A Word from J.J.
An autotrader advert …... an unusually beautiful looking car…… what the hell is it and
why have I suddenly lost interest in the Cavalier Gsi 2000 that I was looking for? Such
was my introduction to the FTO in early
1998. A visit to a trader working from home
instilled terror as I test drove the car, resolved
that nothing would stop me from buying it,
and then realised that I couldn’t because it
was foreign import and I knew absolutely
nothing about it. I bottled out - it was a further 3 months before I looked at an FTO
again and this time nothing stopped me.
The most common affliction of the new FTO
driver is of course the grin that begins to
spread across the face when foot hits floor
and engine growls. I still suffer from it now,
and despite the warnings of Mitsubishi garages, mechanics, salesmen, and my wife,
I still have absolutely no regrets about buying the car. The FTO club, which I originally
started selfishly as a desperate search for
other owners and their experiences, is flourishing thanks to the major efforts of the committee, past and present. Amongst other
things it acts as a safety net to help FTO
owners in trouble, with the addition of the
new FTO Club list on the Internet as the latest aid and information point to club members. Please use and support your club as
much as possible. It needs you as much as
you need it.

Freebies with this Issue
The long awaited Tax Disc holders
OK, I have been promising these for what seems like a
year (most probably more). Well, as I’m typing, the order
is with the manufacturers, so fingers crossed they have
them done in the time quoted and delivered with this issue, but just in case I have arranged for some goodies to
be won in the magazine and the pull out tuning/styling
catalogue ‘Gizmo’s ‘n’ Stuff’.

The car itself is more common now, but with
that comes better access to parts, and a
general acceptance that a grey import car
need not be something that will cause you
to fall out with your bank manager, family
members and generally lose your mind with
worry.
As FTO owners I think you all need to be
congratulated for having the courage to buy
such a car, generally against the run of advice, and to have played a large part in making grey imports more acceptable in the UK.
Safe and happy motoring
Gizmo’s ‘n’ Stuff
Gizmo’s ‘n’ Stuff is a small section of tuning
and styling products which are available for
the FTO, some of the items are imported
from Japan, etc whereas others are developed and manufactured in the UK. It also
features some other FTO related products,
like the toy cars etc. Most of the suppliers/
contacts listed do other tuning and styling
products for the FTO, so get in touch and
have a chat. Lastly if you know of any other
new products/items/suppliers contact me at
[email protected] so they can be contacted
for more info.

The Voices Made Me Do It
Words: Dawn Woodward
Photos: Steve Hemming
It had been sometime since I last saw Riki
and I’d heard rumors that he’d been rash
with his cash! There was to be a mini meet
held at Binfield near Reading so we arranged
to see if it was true!. As usual we arrived
too early and ended up waiting on a freezing Sunday in the empty pub car park. There
was the usual Mivec growl and a red dart
blipped into the car park. We headed off to
a suitable location for photo’s and a chat.
The thing I noticed straight away was he had
been lucky enough to source a second-hand
Veilside front bumper from a guy here in the
UK. He had also replaced the standard rear
spoiler with that from a GPvR and he added
his own touch, where the GPvR spoiler has
Version R written on the side he had
changed it to Version Riki, I think this just
about sums this FTO up.
Riki was not satisfied with the standard GPX
wheels and changed them for a set of 17’s
BK Racing, then not completely satisfied
with those he sold them and settled on a set
of 17’s Khan RSS clad in Toyo finest Proxes
T1-S rubber. The other thing that really
grabs your attention is the front brake conversion, he has upgraded his brakes to
330mm cross drilled and grooved disc’s that
have an anodized blue mounting bell, with
6 pot callipers. At the moment the rear
brakes are standard but he has plans to put
the EBC cross drilled and grooved on when
the centre’s have been anodized blue.
The interior of the car is as striking as the
exterior. The seats have been re-upholstered in black leather with red alcantara
insets. The black and red theme doesn’t
stop there the door panels have been retrimmed in the same vein. Wanting to finish
the cabin off the original steering wheel had
to go as well, he changed it for a Momo
Commando. Being a sensible sort of guy
he added a SatNav System / DVD player.
After a short demo I asked him if he used
the SatNav much, he replied “all the time. I
drove round France not long ago and never
took a map”, being a shiny gadget kinda girl
I’ve added this to my wish list.
What else could Riki have done to this car?
A quick look in the boot revealed a small
red canister, A Nitrous Oxide Kit. A look
under the bonnet revealed to two small solenoids mounted near to the bulk head. Riki
explained how it worked “The Nitrous is injected into the engine ice cold; the heat of
the engine splits the nitrous into 2 parts ni-
P A G E
4
trogen and 1 part pure oxygen. With an increase in fuel this aids combustion and adds
more power in a way similar to Super Charging or a Turbo”.
Since fitting the Nitrous he had upgraded
the jets from 25 bhp to 100 bhp and had an
onboard computer fitted so that he could
control the settings himself. To avoid additional stress on the gearbox and engine, the
nitrous is added over a time period, a 40%
burst is used with a 5 second delay, before
a burst of 100%. The on board computer
has 10 programmes so that the Nitrous burst
can be chosen for its application e.g. Santa
Pod. (The 25 bhp - 50 bhp jets do not require the computer but with the 75 bhp - 100
bhp jets it is advisable.)
With the cold really beginning to set in and
the photo shoot all done we decided to join
the others at the pub. Just as Riki was about
to leave I asked him if he could take Steve
along for a ride and show him the N2O in
action. By the time I’d turned my car around
Riki was out of sight. On arrival back at the
pub I asked Steve how it was. He said “At
the first give way sign, I though Riki was
never going to brake, when he did, the car
stopped on a penny incredible. When we
Owner
approached the hump back bridge Riki slapped his foot down and I
thought we were going to take off, I had visions of him grounding and
taking his Veilside front with it but, fortunately we didn’t, impressive!”
When I asked Riki why the mod’s he said “The voices made me do it”

The Alton Towers Meet
FTO People Meet of the year
28th October 2001
Most out of character, I arrived late at the
meeting point...and what a surprise I had
when Stu, Patt and I rolled up. After getting the tickets and sending them out, it
just never occurred to me just how many
FTO’s may be in attendance!
Sixteen FTO’s and one Honda Integra R
all crammed into the bulging community
centre car-park at Alton….wicked!
view to having a group photo took on it…
Well we managed it and here’s the proof!
Adrenaline junkies are: (back row) Mark
Nash, Stewart Mutch, Donna, DC’s partner,
Darren Cooksey, Rob Upham, Louise, Dave
Hughes. (front row) Patt Torr, Kym, Julie, Me,
Kevin Cheung, Noel Brennan, Marcus and
Lee Hemming.
What a bunch of nutters, eh?
until the final water geyser managed to soak
myself as it did a number of other passengers, notably Joe Patane.
On ‘The Log Flume’, a favourite of favourites and with the odd out of season mild day
we were enjoying after the freezing start, this
turned out to be not too wet for most. (Well
except Patt of course!). A few photos were
bought after this ride and this has got to be
one of the best….showing Noel, Marcus,
Mark, Rob and Joe.
Quality shot chaps!
So after a quick chat and strategy talks
with Stu and Patt to keep the convoy together, we set off. Just 2 miles up the
road and we were in, all lined up together
in the car park.
So a drying period was
called for and what better than the tumble-dry
effect of Nemesis. It
was about our ticket
time so we trekked
back over that way and
within 30 minutes we
were all either on or
queuing that extra bit
for the front seats. See
the next photograph for
some familiar FTO
owners being speed
dried
A little tyre kicking, introductions (as a few
newbies had made it to this event) and
donning of warm clothing followed before
the gang made it’s way into the park. Isn’t
it typical eh? You try and get all the FTO’s
together and someone parks a Honda Integra R in amongst them!
Entrance to the park is via a mono-rail,
which Patt thought was superb!
I gathered as many people together inside the gates and we arranged a time to
meet back up for the firework display on
the evening.
I also asked if people would mind making up a full carriage on Oblivion with a
Photos: Martin While
The same gang then descended upon Nemesis but the queue was very long, so we all
acquired virtual tickets which gave us time
to eat and take in a couple of water rides,
these being ‘The Rapids’ and then ‘The Log
Flume’. All was well on our water chariot
P A G E
6
Great fun and if you ever go on it, try the
front….it’s the biz!
Suitably impressed people then had the
need for food and drink, so the gang descended on the McDonalds and tried out the
Patt enjoying the Mono Rail !
The main event.... Tea Cups !
‘spend loads and try and get a toy with the
ineffective claw things’ nearby. A couple of
us won, much to our surprise. Meanwhile
Messrs Hughes and Brennan found a bar!
And ambled over sporting a couple of very
fetching pints of lager…just the sort of thing
you want when you are planning on getting
swung around in all directions!
Once refreshed a few decided to try out the
main event, the most amazing, scary ride in
the park….The Tea Cups! Honestly this ride
was wicked and a few felt the effects of it I
can tell you. See for yourself…..oh dear Mr
Nash :)
We all trekked over to Ug Land to try out the
hanging swings and Submission as the dark
drew in. With the darkness came the hour
for the fireworks. So we all quickly made
our way over to the entrance to bring the
Infamous Log flume Photo

whole gang back together. Finding a suitable viewing area we all watched the fireworks, which Marcus, being an authority on
these sort of things, said where very good.
So that was the FTO Alton Towers Fireworks
Meet….FTO’s, people, rides, fun, food and
fireworks. This was more a meet for the people rather than the cars, and what a great
bunch turned up. Good to see some new
faces and hope you make it to more events
in the future. Final thanks to Stewart Mutch
for checking out the meeting point and generally helping out during the weekend.
Thanks, Martin

FTO Xmas Bash 2001
Photos: Martin While
Fresh air and a crisp clear morning was what
greeted Stewart Mutch and myself when we
turned up at the car park of the Matlock Bath
railway station. And within 10 minutes we
could hear the distinctive noise of the FTO
V6 as 3 other FTO’s arrived.
and eventually there were 10 in attendance.
Introductions over and much head scratching over the sight of the 19” shod FTO…
A very nice 4-course meal was enjoyed by
all, together with crackers, party hats, silly
string snappers and loads of beer!
After introductions, we all set off convoy style
over The Dales to the Blacksmiths Arms in
Henbury, about a 30-mile drive. This was
the venue for the mini-meet and also the
place we had arranged to meet up with Dave
Wilson, this being his last FTO meet with
his Imperial Pearl Red, Hiro-winged, track
monster of an FTO.
Rain had started by now and together with
the Sunday drivers that were adorning the
roads on this fine Saturday; the convoy was
a very sedate affair. Labelled as ‘The Wacky
Races’, it was more like ‘The Smooth
Cruise’. Some great roads between Matlock
and the pub, if ever you are over that way!
After a short while a few more FTO’s arrived
to tell over a quick drink before we were all
ushered into the main function room and
shown to our tables….
So by the time everyone had finished their
coffee and the tables were cleared, we were
ready to rock the party…and with Patt, Sam
and Stu to name a few on our side, the other
groups in the room did not know what had
hit them J Check out these pictures of the
evening…there were more but we had to
censor some of them! What a great night, if
a bit emotional!!! Loads of hugs, tears and
FTO camaraderie.
Into the pub for drinks and banter whilst we
waited for Dave to arrive. After about an
hour he did, together with Clare and we all
ate a hearty meal. Most of us then set off
back to Matlock, whilst others made their
way home. Some just wanted to convoy,
some had to get to
the hotel to get
ready for the
evening meal.
So after an enjoyable morning and
an afternoon siesta, we all started
to get ready and all
29
attendees
made it to the bar
in the hotel for
1900hrs. Lots of
hugs, kisses, tales

for wear and Dave Wilson’s FTO had been
decked out with hearts and ‘Please don’t sell
me’ on it! A few made it over to Stu &
Donna’s, for coffee and some 3 way i-linked
PS2 action on Gran Turismo 3 (well recommended), before all set off their separate
ways.
Thanks to all for making this one of the best
‘FTO People’ events I have attended. Special thanks to Stu & Donna for putting up
with Joolz & I, to Patt for being the life and
soul of the party and to Sam for being Sam
;) And finally Dave Wilson for being such a
good mate and helping me and a lot of other
FTO owners during his FTO ownership (he
sold his FTO hours after the convoy!)… a
true FTO enthusiast and dear friend.

GOODWOOD
Z Club Anniversary
Photos: Lee Hollyer
The Owners Club attended the Datsun Z/
ZX Nissan Clubs 25th Anniversary celebration held at Goodwood racing circuit near
Chichester. This was a Japanese car track
event by invitation only with track time
booked in advance through the Z Club. 18
FTO Owners jumped at the chance of driving the historic circuit.
The day would be an early start and a long
drive for Mel and I. Still jet lagged from a
12-hour flight from our winter holiday we
headed out on the A2 towards the south
coast. The weather was cool and misty as
we approached Goodwood, but it had been
a lovely drive on clear roads. I had to miss
the convoy meeting point in order to rush a
membership list to the main gates of Goodwood so that all FTO drivers would be allowed in, since the event was strictly for Club
Members.
When I arrived at the gates Panic suddenly
set in…….. I expecting to see rows of
Nissans and other Japanese cars / Balloons
/ Noise…….. but I struggled to find another
car or person ! – Had I got the right day ? Is
this the right place ? The place was DEAD
with no one to give the membership list to !?
I decided to just drive straight into the paddock area and finally I was relived to see a
friendly wave from a Nissan ZX owner there was life at Goodwood !! I was obviously just a bit early. I quickly grabbed a
section of Paddock for the FTO club as cars
had started to stream in and the atmosphere
was beginning to build. The FTO convoy finally arrived and was an impressive sight
indeed, I think we can safely say we put
other car clubs to shame with our turn out.
We all attended a race briefing /sign in session where rules of overtaking and track discipline were explained in a very friendly manner, the feeling was they wanted us to enjoy
the day but respect each other on-track.
Goodwood has an excellent top floor spec-

tator’s area alongside the Pitlane allowing a
nice view of track action. Ian Mould took
the plunge early eager to make the most of
his all day pass and put in a few blistering
laps before a rather abrupt halt when he discovered a damp section of track approaching the final chicane and made contact with
the tyre wall – the FTO camp went silent as
we waited for him to return to the pits, now
displaying his white and blue War Stripes –
luckily it was only minor damage – still a few
now felt a little more cautious.
Word from Dave Hughes was that the
Datsun Z’s were fast – although many of
them having ‘unusual’ engines hidden under the bonnet. The FTOs where also
putting in good lap times –the best a touch
under 1.43 and certainly nothing else
sounded as good as the Mitsubishi V6 on
the main straight. After lunch break it was
time to put my GS through its paces, so I
joined the queue with Mark Nash. With a lot
of cars now eager to get on track we reckoned on a good hours wait,
although it seemed every time we got to the spectators area we had
to dash back to our cars to move them up a bit. Finally we reached
the dreaded decibel test. This is set down by the local council –a
static noise level of 105 db at ¾ revs is the limit - Mark Nash and I
both have the same Tube Torque twin exit exhaust with Cat Bypass,
although serving different engines. Our exhausts seemed twice as
loud as usual during the test and I held my breath waiting for the
results – I suddenly had a nasty feeling we would not get
through……….. but it was okay, I think we were about 98db.
Finally out on track, Marks promise to take it easy on the first lap and
stay behind me lasted just past the first corner when he shot past with
a ZX Turbo on his rear bumper. I settled for a battle with Red Datsun
260 ZX– we were matched on the straights but he was braver on the
corners. I should trust the FTO more as I’m sure my brake and suspension upgrades would have easily let me past him on the corners.
I’m still a bit cautious with my baby and with my wife watching from the
pits I didn’t want to end up on the back of a tow truck ;-). I did not know
the track well at all and it had some strange cambers and bumps, but
it was still very exhilarating and I wished I’d bought more time – awesome fun.
The afternoon got very busy, but most people got a few more runs in.
Highlights were a Crazy Audi TT with a Honda Rear mounted engine
and the day nicely rounded off with a great battle between Rob Upham
and Ian Mould who had bravely carried on through the day – Great
Stuff. I’ll keep an eye out for more events this year at Goodwood as
hopefully this will be the start of a few more South Track Days. Thanks
to everyone that attended and many thanks to the Z Club for an excellent day.
I wonder how an FTO would handle at Brands Hatch ?

AUTOSPORT
International 2002
Photos: Martin While / Steve Hemming
First of all I’ve got to say, ‘Smartgroups, could
you pick a more convenient time to go looloo in future please!’
‘Why?’ you may ask. Well, this was the first
rally/meet that I’ve ever had the pleasure of
organising and to me, a rally ain’t over until
you’ve had the opportunity to dissect it with
everyone else via what is normally a very
reliable medium. Two weeks down the road
and poor old SG is still in the throes of righting itself so in my book, this rally is still ongoing people.
Back to business. After a leisurely eight ball
convoy up from Cherwell Valley services, the
old nerves started jangling instantly as I was
confronted with a monstrous array of FTO’s
at our meeting point, The Clock Inn. 30 of
the clubs finest, some in the car park but
most could be seen overspilling down the
lane. Lot’s of drooling and dribbling (sorry,
tyre kicking) ensued as convoy time crept
closer. Then it was time to splutter out the
script for the ride to the NEC, check radios
with my merry trio of convoy helpers and off
we went.
Couldn’t believe all 30 cars made it to the
carpark all together – that is some achievement believe me. Big thanks to my convoy
helpers Martin While, Stu Mutch and Dave
Hughes (remember that name?) who also
provided me with invaluable assistance in
route planning this.
Word of advice though, don’t bother spending 3 hours washing, waxing and vaccing
their car the day before a winter rally! Believe me, with the NEC’s car parks it just ain’t
worth it!!!
So, hard bit over and time to sample the
delights of Autosports. Sports machines in
both 2 and 4 (I didn’t see any Del boy motors) wheel varieties for kids of all ages and
tastes were there although pride of place
must go to the grid style line up of last seasons Formula One participants.
Parts, kits and bits were also available on
the trade stalls for those who wished to treat
their cars to a little special something or two.
Mix all that lot in with the odd pole dancer, a
smattering here and there of scantily clad
hostesses plus one exceptionally daring
thong arrangement and you come up with a
brilliant recipe for a day out.
As late afternoon approached it was time to
say goodbye to Autosports for another year
and head to The Boat Inn in the leafy triple
barrelled village of Catherine De Barnes. 18
FTO’s pulled into the ample car park, where
a few last snaps were shot off before the
light gave out on us and it was into the
boozer for a long overdue pint of shandy and
some top, top scram chappies.
A fitting end to the day, so there really ain’t
much more to say other than hope you all
enjoyed and if I’ve missed anything, I’m sure
I’ll find out about it when SG comes back,
God I missed it.

The story behind Calendar Cover Photo
For those that are not aware the F15 Eagle
is the $48 million dollar pride of the US Air
force, with the squadron based at RAF
Lakenheath in Suffolk being the only home
to the F15 currently in Europe.
The F15 is very distinctive from
it’s twin tails, to it’s flowing lines,
near perfect aerodynamic shape
which oozes both aggressiveness
and agility. The F15 was going to
be the perfect companion for my
most challenging photo shoot to
date.
too much for these guys. The aircraft up
close is truly awesome, made even more
special to the fact that the wing commander
himself had taken time out to let us use his
The day took months to arrange
with a very disappointing last minute
cancellation previously; but patience
paid off and the day finally arrived
to meet the machine. RAF
Lakenheath has a press office that
is very aware of the value of good
PR and this was going to be an opportunity for them to show off their
own pride and joy.
On arrival both Noel Brennan and
myself handed our FTO’s over to the
USAF to drive to the flight line. Once there
we were then given both full co-operation
and free rain over where and how we positions the cars by the aircraft, nothing was
“ride” and it was hard to concentrate on the photography while being
excited as a school kid.
An hour later and 5 rolls of 35mm and the
day was all to quickly over. Both aircraft and
car had been photographed from every conceivable angle, the USAF even gave me an
air platform to raise myself some 12 feet into
the air to get the calendar shot (which is titled, the ballerina and the
street fighter). The guys
from RAF Lakenheath were
truly fantastic hosts and it
was such a pleasure to have
the photograph on the front
cover this just finished the
whole experience off.. All this
came from an e-mail to the
public relations offer and an
idea that was conceived on a
very wet track day at Binbrook
some 1 year earlier.
My heart felt thanks to the men
and
women
of
RAF
Lakenheath, without them the
day would not have been either
possible or anywhere near as
enjoyable. You can see the full
range of photographs from this
day at http://www.ex-s.net selecting F15 from the menu.

Santa Pod IV ‘The Return’ - 7th April 2002
With last September’s Santa Pod basically rained off, we shall try again on April 7th. A
convoy will be leaving the Southbound car park of Rothersthorpe Services on the M1
near Jcn15A at 9.15 am. Previous convoys have seen over thirty FTO's making jaws
drop left, right and center, try and be there for this one. The theme for the day will once
again be Mivec's (GPX, GPvR) versus Nivec's (GS, GR, GX) in two classes, tiptronic and
manual cars. Please come along and join in or support your team. The prize for the
fastest tiptronic and manual cars is a £50 Co-ordsport Voucher in each class, with a £50
Camskill voucher for the fastest reaction time. Valid timing slips must be handed to me
by 3.30pm for an awards ceremony at 3.40pm. Any timing slips handed in after this will
not count in the competition. Supercharged, turbocharged or Nitrous powered cars are
unfortunately not allowed to enter the fastest ¼ mile time competition, but are welcome

FTO Mini F.A.Q.
What’s that flashing light ?
A yellow light showing intermittently on the top right hand side of the
instrument cluster is simply reminding you to fill up your windscreen washer
reservoir. The reservoir can be found under the bonnet just behind the
nearside headlight. Fill it with clean water and add a splash of windscreen-washer additive. Don’t use washing-up liquid as this congeals and eventually
blocks your motors and nozzles.

Can I change my Mitsubishi Head Unit ?
Yes, and if you don’t want to chop your wires up you can buy an adapter
from Autoleads, part number PC2-46-4. These can be picked up in any
good car hi-fi centre.
If you have a large (double DIN sized head unit) you will most probably
need to fit a ‘cubby hole’ slot to fill in the gap left by a smaller head
unit. These can be purchased as an accessory from Co-Ordsport
(MB898861 for the standard type at approx. £12).
Are there any Locking Wheel Nuts available ?
The security wheel nuts from a Shogun fit the standard FTO alloys and are Mitsubishi
part number SP029173. The use of “TriLocks” are not recommended.

What Tyres?
With experience from other owners and Camskill
Pirelli P7000 - Excellent dry grip, good wet grip. Good
driver feedback and control.
Toyo T1-S - Great wet grip, reasonable dry grip. Mileage
good. Great sidewall protection.
Bridgestone S02 - A heavy tyre but a fantastic all-rounder.
But expensive.
Goodyear Eagle F1 - Tend to feather easily at edges. Be
careful of non-”E” marked grey imports. Good wet and dry
performance. Mileage good. Good to drive and good control. Tend to aquaplane
more easily when compared to other tyres in the wet.
Avon ZZ1 – Good looking tyre. Excellent mileage at expense of poorer wet grip.
The new “Green Line” tyre is a good one to look out for.
Speaker Removal
Front : The front door speakers can be removed as follows; gently prise the bottom
and right sides of the grille out towards you. Once it is loose grab it with your fingers
and wiggle it out - it is held in place by clips and so will come out fairly easily. Once the
grille is removed you will clearly see the speaker and the screws that hold it in place.
Once you take out the screws out and disconnect the wiring connector the speaker will
come out. The speakers are 6" (15cm) diameter.
