Established in 1856 by a local farmer, Thomas Altham, who opened the family’s first butcher’s shop
in Morecambe.
Through dedication to quality produce and service, Althams has grown to become one of the oldest
and largest independent family owned butchers in the country and today it is run by James and
Richard, great-great-grandsons of the founder. Together with Val still playing an important daily role
and Thomas now dedicating his time to the farm.
As a Company, whose origins were farm based; and indeed today the fourth and fifth generation of
the family are still involved on a daily basis in farming and butchery.
We continue to take great care in sourcing, selecting and preparing all our products using
traditional methods.

HACCP & Risk Assessment
Carbon Footprint
All areas of our business are subject to full Hazard Analysis (HACCP).
Detailed checks are documented and recorded to ensure complete
quality assurance.
Cycle to Work Scheme, 30% of our staff cycle to work, including our
Managing Director, this reduces the effect of our Carbon Footprint by
over 25 tonnes per year. With carefully dedicated delivery days and
routes we aim to reduce this further each year.
Microbiological
To accomplish and maintain the highest quality standards we use an
independent UKAS accredited microbiological laboratory to carry out
random product, water and surface sampling..
We recycle all our cardboard.
Quality Assurance
We have a dedicated quality assured team who carry out internal and
external audits, working alongside the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
There are many similarities between aspects of Halal requirements
and aspects of food law. As a food business operator that handles
Halal we must not only comply with food law but with the Islamic
Sharia (Law) related to food of Halal origin.

in England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland and Republic Ireland. All our
matured beef is aged to a minimum of 21 days. Once matured it
will be butchered by our specialists to the customer’s specification.
(Beef from Ireland and the Bord Bia scheme is also included in our prime selection
to guarantee we have quality supply at the right price!)

Althams Prime Lamb is sourced from farm assured farms within the
UK and Ireland. Due to our location the majority of our lamb comes
from Lancashire, Cumbria and North Yorkshire whenever possible.
These natural areas produce a tender and flavourful lamb.
Once matured it will be butchered by our specialists to the
customer’s specification.

Althams Traditional Lamb reflects a history of which we are justly
proud; supplying a regionally produced and traditionally prepared
farm assured Lamb. Our selection includes the following…
The Suffolk (Cross): Suffolk sheep, a relatively large breed,
developed in England, well known for its high quality meat.
The Suffolk’s have bare heads, black faces, and bare black legs
but no horns.
The Texel (Cross): Is hardy, tough and has excellent carcass
quality, it became popular for its well fleshed but lean carcass.
We also stock the following during their season.
The Herdwick Mutton: The Herdwick is a breed of domestic sheep
native to the Lake District, The name “Herdwick” is derived from the
Old Norse herdvyck, meaning sheep pasture. (Season Oct – March)
Red Bank Farm Salt Marsh Lamb: is reared on the marshes
of Morecambe Bay where the Sheep and Lambs are allowed to
graze freely. The tide washed marshes support an abundance of salt
tolerant grasses and herbs such as samphire, sparta grass, sorrel, sea
lavender and thrift. These help to give the lamb it’s tender texture and
unique light flavour. (Season July – Oct)
All our Althams Traditional Lamb is traditionally aged for 7 days.

The majority of Althams Prime Pork is specially selected from BPEX
Farm Assured stock, maintaining all the animal welfare and quality
standards of British Pork. Prime Pork is aged for 4-6 days. Pork may
also be sourced from the EU dependant on customer requirements.
We mainly select from the following British born breeds of pig:
The British Landrance, The British White and The Duroc:
These are very versatile breeds, high lean meat content, in a
superbly fleshed carcase, which is ideal for either fresh pork or
bacon production.

The Tamworth: The red-gold hair of the Tamworth ensures that it
is one of the most easily recognisable of the traditional pig breeds.
All our Althams Traditional Pork is traditionally aged for 7 days.
The Gloucestershire Old Spot: The Gloucestershire Old Spot is
a large meaty animal with a broad and deep body and large hams.
Its white coat has large clearly defined black spots.
