WHAT IS AN EARLY CHILDHOOD
INTERVENTION ASSISTANT?
This certificate/degree prepares individuals for teaching
basic academic and life processes skills to students
with disabilities. Theory and practice includes the basic
principles of educational and developmental psychology;
the art of observing, teaching and guiding young
children; planning and administration of developmentally
appropriate inclusive educational activities; school
safety and health issues; and the social and emotional
foundations of early care and education.
• Demonstrate basic knowledge of laws
and regulations pertaining to and
protecting children with disabilities and
their families
• Describe the typical child development
milestones of children from birth to
adolescence and identify the strengths
and special needs of the child
• Describe the developmental assessment
process and outline its role in identifying,
planning and intervening for a child with
special needs
• Demonstrate an understanding of
the purpose and intent of an inclusive
environment that supports the whole
child while meeting the individual needs
of children with disabilities

The Associate of Science degree in Early Childhood Intervention Assistant will be

designed to coordinate the
student’s occupational onthe-job training with related
instruction in work-related
skills, career planning, resume
development, and interview
techniques. Students enrolled
in this course must maintain
paid or voluntary employment
related to the subject
area. Determination of the
appropriate work experience
course is made by the
instructor, with input from the
student, based upon several
factors, including the number
of hours worked during
the semester, occupational
program requirements, and
type of work in which the
student is engaged.
