What a great foster family: Bruce (now adopted), Maya,
Sasha, Ginger, Roxie (now adopted), Frankie and Brooklyn
(left to right) (Michelle not pictured)
Welcome Michelle, Frankie and Maya as our new foster family!!! This dynamic trio has quickly taken on
rescue dogs as their new hobby. Mom Michelle (age??) signed on as a foster for the three puppies Foxie,
Roxie and Bruce. (Sue trained them to use a litter box which made adoption so much easier!) Michelle
quickly learned the NMAF routine and is now doing home visits, screening and contracts! Frankie (13) is
bonding with Ginger and supervised G's recovery from a cut requiring stitches. Maya (9) is learning that
placing fosters means a new puppy face in the household. All have been great at Saturday clinics helping
keep our 4 legged ones watered and walked! Sasha and Brooklyn help the new ones adapt to a busy
family. What a great family!!!
The three puppies, Foxie, Roxie and Bruce were adopted! Thanks to Victoria, Susan, Michelle, Frankie
and Maya who operated a team to transition them from being castaways to members of new families!
Max went thru eye surgery to repair his cherry eye. And neuter and chip and shots! But what a trooper!
He did well thru it all and looks good. He kept up his wonderful demeanor the entire time! Thanks to TLC,
Norma and Gloria!
Cat Mews
Lefty and Pedro
Kyra and Keesha
Brothers Lefty & Pedro are coming to town, and Vicki is their handler. Please come to see how cute they
are at our Saturday Cat Adoption Clinic from 11 to 4 at PetSmart/Academy!
Help! One of our foster moms is ill, and her two foster cats, Kyra & Keesha, must find a temporary lodgings
through the holidays, for about six weeks. Please call Jeri at 350-7463 if you think you might be able foster
one or both of these gorgeous and lovable lap cats. They are sweet and friendly, playful, and litter box
purr-fect!
SCC News
Toby, a beautiful, healthy, 5 year old cat was rescued by
Jayne at NMAF Street Cat Companions when his owner
took him to her vet to have him euthanized. The owner
was moving and didn't want to take him along.
As feral cats are brought to NMAF/Street Cat Companions
thrashing, hissing and growling, Toby has earned his keep
by comforting them and reassuring them that they're in a
safe place. Toby has comforted hundreds of feral cats
during his stay at SCC. In his "free time" Toby dreams of
the day he finds a home of his own.......only this time it
must be FOREVER. You can meet and adopt Toby by
calling Jayne at 505-681-4713.
The TNR (trap, neuter and return) program has grown from about 2000 surgeries a year to over 5000.
Operating at this number for almost 3 years now, most of the cats pass through the HUB and are cared for
by volunteers. The result of these free-roaming cats getting fixed has been a drop in the intake of both cats
and kittens at the shelter. In 2008, over 12,000 cats were brought to the shelter. That number has now
been reduced to less that half! Falling well below 6,000! The result has been better handling and outcome
for the cats that do end up at the shelter. Before, 8,000 cats were being euthanized in one year. That
number has now dropped to approximately 600, most with severe, untreatable health issues.
As the relationship between the city shelter and the TNR program with NMAF has grown, feral cats are no
longer euthanized except for severe health reasons.
Donation/Garage Sale
Utility trailer donated to NMAF by Pat and Patricia from Los
Lunas NM. (No picture of the auto available.)
Pat and Patricia donated to NMAF a utility trailer. This heavy duty vehicle will be great to transport items
from the public, set ups for adoption events and items for sale at our garage sales. Gloria picked it up and
is storing it. Thanks to the Pats and Gloria!!
An anonymous donor donated a (BMW?) car (2001?) to NMAF for us to sell last summer. The car was
located in Utah. A big thanks to Jim for flying out and driving it back home to Albuquerque. Thanks to Sally
who spent many months researching the best way to price and sell and get the most bucks out of the
donation and to make sure the title was handled correctly. Currently the car is with a broker awaiting a
transaction. Stay tuned for final results.
NMAF needs donations like these! And for its garage sales. Every donation, big and small, helps. The
office has information on making bequests and wills. Gift cards from Petsmart are always appreciated!
Storage for items and locations for sales are needed. Cash donations help with office, phone line, supplies
and pet food. Extra cat food always needed for NMAF/SCC.
Misc
Albuquerque Magazine listed NMAF as one of the top 5 places to adopt an animal! Page 125 has a little
blurb.......The written NMAFnewsletter is at the printers and you should be receiving it any day now so
watch your mailbox. A HUGE thanks to Jeri for coordinating this monumental effort!......Annual meeting will
be Feb 22nd, a Sunday afternoon. Mark your calendar! Ideas for guest speaker needed......
Thanks
to everyone for the great year! All of our fosters, all of our board members, all our donators are
what makes it possible!!
