Technology & TSA
TSA—
—Preparing for
Tomorrow
Manatee TSA Reaches New Heights
The Technology Student Association, more commonly called TSA, is a DOE required co-curricular component for all Technology Education programs. Four years
ago Manatee County did not participate in any TSA State
events. Three years ago was our first State Conference,
and at that point we had no First Place winners. Last year
our district had 11 First Place winners. This year our
district boasts 61 First Place winners plus a First Place
TEAM award. All total we had 129 student awards in
gold, silver, or bronze--a new state record! The next
closest districts were Polk County with 84 and then Brevard and Dade Counties with 54 each. The First Place
Page 5
winners went on to the national competitions in Chicago
this summer. Congratulations Manatee TSA!

TSA Car Show featured in The Herald
From Heather Boynton’s article in The Herald on
March 6, 2005
Towards the end of last school year almost 80 domestic, classic, and import automobiles lined up for the
Lakewood Ranch High School Technology Student
Association's car show. In addition to showcasing car
models, including 2005 Saline and Roush Mustangs, the
show also featured a sound system contest whose winner
would be determined by a decibel meter placed on the
contestants' stereos. The car show was organized by faculty member Greg McGrew and student Justin McGowan
to raise money for students to attend the Florida TSA State
Conference. All the students who worked at the car show
are members of the association hoping to go to the competition.

CTC Honored by Chamber of
Commerce
Construction Technology Careers (CTC) was
awarded the District Wide Partner distinction by the
Manatee Chamber of Commerce during its 15th Annual
Business/Education Partnership Awards Breakfast on May
27. CTC was chosen from a field of 17 category nominees,
based on its effective facilitation of career exploration
programs with multiple schools in the Manatee County
School District. The Manatee Adult, Career, and Technical Education (ACT) Department nominated CTC for the
award. This was the second award CTC has received this
year, as the Workforce Board awarded CTC the Theodore
Small Award in March.
CTC Earns National Award
The Construction Technology Careers initiative
recently received a Theodore Small Award at the National Association of Workforce Boards conference in
Washington, D.C. Four workforce boards were honored
for innovation and excellence. CTC is a unique and growing pre-apprentice program that recruits high school juniors and seniors into the construction trades. Students attend part of the day at their high school and the other part
at Manatee Technical Institute. CTC is a partnership
among 36 construction companies and trade associations,
two school boards, and the Suncoast Workforce Board.
We are very proud of CTC! CTC programs are under the
leadership of Dave Sell, MTI; Bud Elkin, Palmetto High
School; Ray Weiland, Southeast High School; and Paul
O’Neal, Manatee High School. Congratulations!
MHS Construction Technology
Students Remember Fallen Friend
The pilot ESE Construction Technology Program
at MHS was buzzing last year with news of a lost friend.
Schoolmates and friends of a young man that was killed on
a motorcycle as well as the student who owned the bike
asked construction teacher Paul O’Neal if the program
would help build a memorial to place at the site of the
accident. Most of the students in all three periods went
right to work to brainstorm on ideas. The final product will
be finished and placed at the sight. To complete the project, students drew from the various technical programs
offered at Manatee High School including those from Mr.
Orr and Mr. Fintel.
Palmetto Construction—
Construction—Business is
Booming
Palmetto High construction classes have either sold
or are under contract for picnic tables and sheds, with
gross sales at around $15,400 for the year.
In other related news, Bud Elkin is working with
Glenda Eaton to make great things happen with EMH/
TMH students. Students participate in hands-on projects,
learning the basics of construction technology. Under the
artful guidance of Seth Wilkins, a senior from Mr. Elkin’s
Construction Tech. class, the students built pencil box
holders and a scale model of a shed. They are learning the
basics about different equipment and materials needed for
construction. Several students worked with Bud’s fourth
class period building an 8’ x 8’ shed. The goal is to sell the
shed to pay for the investment in materials.
Running Heavy Equipment at
Construction Career Days
Ray Weiland’s SEHS construction class went to
South County Career Center to take part in the sixth annual
Construction Career Days. Students were given the rare
opportunity to run some heavy equipment and learn about
the roadway construction industry.
Construction Technologies Student
Awarded Scholarship
Adam Sherman, a recent graduate of Southeast High
School and student in the Construction Technologies pro-
Page 7
gram for four years was awarded the first Lloyd Williams
Scholarship for $500. He plans to pursue construction
related classes at MCC in the fall. The scholarship was
established in June 2004 by the Home Builders Association of Manatee County to assist individuals in the pursuit
of educational or vocational training in the areas of construction management, building construction, and the
building trades.
Moylan with Bruce Williams Homes, the builder sponsor
for MHS, were both on hand to support their company’s
schools. The Home Builders Association of Manatee
County partnered with the county to establish the FBA
chapters in October last year.
Future Builders of America Attends
International Builders’ Show
Saturday, May 14, the MTI and Southeast High
Chapters of Manatee’s Future Builders of America
participated in the volunteer workday at Habitat, at Manatee’s Village of the Palms site. A total of eight students and
two instructors, together with two representatives from the
Manatee HBA, worked the site from 7:30 a.m. to noon.
FBA Chapters are encouraged to participate in community
service projects, and the Habitat workday was an excellent
fit.
Manatee County had 22 students and instructors attended the International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Orlando. Four chapters attended: Manatee High School,
Palmetto High School, Southeast High School, and

how the teaching device enhances the training process for
nursing, paramedic and EMT students. The MTI stop was
the first of two school site visits during the delegation’s
United States tour. The group also visited Duke University
in Durham, North Carolina.
