Values stands for. Randell was impressed with the discipline of the students and the fact that all their eyes were ready to learn. He told the students not to take the school for granted and to do their best every day. He said, “How powerful it is to be in a space like this. As the garland grows, you are growing too. You are here not just for yourself, but for each other.” [Note: his visit was on the third morning following the two graduations and the garlands were still growing in length.] “How powerful it is to be in a space like “this. As the garland grows, you are growing too. You are here not just for yourself, but for each other.” Self-confidence plays a big part in the students’ growth and Randell shared an experience to illustrate. He had had the privilege of meeting the President of General Motors. The man came from a family of eight children, and was the only one who went to university. His friends and family told him he wouldn’t make it. But he believed in himself and he made it. Thereafter, his eldest daughter graduated from an Ivy League school in the U.S. He encouraged his children to believe in themselves and used to ask them, “What are you?” and they would reply, “I am excellent.” He would ask, “Why?” and they would respond, “Because I am capable.” Being a poet, Randell knows that words are very powerful. He shared with the students: The words I tell myself are very important. The words I hear are very important. The words I speak are very important. He asked the students not to give up when struggling and to say, “I fell, but I’m going to stand back up.” A plaque of appreciation for Randell’s participation in the Walk for Values was presented to him by Mr. Manish Rughani, on behalf of the Sathya Sai School, the Parent Council, the Walk for Values Team, and the Sathya Sai International Organisation (SSIO), Canada. Mr. Rughani happily announced that Randell is now a member of our Walk for Values Team. Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 21 21 Human Value for May/June TRUTH It is easier to perceive error than to find truth, for the former lies on the surface and is easily seen, while the latter lies in the depth, where few are willing to search for it. – Goethe Birth and death arise out of illusion. Every day in this world, many beings are born and many die. Birth and death happen according to the time and circumstances. Between birth and death, man gets deluded by the physical body and develops various relationships at the physical level. He identifies himself with the body and gets carried away by the feeling of I and mine. This is a grave mistake. So long as the body lasts, you are related to so and so. Once the body perishes, what happens to your relationship? True relationship lies at the Spirit level and not at the physical level. Prior to birth who is related to whom? What happens after death? In fact, both birth and death are the results of delusion because of which you are unable to realise Divinity. As we are enmeshed in this worldliness, we are unable to comprehend the transcendental principle. True spiritual practice lies in understanding one's true identity. One should enquire, "Who am I"? All the spiritual practices are meant to make you realise who you really are. Everyone uses the term 'I' while introducing himself. It means that the principle of 'I' (Self) present in you is the same as the one in others. But man is unable to understand this oneness. He is carried away by the differences based on physical body. Consequently, he is giving room to conflicts and unrest. Birth and death are related to the body and not to the individual soul. Mind is responsible for both. Everything is man's own making. Life is a dream. How can anything that appears in a dream be true? It is all a mere illusion. So long as you are immersed in this delusion, you cannot have the vision of God. It is only when you break the shackles of illusion, can you experience the reality…. Once you realise that you are not the body and nothing in this world belongs to you, you will not suffer. Everything in this world is of your own making. Nothing is real. It is only God, the embodiment of love, who is with you and in your always. Bereft of love, man cannot exist. Love is your life. Love is the light that dispels the darkness of ignorance. One who does not cultivate love will be born again and again. – Sri Sathya Sai Baba, December 25, 2003 Newsletter # 18 June 27 2015 22 22 Grade 3 Students: The World I Dream Of Love The world I dream of Is one filled with love.
