The Periplus is published each month and is also
available at www.pcyc.org.

The word “Periplus” stems from Greek, meaning
‘journey’ and also means a circumnavigation
or sea voyage around a coastline. The use of a
periplus, or journal, dates back to the second
century AD and was a document listing in
order, the ports and coastal landmarks. In that
sense, the periplus was a type of log similar to
the modern day ship’s log.

Now that May is behind us, I’ll take a shot at recapping it. Laurie and I are quite pleased
that our Opening Day chores concluded down in Corona del Mar at Bahia Corinthian Yacht
Club. We’ve made many Opening Day friends over the past three years and the recurring
theme you hear from our sister clubs is that there’s nothing quite like that Pacific Corinthian
Yacht Club hospitality and camaraderie. May was jam packed with all kinds of activities
and events, a few of which I have focused on below: Cinco de Mayo Party, the VCORC
Random Leg Race, Wine Wednesday (last month only held on Thursday), Mother’s Day
Brunch at PCYC, 2nd Quarterly Meeting, Commodore’s Ball, Weekly On The Water
Programs, Weekly Yoga, Del Rey Yacht Club Memorial Weekend Cruise, the Olson 30
National Championships and Memorial Day at PCYC. At the quarterly meeting, I am pleased to report that
the Amendments to Bylaw Articles 5.6 & 5.7 affecting Intermediate & Associate Members, which had been
recommended by your Board of Directors, were approved overwhelmingly by those members in attendance. I’d
like to take this opportunity to personally thank Dottie Skidmore and her entire team as well as Dan & Patty
Wick for making this year’s Commodore’s Ball a truly memorable one for Laurie and me and hopefully for all of
you. In my book it was perfection from conception to the final curtain call, a grand slam in every aspect right
down to the tiniest detail. Also I would be negligent not to thank all the Committee Chairs and their worker bees
for their tireless dedication and contributions to the enjoyment and satisfaction of our members. In closing out
my recap of May, let us not forget all the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in order to
make this the greatest Country on earth and whom we honor each Memorial Day.
JUST A QUICK REMINDER TO LET YOU ALL KNOW THAT WE NEED YOU FOR THE NOMINATING
COMMITTEE. Please disregard PCYC’s previous official “Notice and Call” requesting that you submit your
name and application as a candidate for the 2014 Nominating Committee with respect to the application
form, qualifications and requirements. If you have any interest whatsoever in serving on this Committee,
simply call or email our Secretary, Jana Danza, at (805) 984-1041 or [email protected] to let her know.
Our incredible diverse group of exceptional leaders, thinkers, innovators and visionaries now serving on the board
and various committees along with our general manager and staff have been working tirelessly and out of the
box on ways to improve and streamline the overall operation of the Club, increase membership and improve on
the retention of existing members, without compromising the qualities that make PCYC the crown jewel of the
Channel Islands Harbor. In the very near future, we will be introducing an exciting new bar menu which will be
exclusive to Bill’s Bar only, as well as fabulous updated fine dining choices which will only be served in our Main
Dining Room. Thus we will now be able have a choice of two completely different places to dine when we come
to PCYC. How exciting!
I’m still encouraged by the number of members that are receiving the Periplus online, their monthly billing
electronically and making their payments through PCYC’s Direct Payment ACH Program simply by filling out the
Direct Debit Authorization form with the Accounting Office, but I definitely would like to see more participation.
If you really think about it, this is definitely a win win situation for all involved. The Periplus online is in color
along with better definition, you are not dependent on snail mail for either the Periplus or the monthly billing
statement, and your payment is made automatically for you. The benefits to the Club are a considerable savings in
money and time, and, of course, time is money!
Below you will find a brief outline of this month’s coming events: Wine Wednesday (June 4th), Beer Tasting & Food
Pairing (Saturday, June 7th), Capt. Dave’s Fishing Derby and Electric Boat Event & Seafood Buffet (Saturday,
June 14th), Ladies Who Do Lunch (Thursday, June 19th), PCYC Men’s Wounded Warrior Lunch (Thursday, June
26th), Captain Phil’s Island Cruise (Friday – Sunday, June 27th – the 29th).
Once again, we would like to thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers as our son, Ara, continues to wage
war against thymic carcinoma. We continue to feel totally optimistic in defeating this unwelcome culprit. Believe
me, we don’t take your support lightly and feel we are truly blessed to know each and every one of you.
In closing, I would like to thank each and every one of you for helping to make our Club, Pacific Corinthian Yacht
Club; all that it can be . . . and help carry out our 2014 theme of Let’s Party.

Lynda Radke - Vice Commodore
Vice Commodore
I want to thank everyone who came out to vote at our recent quarterly meeting. During that
meeting we approved a board recommendation to allow us to extend special dues pricing
through our intermediate and associate membership programs to prospective members up
through the age of 40. Previously, these programs ended at the age of 35. These programs
are designed to encourage our second and third generation members to join in their own
right and to encourage membership of all ages. One great provision of these programs, is
that a portion of the dues paid each year are credited towards reducing the cost of becoming
an equity member when they no longer qualify for the intermediate or associate memberships. If you have an
adult child or relative who would benefit from this program, please let us know, we would love to have them! In
fact, I recently had the privilege of meeting new members who were 2nd and third generation PCYC members
and their young daughter was a fourth generation PCYC member. I believe this is a first for us and I look
forward to welcoming more second, third and fourth generation members as new members!
We have also made an adjustment to membership, by setting a new fixed price of $1,100 for regular membership
and ending the loyalty pledge program. For existing loyalty pledge members, they may continue through the
loyalty pledge program, or at their choosing, convert to regular membership by paying the difference of $500.
Please see Brenda at the Front Desk if you are interested in converting. Currently, Loyalty Pledge members
cannot serve in an official capacity during the loyalty pledge period. We know that we have many amazing
loyalty pledge members and that this conversion offer will allow those interested to serve in an official capacity
sooner. Truly a win-win for both the member and the Club!
As your Vice Commodore, membership recruitment and retention continues to be a top priority. We have
recognized that we need to focus on having more
events that appeal to our younger members, while
continuing to hold the traditional events that are

popular with existing members. Our beautiful facility

can easily accommodate both types of events and as
you see announcements for different types of events we

hope you will come out and support us. One thing we

are working on is to make our pool a center of activity

this summer. This includes having more activities

poolside, having the staff be more attentive to those
seated by the pool and we are also exploring bringing

swimming lessons back to PCYC.
On the house committee front we have been working
diligently on the repair of the tile on the upstairs deck,
considering ways to elevate the dining experience and
working on other projects to keep the Club beautiful.
Again, thank you to all our members and I look
forward to a great summer at PCYC!

Brenda Dickmann - General Manager
In General
Summer is officially here and the PCYC Pool and Spa are open and heated. We keep the pool
at a very comfortable temperature for your swimming pleasure.
We are currently hoping to start our Junior Program and be able to offer different age
categories of swim lessons, we will keep you posted! We are also going to host some great
children’s pool parties; again we will keep you posted!
Now that summer is in full swing and the kids are out of school, I’d like to re-post and re-visit some of the
summer safety rules of the pool. Swimming is the most popular summer activity, let’s all strive to make this a
safe summer pool season. As a note of precaution, located behind the spa is a life preserver with a rope as well as
a shepherds crook.
Above all else enjoy the beautiful harbor views, the wonderful pool and spa amenities and remember you may
order food poolside. Have a great, safe and fun summer!

Phil Peck - Fleet Captain Power
Hello PCYC,
We have had two wonderful cruises to our neighboring Santa Barbara and Del Rey harbors. We are going to change it up for June. We will be going to Santa Cruz Island and Coches
Prietas anchorage June 27-29, or longer if you prefer. As usual, the anchorage will be "weather
permitting". I will update through the Front Desk if there are any changes. We have chosen
this anchorage because of its fantastic beach, its proximity to nice fishing grounds around
Santa Cruz, and the opportunities to explore the Painted Cave and Santa Rosa Island if you're
feeling extra adventurous and have a full tank of fuel!!
For this cruise, all you really need is a smile, a sense of adventure and a willingness to wake up in quiet
paradise. I am also bringing a kayak, paddleboards, and fishing rods and reels, but that is just me! In order to go ashore you will need to contact the National Park Service, or follow this link, http://www.nps.
gov/chis/planyourvisit/feesandreservations.htm, to obtain information and permits.
Adrienne and I look forward to a new style of cruising with all of you. Save the Date

Last month’s Cinco de Mayo party was a great success. I must congratulate Maricela Santana
and her committee for all their hard work. It sure makes my job look easy. The entertainment
was great with a pretty opening song sung acapella by Maricela and then followed up a little
later with a duet with S/C Graham Wilson. It’s really great to have such talent right in our own
back yard.
All you ladies don’t forget Ladies Who Do Lunch this month on the 19th. Your hostesses will
be Sheryl Hawkins and Karen Lorenzen. The theme will be “Bangles and Bags” so dig through
your closets and come up with some good donations.
I attended the Safe Boating Expo, on May 10th, at the Channel Islands Coast Guard Station. There was quite a
community turn out. The PCYF had a booth in a great location, right inside the gate, which was manned by the
Gaddis family. We all should thank Henry Goldman and his crew for all the hard work in putting something like
this together.
In closing, I would like to thank each member for helping make these social events such a success.
Employees of the Month
Brenda Dickmann - General Manager
This month I would like to recognize the entire PCYC Staff for all the hard work and dedication to their jobs. We
have been working hard to motivate and encourage good work ethics and participation in all the work events
and activities. We have had numerous private events, at times two to three in a day and the staff has pulled
together to make these events happen and run effortlessly and seamlessly.
This month was very difficult TO PICK JUST ONE INDIVIDUAL!
The enthusiasm that each team leader shows to their staff has been inspiring and as a collective team the entire
staff of PCYC has shown great growth and dedication to the members as well as their entire PCYC staff family.
Personally I would like to thank each and every staff employee for a job well done.

Coastal Knowledge WEATHER:
I do not ever remember having strong Santa Ana Wind Storms in May. I also don’t remember having 99 degree
temperature in the same month. Strange as it may seem the water temperature remains cold during this time. I
think it may have been due to the strong surface winds rolling the cold water from the deeper water columns. My
thoughts lean towards a possible hot summer and the water should warm up bringing us many Catalina Eddy
events. The Catalina Eddy’s are fairly strong circular winds which bring us similar weather fronts one would
encounter during a winter Southeasternly storm, except instead of being cold and wet, it will be misty and warm
with winds usually 12 to 20 knots and a 2 to 3 foot wind chop. This will affect boaters heading to Catalina Island
and all the Channel Islands anchorages facing South. Listen to the weather forecast and try to boat after the event
is over or at least on the last day when winds are subsiding. Be aware, remain cautious and listen to the weather
forecast closely for more Northeast wind events. I have spoken to a number of boaters who have been caught
offshore who have not anticipated there would be such high winds and seas this late in the spring.
FISHING:
I have been doing most of my fishing activity up the coast from Ventura Marina where I keep my boat. I have
been exploring old fishing grounds where I fished when I had my charter boats in the late 70’s and 80’s. While
not catching many fish, I have enjoyed going to the areas looking at the underwater structures and the kelp beds.
I’ve found that most of the rocky reefs have fish on them. I have also spent a good amount of time looking at
the sandy bottom areas hoping to get a fresh idea of where to fish halibut this summer. At the time of this note,
people are starting to catch White Seabass. Most are being caught on live squid close to the spawning squid areas.
Find the commercial light boats and you will find the squid and White Seabass close by. A fairly simple fishery.
Also available most days at Dave’s Fuel Dock in Ventura Harbor is good cured live bait. Cured bait is bait that
has been in the bait pens and allowed to settle and recoup from the trauma when netted by the bait boat and the
transfer process to the bait dock. Generally they are fed by the bait docks attendants until sold. Using cured, live
anchovies to fish all species will increase your catch as much as 100%. Cured bait also stays alive for multiple
days on board. Call Sue at 805-644-6776 for availability. Also ask for her fuel prices.
Our fishing derbies are off to a slow to start due to scheduling conflicts anglers have and the slow spring fishing
has been less than exciting. Hopefully this will change with the warming of the local waters. Mark your calendar
for the June 14th Kids Sand Dab Derby. We had a great kids derby in 2013 and I know the kids would love to do
it again. For more information on how to fish with your boat, including deck equipment needed, call me at 805218-8004 or e-mail me at [email protected].
YACHTS:
The yacht market remains strong with sales matching the years before the recession. Prices have stabilized;
however, unfortunately they are low. Hopefully as inventory shrinks and demand stays, high prices will move
up for lack of new boats being produced. My feelings are that if you decide to sell your boat, list it 10 to 20% up
from sold boats in the past year and see how the market responds for 30 to 60 days then adjust while there are
still a few months of boat buying season left.

Sandy Morse - Fleet Nurse
Fleet Nurse
First Aid Class a big success!
Being on the water means we must be prepared for all kinds of emergencies, not only for our
own personal safety but for our passengers, and other boaters as well. To meet this challenge
and be prepared, sixteen responsible PCYC members attended the First Aid for Boaters Class
on April 26. Everyone agreed it was an informative and imperative class for anyone who is
going to be out on the water.
Our instructor, paramedic Mike Stillwagon, had us chuckling as he recounted his first and last boating
experience, which was marred by seasickness. But between the laughter, we all knew that it’s not very funny
when someone is suffering, and seasickness was just one of the many subjects that were covered.
We learned what a boater’s first aid kit should contain, what to do for the three most common boating injuries
(bleeding, head injuries, and hypothermia) and also how to deal with burns, cuts, bites and stings. We are now so
much better informed and have the confidence to deal with not only injuries that may occur at sea, but those on
land as well.
Side note: I’m sorry to say this will be my last article as your Fleet Nurse, for Arizona will become my new home
