spends some of her youth here.
1276 Péter Csák attacks the castle of Veszprém, ransacks the cathedral and sets fire to the
country’s first school of higher education.

1458-1486 The city of Veszprém becomes a
cultural centre during the time of Bishop Albert
Vetési. He crowns Queen Beatrix in 1476.

RE-BUILDING VESZPRÉM IN THE 18th
CENTURY
1745-1762 Márton Padányi Biró is the bishop
of Veszprém. During his time, the Castle Hill
district (Várnegyed) begins to turn into what will
become its present-day image.
1762-1773 Ignác Koller is the last bishop lord
lieutenant. He commissions the building of the
Baroque style Bishop’s Palace (Püspöki Palota)
between 1776 and 1778.
1767 György Tummler’s aquaduct is built.

1925 The “County Museum” (Vármegyei Múzeum) is completed.
1935 Building of “Bakonyi House” (Bakonyi
Ház).
1936 The Heroes’ Gate (Hősök Kapuja) is built
to commemorate the victims of WWI.
1938 To honour the 900th anniversary of King
Stephen’s death, several monuments are
restored and the stone statue of King Stephen
and Queen Gisela is inaugurated on the Castle
Hill. The Viaduct, built in 1937, receives the
name St. Stephen Viaduct (Szent István völgyhíd).
IN 1944, FROM THE END OF OCTOBER TO
THE 6TH OF DECEMBER the Holy Crown of
Hungary is kept in Veszprém.
VESZPRÉM AFTER 1945 TILL NOWADAYS
1ST OF FEBRUARY, 1946 Hungary becomes a
republic.
1949 The “University of Chemical Industry”
(Veszprémi Vegyipari Egyetem) – today University of Pannonia (Pannon Egyetem) - is
established.
23RD OF OCTOBER, 1956 The citizens of
Veszprém join the Hungarian Revolution.
4TH OF NOVEMBER, 1956 Soviet troops invade
the city.
FROM 1957 ON Public institutions and housing
estates are built.
1958 The Veszprém Zoo opens.
1967-1968 The new image of the city centre
starts to form.
1975 Restoration of valuable monuments in the
city centre and in the castle area.
FROM 1989 Due to Hungary’s political
transition, the Soviet troops (present since
1945) leave the country. Veszprém receives new
privileges as it becomes a city with county level
authority and function. The bishopric receives
the rank of archbishopric. The former names of
certain streets are restored.
2010 The full renewal of the Veszprém Valley
and the city centre begins.

“WALKIN’ DOWN THE KOSSUTH STREET…”
THE NEW FACE OF OUR CITY CENTRE
Kossuth Street - Pedestrian Street
The pedestrian street was rebuilt together with
the entire city centre. Along this peaceful street,
stores with new, matching appearance await
customers. After a busy day of shopping, you
can have a rest on the St Emeric Square (Szent
Imre tér) where a playground was established to
the families’ delight. From the pedestrian street
an underpass with disabled access leads to the
nearby market place. There is also a new tourist
information point in Kossuth Street. Not far from
here, various events and conferences are held in
the newly finished Hangvilla, on the site of the
former Séd Cinema.
Balaton Crown
In the East Balaton region of Veszprém county
the settlements Balatonalmádi, Balatonfüred, Litér, Nemesvámos, Tihany, Várpalota
and Veszprém set up an initiative known as
the Balaton Crown, a local money substitute
voucher system, which you can use in exactly
the same way as Forints. The establishments
accepting the Balaton Crown also give
discounts to the customers. Look out for the
places which display the Balaton Crown sign
in this brochure and also in the settlements!

Street Gallery
The underpass in Budapest Street, named
after the artist László Szilágyi, received public
and cultural functions as of September, 2013.
Szilágyi, who was a punk painter born in
Veszprém but died young. One end of the
underpass also lists the names of artists whose
works can be seen in the Modern Art Gallery
– Vass László Collection (Modern Képtár –
Vass László Gyűjtemény).

ECCLESIASTICAL TREASURES
Beatified Gisela Archdiocese Collection
Veszprém has the country’s second richest
ecclesiological collection. In its permanent exhibition
about the queen-crowning bishops visitors can see
Bishop Albert Vetési’s Venetian chasuble from the 15th
century, the copy of the coronation mantle made in
Vienna in the 19th century and the chasuble set made
from the coronation robe of Queen Elizabeth.
The exhibition opens on the 7th of May, 2014.

Gisela Chapel
This episcopal or royal private chapel was built
by Bishop Robertus. The walls are covered with
Byzantine frescoes of the apostles painted in the 13th
century which are among the oldest paintings in Hungary. Other unique traits of the chapel include its archstones.
St George Chapel
During the archaeological restoration of the 13th
century chapel a round church (rotunda) was found.
The legend of St Emeric, written between 1109 and
1112, mentions this building. The chapel used to
house the head relic of St George, received by St
Stephen from the Byzantine emperor as a gift for his
victory over the Bulgarians between 1016 and 1018.

diplomat of King Matthias, can still be seen here.
Archbishop’s Palace – “Remembrance of
Queens Elisabeth and Zita” interior exhibition
The Palace, a masterpiece of the Hungarian baroque
architecture was built between 1765 and 1776. Its
construction was commissioned by Bishop Ignác Koller and was designed by Jakab Fellner, architect of the
Esterházy family. The Palace’s interior is decorated
with gypsum stuccos by the Italian artist Giuseppe
Orsatti, with frescoes on the ceiling painted in 1772 by
Viennese artist Johann Cymbal, engravings ordered
from Paris by Ignác Koller, and a settee with mother
of pearl inlay made to honour the visit of Queen
Elisabeth and other gorgeous Empire style furniture
decorate the rooms.
St Emeric Piarist and Garrison Church
This Classicist style church is dedicated to Saint
Imre and the Virgin Mary. The frescoes covering the
ceiling were painted by Antal Szirmai, the apsis walls
were made by Ferenc Bucher and the altarpiece by
Rudolf Steiner. It was built next to the Piarist school
and monastery (Piarista Gimnázium és Rendház), the
modern educational and spiritual centre of the Piarists
who settled in Veszprém in 1711. Today the church
belongs to the Hungarian Military. Its exhibition room
hosts exhibitions of ecclesiological and contemporary
visual art from the Beatified Gisela Archdiocese
Collection. The St Emeric Piarist and Garrison Church
can be visited for free, however it is closed in the
winter season.

The Archbishop’s Palace is the home of the Diocese
and Prebendal Archive (Veszprémi Érseki és Főkáptalani Levéltár), which has one of the largest Hungarian
collections of medieval documents. Groups need to
register in advance to visit the archive.
There are some interesting activities in store for
student groups: they can paint coats of arms or create
medieval documents.

THE OPEN CHURCH
Franciscan Church
The Franciscan Church, built with one nave between
1723 and 1730 in Baroque style, can be found in the
Castle area. The only original piece of the Neo-Roman
style facade is the gate, facing east, decorated with
a keystone. To the left from the gate a marble board
commemorates Pál Ányos, the poet priest who is
buried in the crypt of the church.
St Michael’s Basilica
St Michael’s Basilica, built in the times of the
Hungarian Ruler Árpád with two towers and three
naves, was already mentioned in a document of
Pannonhalma Abbey from 1001. The crypt of the
cathedral was built in Roman style in the 11th century
and the sanctuary was added in the 14th century in
Gothic style. It gained its current Neo-Roman style
when the cathedral was refurbished between 1907
and 1910. The stained glass windows depict Saints
from the Árpád House. The cathedral has been the
home of the arm bone relics of the Beatified Queen
Gisella since 1996.
The basilica can be visited from May to October every
day between 10.00 and 19.00 through the side door.
Salesianum - Archbishopric’s Tourist Centre
Interactive exhibition halls, a glass bottomed herb
room, splendid interiors decorated with Baroque style
wall paintings, treasures of the liturgy, a working violin
maker’s workshop, a herb garden with great views,
wafer and candle making workshops, a cinema room,
a children’s activity area, various colourful temporary
exhibitions: can all be found in the Salesianum!

THE HOME OF CULTURE
HOUSE OF ARTS
Csikász Gallery
The Csikász Gallery can be found in the gateway
leading to the Fire Lookout Tower and it houses
temporary exhibitions for the House of Arts. The
gallery frequently offers guided tours of the temporary
exhibitions, art appreciation programmes and often
house audiences with various artists.

Modern Art Gallery – Vass László Collection
This collection is the most significant art collection
of the works of constructivist artists in Hungary. The
permanent exhibition includes the creations of artists
such as Jenő Barcsay, István Haraszty, Francoise
Morellet, Alan Charlton, Max Bill and other famous
Hungarian and international artists.
In May the temporary exhibition room hosts the
exhibition of works by the German visual artist
Reinhard Roy while in July visitors can see the works
of Dutch visual artist Bob Bonies.
Dubniczay Palace – László Károly Collection
As one of the most beautiful late Baroque style buildings
of Veszprém, the Palace built in 1751, is the home of the
visual art collection of Hungarian art collector Károly
László. Besides the classic modern artists of the 20th
century such as József Rippl-Rónai, Vilmos Aba-Novák
and Pál, Molnár C, the greatest figures of the Bauhaus
have a significant part in the collection. Lajos Kassák’s
unique picture architectures can be found here just
like the graphics and photos of the world-wide famous
artist László Moholy-Nagy. The works of Victor Vasarely
are also included into the permanent exhibition.
Tegularium
The Tegularium is a brick collection that can be found
in the cellar of the Dubniczay Palace. It has unique
roof tiles and various types of bricks on display. The
exhibition showcases old tools for brick making and
the usage of clay-based building materials through the
years, starting from the Roman Age.

Laczkó Dezső Museum
The Laczkó Dezső Veszprém County Museum
presents the county to the world and the world
to the people of the county. They tell stories of the
past, present and future. The 330,000 items in the
collection of the museum depict the ethnography,
archaeology, history, creative arts and literary history,
and the numismatic collection is also significant.

Only about 1% of the collections of the museum can
be seen in the various exhibitions, the other 99% is
safely stored in boxes and drawers. A 20,000 item
collection of the total 300,000 can now be visited
in the Storage Exhibition. Visiting is possible by
appointment and with guiding.

Bakony House
The Bakony House is situated next to the Laczkó Dezső Museum and is one of the earliest Hungarian open
air ethnographic exhibitions. The building furnished
with artefacts from the museum offers the visitors an
insight into the peasant culture typical of our region.
Heroes’ Gate
The Heroes’ Gate was inaugurated in 1939 and
restored in 2013. In its exhibition, visitors cannot
only learn about the original function and history of
the Gate but also acquire some knowledge of local
history and about important landmark events from the
city’s past.
Fire Lookout Tower
The only tower of the Castle remaining from the
medieval times, the Fire Lookout Tower can be found
on the highest point of the city. It plays the tune of
Antal Csermák’s conscription music every hour. The
tower offers great views of the parts of Veszprém from
its circular balcony.

STARS IN NATURE
VESZPRÉM ZOO
In the picturesque Fejes Valley area we can see
traditional zoo animals such as the big cats from
exotic places, the enormous Kamchatka brown bears,
the colourful water birds and other unique animals
like the playful Madagascan lemurs and the Gelada
baboons, the funny tapirs, the ever curious meerkats
and the red panda couple.
The Africa Savannah enclosure, occupying a 15,000
m2 area on the Gulya Hill, enjoys the most popularity,
as visitors can observe ostriches, zebras, and a herd of
giraffes and the three members of the square lipped
rhino family. Meanwhile visitors can also rest on the
covered lookout tower above the enclosure.
The Chimpanzee World was built next to the Savannah
enclosure. At the moment two groups of chimpanzees
fill the house with life. In the inner area only a glass
panel separates the chimps and the visitors, while in
the outer enclosure a moat serves the same function.

stop at the petting zoo and have fun at the outdoor
and indoor playgrounds.

The Veszprém Valley offers numerous leisure
activities and is a real gem of Veszprém.
Walking hand in hand, going for a stroll,
having a rest on a comfortable bench, having
a coffee and a chat in the Historia Garden are
all possible here. Hungarian Folk Tales and
“Siege” playgrounds await the children. A
rising number of people find the area ideal for
their new passion, “nordic walking”.
The valley also attracts a range of people for
climbing, others prefer to mount their bikes or
put roller skates on. Embraced by shady trees
and alleys we can find monuments from the Árpád Era such as the Margaret Ruins, the ruins
of the Veszprém Valley Nunnery and the Jesuit
Church.
The Veszprém Valley offers a wilde range of
programmes throughout the year: varied events,
concerts, all-day programmes for families,
folksdance and exhibitions.

STROLL AND ROLL
LEISURE AND ACTIVITY IN THE VESZPRÉM VALLEY
The city of hills and valleys shaped by the Séd Brook invites
everyone for walks, strolls with the loved one or pleasant
chats in a café. This can now be enjoyed outside the city
centre, in the natural environment as well.
Veszprém and its surroundings offer an excellent ground for
those enjoying cycle tours. Veszprém can be approached by
bike from two directions: one route starts from where the
No73 road reaches Veszprém and leads to the city centre,
and on the other one we can cycle down to Lake Balaton,
to Balatonalmádi from the city centre. Great news for the
cycling community: thanks to the successful project fund
applications, path system has been expanded with several
kilometres and the connections with the nearby settlements
have also been improved. Now you can go as far as Nemesvámos on a two-wheeler.

HISTORICAL ATMOSPHERE,

Once you have walked around the streets of
Veszprém, it is worth putting on comfortable
clothes and discover the neighbouring areas on
foot, by bike or by car.
In Balatonalmádi we recommend a visit to
the fortress church from the Árpád era in
the Vörösberény part to those interested in
architecture, while children should see the old
375 steam engine that used to run here. We can
raise our adrenalin levels at the Balatonfűzfő
Bobsleigh.
Heading west we reach the capital of the
northern shore Balatonfüred, where we can
take a walk in the Reform era or stroll along the
Tagore Promenade.
