Spring - School of Allied Health Professions
Newsletter of the Health Administration Alumni/ae Association Spring 2009 Message from the Chair Stephen S. Mick, Ph.D. Arthur Graham Glasgow Professor and Chair I am pleased to inform you that the Vice President for Health Sciences at VCU, Dr. Sheldon Retchin, has made a decision that the Department of Health Administration will remain PERMANENTLY in the School of Allied Health Professions. This is a major step, and it builds on the earlier decision to return Health Administration provisionally to Allied Health until which time the School of Public Health was restarted and developed. Now, we will NOT be moving into Public Health. We can now get down to the real work that needs to be done, particularly as Health Administration faces a new set of challenges that the national economy is forcing on us. Second, because we have accomplished this major step of arranging the permanent home of the Department in the School of Allied Health where we have flourished over the years and because of my own professional aspirations to return to teaching and research, I have submitted my resignation as Chair of the Department effective December 31, 2009. I will remain as a “normal” professor, part of the teaching corps, and will devote the rest of my career to the study of health care organizations. The Dean has accepted my letter, and as I write you this note, a committee is being formed to search for my successor. Third, and this is really bad news, one of our stellar faculty members, Dr. Gloria Bazzoli, has just recently fallen ill. For those of you who do not know her, she is our health economist and, indeed, one of the most respected health economists in the United States. Her prognosis is good, so we hope to have Dr. Bazzoli back actively with us in the Fall semester. Fourth, we are unfortunately losing two other faculty members. Dr. Kelly Devers, Associate Professor, has submitted her resignation effective July 1 of this year, and she will be taking a new position at the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C., where she will be a Senior Research Fellow. Dr. Cathy Bradley, Professor, will be leaving the Department effective May 1 of this year to take on the chair position of a new department in the VCU School of Medicine that will eventually be part of VCU’s School of Public Health. Both faculty colleagues will be sorely missed. A search committee is being formed to search for new faculty. Fifth, on a more positive note, we have just welcomed Professor Larry Palmer to the Department. He has a joint appointment as a professor of law at the College of William and Mary where he teaches courses in health law and policy. Between VCU and William and Mary, Professor Palmer is establishing a Center for Health Policy and the Law. Professor Palmer received his law degree from Yale Law School, and has held faculty positions at "programs remain strong, and the the University of Virginia, Georgetown University, the University of Louisville, Cornell Univer- remaining faculty committed as sity, and Villanova Law School. Professor Palmer is a valuable addition to the faculty and will strongly as ever to the highest possible performance in the classbring fresh ideas and energy to the Department. So, the news is mixed. However, the programs remain strong, and the remaining faculty room" committed as strongly as ever to the highest possible performance in the classroom. We will weather the current storm as we have weathered previous ones. My goal is to “tee up” everything in the best possible way so that my successor can move the Department to the next level with new energy and vision. I hope this message finds you all well and weathering the economic storm. In This Issue Virginia Commonwealth University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action institution. It was in that room, I would receive the gift of insight, knowledge and the passion for my healthcare career that I would not truly learn to appreciate for many years to come. At that point of my career, I had experienced the highs and lows of a career in Health Administration and had traveled to three states to follow a path of career advancement to employment more than 500 miles from that hill in Richmond. I could have never predicted the opportunities that would come following those years at MCV and the gratitude for having a career where I know that I do make a positive difference in the lives of the people that I serve. David Masterson CEO Sampson Regional Medical Center Clinton, NC Feeling somewhat disconnected from the school and remorseful about not showing my gratitude through my involvement with the Department of Health Administration, I contemplated how I might contribute to the future of a career that I learned to appreciate. Networking with classmates and making contact with friends in the Richmond market, I learned of the Alumni Executive Committee (thanks Karen Cameron) and the role this group of executives continues to play in an advisory capacity to the Department. I asked to be involved and was fortunately accepted by nomination to join the committee four years ago. In my involvement, I have found a new level of respect for the dedicated educators that continue the traditions of the Department of Health Administration and the challenges and obstacles that they have to overcome in their commitment to teaching. I’ve been asked for my input with regard to the Marketing Curriculum currently being taught to the students. I’ve been able to forge new friendships with Alumni/ae that I only knew by name and reputation. I’ve been in discussions about preserving the heritage of our program through the School of Allied Health Professions and considering the merits of relocating to a new set of offices on Broad Street. I’ve known the relief of learning that the Department would remain in its present location, The Sheltering Arms Hospital, which was a dream for program leaders for so long. Nothing is permanent, but we hope this is long term. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a voice for the graduates of our esteemed programs. Now, more than twenty years since my graduation from the MHA program, I have a renewed pride in the top ranked program in Health Administration and our goals to be recognized as such. With that pride comes a clearer understanding that the strong foundation of our heritage in the Department of Health Administration relies on the alumni and the integrity that we all continue to demonstrate as leading healthcare executives in this nation. Healthcare remains dynamic and our Alma Mater needs our support and involvement. This is the time to pull together and make your contributions through time on committee or as a mentor, through financial commitment, or just letting the leaders of our program know that they have our support and appreciation. Please consider giving back to the Department that opened doors for all of us. The symbolism behind Sheltering Arms reminds me that I was welcomed into a program that continues to provide me a secure career and self-actualization. It is in giving back that I find the latter, and it is never too late. Cardwell Comments Spring 2009 Page 15 HAD Program News (continued) PhD News (continued) MHA News Ibrahim Awad Ibrahim, M.D., Ph.D. 1955-2008 Charles Shasky, Ph.D. M y friend and classmate, Ibrahim (PhD 97), along with wife and children traveled to Egypt for a vacation this past August to visit his parents, brother and family, and other family and friends. While there, Ibrahim suffered a heart attack and died. Ibrahim was buried in Egypt alongside his ancestors. I had talked to Ibrahim before they vacationed to Egypt and he expressed to me that things were going well at home and work. He enjoyed doing practical research in urology at Beaumont Hospital in Troy, MI, and told me that during his physician training in Egypt he was focused on rural primary health care and delivery systems and what he was doing now was not possible back home and that he'd never thought he would be working in the area of urology research. He was happy that his children were progressing nicely at school. He loved his home that was very close to Beaumont Hospital, where he worked. Also, we talked about plans for the future. Having been his class mate, office mate, colleague on projects, and fellow debater on health care and medicine, we discussed cardiac disease and problems of delivering efficient and effective care. He had even developed and mapped out an organization theory for cardiac care based on theories blended from family structure theory. His sudden death from a heart attack came to his family and me as a complete surprise. I am very saddened at the loss of my good friend. I will miss discussing Middle East culture, health care methods and systems, theory, politics, and yes religion. He taught me a great deal about the proper practice of Islam and I also taught him a great deal about being a good Lutheran. Together we found in the aforementioned topics many areas in common and where we differed we openly and honestly explored the roots and reasons for those differences. He thoroughly enjoyed a good debate. That's one of the many things I liked about him in addition to his desire and action to help others at all times. His greatest pride was his family, he enjoyed life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, dearly loved his friends and colleagues from the Grant House, and represented himself and all those associated with him splendidly. His wife and three children have since returned to Michigan to attend to affairs. His wife didn't say what their future plans were other than to attend to paying off the house, dealing with the two children getting back to school and the third going to college. She didn't know their long range plans—stay in Troy, MI or move back to Egypt or Morocco to be with their relatives. I will always have a hard time believing my friend is gone and am sorry to be the one bringing you this sad news. This class was among the most diverse with 38% of those entering considered minority students. The Class of 2011 has completed their first semester and are well into the second. There has been some attrition and currently there are 26 students who are looking forward to becoming upper classmen and welcoming the next class. MHA Class of 2012 We are well into the admission cycle for the class that will graduate in 2012 and expect a class of comparable size to that of last year. Application rate was similar to the last couple of years though the diversity of applicants varied from prior years. We look forward to entering a full class in August 2009. Spring Seminars and May 2009 Commencement On April 2 and 3 the Class of 2009 returned for Orals and Spring Seminar. All students successfully presented their management studies. Cardwell Comments Spring 2009 Message from Former MHA Program Director MHA News (continued) Message (continued) Family and Awards Day The MHA Classes of 2010 and 2011 have combined two annual events usually held separately by and for the students. The students began having a family day a few years ago – usually held in tandem with alumni weekend. They showcased their work and the Grant House, inviting their families and faculty. And before leaving for residency, the second year class is recognized, with the announcement and celebration of academic awards at the end of the didactic part of the curriculum. This year the 2 events are being combined and the event is being held April 26 at the Holiday Garden Inn to accommodate both classes, faculty and family members. Many thanks to Peter Marmerotein, guest speaker, and the CJW Medical Center for sponsorship. Residency Placement and an Invitation to Participate Due to the economy, this year turned out to be a challenge in identifying organizations that felt able to support an administrative resident in the coming year. All students have secured positions for 2009-2010. We greatly appreciate those who continue to support the hallmark experience that distinguishes our MHA Program from our competitors. We would like to invite you and others to participate in the residency process. If you are interested, please contact me ([email protected]) as we will begin the 2010-2011 placement process in August. I will add you to our contact list! Best wishes! Dolores Page 16 Ken White, PhD, FACHE A s you know, Dr. Dolores Clement assumed the directorship of the MHA program on July 16, 2008, following my decision to step down. I am certain that the program will build on its considerable strengths and achieve even higher levels of distinction and recognition with Dr. Clement again at its helm. When I began as the Assistant Director in 1994, she was the Director. It was a pleasure and honor to be at the helm "on loan." Making the decision to step down as the Program Director was difficult, particularly in view of the number of talented and energetic professionals whom I consider both colleagues and friends. But I realized that after nearly 15 years it was time to focus on different aspects of my career. In short, thanks to you, I achieved the goals I set out to accomplish in 1994. I am grateful to all of you who coached and mentored students, supported activities and initiatives in the classroom, and represented our Department in small and big ways. One of the best parts of leading a world-class program is the link to its alumni/ae. I was always able to count on you. I respect the work of those alumni/ae, faculty, and staff who came before me to make our Programs renowned. The programs will continue to flourish as best practices under the leadership of Dr. Clement. Dozens of superb professionals contributed to the MHA and MSHA programs during my tenure, and space prevents me from thanking them individually by name. Special mention is appropriate for Steve Mick, who directed resources to support the Program and Suzanne Havasy, whose undying commitment as a partner in the Program’s development and management was a daily inspiration. Good luck and best wishes. VCU MGMA Spring Seminar Shefali Chudgar and James Drinan (MHA Class of 2011) O n February 16, 2009, the VCU MGMA/ACMPE Student Network held its annual Spring Seminar, "Physician-Administrator Relationships:A Dual Perspective." The discussion took place at the MCV Alumni House and Paul A. Gross Conference Center and featured Dr. Mark Bladergroen, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital (MSHA 2005), and Mr. Mark Gordon, Executive Vice President at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center. The two speakers shared their various experiences regarding decision making, communication, and quality of care delivered from the viewpoint of physicians and administrators. Over fifty individuals, including first and second year MHA students, MSHA students, PhD students, faculty, and staff attended the seminar. This event would not have been possible without the sponsorship of VCU Health Executives Student Association (HESA). We would like to thank Dr. Bladergroen and Mr. Gordon for volunteering their time to share their valuable insights into the dynamics of physician-administrator relationships. The Student MGMA Committee, Shefali Chudgar (MHA 11), James Drinan (MHA 11), Richard Green (MHA 11), Priyanka Dhingra (MHA 10), and Bryan Mallory (MHA 10), would like to thank everyone for attending and making this event a success. HIMSS Student Event a Success Shankara Ettigi (MHA 10) O n November 18, 2008 the HIMSS Student Chapter was pleased to host a kick-off event with a very special guest, the Secretary of Technology for the State of Virginia, Aneesh Chopra. Topics discussed ranged from Virginia’s efforts in spreading access to technology into rural areas of Virginia, to the current push for a National Health Information Network and the importance of administrative buy-in to local Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIO). With a captive audience of upwards of 50 students and faculty in the Grant House’s Riverside Room, the discussion went on for one hour, including an engaging question and answer session. On behalf of the HIMSS Student Chapter, we would like to thank the Health Executive Student Association (HESA) and HAD faculty and staff for their support in making this event a success. Thanks also goes out to Dr. Ramesh Shukla whose efforts were critical in establishing VCU’s HIMSS Student Chapter. Special thanks is also extended to Michael Matthews and MedVirginia for sponsorship of the event! Note: HIMSS Student Chapter – Established in 2001 under the guidance and generosity of Dr. Ramesh Shukla and HIMSS President & CEO Stephen Lieber. The VCU HIMSS Student Chapter was the first of its kind in the US. Cardwell Comments Spring 2009 Page 20 Department (HAD) News National Cancer Institute (NCI) Grant T he majority of married American workers receive their health insurance through either their own employment or that of their employed spouse. In her $3 million National Cancer Institute (NCI) grant funded research study, Dr. Cathy Bradley, is using that fact to examine the effects of the source of health insurance – own employment or spouse’s employment - on treatment decisions and health outcomes for married women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Implemented in August 2007, Dr. Bradley and her research team are making steady progress toward the goal of enrolling 440 employed married women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. The Research team anticipates reaching their enrollment goal during the fall of 2010. Study participants are interviewed three times. The first interview occurs within 60 days of diagnosis, surgery or first chemotherapy. This interview establishes the pre-diagnosis baseline. The second interview is conducted during the course of treatment and the final interview occurs nine months after diagnosis. Interview questions include demographic characteristics, health insurance information, work history, job satisfaction, job attachment, comorbidities, depression assessment (CESD), and health status (SF-36). Additionally, participant medical records are reviewed to extract treatment information. The study results will make contributions to both patient care and healthcare policy discussions. Physicians choose the best course of treatment assuming that patients can dedicate themselves exclusively to treatment and recovery. Evidence suggesting that the source of health insurance influences health outcomes, through labor supply incentives, could encourage physicians to take account of patient job demands in prescribing treatments and to try to "employer-based health insurance is reduce inference with patient’s the prominent form of health insurance for working adults in the United work, which would lead to better health outcomes from completing States." treatment. For example, a woman who will not be available for adjuvant therapy, because the time away from work, may receive a greater survival benefit from a mastectomy than a lumpectomy. There is also the potential to understand health care and work behavior responses to incentives created by the source of health insurance. On the policy front, employer-based health insurance is the prominent form of health insurance for working adults in the United States. Dr. Bradley remarked that incentives for employees to trade-off health care treatment and work have not been studied, yet may be critical to making informed policy decisions about employment and insurance issues faced by individuals undergoing cancer treatment.
