years of forward thinking - El Paso Community Foundation
Report to the Community YEARS OF FORWARD THINKING $146,295 Million Back Into the Community Since 1977 For Good. For El Paso. Forever. COMMUNITY FOUNDATION NATIONAL STANDARDS BOARD (Our version of the Good Housekeeping seal) The National Standards are philanthropy’s most rigorous standards, developed in the spirit of accountability, transparency, and continuous self-improvement. The El Paso Community Foundation is among more than 700 community foundations in the United States. We are a member of the Council of Foundations and are confirmed to be in compliance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations. Community foundations provide a simple, powerful, and highly personal approach to giving. As a public charity devoted to our community, we offer a variety of giving tools to help you achieve your charitable goals. The National Standards Board guides the sound policies and practices that help community foundations achieve results and impact. It is our version of the Good Housekeeping seal and distinguishes us as a smart investment for philanthropists. For Good. For El Paso. Forever. Mission Statement: To establish permanent charitable funds To provide a vehicle for donors’ varied interests To promote local philanthropy To provide leadership and resources in addressing local challenges and opportunities Intended as a blueprint for internal organizational development and as a tangible set of benchmarks for external assessment of performance, the 41 National Standards address six key areas of community foundation operations: YEARS OF FORWARD THINKING • Mission, structure, and governance • Resource development • Stewardship and accountability • Grant-making and community leadership • Donor relations • Communications In the words of Vikki Spruill, the current President of the Council on Foundations, “Each of us knows where a grant has made a difference, a donation jump-started an initiative, or a contribution catalyzed a movement.” This is where the El Paso Community Foundation’s efforts to improve our region come to fruition. As it was, there were very few opportunities for philanthropy in El Paso for El Paso. They asked some of our most beloved citizens for their support, and now – after a few decades – the Foundation has grown into a vehicle for real leadership in this community. It has provided more than $146 million to build our region in the arts, education, environment, history, and so much more. Leigh V. Bloss Chairman of the Board Eric Pearson President The El Paso Community Foundation has weathered a few years that were economically hard on everyone, and maintained its grant making to hundreds of charitable organizations in the area. In 2011 and 2012, the Foundation has built a huge economic driver in the Plaza Classic Film Festival, begun the process of building affordable housing in the heart of downtown El Paso, addressed hunger and nutrition with traditional and innovative programs, and provided directly to teachers in classrooms across the region. The El Paso Community Foundation represents different things to different people. Our donors’ interests are as diverse as their beliefs. The thing they share – and that the Community Foundation will honor forever – is an interest in making El Paso a better place to live. We are collectively heading toward a threshold of greatness; it begins and ends with people who are willing to march forward, arm in arm, putting aside minute differences for a greater goal. The El Paso Community Foundation strives to build partnerships that add value to our region, and for the next 35 years, we will continue to do the quality work we have always done: For Good. For El Paso. Forever. Williams Senior Program Officer Dreams are coming true. An El Paso Community Foundation Great Lady of Philanthropy, Betty Moor MacGuire said over 26 years ago, “Oh no! They can’t tear down my theatre.” Many El Pasoans felt that the Plaza Theatre was their theatre and rallied along with the El Paso Community Foundation to not only save the theatre, but fully restore and increase the size of the stage. The Plaza Theatre can now welcome top-tier Broadway shows and has made a bold statement worldwide. This year, it was ranked #31 by Pollstar as one of the world’s top performing venues. We also invited Al Pacino to town (and he kindly accepted) to help us launch the Plaza Endowment Fund which will protect the Plaza Theatre forever. MILLS PLAZA CENTENNIAL LEADERSHIP The El Paso Community Foundation celebrated the Mills Plaza Centennial with our friends and partners, Paul Foster and Alejandra De la Vega Foster. Paul Foster’s dream of restoring what is now called Mills Plaza Properties is also being realized. On August 3, 2012, the El Paso Community Foundation, along with Paul and Alejandra, held a much anticipated public open house for the Centennial Celebration of the buildings at the corner of Mills and Oregon Streets downtown; The Centre Building, The Mills Building and the St. Regis Building. The El Paso Community Foundation knows how to find long-term, sustainable solutions by working collaboratively with our community partners to ensure that all stakeholders can benefit. Our Board consists of seasoned experts who can step into a situation and fill a void in the region we call home. Some of the El Paso Community Foundation projects include: On August 4, 2012, Academy Award® winner Al Pacino helped celebrate the event by performing a show in the Plaza Theatre, and kicked off the Plaza Theatre Endowment Fund. Downtown El Paso was full of wonder and excitement during that great weekend. Al Pacino later said he could feel the love in the Theatre. The Classroom Fund The Classroom Fund was created in 2011 in response to a conversation with a Jefferson High School science teacher. He wanted to buy anatomy desk models for his students but needed some help. The fund supports innovation, program enhancement, and supplies for the classroom. We were able to give grants to 174 teachers in 2012. The fund provides requested materials and delivers them directly to teachers in El Paso County, Texas, and Las Cruces, New Mexico – private or public schools – based on the need and the idea. The purpose of the fund is to directly support the efforts of teachers, who, on a limited salary, often buy basic supplies and “extras” for their classrooms at their own cost. Countless notes from teachers and heartwarming hand-written, art filled ‘thank you letters’ from students have been flowing into our offices since this project began. www.theclassroomfund.org Border Art Residency The Border Art Residency enables artists to pursue their craft without the worry of immediate sales or an outside job to pay for housing expenses. Artists selected for the program are able to achieve a greater degree of personal growth by concentrating on individual goals. They also share progress with local students, educators, and the public. The Residency sits on an orchard and sculpture garden in La Union, New Mexico, a former cotton gin re-worked to provide living and studio space. LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIPS First Steps to Reading For 35 years, area students have been given opportunities to succeed through the generosity of fund donors. This year, the El Paso Community Foundation has invested $238,553 in scholarships to students from the El Paso region. Continued First Steps to Reading aims to improve literacy rates in the El Paso community through ongoing, targeted interventions aimed at children and their parents. Through this program, El Paso and Juárez born children receive high-quality, beautifully illustrated hardback books before ever leaving the hospital. Parents are trained to set aside time to read to their babies in order to establish healthy reading habits for the future, especially during those critical years 0-3. Plaza Classic Film Festival Now entering its 6th year, The Plaza Classic Film Festival celebrates our rich cinema history perfectly exemplified by the historic and newly restored, Plaza Theatre. The Plaza Theatre, in downtown El Paso, Texas, was built during the Great Depression (at a cost of $1 million) and opened on September 12, 1930. Built in the “atmospheric” architectural style (in which you feel you are sitting outdoors in the courtyard of a Spanish hacienda), the Plaza Theatre was the grandest of the region’s movie palaces. ArtSpace El Paso Artists need places to live, work, and display their art. The El Paso Community Foundation, the City of El Paso, and ArtSpace Inc., are building a five-story, 50-70 unit living/studio/gallery space at the location of the old El Paso Saddleblanket Company on Oregon Street. The building site was given to the El Paso Community Foundation by CIC Limited/Chris Cummings. We conducted a public charette to gather ideas. A community is made of people and this future visionary area will breathe fresh life with fellow artists and downtown enthusiasts. Nelly Garcia Gallinar and Jose Luis Gallinar Scholarship Fund Carlos Gallinar established this scholarship fund in honor of his parents who taught him the value of an education. This scholarship encourages students to pursue a college degree. It doesn’t matter if you finish 1st in your class or 337th (which was Carlos’s ranking). Higher education provides opportunities even if you did not rank in the top tier in high school. Recipient should be a student from Bel Air selected from the bottom tier of the graduating class. The first choice should be the student ranked 337th in the class. Ruth E. Gillett Scholarship Fund Ruth Gillett taught the first day Andress High School opened its doors, and everyday thereafter for 39 years. “The most important job in the school system is teaching,” she said. The El Paso Community Foundation receives phone calls from past students wanting to connect with her and thank her for being such a fun and caring teacher. Recipient should be a student from Andress High School; have GPA or equivalent of 90, and be involved in extracurricular and community activities. SCHOLARSHIPS GRANTS Joseph B. Karam Scholarship Fund Everyone needs a little help sometimes. The El Paso Community Foundation believes that helping out non-profits is a great investment in our beloved community. The Foundation makes grants to tiny start-up organizations that have innovative ideas that make a difference, large organizations that have specific local impact, and many others in between. Continued Laura Karam started this fund as a legacy to her late husband Joe Karam. Joe went to the same diner every morning to have coffee and befriended the waiter that served him each day. When Joe realized the waiter wanted to go to college but simply could not afford to, Joe gave him a check every month to help out with college expenses. This year that same waiter will graduate from The University of Texas at El Paso with an electrical engineering degree. The scholarship seeks out young people who have plans to study at El Paso Community College or UTEP or a combination of the two. The First National Bank Scholarship for the Children of El Paso County/Fort Bliss Soldiers Killed in Action The First National Bank Board of Directors established this Fund. A significant donation soon followed by truck driver, Ken Krueger, retired Sergeant First Class. Ken said, “To me it’s a blessing to be able to give the money and help those who won’t have their mom or dad to give them a hug.” The scholarship awards children of military service people who either resided in El Paso County, Texas, or were stationed at Fort Bliss and killed in action on or after January 1, 2003. Creative Kids The mission of Creative Kids, Inc. is to empower youth through the arts. Through a generous grant from the El Paso Community Foundation, and its affiliate foundations, Creative Kids is able to promote healing and wellness to pediatric oncology patients through engagement in the arts with Project AIM (Arts in Motion). Part of this curriculum teaches kids how to make movie posters that are proudly displayed at the El Paso Community Foundation’s Plaza Classic Film Festival each August. Learning visual arts helps de-institutionalize the hospital setting and provides a humanistic and creative surrounding that relieves stress and anxiety. The El Paso Humane Society The El Paso Community Foundation has helped provide lifesaving vaccinations and veterinary tests for nearly 600 dogs and cats brought to the Humane Society. Each animal receives age appropriate vaccinations as recommended by the Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell University. GRANTS Continued Fit to Grow The Burkitt Foundation, which is an affiliated foundation of the El Paso Community Foundation, gave a grant designed to meet hunger and nutrition needs in El Paso County. One of the projects developed is the Youth Community Garden at Ascarate Park. This collaboration with the County of El Paso and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service resulted in 16 raised vegetable beds, teaching ‘farm to table’ skills to kids and adults. Our funding also assists in creating curricula to teach people at the Job Corps center the experience of growing their own food and serving a community. Reynolds House Through a generous grant from the El Paso Community Foundation and its affiliated foundations, the Reynolds House has been able to provide shelter, security, and basic services to more than 500 women and 1500 children, sheltering them from abusive family situations or other crises which have forced them out of their own homes. The two-story farmhouse, built in 1926 was owned by Dr. and Mrs. William Reynolds. Their daughter, Virginia Tullius, set it up as a shelter in 1990. Family members continue to operate the home. 2011 GRANTS TOTALING OVER $4,843,258.00 GRANT GUIDELINES Grant seekers can go to our website at www.epcf.org to view the Foundation’s guidelines and to submit an application. Human Services $560,834.31 Health and Disabilities $827,518.77 Education $1,967,945.54 Arts and Humanities $155,237.24 Civic Affairs/Public Benefit $1,040,446.96 Environment/ Animals $291,275.18 The areas of interest of the El Paso Community Foundation are: Arts and Humanities, Civic Affairs/Public Benefit, Environmental/Animals, Education, Health and Disabilities, and Human Services. Because the Community Foundation is a collection of many separate funds established by individuals, families, nonprofit organizations and companies, the grants given suit a variety of philanthropic interests and giving styles. Grants will generally not be made for annual campaigns, dinners or special events, ongoing general support, individuals, capital campaigns for new buildings, or travel. Grant requests will be considered only from agencies located within or offering services to the citizens of our community, which includes far west Texas, southern New Mexico, and northern Chihuahua, Mexico. U.S. applicants must be exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue code, or the equivalent in Mexico. The Board of the El Paso Community Foundation reviews requests and selects recipient organizations in May and November of each year. Deadlines for receipt of requests are February 1 and August 1. Dance/performance education INTERNATIONAL WORK BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER Mision con Vision Orphanage in Juárez, Mexico The Foundation Room Sometimes, we take for granted that life’s most basic needs will simply be met. That is not always the case and the reason the El Paso Community Foundation helps support 36 kids in the Mision con Vision Orphanage in Juárez, Mexico. Food, clothing, shoes, and the opportunity to go to school along with school supplies is something every child should have access to. Most importantly these children have a place in a comfortable home. A great community consists of people who have a mindset of improving life not only for themselves but for the greater good. When these minds are able to convene, great ideas can turn into real improvements in our lives. Cuenca Los Ojos, AC The El Paso Community Foundation is working with La Rodadora project located in northern Sonora, Mexico. It helps to preserve and restore the biodiversity of the borderland region between the US and Mexico through land protection, habitat restoration and wildlife reintroduction. The Foundation seeks to support these programs through scientific research and sustainable resources management techniques. When we moved into our new location at 333 N. Oregon Street in the Mills Plaza, we wanted to make sure we had an open and friendly space for community groups to meet; a place for non-profit and civic groups. The 5,000 square foot space can also be used as a venue for private events like weddings, galas, and corporate meetings or parties. It has a full-service kitchen and bar that lends itself to a variety of possibilities. The first event held in the Foundation Room was a conversation with Stephen Humphrey Bogart, the famed actor’s son, during the Plaza Classic Film Festival in August of 2011. Since then, we have hosted Hollywood stars such as Al Pacino. We also host local community leaders making decisions to improve our fair city. We’ve facilitated public meetings regarding a number of issues including non-partisan candidate debates. We continue to hold educational seminars and corporate meetings with state-of-the-art audio/visual technology. The Foundation Room is also home to weekly meetings of the Rotary Club of El Paso. The room’s cornerstone is an enormous terracotta frieze built in 1916 for downtown El Paso’s old Ellanay Theatre which was torn down in 1986 to make way for the Camino Real tower. The frieze, which is a beautiful piece of El Paso history, was rescued by the El Paso Community Foundation and is a testament to the dreams of our predecessors and an inspiration for our future. PERMANENT MEMORIAL FUNDS Sharing the Legacy Each of these individuals honored by the creation of a memorial fund gave something special to their city. For some, it was leadership and business acumen; for others, a rich tradition of volunteerism, or their youth and promise. They are remembered and missed.
