URBAN FARMING WINTER SEMINAR

Want to get a jump on the 2016 growing season? Looking for some new ideas for
your garden? In addition to a delicious hot breakfast you’ll gather information
and learn all about resources needed to make this your best gardening season
ever! This popular seminar quickly fills up so be sure to register early!

Beginner or Expert, whether you have a green thumb or are just getting started,
our gardener has the answers you need for the 2016 growing season.
FARMING
PLOT IT FRESH, $10/PER PLOT
Love to garden but don’t have the space? Always wanted to plant some veggies
but lacked the know-how? “Rent” a garden plot at one of our locations throughout the city. For only $10 per plot you’ll get space, seeds, and information on
how to grow (one plot per family). Sign ups for 2016 season start in January.

APPLE PICKING AT TERHUNE ORCHARDS

There will be fun for the entire family at our Annual Fall Block Party! You’ll find
crafts and activities for children, local vendors, gardening demos, Youth Farm
Stand, cooking demos and much more!
How do you like them apples? Join us at Terhune Orchards to pick some delicious
apples. There will also be live music, ponyrides, and a corn stalk maze. Cost includes
transportation and admission to farm. Cost of apples/pumpkins not included.
MOVIE NIGHT: FED UP
FORAGING THRU FALL HIKE

Happy Halloween! Creepy jack-o-lanterns, scary costumes, or candy? One of these
will surely scare you into action and you won’t believe which one! We’ll provide a
healthy snack during the movie and a lively discussion afterwards.
Get out of the city and into the woods! During the hike, we will focus on wild
edibles including berries, nuts, fungi, greens, and more. Bring lunch. This hike
is a beginner/intermediate level at South Mountain Reservation. Please dress
accordingly. We will depart 32 Prince Street at 10am and return by 3pm.

PLANT PROPAGATION ESSENTIALS
Saturday, January 16 • 10–11:30am • $10
Explore the basics of creating multiple plants through cutting and dividing
mature plants. Practice your technique and bring home a plant you propagated!
It’s not too soon to start planning for next summer. If you’re a high school
student who is a motivated, self-starting leader who loves to step outside your
comfort zone, then you may qualify for our Newark Youth Leadership Project.

All plants require water to grow and thrive but did you know soil is optional? Stop
by to learn how this is possible and what the benefits are—and how you can grow
plants in just water at home!
SEED STARTING
Saturday, March 26 • 10–11AM • $5
Most plants produce seeds which we then harvest to sow in our garden.
Discuss the conditions seeds need to begin growing and how to tackle
common complications.
EDUCATION

Our teaching kitchen programs are designed to educate people about the benefits
of healthy eating and to make cooking fun. Students will have the opportunity to
harvest food from our garden and learn to make healthy nutritious snacks.

Enjoy this festive season by decorating your business or home with beautiful
poinsettias. Sourced from a local grower, we will offer selections in red, white,
pink and marbled with sizes ranging from 6” to 10”. Complete your holiday
decor with a lovely 10” wreath with red bow. Deliveries begin Tuesday,
December 1. Pickup in our greenhouse begins Wednesday, December 2.
Whether you are thinking about starting a garden at your school, or want to
improve the garden that you have, this workshop is for you! Please plan on
assembling a garden team of a few staff members, including your school’s
principal or vice principal, to attend the workshop.
NUTS & BOLTS AND SEEDS & SOIL

This workshop will focus on the mechanics of growing (mostly edible) plants
within the school garden context. Even if you missed our earlier sessions, jump
