We are again grateful to the Shearer Family Fund and Scott Shearer for underwriting the Spring Concert Series - without their help we would be unable to present these artists in Central PA. Please attend these events and remember that we maintain the highest musical standards - if you missed our April 6th concert, I am truly sorry. Cecile McLorin Salvant is a rising star vocalist and she and the Aaron Diehl Trio really delivered. She will be in the jazz stratosphere very soon and we are pleased to have presented her early in her career. The audience response was enthusiastic and deserved. Please make an effort to attend the May 25th event at WITF - two more amazing artists - Ehud Asherie and Ken Peplowski - story on pg. 4. Executive Director Sheila Ross Office Manager CPFJ Board of Directors: John Abel (Youth Committee) Dr. William Anderson (Membership) Troy Ballard (Marketing) Gerald Bennett (President Grants Chair) Eugene Borza (Youth Committee) Ben Goldsborough (Youth Committee Chair) Dr. Paul Haidet (Newsletter) Keith Mohler (Marketing) Tonya Mowery (Sectretary) Keith Thomas (Vice President & Concessions) Amy Walizer We have been awarded a generous grant from the Dauphin County Commissioners that will enable us to present a concert on September 5th at Fort Hunter Park as part of the Dauphin County Jazz & Wine Festival. The Festival’s regular schedule is on September 6th & 7th and our added evening will bring mainstream jazz to the event which has been predominantly “smooth” jazz in past years. We have secured the services of jazz vocalist Rene Marie and our own Tim Warfield, Jr. will bring his popular Organ Band featuring organist Pat Bianchi. This event will serve as the first concert in our annual Fall Concert Series. For those of you who haven’t attended the Festival previously, there is a very large tent that protects the audience and stage area from the elements and the concerts go on rain or shine. Sponsor, Corporate, and Life Members of CPFJ will get free tickets to the entire weekend and there will be wine tasting and food available for purchase during our concert and the entire weekend. This event adds more value to our Sponsor & Corporate memberships - JOIN or RENEW NOW!! Tickets are available for purchase now from the Dauphin Co. Parks and Recreation website - look for the Festivals and Special Events page. We are grateful to the Commissioners for their support of CPFJ. Our 34th Annual Central PA Jazz Festival will include a concert at Mt. Gretna Playhouse on August 10th with Philadelphia bassist Lee Smith’s Sextet and Hendrik Meurkens Samba Jazz Quartet. We thank Music at Gretna for offering to co-host a concert in this wonderful facility. Planning for the Festival should be complete in time for the June newsletter, so keep an eye on our website for updates in Festival artists and events. A JazzWalk, Picnic, Riverboat Cruise and workshops will be included in this annual jazz feast. The CPFJ Board has voted to move the 2015 Festival to April or May, enabling us to incorporate more educational components with performances by area high schools and youth groups. Ehud Asherie, "a master of swing and stride" (The New Yorker), is a jazz pianist who integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style. Born in Israel in 1979, Asherie lived in Italy for six years before his family moved to New York. Though he began playing piano as a child, his passion for jazz came later—with a Thelonious Monk cassette tape—and his first visit to Smalls Jazz club in Greenwich Village. Largely self-taught, or rather, “old-schooled,” Asherie learned the ropes at Smalls, spending the wee small hours of his early teens becoming a fixture of the latenight jam sessions. Mentored by the late Frank Hewitt, Asherie began to develop “his virtuosity and his ear for clean, crisp lines“ (The Star-Ledger). Finding his home at Smalls, Asherie went from leading the Sunday night sessions to being featured, in 1999, with the Grant Stewart Quartet. Soon after, he headlined with his own trio, Trio 65, who went on to play a two-year engagement at the Rainbow Room, six nights a week. Steeped in the jazz milieu, absorbing the work of his contemporaries, Asherie grew to revere the lineage he evolved from. Having branched backwards in time, from bebop to stride, Asherie views jazz as a living art form, an organic thing: each standard tune open to a constant reinterpretation. It is this philosophy that caught the attention of world-class saxophonist and collaborator Harry Allen, who called Asherie “…modern yet traditional at the same time…in the most wonderful way.” . From Smalls to the Rainbow Room, from Lincoln Center to The Village Vanguard, Asherie has worked with a broad range of musicians: Howard Alden, Eric Alexander, Roy Ayers, Wycliffe Gordon, Scott Hamilton, Charles McPherson, Jane Monheit, Bob Mover, Ken Peplowski and Clark Terry. Asherie tours clubs and festivals around the world, including South America, Europe and Asia. He has released over ten albums, five as leader, including Organic (Posi-tone, 2010) and a solo album entitled Welcome to New York (Arbors, 2010). For a complete listing of albums, and more about Ehud Asherie, please visit www.ehudasherie.com Growiing up in Cleveland, Ohio, Ken Peplowski played his first pro engagement when he was still in elementary school. “From my first time performing in public, I knew I wanted to play music for a living.” By the time Ken was in his early teens, he was experimenting with jazz and after a year of college, Ken joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow. “I learned the discipline that goes with playing one-nighters every day for 48 weeks out of the year, and Buddy was a great, very generous bandleader.” Peplowski studied with the legendary saxophonist Sonny Stitt and in 1980, Ken moved to New York City. He joined Benny Goodman’s new band in 1984 and signed with Concord Records shortly after, recording 20 albums for them. He has played diverse venues - from small clubs to a sold out performance at the Hollywood Bowl and he has been featured on soundtracks of Woody Allen movies, guest soloing on many recordings. The litany of musicians Ken has collaborated with includes: Mel Torme, Leon Redbone, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Madonna, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, Steve Allen, Bill Charlap, Woody Allen, Marianne Faithfull, Isaac Delgado & Erich Kunzel. Peplowski also does many workshops for students of all ages and is a Buffet-Crampon artist, and plays the R-13 clarinet, with a Portnoy mouthpiece and Van Doren German-cut reeds. He also plays a Yamaha tenor sax and a Berg Larsen mouthpiece. Ken Peplowski has recorded approximately 50 CDs as a soloist, and close to 400 as a sideman. Ken is the current musical director of the Oregon Festival Of American Music (OFAM), and is a longtime performer/consultant to The Jazz Cruise, where he was placed into the Jazz Cruise Hall Of Fame in 2013. He resides in New York City with his wife, dog, and whatever children happen to be passing through. “Mr. Peplowski sounds the way (Benny) Goodman might if he had kept evolving, kept on listening to new music, kept refining his sound, polishing his craft, and expanding his musical purview into the 21st century.” – Will Friedwald in The Wall Street Journal, December 2012 In 2014, Ken was the recipent of the Sarasota Jazz Festival’s “Satchmo” award, given to him for his “unique and enduring contribution to the living history of jazz”. For more information on Ken, visit www.kenpeplowski.com 4 CENTRAL PA JAZZ CAMP - JUNE 18-20, 2014 Messiah College, Mechanicsburg, PA: Dr. William Stowman will host our annual Jazz Camp in Messiah's beautiful High Center. On Sunday, April 6th we gathered at the Grace M Pollock Center for the Performing Arts in Camp Hill for a three part program of young players and singers. The word is out about Cecile McLorin Salvant's talent and her recent awards, for the audience included many of our veteran jazz fans along with several interstate guests. The evening began with the Tim Wolfe, Jr. Trio: Mr. Wolfe- bass, Justin Morrell - guitar, Ryan Kauffman - saxophone. They opened with several standards and the only original of the night, Mr. Wolfe's The Fox. The playing was modern capable improvisations. Mr. Wolfe is a strong leader on bass. He teaches the instrument at Lebanon Valley College and his groups can be found playing in Lancaster and Philadelphia. CPFJ concessions has his new CD, Topics of Conversation. The Trio was followed by the Camp Hill High School Jazz Vocal Ensemble, led by educator David Shover. These 8 young voices sang Don't Get Around Much Anymore, My Romance, and God Bless The Child with skill and enthusiasm, that overcame the canned instrumental backing. Surely somewhere, Grace Pollock, who started out in show business, was smiling along with the audience. In short order, The Aaron Diehl Trio, Mr. Diehl-piano, Paul Sikivie - bass, and Peter Van Nostrand - drums, were introduced. They started playing, Ms. Salvant walked to the microphone, and began with I Only Have Eyes For You. It only took a few moments for us recognize we were in the presence of a great Trio backing an extraordinary voice. The audience was murmuring with delight along with shouts of approval. When Ms. Salvant used her range, the names Sarah and Ella came to mind. With a few exceptions the concert contained show tunes dating from mid century back to 1928. Ms. Salvant introduced each, including the name of the composer and what show or movie originated the song. These included Bert Williams' Nobody, Cole Porter's So In Love, Ted Furito's Laugh Clown, Laugh, and The Trolley Song, (originally sung by Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis). These kinds of songs have a story to tell about personality and emotion. Ms. Salvant sang these dramatic stories convincingly. Her voice easily filled the room even as she held the microphone at her waist. The piano accompaniment was often sparse, yet Mr. Diehl's solos were intricate and masterful She continued with The Step Sister's Lament (from Cinderella), He's Gone Again, Bob Dorough’s I'm Hip, and Blanche (sister of Cab) Calloway's Growlin' Dan. Her vocal growling trumpet was simply amazing. She finished with a sarcastic Wives and Lovers, Bernstein’s Something's Coming, and a bluesy duet encore with the bass. Keith Thomas, Vice President CPFJ JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND Director Ron Waters announced that rehearsals have started for the CPFJ Youth Band. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Directed by Ron Waters, the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!! 9 8 May 24-26 Harrisburg Arts Fest CPFJ Tent at Front and Walnut Streets - Harrisburg Sat. 5/24 & Sun. 5/26 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. - Mon. 5/26 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. We will have a promotional tent at the Arts Fest again this year and thank our friends at Jump Street for including us in this major event. Gretna PA 7:30 p.m. Lee Smith Group “Sittin’ on a Secret” Lee Smith – bass Marc Adler – flute Tim Thompson – trumpet Tim Warfield, Jr. - sax Joshua Richman – piano Justin Faulkner – drums Lee W. Smith was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA and has had a great career, touring the world with many great musicians from a wide range of styles. During Lee’s pre-jazz era, he toured internationally and recorded with several Philadelphia-based R&B recording artists including the Delphonics and Billy Paul. This period was followed by a 5 year stint with Latin Jazz giant Mongo Santamaria. Since then, Lee has worked with numerous jazz greats including Cab Calloway, Lionel Hampton, Erskine Hawkins, Benny Golson, Bud Shank, Dizzy Gillespie, Cedar Walton, Donald Harrison, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Greg Osby, Roberta Flack, Sonny Fortune, Odean Pope, Billy Hart, and Trudy Pitts. He is the father of three sons and one of them has grown to be a jazz bass giant - Christian McBride. Promoting his wonderful new CD, Sittin’ on a Secret”, bassist Lee Smith brings most of the band from the recording to our 34th Annual Central PA Jazz Festival. These players are all stars in modern jazz - many of you will remember drummer Justin Faulkner from his regular gig with Branford Marsalis and from his appearance at our Jam Session at last year’s Jazz Fest. Don’t miss this great band! Hendrik Meurkens Samba Jazz Quartet Hendrik Meurkens - harmonica, vibes Misha Tsiganov - piano Gustavo Amarante - bass Adriano Santos - drums Hendrik Meurkens, a virtuoso on both the chromatic harmonica and the vibraphone, is the most important jazz harmonica player since Toots Thielemans. German-born but now based in New York, Meurkens’ recordings and performances garner worldwide acclaim because the transcendent beauty of his music has universal appeal. A two-mallet player in the tradition of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, Hendrik Meurkens was en-route to being an instantly recognizable vibraphonist when he heard Toots Thielemans. Inspired by the sound of Thielemans’ harmonica, he taught himself the difficult-to-master instrument. As a featured artist, he has recorded with Charlie Byrd, Jimmy Cobb, Ivan Lins, Monty Alexander, Claudio Roditi, and Mundell Lowe, as well as backing such leading artists as Astrid Gilberto and Olivia Newton John and touring with the Ray Brown Trio, Paquito D’Rivera, Oscar Castro Neves, Herb Ellis, Herbie Mann, Charlie Byrd, and James Moody among many others. He has recorded steadily with 22 Cds in his catalog. Hendrik remains equally at home playing jazz or Brazilian music. “My mission is simple,” he explains. “I want to create music of great beauty.” With New York City based Russian pianist Tsiganov and Brazilian players Amarante and Santos this should be a memorable performance.
