Dear :West Ender;
Enclosed is my subscription. I am
an old West Ender and all of my family has expired and I am the last of
the eight of us. We were the Cohen
family, they were Ira, Harry, Rita,
Joe-Joe, Tootsie, Phyllis and Richie.
My brother Richie passed away last
year and my sister Rita passed away
June 16th, 04. 1 am 85 and so far
doing great. I'm still frien4ly with
Irene Hughes Smith and Mollie
Bomstein Pearlman. My sister-inlaw Mae Wiseman Cohen was married to my brother Richie, she still
lives in wes! Palm Beach, FL.
· When you first started the paper

I was born on Myrtle Street, Dec.
26, 1918. My maiden name was
France Cohen. I'm sure there are a
lot of people out there that remem-·

Singles Dances, as nearly 500
singles and couples dance the night
away at Moseley's on the Charles
in Dedham, MA. Dances are also
held at the Hillview Country Club
in North Reading, and the American Legion Hall in Bedford. Admission to all dances is $8 which
includes a free buffet, door prizes

In answer to my Beacon Hill
neighbors. I reread the letters from
Janet Goldberg and Murry
Breaslouf.
Janet, I too went to the Sharp
School. Came from the Peter
Faneuil to the Sharp back to e Peter Faneuil and then on to the
Wendell Phillips School. 1939 was
the last year the Wendell Phillips
was a public school.
Later on it became an army barracks with soldiers coming up from
Camp Edwards.
Also, Janet, all the people you
mention-! knew them all.
Marjorie Grossblatt was my next
door neighbor. Remember also
when Charlie Abrams was court-
ing her and he was going to Northeastern. (What a memoryMarjorie's father was a jeweler
who used to walk to South Station
to go to Worcester-! believe 6
days a week.)
Murray, your letter was great!
Again, I remember all those names
you mentioned except for oneyou didn't mention Billy Tobin.
Anna Adams babysat for me (don't
forget, I'm a little younger than
you). The Adams family lived
above us on Myrtle St.

I got this great letter from a former

Dear "Cityscapes":
Have you ever published a picure
of the last building to be torn down
in Boston's West End?
Here name was - "The
Charlesbank Homes" and she lived
on the cornerof337 Charles St. and
112 Poplar St.
She stood 6 stories tall - (in her
stocking feet) and a roof that looked
straight into heaven!
The building itself was built of
red brick- she had hallway stairs and
landings of cement - with black iron
handrails.
She was built around a large
square courtyard. Kind of like a fort.
She had been built to last- she didn't!
I remember seeking her picture
in the paper and an article that said
"it took longer to take her down than
the rest of the West End buildings combined."
I was so proud of her!!
I love it when you publish pictures of Boston - of course I prefer
the "before" pictures!
I do not have a computer to try
and find a picture of my building perhaps there is one in your archives.
Any help you can give me in my

celebrate the 58 th Anniversary of
our graduation at the Continental
Restaurant in Saugus on September 18, but I won't be able to attend that, either. I believe that

1923. She was their last surviving

Alexander (Wa,lish), Sophie, Jennie
and Michael Jr. They lived at 46
Billerica St. then at 107 Leveritt St.
Helen lived at 36 Auburn St. until
September 1954, when she moved
to Tewksbury. She is survived by
her three children: William (Billy)
who graduated from St. Joseph's in
1954 and is currently a professor
at the University of Nebraska at
Omaha; Patricia who retired last .
year as head administrator at the .
County Court in Lowell, and
Michael who founded and ran the
TransAero trucking company operating out of Ringe, NH. She has,
at last count, 20 grand- and greatgrand children.

Fleitman grew
up in the West End and graduated
from Boston English High School
in 1951 . He later served in the
Coast Guard from 1951 to 1954.
Mr. Fleitmanjoined Local12 in
1958 and served on the executive
board and conference board and as
benefit trustee and bu.siness agent
prior to his election to the business
manager and s~cretary-treasurer
position in 1994.
He was active in organized labor, serving as vice president of the
Massachusetts AFL-CIO, executive ·board member of the Massachusetts State Building and Construction Trades Council and as a
member of the International Foun- ·
dation of Employee Benefit Plans.
He was also a member of the West
End House of Boston.
He is survived by his wife,
Vivian (Getz) ; two daughters,
Sheryl and Beth, .both of Norwood;
and one sister, Sylvia Srebnick of
Malden.

Good food, good music and good ·
friends made a great time at the Hilltop
Steakhouse.
Our ·fundraiser last October was a
complete success thanks to the people from
the West End. We exceeded our
expectations and filled the hall with over
100 guests.
The spirit of friendship was quite
evident particularly for those who had not
seen each other for quite awhi,le.
The service . was -exceptional. and the
· waitstaff was efficient and courteous. Our
tables were set neatly With centerpieces that
exemplified the fall season.
We on the West End Committee can
hardly thank you folks enough for your
support with this function.

The pictures are of Peggy Adelson Saslow and myself,
Joyce Spector Mekelburg. This is a friendship that has lasted
a lifetime-going back to the days when our parents lived
near one another on the hill. We would run up and down the ·
steps of the Vilna Shul where both sets of parents prayed,
and it continued through our formative high school years. It
continued even when our middle years saw my family sti~l
living in the Boston area and Peggy's in New Jersey and it

It has been some time since I've received The We~t Ender.

I recently attended the 50th reunion of my graduatiOn from
Girls' High School in 1954. We talked about some of the West
Enders who had graduated with us and others who did not and
we
wondering where they are now. Some of the names
were: Gloria Esposito, Frances Ruma, Palma Papa, Joy

Here is a little something for the
subscription to The West Ender. I
lived on 54 Norman St. with the
Petruzzelli' s, Ficuciello's, Saia's,
Bora's and the Re Family. My
mother was Rose, my father was
called Spud and I had two brothers,
George and Anthony.
I was heart broken when I heard
that Ralph (Fitzy) Fitzpatrick
passed away.
It's hard to believe that it was
50 years ago when we hung out at
Klaman's Spa, and we are 50 years
older now. Boy, how time flies. I
really miss the old gang who hung
out there and I will really miss
Dave Tibbetts and Fitzy. They
were the funniest guys on the
comer. Just ask Armando.
On the lighter side, I went to
school with Paul Joltki and he was
the terror of the Peter Fanueil
School. Hal Hal
You probably do not remember
me. Keep the paper coming. You
are doing a great job. Miss you all.

51st Wedding Anniversary
called me to
me that Ninnie Limone had passed
away. The world is a lesser place
because it will never see the likes of
him again. He was in every sense of
the word a true gentleman. His
extaordinary gift was his great sense
of humor. If he wasn't busy doing
someone favor, he was busy driving some one crazy with his marvelous sense of humor.
·It didn't matter who you were or
what position you occupied in life.
One of his favorite targets was his
brother Joe (who was like an uncle
to me). Joe was meticulous about
everything. His car could never be
dirty or untidy. One day Ninnie was
riding in Joe's car, chewing on a ratty
cigar, "Joe," he said," You sure keep
this car clean". Joe was about to answer when Ninnie spit on the shiny
dashboard just for a joke.
I don't want anybody to get the
impression that all Ninnie did was
spit tobacco juice at people. I would
like to have a dollar for every favor
he did for people. He was everybody's friend. I don't know any
one that didn't like Ninnie.

Miss Lyons 6th Grade - Winchell School

Enclosed with my renewal is a
picture of some of us from the class
of 1951. Miss Lyons was our 6th
grade teacher at the Wmchell school.
We then went on to the "Blackie"
and graduated in 1954.
My grandparents, parents, aunts,
uncles and cousins all grew up in the
West End.
I don't know anyone else today
who had family all around them like
I did. My only friend now with the
past is my childhood friend Marie
Cambria (she wentto St. Joe's). Our
parents grew up together and we are
as close today as we were way back
in our childhood days. It's nice when
we sit and reminisce about the old
West End. One thing leads to another
and as Marie says ''we could write a
book"

Talk about your West End memories. Today I did something that I
promised myself that I would do a
long time ago. I picked up the_phone
and called Yoyo. We reminisced and
threw names around like Frank
Privetera, Sonny Rao, Peter Limone,
and Phil and Chubby Oddo. Yoyo
used to sell produce in front of the
old registry building on Nashua St.
He was the unofficial mayor of
Nashua St. and had more pull than
most of the Boston politicians. He
was Phil's mentor and idol. Brother
Phil always said that if he ever grew
up, he wanted to be just like Yoyo.
There was a time when Phil,
Chubby and even my Aunt Celia
lived in the same building as Yoyo
and family. That's when Phil was
dishing out heartburn and other gastrointestinal surprises at the North
Station Diner.I don'tknow if any of
you remember that Phil made his
movie debut there when the late Robert Mitchum used his diner for a location shot when he made the movie
"Friends Of Eddie Coil". No! Robert Mitchum never ate there. That's
why he lived so long.
After that, Phil bought Rosie
Bergers Bar, which was later renamed "Magoos" It was nothing to
drive down Lomasney way (Lowell
St.) and see Phil basting a pig on a
rotating spit right on the sidewalk.
If anyone pulled up and asked who
the roast pig was for, Phil would say,
"It's for you. Come back about 9
o'clock tonight and we'll cut it up.
Everyone who is around will get
some".
The man that really earned the
title of Mr. West End House, Hi
Escot is turning 90. God love him.
Watch out for him! He's still got it, I
saw him hit Stanley Freedman a shot
in the thigh. You know, one of those
"Iron Donut" jobs. Stanley was in
pain for months. Many is the time
Phil, Stanley and the gang at the West
End House camp would serenade Hi
with a hymn to him. The words and
music escape me for now but if you
really want to know, ask one of the
guys and I'm sure that they will be
glad to sing it for you.
Stay well all you princes and princesses of the old West End! I love
you all!

. permanent fixture at Bob Feeney's
on Cambridge Street. Then came
Rita, Joe Joe, Tootsie (Annette),
Phyllis, myself and last but not least
our baby brother Richie, who is living in West Palm Beach, florida. So
you see we go way back, real old
West Enders. We first went to the
Sharp School, then the Bowdoin
School (up the hill) then the boys
went to the Peter Faneuil and we
went to the Wells Blackstone and
Washington and finally Girl's High.
Our father was a cigar maker and
at one time he had a store in front of
the Bowdoin Square Theatre and he
used to make cigars in the window
and needless to say he would draw
quite a crowd at times.
Joe-Joe was well known for his
gambling and he also drove a cab and
was a fighter and went under the name
of Bobby Allen. Many a gold watch
he brought home and I think my father used to hock them. My kid
brother also had pigeons on the roof
of our house, at that time we owned
the house on the comer of Parkman
and No. Anderson. I don't believe
many people had screens and the pigeons had a ball for themselves in and
- out of windows.
No one seemed to mention Kitty
Fallon, who by the way expired
within the last year. She sure was a
legend and I don't think there were
too many West Enders that didn't
know her. Also the barber shop on
the comer of Blossom and Cambridge streets. The owner was Joe
the Barber. His last name was
DeLaurentis, who by the way married our mother after our father died
and inherited 8 kids, none of his own.
I can remember when the lower part
of the hills was called the valley of
Beacon Hill. When we moved from
Myrtle street, my mother found an
apartment at 17 Allen Street. We
lived on the top floor (some climb).
· At that time I was such a skinny kid,
I don't know if too many West
Enders will remember this, but I was
sent to a nutrition class. I believe it

enjoyed the last few editions, as
there were many photos of people
I remember well.
Shirley (Santsky) Sheinfeld
was $3.00 a week. There was a little
house in between the Blackstone and
Wells ~chools. We would get our
lunch and then had to take a nap before we were sent back to the school
for the afternoon session. I also remember taking dancing lessons from
Blanche Levinson on Allen Street
and when she sold the house the
Chesters bought it. That's when
Angie Chester was the girlfriend of
Frank Reynolds and was part of our
group. I believe that's why the
Cohens were mentioned in the poem
'The Wmdow." Most of my friends
were from the St. Joseph School and
church and many times I would attend mass with them. In fact most of
us Coheris married Catholics and our
children were Baptized at the St.
Joseph's. Also some of the names to
be remembered were Barney Sheff's
deli on Spring Street and also the
Sheff family owned a fish and vegetable store on the comer of Allen
and Spring. I can remember my
mother sending us down there for 2
cents worth of soup greens and you
got a bag of vegetables to make a
large pot of soup. Also remember the
Hughes family on Poplar Street,
Irene was one of my best friends and
still is, she had a brother Paul that
many will remem~r. There was an
alley that went the length of the two
streets, Poplar and Allen, it was our
short cut to visit each other. Then
there was the Wiseman family, which
incidentally my younger brother
Richie married one of them, Mae.
How about Lazur, Ubbie Baker and
also the Kaplans and the Leone's on
No. Anderson Street. Andy owns the
BigS at Wellington in Medford. Also
the Victors, I can't forget them, I
lived in their apartment house on
Parkman Street and then moved to
No. Russell Street, which they also

time. I graduated form the Washington School in 1933, which I still have
the graduation picture with over 300
West Enders in it. It's a treasure. I
married Tony Paone on Dec. of 1937
so we are nearing our 50th anniver-

anyone remember the singer Betty
Brooks? She lived in our apt house
on the comer of Spring and Allen.
Then we moved to Allen and Blossom, the Rabb's owned the building
- the same that owns all the Stop and
Shops. And there was a grocery store
underneath, I believe it was owned
by the Waxmans. Also on Allen street
was the Shermans and the Gropmans, Doody (David) and Lee. A
very good friend of mine also was
Molly Bomstein, her father was the
one that took pictures outside the
public gardens. I'm sure many will
remember him. I remember playing
a game with Molly,' snapping nuts
into the grates of the sewers and the
one that got most in center, won the
game.
There are other names that pop
into mind, like Billy English, a pretty
fresh kid, but turned out to be a police officer in Needham. Been married for years to a girl named Olga,
that also lived on Allen Street. Also
the Elms family, I believe has all
passed away except Rose, the only
girl in the family. My husband Tony
was also a West Ender. His.Jamily
owned 29 No. Anderson Stree't'He
graduated from Roxbury Memorial~
School in 1932. There were many
from the West End that went to that
High School. Some of his friends
were the O'Hara's and then there
were the Cuddy's and Antoinette and
Andy Ross.
I could go on and on, it brings
back so many memories. I'm not trying to correct anyone but the
Klaymen's deli was on No. Russell
Street and also Charlie Macaroni,
and not far from them lived the
Escots, a well known qame.
Lot of luck and hopefully I can
receive the missing copies, and also
future copies.

Dear West Ender,
I wouldlike a subscription to The
West Ender newspaper. In the 30's,
40's & 50's my mother (maiden
name of Geracci) would visit my
grandmother in the West End every
week. I remember making this trip
wi!}l her. At the age of72 it's nice to
read the.paper and reminisce.

lived on Wall St. My dad was
Frank Bramante. He had a grocery
