The Office Desk 2 JUNIOR COLLEGE News The 1‐2‐3 Magic and Emotion Coaching ‐ “A great program that should be run each year for parents!” This program aims to teach parents how to deal with their children’s difficult behaviour by using an easy‐to‐learn and easy‐to‐use signalling system. The signalling system requires the parent to use less talk and less emotion. The signalling system is clear and consistent which in turn encourages the development of children’s ability to manage their emotional reactions to parental boundaries (or emotional competency). This course also offers an insight on how children develop and why they react in certain ways and also helps parents to emotion coach their children through difficult circumstances so they in turn learn to self soothe. Adam Bull, Samuel Holgate, Nathanael Taylor and Nathan Ford enjoyed an action‐packed game of futsal last Friday afternoon Square Spelling Bee Competition Students in Years 3, 4 & 5 have been selected to participate in the Station Square Spelling Bee Competition. HEAT 1 will be held on Saturday 17 August. Pop along and show your support and encouragement. First Place — GIDEON—150 points Second Place — JOSHUA—146 points Third Place — DANIEL—138 points The Carnival was a very successful day. We had perfect weather and almost 100% participation. Students sprinted like the wind in the morning races and enjoyed a variety of field events, ranging from trike racing to frisbee discus, during the middle session. Students were exhausted by lunch time and most classes had a quiet afternoon. Only 2 of the older classes spent the afternoon participating in ball games and tug of war. Overall an excellent day was had by all. Special THANK YOU to: Teachers and Teacher Aides – helping all the events run so smoothly Mr Fern – organising the Prep and Year 1 Field Events; Miss Cook – helping with early morning set up; Mr Kielly and Mr Sutcliffe – preparing the tracks and helping with set up; Admin Staff – distribution of notes, etc., and answering all the parent enquiries; P & F – donating field event class prizes and Parents and Relatives – supporting and encouraging the students Year 4/5 Camp at QCCC Mapleton Monday 9 to Wednesday 11 September, 2013. The girls were placed into two teams and competed against 17 other teams from schools around Hervey Bay and Maryborough. The competition consisted of team and individual problem solving, estimating, mental calculations and a general knowledge section. Both teams scored extremely well, only narrowly missing out on a place. All 6 students are to be congratulated for their enormous effort and the way in which they represented the College with pride. To the parents who ensured their students were able to attend and drove them to Hervey Bay – a huge thank you, without your support these events would not be possible. Homework Club Study Buddies (Mondays 2nd Break, in X2), Maths Tutoring (Tuesdays 3:15‐4:00pm, in J1) and Homework Club (Thursdays 3:15‐4:30pm, in M19) will again be operating this term. Their multimedia and interactive approach to contemporary Shakespeare and Australian Identity was engaging and very enjoyable. Congratulations As this RAP goes to print, Daniel Lloyd (Year 9) is in Brazil, representing Australia for futsal. We wish him all the best as he proudly represents Riverside Christian College on the other side of the world. Secret Men’s Business This bonding weekend, for Year 9 boys and their dads/ significant males in their lives, will be held at the Aldershot Scout Grounds from Friday 23 August – Sunday 25 August. Next Friday, August 23 is our Jeans For Genes Day fundraiser and students may wear jeans and free dress to school. Students must also wear enclosed shoes and hats. Middle College News 4 SENIOR COLLEGE News YEAR 12 BOYS HPV RACE @ BOYNE ISLAND With a new bike and brave determination the Yr 12 boys set out to gain some experience and training while competing at the inaugural Boyne Island HPV racetrack. Two team members were unable to make the trip, but the boys were keen to give the race a shot. They quickly sized up the competition and realised that they were well positioned after winning the qualifying laps and taking pole position for the race start. Pumped, they surged ahead of the field and at one stage were 4 laps ahead of their closest rival. They topped the highest recorded speed at 53klms and the fastest lap of 3:12. But then disaster struck, the bike began to slow and became harder to even reach lap times of 5 mins. They were dropping behind and the pressure was on. The bike was pulled into the pits and operated on and the fault found. Back on the track again and able to reach their top speed, they pressed on to regain the laps they had lost. It was a close finish and very tense, but without enough time left on the clock they did not catch up. 8 hours of intense excitement, the team were pleased with their efforts having gained 2nd Place for the day. Congratulations to the team and thanks to the staff who assisted with the training and encouragement to make the journey to Boyne Island. Liam—A Young Star Lucy —Behind the Lens For the second consecutive year, Biggenden photographer Lucy Kinbacher's skills have been rewarded with Most Points for a Student at this year's Ekka. With more than 1000 photographs, Lucy received a first, fourth and the acceptance of seven of her eight photographs. “It was a complete surprise to see my photo with a blue ribbon and the purple rosette next to it," the Riverside Christian College school captain said. After claiming the title last year as a maiden exhibitor, Lucy showed her skills through a range of animal, fruit and floral subject matter. The winning photo, a lime http://www.bond.edu.au/study‐at‐bond/scholarships/rsl being dropped into a fish tank, was a creative project for a school photography assignment, and was also the ‐youth/index.htm champion photograph at the Gin Gin and Teebar shows. “It did take a few attempts with the help of my brother but it was definitely worth it," she Well done Liam and all the best next term as you grow and said. The 16‐year old will not be eligible for the student section again but experience the Tommy Emmanuel sessions. will continue entering Queensland's biggest show. "To be acknowledged with some of the best photographs across the state is unbelievable." Successful in his application, Liam was awarded an Australian Government Arts grant, ’Creative Young Stars’. This award encourages and supports the high level achievement of students and young people throughout Australia. The grant will enable Liam to attend the Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Camp held next term. Leam applied for the grant after Riverside posted the details on our Facebook site. Check it out for yourself. EXPERIENCE A NEW CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE AT HOME In January 2014 students from over 20 countries around the world, will be arriving in Australia to study at local high schools for 2‐ 10 months. Opportunities exist for families to act as a host family, in a volunteer capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide international students with the chance to study and experience life in Australia. This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to international goodwill. If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and caring home environment, contact Student Exchange Australia New Zealand on 1300 135 331 . To learn more about this wonderful opportunity or the student exchange programs out of Australia visit: www.studentexchange.org.au/host‐a‐student Senior College News 5 News from the CHAPLAIN A NEW START part 2 Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”, Romans 6:23 “for the wages of sin is death, BUT the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” So what is the Solution? The gift of God, His Son Jesus Christ! The Justice of God demands a sacrifice for man’s sin. Jesus Christ became that sacrifice and paid the penalty for our sin at the cross. God is Holy and just so he could not let sin go unpunished, the disobedience of one man Adam caused all mankind to be under the curse of Sin‐ Death. So the divine solution to the problem was for God’s only Son, who was without sin, to become the payment for all mankind’s sin. Hebrews 9:26‐28 “Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that face judge‐ ment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him!” Jesus exchanged His righteousness, that is, His right standing with God, for all our sin. He took our place and took the punishment we deserved and exchanged that with His sinless life so that we may now stand before God without sin. Jesus bridged the gap between man and God. “God made Him (Jesus) who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 Mr Ross Harrold 16 August: BUSH DANCE Get your boots ready for our annual dance. 23 August: Glow In The Dark Night Dress in dark clothes so you can’t be spotted and we’ll see who can be most stealthy as we play games in the dark. 30 August: Team Olympics Whether you’re an athlete or mathlete come to our Olympic trials and see who’ll be crowned Olympic champions 2013! This will generate a letter to be sent to you explaining the procedure and associated costs?. Students can learn a string instrument, piano, voice, guitar or recorder. Due to co‐ordination and cognitive development of younger children, larger wind instruments, brass instruments or drums are not recommended. For the same reasons Mr Slater would not recommend starting to learn an instrument to a Prep aged student. Thanks for your support. Preparing students for a life of worth ... Not merely a life of work. News 9 General News Secret Men’s Business What is it, and why is this is important? “It’s not time to make a change, Just relax, take it easy. You’re still young, that’s your fault, There’s so much you have to know” Cat Stevens said it well and his ideas are still current, even 35 years later. In ”Father & Son” (on his Tea for the Tillerman album), his lyrics tell us of the divide that can develop between young and old, and we know this can start early. Year 9 marks the time when boys start to look for adult male role models beyond the simplistic hero worship of earlier days. It’s a time when they look for direction. Our program will include some activities in which sons and fathers/adults will take turns in exercising some mentoring or leadership for each other. We’ll have some structured conversation time, and some time just to relax and enjoy each other’s company in a beautiful setting. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD It is the time of year when we are again encouraging families to become involved in the ‘Operation Christmas Child’ project. This is overseen by Samaritan’s Purse; an international, interdenominational Christian Relief Organisation led by Franklin Graham. Operation Christmas Child encourages people of all ages to fill shoe boxes with toys and small gifts to be delivered to children who are victims of war, persecution, poverty, disease and natural disasters. Last year, 308,263 boxes were sent from Australia and New Zealand to countries such as Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. 1,900 boxes were sent from the Maryborough/Hervey Bay area. In 105 countries overall, 8 million children were blessed. Will you join us at Riverside this year to send even more boxes? You may like to fill a box at home, or students may enjoy filling one together as a class activity. Whose life will your shoe box change this year? IMPORTANT POINTS: If you wish to fill your own shoe box as a family, ready‐wrapped shoe boxes with the essential leaflet will be available at the office. Please remember to include $9 in the envelope or donate online. If you prefer to send in individual items to be packed at school, these may be placed in a box in your child’s classroom. Weekly suggestions: Wk 7 (19/8/13) ‐ Something to love. Wk 8 (26/8/13) ‐ Something special. Wk 9 (02/9/13) ‐ Monetary donation for school‐packed boxes. Wk 10 (9/9/13) ‐ A personal note, photo or any of the above. FINAL DATE: All boxes to be returned by WEDNESDAY 18 SEPTEMBER. This is an opportunity to build further connections and create good memories. River Side As a father, Cat sings: “I was once like you are now, and I know that it’s not easy”. This weekend will help. It will help both to better relate, better understand, better communicate. As teens, boys can experience a period where conflict is their central theme. They often reject the expectations, values and directions their male elders have embraced, placing them regularly at odds with one other. “I know I have to go” 23, 24 & 25 August. The winners are announced today and we will publish the results next newsletter. The children have been encouraged to vote for the one they think will win in the ‘Picture Book of the Year’ category. At this stage Riverside voting seems to be leaning towards ‘Lightning Jack’ and ‘Herman and Rosie’. But it’s not over until it’s over and ‘Sophie Scott Goes South’ is running a close third. A big thank you to our budding literary reviewers in Prep who have had the challenge to read and vote for their favourite book in the ‘Book of the Year – Early Childhood’ category. Prep C has been very impressed with ‘Too Many Elephants in the House’ by Ursula Dubosarsky and that book got their vote. Here is what some of the students had to say about what they liked about the book ‐ "I liked that he was going to ship the Elephants back to Africa" ‐ Hunter "I liked that Eric made a house for the elephants" ‐ Xander "I liked that the elephants were so helpful" ‐ Josanna "I like it because it is a funny book" ‐ Payton The other two Prep classes had a different point of view. Prep F loved them all but the class favourite was ‘Mirooccol’ by Christine Harris with ‘The Terrible Suitcase’ by Emma Allen coming a close second. ‘The Terrible Suitcase’ got a resounding thumbs up from Prep G as their class favourite, receiving over 70% of the votes. I wonder which Prep class (if any) will pick the winner? BUILDING NEWS & UPDATES Stay tuned! LEGAL STUDIES NEWS Construction has now reached N15. Therefore, until January 2014 this classroom is not available for regular use and classes have been re‐timetabled to suit. It is a very exciting stage of our building program and although we may find construction an inconvenience for the present, the future extension will be a blessing to our College community. August 15, a guest speaker visited students in 11/12 Legal Studies. Mr Joel Blane is an Associate Solicitor for Bell Dixon Butler Lawyers of Hervey Bay. He informed them about careers in the fields of law and policing. He also answered many questions about legal issues that they are studying: civil law, mediation, human rights and criminal matters. The students were very grateful for his willingness to share his insights. ‐ Mrs Susan Pryor College Notices 16 NEWS & EVENTS Paul Shaw—Proprietor ‐ Southern X Graphics WEB SITE: www.southernxgraphics.com.au Mob: 0424 011 428 ENGLISH AND DRAMA NEWS On August 14, students in Years 6 to 8 participated in the ‘Grin and Tonic’ production of ‘Sunburn.’ The play was about a professor and his unfortunate assistant, who arrived to present an answer to the question 'Who is Australia?' It didn't take too long before the assistant's nagging questions interrupted the professor's nonsense declarations. Together, they gradually stepped further and further back in time to uncover Australia's hidden histories. Students in Years 9 to 12 took part in the ‘Grin and Tonic’ production of ‘I Am Macbeth.’ In this text, prophecy and pressure mounted on the doomed Scottish king, and our students decided how the tragedy unfolded. It was great to immerse our students in these interactive multimedia events. Thank you to everyone who assisted with this awesome opportunity for our students. -Mrs Susan Pryor IT was a feather in the cap of one so young when Simon Kinbacher made his cattle judging debut as the associate judge of the Droughtmaster breed at the 2013 Royal Queensland Show. Simon is a Droughtmaster and Brahman breeder, accompanied John Atkinson in assessing more than 60 of the breed's finest. “It was a high ‐quality line up, and such a wonderful opportunity to judge at Queensland's most iconic show," Simon said. Simon has been successful in the Junior Judges competition and took the Champion All Rounder award at the 2013 Rockhampton Show. "I enjoy judging cattle and I found it fun to judge the Droughtmasters with a person like Mr Atkinson," he said.
