Note from the Composer
The city of Savannah, the oldest city in the state of Georgia, has a rich history and
an air of intrigue. The historic downtown area is filled with twenty-two squares,
one of which is Chippewa Square. Many of you will recognize Chippewa Square
as the location where the bus stop scene from the movie Forrest Gump was filmed.
The square is filled with huge, moss-laden trees that provide a large, shaded area.
Nearby church bells toll the hour. All of this contributes to the air of mystery in
Chippewa Square.

The song seeks to reflect the mystery of the river city of Savannah. If you listen
closely, you will hear the sound of bells tolling in the accompaniment. As the song
ends and the night turns to day, the city returns to life, except for one soul, covered
in bronze, who stands still, waving and waiting. This is a reference to a statue of
"The Waving Girl" on the historic riverfront of Savannah. According to legend, she
waved at every ship that entered and left the Port of Savannah for forty-four years,
waving a handkerchief by day and a lantern by night.
When singing this song, be sure to listen for pure vowel sounds and a beautiful
blend with all voices. Let your voices reflect the mystery of the text. Keep the sound
smooth and legato. Let the music build in intensity as the mystery couple begins
their waltz in the square, and then return to the mood of the opening at the end of
the piece.
