As we head rapidly towards the end of the Fishing Season I thought it was a good time
to reflect on our fishing activities over the past year, and in doing so I realised how active
the club has been. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tony Hyett for coordinating the Trip Calendar over the season and also to those members who have
organised and run trips. The trips, events and activities that we organise and run are what
both attracts new members to Southern and also keep our membership base engaged.
Following on with the trip theme I would like to thank Ken Moran for organising the
annual Marysville Golf and Fishing Day which was once again a great success. During
the month Les Pratt ran a Noojee trip which saw some good fish caught and Tony Hyett
also ran a successful trip to the Goulburn River.
In terms of the trips coming up in May we have two Millbrook Lakes trips plus the 4WD
and Camping trip and a Steavenson River trip. The Millbrook Trips and the Steavenson
River trip provide a great opportunity for our newer members to get involved and also to
develop their skills, along with getting to know other members and potential members.
Our membership numbers remain strong and I would like to formally welcome David
Barry whose membership was confirmed at the May committee meeting. David has rejoined Southern after originally joining in 1968 and I am very pleased to welcome him
back.
Following discussions with the committee we have decided to consolidate our activity to
date over the next three months, particularly in relation to ensuring that we bed down our
increased membership base before moving onto other strategic initiatives. This will give
us some time to plan for next year which will involve setting some goals around key
initiatives such as exploring our own “Private Waters” facility.
In closing I would once again like to encourage our newer
members to take part in the trips that we have on the
agenda, and don’t be afraid to ask any of the committee
members or trip leaders for advice or information. I look
forward to continuing to see you at our meetings and trips,
even as we move into the ‘off season’ which just means
that we will do more lake fishing.
Don’t forget the Speaker this Wednesday night being
Professor Paul Boon who will be speaking on “How the
Gippsland Lakes have changed over the last 20 years”. This
will also be the first test of the new Audio Visual
equipment that has recently been installed – Thanks Peter
Cairns for this.

April 2015 saw eight of Southern Fly Fishers Greatest anglers embark on a trip of a
lifetime. The team were greeted by a number of locals who had gathered to the meeting
place of Southerns best, a coffee lounge in the middle of town, to cheer us on and wish us
well.
Well that’s how I saw it, maybe their chanting was telling us to get out of town.
Tony Hyett, Geoff Churcher, Jim Johnston, John MacIntyre, Jan Horak, Paul Harris,
Malcolm Green where all headed up by Lez Pratt our hero and trip leader for the day.
After much frivolity the well-trained team set off to secret spots on one of the many
delightful streams available to us in the area.
The weather was perfect and so was our fishing. Approx. 25 fish were captured on
nymphs and dries and expertly released to fight another day, with also a number missed,
the Royal stimulator a favourite. I was informed by the new members attending, especially
Paul Harris who I just happened to be mentoring, that they gained plenty of valuable
information on the finer point of fly fishing.
Noojee is a very pretty area with a number of small streams running clear and wade able,
although many have quite a number of fallen trees to negotiate. These streams hold a
number of small trout and even the occasional one to one and a half pounder but very few.
These streams are also a perfect place for the new members of Southern Fly Fishers to get
together with an experienced fisher person as a mentor and learn heaps.
As new members please understand that all our trips are not just for the experienced, they
are set up to cater for beginners and mentors will be allocated to you, BUT in order to
learn more about our favourite sport you as new members need to attend these trips.
Theatre at the meetings is a help, but know where near as beneficial as the practical side.
So join in, car pool with someone going and get on with it.
Please on these trips could we all try to support these struggling small communities that
we visit by purchasing our lunches etc. locally. But don’t feel you should not bring your
own if you desire.
Rivers in Victoria close for the spawning season in the first weekend of June till the first
weekend of September, so we can look forward to some great lake fishing within these
months.
Keep fishing

Our prospects were not looking good on the Saturday with torrential rain across the State
and it looked even worse in the early hours of Sunday, but as we know the weather over
the Divide can be different to Melbourne. With that thought in mind I decided that we
would not cancel and at least hope for passing showers at the worst.
At a coffee break at Healesville, some who will not be named became they were
engrossed at the radar scene on their phones and decided that this stop was far enough and
went back home to bed, the more optimistic decided to press on and "Wallah" only grey
skies and drizzle greeted us on the first tee. 8 intrepid diehards teed off but by the 3rd hole
the sun was shining, unbelievable, and the contest was on in earnest.
For those golfers who walked and played fast the round was completed without getting
wet however those that walked slow and played slower did get a little wet on the last hole.
Next year only 2 practice swings allowed not 20
Ray "Tiger" Boast was outstanding and in difficult conditions carded a very respectable
20 points to take the honours in fact it was daylight to everyone else.
We finished with a great BBQ lunch before going off to see if we could entice a fish or
two to enhance the day, as a note, those who fished early instead of golfing did not
contribute any fish for the BBQ.
With the skies clearing and the occasional "sun burst" it was waders on and 11 members,
John Mac, Jan, Julian, Keith, Ray, Geoff, Jim, Les, Ken, Connor & Phil went out to those
secret spots we all know about.
The local streams were flowing well and were not affected by the heavy rains and the
reports tallied to approx. 20 fish released back for another day. Interestingly, the tally was
about 50/50 browns and rainbows all in good condition but of course small in size. Most
were taken on nymphs on size 16/18.
Special thanks to Ray & Les who mentored two
new members Keith & Phil on these small streams
and while the catch was low the experience was
high.
All in all we had a great day and even if the golf
score or fish score was not what it was hoped for,
the camaraderie on these days makes it worthwhile.
See you all next year
Regards,
Ken Moran

Five minutes with Muz Wilson – the River Gnome
by Peter Hayes
Muz Wilson is perhaps Australia’s best known fly tier and more importantly he is one of
the most innovative fly designers on the planet.
Recently while Muz was visiting Tasmania and participating at a fly fishing workshop at
our Cressy facility Mike Stevens was able to identify the importance of this man and his
contribution to fly fishing. Mike has asked me to pen a few words about this remarkable
individual.
In the industry and among his friends they call him the “River Gnome” Muz looks, and
behaves like I would imagine one to behave. Anyway he certainly has my children
convinced.
One evening late in the season there were six good anglers fishing on Brumby’s Creek.
The fishing was slow. We all returned to the lodge just after dark and someone who had
not gone out asked how we went.
My 7 year old son Lachlan immediately replied that the River Gnome was the only one
to catch one. Lachie said it with such conviction that his 5 YO sister Maddie followed on
with yeah he caught it on his Fuzzle Fly and he lost 4 others. They really believe he is a
gnome.
Muz knows fish, I mean really knows fish and there is much we can learn from hanging
out with him. That evening was a good example. I think he had a total of 7 fish come to
his fly while the remaining 5 anglers had 1. I personally don’t think it was as much about
the fly as his method of fishing it. Muz explained to me and the kids that you must do a
musical tune retrieve. I can tell you he is right and more about the tunes later.
As I understand it my mate Nick Voce taught Muz to tie flies some 20 years back. Nick
met him in a tackle store at Camperdown and struck up what has turned out to be a
lifelong friendship. His fishing skills were originally honed in Victorian waterways and he
probably knows more about catching bream on fly than anyone else in the country.
Muz is an intelligent little gnome. He is educated and has many life experiences. Most
obvious to me is his passion for fishing and all things related, his generous spirit and his
lateral thinking skills. It is a combination of these assets that have enabled him to be a
leading edge fly designer.
$
Muz played with hooks and feathers, and everything else he could get his hands on, for
three days at Cressy. I really mean he played, it is play to Muz nothing more, nothing less.
I was in awe of his technical tying skills. I lost count of the number of original patterns he
has developed and his uncanny ability to develop new tying techniques for obscure
materials is amazing. If you ever get a chance to see the Gnome at play you should seize
it.
8$
Vale'Muz'Wilson'(cont.)'
'Some of the developments he is responsible for that spring to mind are:
• Development of the SLF material and the BMS fly.
• Rolling furs and other materials in see through waterproof tape to make Damsel and
stick caddis bodies.
• Taking the UK based booby pattern and turning it into a yabbie for mainland
Australian lakes.
• Developing the Fuzzle Bugger which in my opinion is a huge improvement on what
was considered one of the world’s greatest flies a Woolly Bugger.
• Upside down minnows that are snag proof and the Hammerhead bream flies.
• There is a new upside down foam and CDC dun that is revolutionary and I know it
will sort out thousands of Highland mayfly feeding trout next season.
Keep an eye out for Muz, his fly patterns and his tying materials. There is much to learn
from him.
All-time favourite fly:
Stick Caddis, because of the memorable fish it has caught and the type of fishing it is used
for ambushing or hunting or setting a trap and watching it unfold.
If you only had one day left to fish:
Mongolia, to catch Taimen. They are 6 foot long fish that eat dry flies in rivers.
Most inspirational angler:
Blimey! Ohhh! A really tough question.
I like reading Geirach and Randall Kauffman for stuff he has done. Wulff is the pioneer of
everything. Morse and Weigall. Bill Beck is an absolute vulture and Jim Allen would be
another inspiration. What I like about Jim is he is not too technical just get it out there.
David Scholes I can relate to stuff about Northern Tasmania Rivers and flood plain fishing
like here in Western Victoria.
First fish:
On a fly a little rainbow out of Bullen Merri on a Black Matuka.
First memorable fish was a one kilo brown from the Hopkins River, sneaking along,
working pools with a very small Red and Black Matuka on 12 hook. I had bought it from
Ray Long in Geelong

VRfish are involved in the following points listed below:• Good outcomes are being achieved in relation the recreational fishery and water
security at Lake Toolondo. A short term solution was secured with a 5,000 ML
water allocation to see the Lake through summer.
• The Murray cod slot limits were introduced in December 2014, though these have
been adjusted from the limit initially proposed, to a slot of 55-75cm in order to
achieve consistent cross-jurisdictional limits with NSW.
• VRFish submitted a response to claims against recreational pipi fishing at Venus
Bay.
• Taylor Hunt provided an excellent presentation on the background and progress to
date in relation to the Wild Trout Fishery Management Response Plan. The
response plan is a significant investment in trout fishery research and recognises the
social and economic contribution that the species makes to Victoria - a copy was
sent to SFF.
• Scott Gray presented his rationale supporting removal of the closed season for trout
in SW Victorian rivers. Generally VRFish did not support this proposal.
• Minister Jaala Pulford provided a good presentation on the Labor Government’s
Target One Million policy.
• VRFish emphasised succession planning & managing knowledge transfer with in
clubs. The importance of clubs and associations undertaking succession planning
and nurturing young leaders was highlighted to ensure the longevity of clubs.
• A member raised the concept of raising revenue through creating a voluntary
licence fee for pensioners. This would not only raise additional revenue, but would
provide some recognition for pensioners.
• The new Government is still working through the details of implementation for the
policy commitment on $2k club grants. The basis of the grants should be about
around training, capacity building and getting kids involved. The grants represent a
good opportunity for clubs to improve membership over the next 10 years.
• Information regarding the review of the trout policy that VRFish is currently
undertaking was presented. In order to assist with the review, members were asked
to raise two risks and two opportunities in relation to the trout fishery and it’s
management.
VRFish contacted me to be their representative on the DEPI Translocation Evaluation
Panel. DEPI have confirmed my submission and are I am waiting for their approval.
All items may not be specifically applicable to fly fishing but were included for general
interest. The items which were applicable were forwarded to the SFF secretary for action
if required.

Fly Tying with Max Kepert
Fly Tying sessions with Max Kepert will be having a break at the moment, notices will
be put up when Max’s sessions restart.
Charles Bradley’s Fly Box
At most Members Nights and General Meetings you will spot Charles Bradley with a
couple of boxes containing a variety of flies. These are flies that have either been donated
to Charles or produced during Max’s sessions and they are for sale at a price of $1.50
each. Charles often has quite a variety of individual flies for sale so make sure that you
don’t miss out when you see the box open.

'''22nd'April'2015'
DELEGATES REPORT:
CVFFC
Meeting at Omeo was poorly supported with 7 attendees
representing 5 clubs, no significant actions to be reported.
ATF:
Colin Mc Millan reported.
The monthly city meeting was replaced with a meeting
conducted in Myrtelford on Saturday 11 April. Executive
members and some committee members attended this meeting
along with ATF members from the north east of the state.
Formal minutes have not been circulated as yet but a verbal
report was that several issues and possible actions were raised by
the local members. The Committee will look into these.
I attended a Projects Committee meeting on Tuesday 21st April.
This is a newly formed sub-committee, so most of the meeting
was discussing past projects and procedures in acquiring grants
and working with Govt. bodies.
Two small projects were instigated with tasks designated to
members.
1.
Bag limit signage for the Eildon area.
2.
Catch and release brochure, for distribution state wide.
I have requested that the minutes of meetings held while I am
away be sent to SFF President and Secretary so our members
can be kept informed.
ACF & CASTING:
Tom Galloway advised next Brunn is at red Tag 3rd May.
COMBINED CLUBS: Need to follow up on defibrillator purchase.
FLYFISHER:
Steve has requested all articles be sent before the 9th May.
LIBRARY:
History of Fly Fishing has been purchased for the library
Colin has prepared a complete inventory of the library which
will be available for review by members on the website very
shortly.
WEB SITE:
All up to date, Phil Magness will be happy to receive any
suggestions, input from Members.
GENERAL BUSINESS:
Scott advised the members of the passing of Muz Wilson. Muz was an icon within our
sport and is fondly remembered for his lifelong contribution to the fly fishing fraternity.
Tom Galloway was thanked for his work in repointing the brick works around our pool,
no small job for one man.

General'Meeting'Minutes'(cont.)' ' ' '''22nd'April'2015'
' Members were reminded and encouraged to come along to the Wednesday “socials” run
by Darryl Foulds.
If you have any suggestions on what you would like to be arranged at these socials give
Darryl a call and let him know. He is a very friendly bloke.
Dean Gordon spoke of the recent passing of Malcolm Fraser and acknowledged his
contribution to fly fishing that, in the main, went unnoticed but he was responsible for
some significant actions effecting our water ways in his political life.
New members are encouraged to get on the trip sheets, the club will ensure you have a
mentor who will help with whatever you believe is required. Don’t be put off by any lack
of skills, remember everyone at one time was a learner.

Fishing reports
Pete Golding fished the Penstock area in Tasmania and reported excellent surface action
with fish taken up to 6 lb.
Colin McMillan fished the Jamieson and Howqua regions for very few fish however he
reported that the waters were teeming with Carp, a very depressing sight.
Ray Goddard fished the South Isle of NZ, saw lots of fish but they were exceptionally
spooky and very few were landed.
Tony H, Roly Ansems (where are you Roly), Graeme Forrestor and his mate fished the
rivers around Maedena with little luck, moved to Penstock and much better results. Tony
reported he had the best fishing when he went to his secret spot known as “PP” but again
no pics of proof, yet.

General'Meeting'Minutes'(cont.)' ' ' '''22nd'April'2015'
' Les Pratt hosted a trip to Noojee with 9 members, 2 new members Paul & Chris were
mentored by Les & Tony (thanks guys) and while results were disappointing both enjoyed
the experience of at least hooking up and Paul managed to land one for his efforts. Jim J,
Tony & Les managed a few rainbows while Jan Horak and Malcolm Green moved to the
Tarongo and while Malcolm found it hard going, Jan managed to land 8.
Dean Gordon, Graeme Forrestor and his mate fished Deans Reservoir and reported some
good action, when it went quiet moved to Newlyn’s but advise it’s a waste of time while
water is low.
Warning, Dean noted that while we are approaching winter, the snakes at Deans are still
around and to be very careful.
Our new members are encouraged to come on our trips and experienced members
will always help.
Members Draw was $120 and it was won by John Worrell who happily took home his
cheque.
To all new members, you must be in attendance to win.
