March 2015 Siren - Vero Beach Yacht Club
VEGAS COMES TO VERO
The crowd went wild when Marilyn Munroe (aka Gailyn Addis) made a surprise visit to Frank Sinatra (aka
Michael Dutra) during the 3rd Celebrity Series night. And then, when Liza Minelli (Gailyn again, talented lady)
appeared onstage…..well….it was a night to remember!
VBYC CO-HOSTS IRC CHAMBER WITH MARINE BANK
Indian River County Chamber members enjoyed an After Hours Event at the Club where they mixed with their
business peers, enjoyed hearty appetizers and the music of the Bobby Owen Band. Thanks to all for a
fun evening.
COMMODORE’S LOG
Dear Members,
Barely into my term as your Commodore and it’s been busy with two very successful Celebrity
Series performances, a Chamber Business-After-Hours event co-hosted with Marine Bank that
drew a large crowd of potential new members and F&B revenues at near record levels. Let’s keep
this momentum going!
We are also launching a new event called “What’s On Your Mind?” This monthly meeting is
intended to keep everyone connected and informed.
With our new computer system we have the capability, via the new website, to disseminate information (the Siren,
monthly statements, etc.) to the entire membership electronically. There are many good reasons for moving in this
direction, not the least of which is significant cost savings. You will also get important information faster and in so doing
we will save administrative time that can better be used to serve and support members.
You will be getting regular requests to provide/update email addresses and other contact information. Please do so and
we will all be winners.
Sincerely,
Glenn Rose
Commodore
2015 Annual Meeting
Members attended the Annual Meeting to elect the 2015 Commodore Glenn Rose and Board of Directors Stuart Kennedy, Donnie Young, Jim Miskel and Barbara Ebstein. Recognition was given to staff Dan Coutard and Pat Byars for
loyal service and to volunteers Judi Wisniewski, Barbara Ebstein, Mary Ann Miskel and Michele Hollingworth for their
contributions. The family of Bruce McIntyre received the Yachtsman’s Award. Let the new year begin!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
LOOKS TO 2015
DON LE WAND is a seasonal member with a home and
sailboat in New Jersey. His Krogan 42,
Mariah, will soon be replaced by a
Krogan 52, on which he plans to cruise
the Caribbean. Don is an engineer, and
he looks forward to helping us keep
VBYC in perfect repair. He is in the
process of selling his business and
retiring, so he will be spending more time in Vero come
fall. Sponsored by Stuart Kennedy.
As we start 2015 Stuart Kennedy and I,
the co-chairs of your Membership
Committee, want to express our gratitude
for the fine work done by the Committee
members in 2014. In particular we want
to thank former co-chair, Vice
Commodore Hollingworth and
Committee members Charlie Jacobs, Ione Stuart Kennedy
Carr, Glendora Morris and Christie Brooks for their
efforts. Our plan for this year is to build on the
progress made by the Committee in 2014 and to
continue bringing in new members to the Club.
KEN AND LINDA ARGENT are from England. Ken is
newly-retired and the happy owner
of a new Grady White and member
of the “Grady Bunch.” They look
forward to boating and socializing
at the club. Sponsored by Mary Ann
Miskel.
We know that you have heard this
before – but it is true – a vibrant and
growing membership is important to the
health of the Club. One of the things that
your Membership Committee is planning
this year is an organized effort to reach
out to members of other community
Jim Miskel
organizations to acquaint them with the
benefits of joining the Yacht Club. So, if there is a
particular organization that you think we should
contact, please do let the Membership Committee know.
In Remembrance
Nancy H. Ireland January 16, 2015
We will miss her.
Any other ideas that you might have about ways to
promote the Club and identify prospective members
would, of course, also be appreciated.

PEOPLE & EVENTS
SHIPMATES
Dear Shipmates,
Hearts and flowers, a sea of red and lots of smiling faces
made Valentine’s Day special for Club members. Thanks
to Helga McCahan and her team for the beautiful decorations and congrats to Annie Caton for winning the
raffle. A fun evening!
I am delighted to have been chosen as your 2015
President. The Shipmates is a
wonderful way to gather with
friends, assist with social events
and to contribute to the Club.
The Valentine’s Day Dance Party,
enjoyed by all, is just the first of
an exciting line-up in the planning for this year.
Our annual Fashion Show Luncheon will be held on
March 13 at 11:30 am. Once again Glendora Morris
will organize the event with Patchington. You’ll want to
check out the new Spring outfits, the models and their
escorts. All Club members, including the gentlemen, are
invited.
Our regular meetings, held the second Friday of the
month, include the popular 50/50. Hold on to those
tickets because this year we are adding another drawing
for a free lunch.
And finally, a big “Thank You” to 2014 President Millie
LaCanfora for her enthusiasm and leadership last year.
If you are interested in joining the Shipmates please let
me know. Shipmates is a great way to meet the Club
ladies and make new friends. We always welcome new
members!

FLORIDA COUNCIL OF YACHT CLUBS NEWS
The FCYC General Meeting was held on January 9th with 30 of 36 clubs in attendance.
The 2015 Budget was approved as was the 2015 slate of Officers with Tom Smith as
Commodore. Reciprocity between clubs was reinforced with a reminder that each club
must treat FCYC visiting members as they do their own by extending all privileges.
The Key Biscayne Chief of Police, Fire Chief and City Manager reported on the many
boating accidents and the out-of-town boaters who invade the community from Miami to hold wild
parties on Mushta Flats. Closure is planned due to recent deaths.
Other agenda items included a reminder that FCYC pins should be sold or given to all new members as well as the “FCYC
Guide to the Clubs by Land & Water”, both available from the Ships Store. And it was announced that the FCYC may soon
hold a seat on the Fish & Wildlife Commission.
For the 2015 Council Cruise from San Francisco to Ensenada, MX – Oct. 10-17, 2015, the Council has added a 3-night,
pre-cruise land package from Oct. 7-9 in San Francisco. Please refer to the recent email you received or the posting on the
Club bulletin board.
The next FCYC Meeting will be held on March 13 & 14 at the Isles Y.C. in Punta Gorda.
