The 2011 Parrish Heritage Day Parade was successful - if you can measure
it by turnout, participation and overall
fun! The parade was the biggest by far
that I have seen since I have lived in the
area. And . . . I have never heard such
noise as the sirens, horns and people.
I want to thank everyone who participated and attended. It was a bunch of
fun and entertainment.
I especially want to thank our sponsors for this year - Ferraro’s Italian
Grille, First Manatee Bank in Parrish
and Leslie Wells Realty. Their financial
help aided in the expenses for the bounce
houses, band and DJ.
Hats off to Cindy Chin who organized and orchestrated the parade and to
Tami Vaughan who planned and coordinated the after-the-parade festivities
- which, this year, included more activities, and different kinds of food and vendors who had an opportunity to show off
their products and services.
The front page showed off the Boy
Scouts who led the parade, but there are
additional pictures inside this issue of
the Parrish Village News on page 19.
I hope you enjoy them and enjoyed the
festivities if you attended, There was
a little bit of everything in the parade children from two schools, the Knights
of Columbus, individuals, organizations,
businesses and people who just wanted
to be in it. Thank you all!
What is the Parrish Civic Association?
The Parrish Civic Association is
a group of interested individuals who
work to make the Parrish community
better. In the absence of any incorporation, Parrish is governed by the Manatee
Board of County Commissioners.
In order to promote the viewpoints
and interests of the community, the Parrish Civic Association works very hard
to obtain input (i.e. the recent survey
on the future of Parrish) to provide the
County so that the Commissioners and
planners can consider our needs and interests when developing guidelines for
the Parrish area of the County.
Additionally, the PCA holds important meetings for the residents of the area
and brings people from the County and
other areas of interest to Parrish so that
we can talk with them and make our feelings know. These speakers also keep us
informed about issues and concerns affecting our area.
One of the more recent speakers was
Sheriff Brad Steube. He talked about the
crime and crime prevention in our area
of Manatee County and what his department is doing for us.
He also listened to residents’ con-
John Osborne from the Manatee County
Planning Department
Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube
cerns and made notes on significant issues so he and his department could address their concerns.
Another County person spoke to
residents about the modifications that
the County is working on for the Comprehensive Plan for Manatee County.
That was John Osborne. He sought input from residents and the recent survey
results will be compiled and provided to
his department for planning purposes.
The Parrish Civic Association has a
Board of Directors and consists of volunteers. You can become a member of the

Personalized Pest Control Service
Makes PROEX Different
Manatee County CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE
The meeting will differ from last year’s where County staff made presentations
in response to issues like the need for a larger library and the 301 road project. This
year, the Commissioners want to hear from area residents about their concerns and
issues. So, following the presentations, there will be time for residents to speak to
the Commissioners about whatever is on their minds.
Please plan to attend this very important meeting. It will be held at the Parrish
Community Center / Y located at 12214 US Highway 301 N in Parrish.
Manatee Utilities: Low reuse water
pressure the result of dry season
Officials ask customers to conserve when possible
and irrigate during off-peak hours
During the dry months leading up to Southwest Florida’s rainy season, Manatee
County Utilities officials are anticipating periods of low pressure on the reclaimed
system and are asking reclaimed water customers to conserve irrigation water or to
water during off-peak hours.
Officials say many reclaimed water customers are experiencing low irrigation
pressure because lower precipitation results in less reclaimed water to irrigate lawns
and gardens resulting in a higher demand on the system. Low pressures could continue until the rainy season which typically begins in June.
“We need customers to recognize that reclaimed water is a finite resource and
needs to be conserved just like potable water,” said Dan Gray, Utilities Director.
In addition to asking customers to conserve reuse water, Utilities officials are
also suggesting they irrigate during off-peak times of the day. By irrigating in the
evening, customers may notice increased reuse water pressure.
Each day, Manatee’s Agricultural Reuse System (M.A.R.S.) supplies approximately 18 million gallons of quality irrigation water to approximately 6,000 customers, including residential, commercial, golf course, park and farm customers.

Mike Altland, shown above, removing a wasp nest from a home
and preparing to treat an attic for pests
Mike Altland has been in the pest control business for over twenty five years. In 1983, he transferred to Florida, with a national pest control company where he learned almost everything there was
to know about pest control in the Florida environment. He and his staff were retained to service the
United States Dept. of Agriculture’s research facility in Port St. Lucie, Florida, along with treating
the homes of many high profile persons including Donald Trump, the Kennedys, Jackie Gleason, Sophia Loren, John Lennon and the BeeGees, so he well knows how to provide the personal treatment
and demanding service that is called for in some situations. After retiring from the national company
in 2003, he started Proex Pest Control — something he had wanted to do since childhood. (Mike
tells us he had an extensive collection of butterflies and insects housed in glass boxes when he was a
kid and was fascinated with insects.) His philosophy is relatively simple, however: take the time to
inspect each home carefully, strive for perfection, and take the time to ensure that each customer is
satisfied. Mike isn’t trying to make the usual 10 to 15 house calls per day as most national concerns
demand of their workers. He would rather make fewer calls and “spend the time to do the job right.”
What that nets out to in Mike’s words is, “Guaranteed same day service, spending the time necessary
to understand each individual situation and not becoming a cookie cutter operation. Everyone tells
me I do more than the other guys.”
Mike performs all the work himself. He is certified, licensed and insured in Florida to perform
Pest Control, Lawn and Ornamental Control and Termite Control including Fumigation and is also
University-certified with Texas A & M for Termite Biology and Control with another certification
from Purdue University for Pest Control Technology. The significant point he made is that maintenance is a MUST. In the tropical areas of southwest Florida, a homeowner cannot let up on preventative measures. He says the more time he spends inspecting, the less amount of pesticides are
needed to control pests. He has limited his service to Manatee County so he can respond quickly to
customer calls. Most of the service he performs is on the outside of the house where the problems
usually originate. He said, “If you minimize the amount of outside pest activity, the inside of your
home will naturally have less problems.”
What really makes his service different is the inspection and treatment of lesser utilized areas
where homeowners do not frequent, such as attics. Sometimes pests can start in these areas and,
if unchecked, can spread throughout the house. Mike often spends two hours carefully checking a
home on his first call for service.
Mike says his prices are extremely competitive and that his goal is “to be known for customer’s
saying, ‘That’s the best pest control service I’ve ever had.’”

Boy, do I love comfort food!
Handed down from generation

Hibiscus Festival
scheduled for April 30th
Plant it on your calendar to attend the Hibiscus Festival, on Saturday, April 30th
from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Family Life Center of the First Baptist Church, Manatee
Avenue and 13th Street West in downtown Bradenton. The Festival features the 47th
Annual Hibiscus Show and includes mini-seminars, art exhibits and real Hibiscus
tea. This is a nationally sanctioned Hibiscus show sponsored by the Golby-Reasoner
Chapter of the American Hibiscus Society. As a special feature, the Festival also
includes the very popular sale of exotic Hibiscus plants.
You will see 400 to 500 or more Hibiscus blooms from all over Central and
Southern Florida. If you have not seen hybrid Hibiscus blooms before, you will find
it difficult to believe the size and colors of the blooms that will be displayed.
The Festival will also feature a number of local artists displaying their work, work that emphasizes flowers, gardens and the out of doors. Several local Hibiscus
gardeners will be conducting mini-seminars on subjects like raising Hibiscus, pruning and propagating, and decorating with blooms. You can even purchase Hibiscus
tea. In addition, a Hibiscus plant will be given away every half-hour of the show.
For the second year in a row our cold weather damaged many tender plants,
including Hibiscus. This is the only opportunity that folks in our community have
to purchase hybrid Hibiscus plants, including some varieties that may have won top
honors at the show. Parking, admission, art show and min-seminars are FREE.

Brief history of Tropicana and Anthony T. Rossi
Anthony T. Rossi (1900–1993) was born in Italy on the island of Sicily. He had
the equivalent of a high school education and emigrated to the United States when he
was 21 years old. He drove a taxicab, was a grocer in New York, farmed in Virginia
and then moved to Florida in 1940 where he farmed and was a restaurateur. His first
involvement with the Florida citrus industry was fresh fruit gift boxes sold by Macy’s
and Gimbel’s department stores in New York City, New York.
In 1947, Rossi settled in Palmetto, Florida, and began packing fruit gift boxes
and jars of sectioned fruit for salads under the name Manatee River Packing Company. As the fruit segment business grew, the company moved to a larger location in
east Bradenton, Florida, and changed its name to Fruit Industries. The ingredients for
the fresh fruit salads on the menu of New York’s famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel were
supplied by Fruit Industries. At the east Bradenton location, Rossi began producing
frozen concentrate orange juice as a natural extension of the fruit section business.
Thus began the evolution of Tropicana Pure Premium.
In 1952, with growth of the orange juice business in mind, Rossi purchased the
Grapefruit Canning Company in Bradenton. The fresh fruit segments and orange
juice business were so successful that he discontinued production of fruit boxes. He
developed flash pasteurization in 1954, a process that rapidly raised the temperature
of juice for a short time to preserve its fresh taste. For the first time, consumers could
have the fresh taste of pure not-from-concentrate juice in a ready to serve chilled
package. The juice, Tropicana Pure Premium, became the company’s flagship product. In 1957, the company’s name was changed to Tropicana Products, Inc. to reflect
the growing appeal of the Tropicana brand.
Tropicana purchased one million dollars worth of refrigerated trucks to deliver
Pure Premium. Soon, 2,000 dairies delivered Pure Premium orange juice to the doorsteps of consumers each morning. By 1958, a ship, S.S. Tropicana, was taking 1.5
million gallons of juice to New York each week from new base at Cape Canaveral,
Florida. From 1960 to 1970, Tropicana utilized TOFC (trailers on flatbed cars) to
move the juice more efficiently. In 1970, Tropicana orange juice was shipped as
finished goods via refrigerated boxcars in one weekly round-trip from Florida to
Kearny, New Jersey. By the following year, the company was operating two 65-car
unit trains a week, each carrying around 1 million gallons of juice. The “Great White
Juice Train” (the first unit train in the food industry, consisting of 150 100-ton insulated boxcars fabricated in the Alexandria, Virginia, shops of Fruit Growers Express)
commenced service on June 7, 1971 over the 1,250-mile (2,012-kilometer) route.
An additional 100 cars were soon incorporated into the fleet, and small mechanical
refrigeration units were installed to keep temperatures constant on hot days. In 2004,
Tropicana’s rail fleet of 514 cars traveled over 35 million miles – a method that is
three times more fuel efficient than other shipping methods.
In the 21st century, the Tropicana-CSX Juice Trains have been the focus of efficiency studies and have received awards. They are considered good examples of
how modern rail transportation can compete successfully with trucking and other
modes to carry perishable products.
Tropicana Products, Inc. went public in 1969. The stock was first sold over the
counter, but gained a listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol TOJ.
In the same year, it became the first company in the citrus industry to operate its own
plastic container manufacturing plant.
Rossi sold Tropicana to Beatrice Foods in 1978. He then retired, and was inducted into the Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1987. Under Beatrice, Tropicana
had the financial resources to develop more oranges. In 1985, Tropicana debuted
Tropicana Pure Premium HomeStyle orange juice, which featured added pulp.
In the 1980s, Tropicana made history by being the first company to be acquired
by The Seagram Company, Ltd.. In the decade that followed, they introduced new
juice beverage creations, including the orange line of bottled and frozen juice blends.
In the early nineties under Seagram, Tropicana also began to expand distribution
to global markets. They formed a partnership with bananas to process and distribute
Kirin-Tropicana juices in Japan. By that time, the company was also distributing

Tropicana Pure Premium in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany,
Argentina, Panama and Sweden. As the 1990s continued, Tropicana further expanded internationally, entering several more Latin American countries, Hong Kong and
China.
Seagram Beverage Group acquired Dole Food Company’s global juice business
in 1995, including the Dole brands in North America, and Dole, Fruvita, Looza and
Juice Bowl juices and nectars in Europe. Dole was operated under Tropicana Dole
Beverages North America and Tropicana Dole Beverages International.
Tropicana was acquired by PepsiCo in 1998, which combined it with the Dole
brand for marketing purposes. It has become the world’s leading producer of branded fruit juices. Citing the decreased productivity of Florida’s orange crop after recent
hurricanes, Tropicana now uses Brazilian oranges in some of its juice.
Anthony T. Rossi died on January 24, 1993.

The March meeting of the Parrish Professionals had more than just the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. There was more than just a little bit of green going on. Oh
sure, the members were festive in their dress with their green clothing or necklace

Flroida Railroad Experience
progresses
Plans for the Florida Railroad Experience (FRE) continue to develop and progress toward making the project a reality is moving forward. We again thank all who
have contributed money to FRE – so far we have received about $30,000 toward
our goal of $50,000. This money has helped fund the initial project work – surveys,
architectural drawings, 501 (c) 3 tax exempt status, etc. – as well as to start our quest
to secure grant funds. There are grants available to FRE because the project will
preserve the history and effect of railroads on Manatee County as well as to provide
educational and recreational benefits.
The project will be housed on eleven acres of land where the current Florida
Railroad Museum operates and will include exhibits and displays from the model
railroading group called RealRail along with train simulators, a true museum and
displays of full-size train cars from days’ past that operated in the Parrish area.
There will be a presentation on the project status at the April 21st meeting with
the County Commissioners at the Community Center. We invite you to come and
hear about this exciting project. And if you have not yet become a founding donor,
you can do so by sending a check to Florida Railroad Experience, P.O. Box 811,
Parrish, FL 34219. A donation of $500 or more will get your family’s name on the
Founding Donor plaque at the entrance to the new building and passes to tour the
museum.

My name is Leslie Wells
and I am a plant killer
Leslie Wells
They say affirmation is the first step
to knowing you have a problem. Admittedly, I do not have a green thumb
or even a green pinkie finger. I don’t
love spending endless hours digging in
the dirt, pruning or even watering the
poor plants before they turn brown. I’ve
certainly been guilty of death by dehydration more times than I would like to
admit!
However, I am truly an admirer of plush landscaping and every year wish that
I had what it takes to have a beautiful flower garden. I walk through the outdoor
garden center as though it was Disney World and think about the gorgeous colors, visualizing how breathtaking my home would look. I check the prices, read the instructions to see if they are sun or shade plants, and I can visualize the look. Sadly, the
reality is buying, hauling, planting, fertilizing and waiting for their inevitable demise.
While it is difficult to assign a proper dollar value to a well-maintained yard and
stunning gardens, having one or both may be as good as putting a sign in the yard that
says, “This is a well- loved home, buy me, live in my neighborhood, follow my lead.”
Curb appeal can help a so-so home “blossom.” It “plants the seed” in the mind’s eye
of the buyer, (especially our friends from up north), of our fabulous Florida life style.
A well-maintained yard drums up visions of family picnics, barbeque and sharing
lemonade on the lanai. We picture casual days while the kids and dogs are running
carefree.
For those of you with green thumbs and fingers, my hat is off to you. The effort you put forth makes me smile with green envy. For those of you who lean more
towards my affliction, there is hope. Summer is on the way and there will soon be
hundreds of high-school kids begging for a part time job. They’ll mow the grass;
they’ll plant some landscaping and I bet you could even talk them into using a water
can. It isn’t a cure, of course, but it’s a start on the road to recovery. When I see my
plants living more than a week, I am tempted to give gardening just one more try.
Nevertheless, I am realistic. Green just might not be my color.

April is Water Conservation Month
Jack Tichenor, University of Florida / Manatee County Extension Service
April is traditionally one of the driest months of the year and typically marks the peak demand season for public water
suppliers. Many residents begin establishing new landscaping and increasing their lawn irrigation due to dry conditions
and rising temperatures.
If you haven’t thought about conserving water,
now is a great time to start. On average, up to half
of your home water is used outdoors. One way to reduce your water consumption is by practicing FloridaFriendly Landscaping™ techniques. Florida-Friendly
Landscaping, established by the University of Florida’s
Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences for the
Florida Yards & Neighborhoods Program, is a commonsense way to landscape that conserves water and
protects the environment. Florida-Friendly Landscaping emphasizes the following nine principles:
Right Plant, Right Place — Plants selected to suit a
specific site will require minimal amounts of water, fertilizers and pesticides. Group plants according to their
maintenance needs.
Water Efficiently — Irrigate only when your lawn and
landscape need water. Efficient watering is the key to
a healthy Florida yard and conservation of limited resources.
Reduce Storm Water Runoff — Water running off
your yard can carry pollutants such as soil, debris, fertilizer and pesticides that can adversely impact water
quality. Reduction of this runoff will help prevent pollution.
Protect the Waterfront — Waterfront property,
whether on a river, stream, pond, bay or beach, is very
fragile and should be carefully protected to maintain
freshwater and marine ecosystems.
Incorporating these simple steps will not only save
water, but will help protect the environment for future
generations. For more information about how you can
conserve water inside and outside your home, please
visit the District’s web site at WaterMatters.org/conservation or The Manatee County Agriculture and Extension Service web site at Manatee.ifas.ufl.edu.

Mulch — Maintaining a 3-inch layer of mulch will
help retain soil moisture, prevent erosion and suppress
weeds.
Attract Wildlife — Plants in your yard that provide
food, water and shelter can sustain Florida’s diverse
wildlife.
Manage Yard Pests Responsibly — Unwise use of
pesticides can harm people, pets, beneficial organisms
and the environment.
Recycle — Grass clippings, leaves and yard trimmings

waste disposal.

The Rustic Rose opens third store - second in area
The Rustic Rose (located in Parrish in the Alris Shopping Plaza) has opened its
third store - the second in the area in Lakewood Ranch in the Publix Shopping center
at the corner of Highway 70 and Lakewood Ranch Boulevard.
Rosalyn Housely has been so pleased with the wonderful response that her store
has garned in the Parrish area that she opened the new store on March 15, 2011. The
new store offers the same “delightful shopping and affordable decorating” her stores
are known for at the two locations in this area as well as the original store in Hayesville, North Carolina.
The new store is almost identical to the store in Parrish with the same kinds of
merchandise as well as some new items such as body products and a line of inspirational books. Both stores offer a rich variety of jewelry, handbags, decorating
items, candles (such as Wood Wick), eyeglasses and sun glasses, placemats, pashmina shawls, watches, wine racks, artificial flowers, napkins, coasters and many more
wonderful items - all at affordable prices! The items look incredibly “high end,” but
the prices are totally awesome!
Ladies like the merchandise according to Housely and even the Parrish shoppers
have traveled to the new store to lend their support and check out the new items. She
said that the ladies liked to see the items in a slightly different atmosphere, plus it’s
fun to shop in both stores.
Both stores are decorated with lovely furniture accent pieces to display the merchandise. The merchandise, by the way, is always different and changing as Rosalyn
goes to market and buys for the stores.
Rosalyn’s husband, Jim, has done the custom designing of the new store as well
as the Parrish one to make it truly unique. Shoppers have told Rosalyn that the atmosphere is so welcoming and the scents and music so appealing that they like to linger
in the great surroundings.
The store offers a great selection of hostess gifts, does gift wrapping, sells cards
and offers wonderful gift bags for items bought.
Rosalyn wants to thank all the Parrish customers for their wonderful support and
invites them to come visit the new store and “take a peek” at the new items and the
extraordinary merchandise offered.

Home safety tips and tricks
Jan Kaufman
I recently attended a presentation from the Manatee Sheriff’s office about safety at home. Almost everything he spoke about were common sense, yet all
too often we get complacent about our own safety and
we don’t use the things that are readily available to us
to help ensure our safety at home as well as in our car.
If you ever get a chance to go to a presentation, it’s
well worth the time, and it’s also lots of fun. The law
enforcement groups around us are here to help and by
sharing this information it will definitely make life a bit
easier for all of us.
Here are a few ideas I’d like to pass along:
it saves you from losing some of your belongings
from in the house.
Outside
w Make sure that the plants and trees around your
home don’t provide a place for a burglar to hide
so trim them back from the top or in the case of a
tree . . . trim up the low hanging branches.
w Ensure the outside of your home has good lighting around the entrances and the porch. Motion
Sensor lighting is inexpensive and easy to install.
w Do NOT hide house keys in mailboxes or planters
or under doormats. Give a trusted friend and/or
neighbor a duplicate key in case you get locked
out.
Locks and Alarms
w Install and use good deadbolt locks in your doors. Going away on a trip or are you a snowbird?
Here’s an interesting point – 50% of burglars get in
w Get together with your neighbors to keep an eye
on your home, especially if it is for a long time.

w Be sure to secure your sliding doors with locks or
w Keep your garage closed and locked and be sure
the door leading into your house is locked as well
maybe a wooden dowel in the rack to ensure the
door can’t slid.
w Leave on some lights inside or use a timing device to turn lights on and off while you are away.
w Be sure to close and lock your windows when you
leave the house – even if it’s just a quick trip to
w Turn on the radio to a talk show so anyone walking up to the house will hear people talking.
the store.
w Do you have a home alarm system? Use it.
w Have someone pick up your mail and newspapers
if you will be gone for more than a couple of days.
Whether you are going to be gone for a few days
or just to the store – use the alarm system. It’s well
w If you are a snowbird - have one of your neighbors check your home every few days just as a
worth the few seconds to activate it especially if

the door.
w If you are home alone, one idea is - as you are
heading to the door, call out somethng lik, “That’s
okay, honey - I’ll get it!” That will make the person think/know you are not alone.
Around the neighborhood
w Get to know your neighbors. It’s sometimes hard
to do with the different life styles today but it is
well worth the effort. A neighborhood potluck or
ice cream social is a good excuse to get together.
w Take that time to discuss safety issues around
your community.
w If you notice anything suspicious in your neighborhood – call the police immediately. It’s going
to be very helpful to the police if you call them
while you are watching what’s going on. Your
direct explanation of the type of vehicle, type
and color of clothing, hair style, shoe color, and
such will be VERY helpful to the officer who responds. Do not approach them by yourself. You
do not want to become part of the situation if it
all goes bad.
In Your Car
w Always lock your car. Always, Always, Always.
w Never leave your purse, laptop, briefcase, gifts,
cash or anything like that in plain sight in your
car. Put them in your trunk or in the covered
section in the back of your car. It only takes a
few seconds to break a car window and take your
possessions so take a few seconds to pack your
belongings out of sight and safe.
These are all simple ideas that we all know but we
sometimes forget to use when we are in a hurry. By
locking your door, watching the neighborhood, and
reaching out to others around you it will help ensure the
safety of the entire area.
Don’t make it easy for anyone to rip you off or
harm you. Be cautious, aware of your surroundings and
sensible about keeping your belongings locked.
These tips came from two sources. Some I gathered from the presentation I attended with the deputy
and others are detailed in a pamphlet available from
the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention
Section entitled “Let’s be Safe . . . at Home.” Thanks
so much to the Sheriff’s Office for making this information available to all of us! Want more information? – go

On being old
Pastor Bill Straitwell
Here is another email from a friend. Once again, I wish I’d have written it, but I didn’t. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
The other day a young person asked me how I felt
about being old. I was taken aback, for I do not think
of myself as old.
Upon seeing my reaction, she was immediately
embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting
question, and I would ponder it, and let her know.
Old Age, I decided, is a gift. I am now, probably for
the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over
my body, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes and the sagging
butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person
that lives in my mirror (who looks like my father!), but
I don’t agonize over those things for long.
I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become kinder to myself,
and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend.
I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for
not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement
gecko that I didn’t need, but looks so avante garde on
my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be
extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world
too soon: before they understood the great freedom that
comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to
read or play on the computer until 4:00 a.m. and sleep
until noon?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes
of the 50s, 60 & 70s, and if I, at the same time, wish to
weep over a lost love I will.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have
my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs
be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So
many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You
care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be
wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has
set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not
going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not
waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every
single day. (If I feel like it.)
May you always have a rainbow of smiles on your
face and the love of Jesus in your heart.
HOW TO STAY YOUNG
1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and
height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/
her.
2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. “An idle mind is the devil’s
workshop.”
4. Enjoy the simple things.
5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person
who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are
alive.
7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets,
keepsakes, music, plants, and hobbies.
8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable,
improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to
a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.
10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched
over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with
abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from
the jet set. They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again,
some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually
remember the important things.
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken.
How can your heart not break when you lose a loved
one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody’s
beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are
what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and
will never know the joy of being imperfect.
Fishing is really picking up!

A happy angler with a nice Trout she caught while fishing in Tampa Bay with Capt. Ric Liles
and Reel Simple Fishing Adventures.
Wow! What a difference a month makes. The bite in Tampa Bay has gone wild
with the warm water temperatures and the arrival of our white bait. This is the best
time of year, in my opinion, to fish Tampa Bay and the surrounding waters.
Trout and Spanish Mackerel have been the most consistent bite on my boat, and
they are the two species we have targeted the most. Most of the fish we have caught
have been on live bait but when not using live bait, I have had good success on any
on the Berkley Gulp baits and the Saltwater Assassin paddle tail jigs. Just a warning,
the Berkley baits will get more attention from the undesirables (pinfish, pufferfish,
grunts etc . . . ).
Now that the bite is on, I will put more efforts in fishing for Redfish and Tarpon.
We are starting to see a lot more Redfish schooled together. They are on the move
right now and where you find them one day may be a ghost town the next day. They
will settle down and get into a pattern and that is the time that you can really go out
and heart punch them. The slot limits on Redfish are 18” to 27” with a daily bag limit
of one per person. Patience is the key to catching these guys and it is very important
to be as quiet as you can while fishing the schools. One thing to keep in mind is that if
you can see them, than they can also see you. It sounds “kinda” silly but I try to stay
away from bright color clothing if I know that I am going to be fishing for Redfish
in shallow water.
The Tarpon have shown up at the Skyway and some of the other areas that we
see them this time of year and it appears that we are in store for a great season. The
adrenaline rush one gets from a Tarpon can only be explained by an angler that has
been on the other end of that battle. It’s fun to see the look in the eyes of a client
when you tell them that there is a chance they will hook a fish that is as big or bigger
than they are and may be older.
Fishing for the silver king is definitely not like fishing for bass in a farm pond.
Which, by the way, is something I used to really like to do when I visited my grandmother in Kentucky. It’s been over a year since the Snook kill and I see improvement
from last year, but we still have a long way to go to get back to where we were. If you
are catching Snook, please handle them with extra care; we will all be grateful for it.
Until next time, good luck and be safe on the water. Remember: don’t let your
kid be the one that got away; take them fishing. For charter information, you can
call (813) 601-2900 or email [email protected], or visit www.ReelSimpleFishing.com.

Activities at Williams keep students and staff busy
Williams goes “green”
Williams Elementary goes “green” with
their implementation of a paper recycling program. The Green Team, which consists of Principal Paul Hockenbury and a selected group of
fifth grade students recycle paper, plastic bottles,
and cardboard from classrooms every Tuesday
and Thursday mornings.
The recycled paper is sent to a mill in Georgia that breaks it down to pulp and uses that pulp
to make new paper products. To date, the Green
Team has recycled over one ton of paper. The
Green Team is just one of many ways that Williams students achieve the school district’s EdVantage Strategic Objective of students actively
engaging in global outreach.

Girls Running Club for 3rd thru 5th grades began Tuesday,
February 15th after school from 3 to 4 p.m. on campus.
Approximately 70 girls, meet to stretch, have a short
run as they build up their endurance and discuss health
related topics. The Running Club meets every Tuesday
until Saturday, April 30th when the girls will participate
in a two-mile run/race. Interns, staff members and parent volunteers assist Mrs. Schubring and Mrs. Lindsay on
Tuesdays. Mrs. Schubring and Mrs. Lindsay also participate in marathons on their own time and are using their
knowledge and training to bring a healthy lifestyle awareness to some of the students at school.

has given the opportunity for their 2nd through 5th grade
students to attend a six week long Music Camp. She is
offering two different sessions and has a total of 100
student participating in the camp. Students applied for
the no-cost camp which meets before school and were
given their choice of the instrument they would most
like to learn to play. The instruments included: guitar,
piano and percussion. The instruments are furnished by
the school except for the guitars. Students are mastering their skills in learning to read music, distinguish the
different sounds instruments make and play songs on
their instruments. Mrs. Hagan also offers chorus for
those who want to learn to read music and work on their
voice skills. The students are having a lot of fun while
learning to appreciate the gift of music.

Spencer (S.O.) and Genevieve Parrish Grand Marshalls for the 2011 Heritage Day festivities
Spencer (S.O.) and Genevieve Parrish are long time residents of Parrish, Florida. S.O. was born in
Parrish, December 9, 1919; he is the son of Spencer and Mabel (Cason) Parrish and he has two sisters,
Eunice Grimes and Wauneta Hinto.
S.O. went to school at the Parrish Elementary School and graduated from Palmetto High. He worked
on the railroad in Parrish before going into the US Army in 1941. He served during World War II. He
retired after serving 20 years in the Army. While serving in the armed forces, he and his family lived in
Germany, Japan and Okinawa. After retirement from the Army, he went to work for the U.S. Government
at the White House in Washington, D. C., for ten years during President Johnson’s tenure.
In 1971, S.O. moved his family back to Parrish and went to work for Manatee County Sheriff’ Department and after 15 years, he retired.
Throughout S.O.’s career, he has had many experiences to look back on and talk about; he has been a
true survivor and hero to his family and his country. He has also been a deacon of the First Baptist Church
of Parrish for many years.
Speaking of survivor, S.O. is the oldest living descendent of Crawford Parrish, one of the first settlers
of Parrish. Also, the land where the Parrish School House Community Center/YMCA is located, was
donated by S.O.’s Grandfather. And Spencer Parrish Road was named after S.O.’s father. His roots are
very deep in Parrish.
Genevieve (Tison) Parrish was born August 15, 1924, to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Tison in Lake Butler,
Florida. She attended schools in Parrish and Providence, Florida. She and S.O. married in 1942. She
was a stay-at-home Mom until her children were out of school; she then went to work at Manatee High
School in the lunchroom for 15 years. Genevieve has four sisters and one brother.
S.O. and Genevieve have four children, Julian who lives in Denver, Colorado, Jim who lives in Parrish, Sally Kirchman who also lives in Parrish and Jill Cunningham who lives in Bradenton. They have
eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

The Sandwich Generation:
getting the right balance
Jacqueline Felix, Felix Financial Group
Today’s “Sandwich Generation” has a unique financial burden. Many of today’s
families not only have to provide for themselves and their children, but also for their
aging parents as well. Where is a family to start when building a financial foundation
to meet this challenge? Many people would agree that life insurance is the first step.
But faced with the day-to-day reality of paying the bills, how can a young, growing
family get the protection they need and manage to fit the cost into their budget? Well,
the answer may be a matter of “getting the right balance.”

Permanent vs. Term Insurance?
Why not both? For decades families have struggled with a classic question: “Should
we purchase term insurance or is permanent insurance the better buy?” Term insurance is attractive for its initial lower premiums, while permanent insurance (for
example, whole life insurance) offers the benefits of a level, fixed premium and guaranteed cash value accumulation. There’s no simple, easy answer because one kind of
insurance is not necessarily “better” than the other, and they are certainly not mutually exclusive. And you don’t necessarily have to choose between them.
The Best of Both Worlds
You may be able to blend the affordability of term insurance with the cash value
accumulation of permanent insurance. Your agent can talk to you about how you
can initially purchase a term policy with a conversion feature – one that lets you
“convert” your term policy to permanent, cash value life insurance when it’s more
affordable for you, often without further evidence of insurability.
You can also purchase a smaller whole life policy and a term policy – with a conversion feature that you can choose to exercise. This allows you to choose a combination that best suits your budget and current needs, while giving you future flexibility
to meet your changing goals. It’s an ideal way to get all the coverage you need and
the cash value accumulation you want, at a price that’s right for you.

Time Passes, Needs Change
The only thing certain in life is change. Over the years, your family may grow, and
you’ll want to adjust your plan accordingly. More children mean more responsibility,
and you’ll want to be sure that they’re adequately protected. Looking to the future,
you’ll want to be prepared to help fund far-reaching goals such as your children’s
education, possibly a new home and, eventually supplement a comfortable retirement. A great advantage of the “package” concept is its flexibility. It can change
as you change. The term portion of the plan can be converted into value-building
permanent insurance. You can convert it all at once or over time.
When fully converted to a permanent plan, you’ll take maximum advantage of taxdeferred cash value accumulation. You can access available cash values by borrowing against them.* This can help you cover vital needs. In addition, if your policy is
with a mutual insurance company, the permanent insurance may be eligible to earn
dividends when declared by the insurer (dividends are not guaranteed). You can use
these dividends in a number of ways to enhance your plan.
Your Place On the Spectrum
You can think of your insurance options as a spectrum. On one end is permanent
insurance, with its guaranteed protection and cash value accumulation. On the other
end is term insurance, which offers financial protection, a lower initial premium, but
without cash value accumulation. After taking a close look at all the features and
benefits of each, you may find that striking a balance between permanent and term
insurance is the most appropriate place for you on the insurance spectrum.
Lay the Foundation Now
“Don’t put off until tomorrow what can be done today,” is the old adage. It’s true,
procrastination can hinder a person’s future goals. It’s best to lay a foundation for
your family’s future while young. Having an adequate plan in place is key to securing a brighter tomorrow.
For more information on life insurance or for a policy review, contact Jackie Felix,
Felix Financial Group, at 941.504.2376.
*Loans against your policy accrue interest at the current rate and decrease the cash value and death benefit
by the amount of the outstanding loan and interest.

A Letter from the PCA Membership Chairman
Dear Friends:
Heritage Day
I just got home from the Heritage Day parade and follow-on event at the
Florida Railroad Museum. I hope you were able to attend because if you
missed it, you missed a real fun time and a great chance to meet some
new friends and neighbors. Several people told me it was one of the best
parades ever and they were amazed at how many people participated.
And the crowd that gathered at the Railroad Museum afterwards was
very large with kids enjoying the bounce houses and parents enjoying
the band and the many vendors showing off their goods and services.
Thanks go to Cindy Chin and Tami and Rick Vaughn and all of their
helpers whose hard work made this such a fun event for all of us. Also,
thanks to the Florida Railroad Museum for allowing us to share their
facility. Another great day in Parrish!
The recent survey on Parrish
We are going to be presenting the final results of the survey on Parrish
in the May edition of the newspaper, but I want but share some of the
input with you now. We asked you to tell us what you like or dislike
about Parrish. Many of your responses started with something like, “We
love living here” or “I love Parrish and feel very blessed to live here” or
“I love the rural look and feel of Parrish” or “I love the friendly people.
People that don’t even know me wave when we pass each other” or “we
love Parrish and feel it’s a great place for our family to live.”
You went on from there to tell us what Parrish needs more or less of and
how some areas need to be cleaned up, but the overwhelming thing that
comes through is that we live here because there is just something about
Parrish that really appeals to us. Let’s hope that we can build on that to
make Parrish an even better place to live and raise our children. Together we can make that happen.
Rowing in the area
The season for collegiate rowing teams from northern schools to come
to our area and use the Fort Hamer Practice Facility is drawing to an
end, but already the calendar for this winter is beginning to fill up. The
teams from Harvard and Northeastern have already confirmed that they
will be back and several other teams have asked about using the Fort
Hamer facility. In addition, there are several regattas and other competitions scheduled for this summer at the Nathan Benderson facility just off
University Parkway.
Rowing is a new sport to many of us, but when you watch these rowers
practice and train, you quickly realize “these kids are in great shape.”
It’s great to see the Palmetto High boy’s and girl’s rowing teams starting
to take shape and we look forward to seeing them in competition soon.
I’m sure many of them have been inspired by watching the great rowers
from Harvard and other schools that have visited Parrish.
It is time once again for our membership drive. A few of you have already
paid your dues for 2011, and I’m hoping the rest of you will join, or re-join,
with us to continue the work to support our Parrish area.As you know, the Civic
Association works to bring forward the issues that affect our area and develop
solutions to those issues. We are part of the non-incorporated part of the county
and served by the Manatee Board of County Commissioners.
Here are some of the projects we supported in 2010:
w The Children’s Christmas Party for local, needy children. Approximately 125 children attended the party in 2010.
w Scholarships so that no child is prevented from attending the YMCA’s
Summer Youth Program.
w Hosting the Heritage Day Festival in the spring.
w Sponsoring a Board of County Commissioners Meeting in Parrish.
w Sponsoring our own monthly newspaper, the Parrish Village News, our
local website, parrishflorida.com, and an annual food drive in support
of the Manatee Food Bank.
w Obtaining a grant to improve Ola Mae Simms Park.
w Planting of trees at the post office.
w Monitoring the road improvement projects in our part of the county.
w Spearheading the Florida Railroad Experience (a project to build a
museum in Parrish for the Florida Railroad Museum and Realrail, formerly the Model Railroad Club of Sarasota.
Membership dues are the only source of revenue for the Civic Association;
your dues help support these events and activities. Through your dues, you are
helping make Parrish a better place for all of our children and families.
You may use the form in this paper and mail to P. O. Box 257, Parrish, Florida
34219. There are various categories of memberships. We hope that you will join
and be a part of this vibrant organization.
Thank you for your support.
