April 1st to April 10th 2016
The 8th Bath Comedy Festival runs from April 1st
to April 10th 2016 and is becoming an essential
part of Bath’s cultural landscape as well as
steadily gaining a national reputation for quality
and innovation. Over 100 events are in the full
programme, taking place at many venues across
the city.
Bath Comedy Festival Director Nick Steel said
“I can’t wait for everyone to see this year’s
amazing line-up. With its hand-picked mixture of
famous names and newcomers, Bath Comedy
Festival 2016 will undoubtedly be the best ever!’’
This year’s programme promises to be even
bigger and more wide ranging than before,
including as it does everything from avant
garde stand-up to family friendly comedy
shows, the now famous New Act Competition,
the outrageous Wine Arts Trail mystery tour,
international comedians, music, magic and
sketch comedy.
"
Confirmed headline acts include Dead Ringers
and Impressions Show star Jess Robinson with
Kirsty Newton, Radio 4 favourites Hardeep Singh
Kohli and Arthur Smith, Steve Frost’s Improv All
Stars and Patrick Monahan. Peter Richardson
will be in town showing his new Comic Strip film
at the Little Theatre Cinema and The Wine Arts
Trail is back, bigger boozier and more bonkers
than ever!
There will be touring shows and Edinburgh
previews at the Ring O Bells from the likes of
Stuart Goldsmith, Tom Neenan, Diane Spencer,
Matt Green, Lewis Schaffer, Tamar Broadbent,
Seymour Mace, Spencer Jones and The
Travelling Sisters.
The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre are
back by popular demand and a truly international
element this year brings Norwegian comedian
Dag Sørås to Bath fresh from supporting Doug
Stanhope, as well as German Paco Erhard.
I can’t wait for everyone to see this year’s

mixture of famous names and newcomers,
Bath Comedy Festival 2016 will undoubtedly
be the best ever!

Once more the Festival will utilise new and
unusual stages, whether it be the back room of a
pub, the exciting new Widcombe Social Club or
the streets of Bath, as well as more established
venues. There will also be a burgeoning paywhat-you-feel ‘Free’ Festival running alongside
the ticketed events at Bath Brew House.
Comedy Festival regulars will remember
American comedian Taylor Glenn on stage
heavily pregnant at opening night three years
ago. She returns to tell the tale of a Billion
Days of Parenthood this year. At the Social
Club, Anna Morris bring her loveable bridezilla
creation Georgina for a wedding rehearsal, and

As usual the Rondo Theatre presents a week of
comedy, this year including circuit favourite John
Robins and the bizarre musical partnership of
John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett. The Mission
Theatre is also brought to the fore this year with
both its Theatre Upstairs space and main house,
which boasts a five day run of “Murder She Didn’t
Write”. There’s a comedic music night at Moles
nightclub, two comedy walks around the city and
elsewhere around town expect to find a variety
of different shows at The St James Wine Vaults,
The Bell, the YMCA and even a Bath resident’s
front room!
The Kids’ Comedy Fest is back, in partnership
with Fezziwigs Fun Club and will be held every
weekday at Widcombe Social Club – look out for
some exciting additions this year!
The Festival also continues its F-Rating of the
whole event, with more female performers than
ever, including at least one per day and on
every bill, plus female comperes in the New Act
Competition.
There will be a special “In Conversation With” a
team from Sarah Millican’s magazine Standard
Issue who’ll be talking comedy, women, feminism
and more with Lucy Porter and guests.
Bath Brew House is host to pay-as-you-feel
“free” festival fayre and welcomes shows from
the likes of Joz Norris, Neil McFarlane, Sam
Carrington, Zahra Barri and James Dowdeswell
with his search for the perfect pub, as well
as hosting a couple of Saturday nuight bills
headlined by Sean Hughes and Mark Dolan.
Opening night kicks off on 1st April with an April
Fools’ Stand-up Showcase at Widcombe Social
Club hosted by Silky and featuring recent New
Act of the Year winners from Leicester Square
and Hackney Empire competitions LJ Da Funk
and Bilal Zafar, as well as Bethan Roberts who

the city of Bath.
J ess R obinson
Making a good impression
Hi J ess, many thanks for taking time out
from your busy sc hedule to sp eak to us. You
are p erforming at this years Bath Comedy
Festival, whic h you are no stranger to. What
makes you keep c oming bac k to the festival?
Hello - no problem! I think this will be my third
time at the comedy festival. What keeps me
coming back? Bath does. I ADOR E the city;
it' s architecture, its shops, it' s afternoon teas!! I
worked at the Theatre R oyal a couple of times
when I was on tour. I' ll make any excuse to visit.
Plus the audiences are never anything less than
warm and laughy, which I love.
Can you teac h someone to do an
imp ression?
Definitely. ou may have witnessed me teaching
a poor unsuspecting audience member to do a
pretty good Liza Minelli last year. It' s best to start
with a caricature of someone, really exaggerating
their voice qualities and mannerisms. They you
can tone it down... if you remember... which
sometimes I don' t!
What c an we exp ec t from this years show?
More vocal gymnastics and lots of laughs;
musical mash-ups, a magical musical hair
machine, stand up and silliness. You might also
catch a bit of tap dancing if you' re lucky PLUS
The Wheels of Sixty-Four Tunes are back as is
my lovely pal and musical maestro extraordinaire
- Kirsty Newton. The opening number alone
has 50 vocal impressions in it which don' t get
repeated again during the show.
Your imp ressions are brilliant, my p ersonal
favourite of yours is Cheryl Cole ( when I hear
it, I c an' t believe its not her) . Are you allowed
a favourite and is there an imp ression that
you j ust c an' t get right?
Why, thank you very much ou re definitely
allowed favourite impressions ( they' re not like
children I love doing Cheryl Cole - I find her
quite easy and I love the reaction I get. I think
one of my favourite singing impressions is Billie
Holiday. She has such a distinctive, classic voice.
As for the ones I struggle with - Nina Simone. I
j ust can not get her tone. And men. I can not do
men. Watching me try is funny though.
How long does it take to p erfec t your
imp ressions?
For full listings and details on how to book tickets
please go to the website www.bathc omedy.c om
Bush straight away and Julie Andrews didn' t take
too long. Shirley Bassey was harder work. I don' t
think I really got her right for a year. Now she' s
one of my best.
It really depends on the subj ect and how long
I' m prepared to persevere - ( one of my worst
personality traits is not liking something if I can' t
do it straight away) . Some voices capture my
imagination and come really easily. I got Kate

Away from c omedy, you were exc ellent in
' Little V oic e' , c an we see you bac k on stage
soon?
Thank you very much. I really loved that role
and it was amazing to be picked to play it by Jim
Cartwright himself. I don' t have any plans to go
back on stage in the next year, well - apart from
developing my new live show for the Edinburgh
Festival which I hope you' ll see at next year' s
Bath Comedy Festival ( if I' m invited back) .
I s music al theatre a welc ome break from
c omedy, and if so, do you p refer one to the
other?
No, not particularly. I really like doing my own
thing. What IS a welcome break though is not
having any responsibility for production, ticket
sales, PR and all the other admin and anxiety
that comes from putting on your own show. It is
lovely to turn up, do a j ob, get paid and go home.
And I do enj oy working in a large team of people
and making new friends.
What does the rest of 2 0 1 6 have in store for
you?
I' ll be developing my new show for The
Edinburgh Festival, Kirsty and I are playing
Glastonbury Festival which will be amazing, I
have various gigs around the country and I think
there s a short film in the pipe line too. Other
than that, I' m busy voicing a couple of american
cartoons which I absolutely love.
