Students from the High School come
to Clayton Avenue on a daily basis to
support students academically. High
school students can be seen reading
with students, practicing letter sounds,
word sounds, or supporting them in
any area they may need assistance.
These students have a tremendous
impact on the success of students at

mentary Education course. The purpose of this
course is to provide the interested student with
an opportunity to investigate closely the teaching profession as a possible career.
It is a pleasure having these students at Clayton
Avenue to help our students. They are helping
change the academic futures of young learners.
We look forward to many more successful
years with this wonderful partnership.

CAPTO Food Drive
Students at Clayton Avenue have been
bringing in food to fill food baskets for
the holiday. This CAPTO Food Drive
has each grade level responsible for
certain items for the baskets. This is
another wonderful activity to support
the initiative of students “Looking
Beyond Themselves.” Students have
been excited to drop off their items
each morning when they come into
school. The boxes are filling up with
only a few more days left to bring in
items. Thank you for supporting the
CAPTO Food Drive.

Kelso the Frog has been working hard at Clayton Avenue Elementary teaching firstthrough fifth-grade students how to resolve conflicts by using his problem-solving skills.
Kelso is not the only one working hard at teaching the kids problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. He has enlisted his special friend DUSO the Dolphin to help out with our Kindergarten classes. Duso the Dolphin and his underwater problem-solving friends have been visiting each Kindergarten class to teach students the importance of being respectful, fair,
responsible and caring individuals. The students are having lots of fun listening to Duso tell
stories on feelings, sharing, making friends and even, when we make mistakes, how to learn
from them. Stayed tuned for more ways students are Doing the Right Thing at Clayton Avenue!
This month’s School Counselor bulletin board listed ways in which students could handle their anger or frustration. Some of those techniques are counting to 10, taking deep breaths,
talking to an adult or even taking a walk. Students are reminded that it’s ok to feel angry or
frustrated; they just need to learn how to handle their frustration/anger in positive ways.
Lastly, I want to wish everyone and their families a Happy Holiday and New Year!
It has been an absolute pleasure working with all of the students, faculty and staff here at
Clayton Avenue.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Tina Hall
School Counselor

We are finishing up on our collection of non-perishable goods here at Clayton Avenue.
CAPTO, parents and CAE staff have done a wonderful job with helping provide our
own families with some food for over the holidays. Thank you to all who have contributed to help make this possible. Not only do our families help out, but we have some
merchants locally, and also CAPTO, assisting in the completion of our supply of food.
I am thankful to be part of such a loving and caring community.
Recently I have received many donated clothing items to have on hand in the Health
Office. Thank you to all who donated these slightly used items. Gently used socks,
shirts and pants are put to good use by students who need a change of clothing during
the day at school. Should you have a child who borrowed something, please wash it
and return the item. If you are in need of that article of clothing, please feel free to
keep it. We are happy to share what we have here in the Health Office, and our supply
is replenished frequently by many giving people.
Have a safe and happy holiday season,
Mrs. Forsberg
CAPTO NEWS
December 2013
Welcome to the Holiday Season! CAPTO has been a flurry of activity lately, and we thank
all of our volunteers who have helped with our events. We could not do it without you!
This month CAPTO is sponsoring a Common Core presentation given by Superintendent
Mark LaRoach and Director of Instruction Dr. Laura Lamash on Tuesday, December 10, at
6 p.m. in the CAE Auditorium. This presentation is an effort to help clarify concerns of the
new requirements. We look forward to seeing you there!
Holiday Night Out will be held on Thursday, December 12, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Children are invited to come make holiday crafts, watch the “Polar Express,” enjoy some
popcorn and have a chance to shop at the Holiday Shoppe for small gifts. This event is
FREE for CAE in UPK through fifth grade. Registration is required by December 5 to
make sure we have enough volunteers to chaperone the event.
The Holiday Food Drive is running December 2 – December 13. This voluntary donation program will directly help CAE families who are in need for the holiday season. Volunteers have been busy wrapping boxes, sorting food and collecting donations. Monetary
donations (cash or check-made payable to CAPTO) will also be accepted.
We have completed our fall Spirit Wear sale. We hope everyone is enjoying their new merchandise. Thank you for your orders. We will be having a sale in the spring time with different items. Please watch for the new flyer!
Upcoming Events in January:
Bingo Night! The much anticipated fun-filled Bingo Night will return on January 30 from
6 - 7:30 p.m. Watch for more details!
HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!
Mrs. Braman’s and Mrs. Lilley’s first-grade classes have been
busy “looking beyond themselves” this month. After reading
“The Mitten Tree” by Candace Christiansen, the students were
inspired to bring in new mittens, hats, and gloves for the mitten
trees in their classrooms. Over a two-week period of time, they
collected over 50 different items! They will now donate these
items to Glove House, an organization that helps children in our
community. Mrs. Braman and Mrs. Lilley would like to thank the
generous families who are setting such a good example for their
children in “looking beyond themselves.”
