KIZITO’S DIARY
MONDAY
There is a signpost I
saw in someone’s sitting
room to the effect that
visitors make them
happy, some by coming
while others by going
away! I wanted to put
the same sign at the
entrance to our home
though only a bit modified to read: Children
make us happy, sometimes by coming home
but other times by going
back to school!
TUESDAY
It is not an exaggeration
that the person who invented boarding school
is the parents’ best
friend. The idea that your wife’s brats can be
taken away for chunks of three months, three
times a year not just for safe custody but for
a likely educational experience, where they
can actually learn some skills is a godsend. It
doesn’t matter how much it costs, it is worth
every coin!
WEDNESDAY
That is the reason why however difficult and
stressful it is to look for school fees, I gladly
do so, knowing that the rewards are great!
I am willing to borrow, pledge the jalopy as
security and even do without DSTV and airtime for months just so that Laura’s children
go back, where they belong, to school and on
time!
THURSDAY
It is a good thing that the country is moving
away from manual functions to automated
ones since things move faster and the human
element is eliminated. Except, of course, at
Entebbe Airport, where
automation has resulted
into more manual functions! You get in and
pick your ticket nicely
from a machine. However, to pay requires the
assistance of at least two
human beings and sometimes to exit requires
another!
FRIDAY
Laura has now imposed
restrictions on how close
we can come to each other. Her argument is that
because of the rampant
red eyes disease people
have been stopped from
shaking hands in order to
minimize the spread. If a
handshake is prohibited, she argues, anything
that goes beyond the elbow is not to be contemplated until further notice!
SATURDAY
Mourinho has helped another third rate
team win the Champions League ahead of
more deserving teams. I wonder what would
happen if he was made the coach of Uganda
Cranes! Maybe we could qualify for the World
Cup and even win it! It is now less than one
month to the World Cup in South Africa and I
still have no tickets!
SUNDAY
We need to say a very brief prayer for some
little rain to cool us down a little bit and
control the dust! But not too much rain to
cause mountain Elgon to separate into two
and cause problems for the people. We also
need to say a big prayer for elections in Mukono between a reverend father and a not so
reverend mother!

World Cup songs for the last
five years
For World Cup in Germany
2006, The Time Of Our Lives
was recorded by multinational
operatic pop quartet Il Divo and
American R&B singer Toni Braxton as the official theme song.
The 2002 World Cup in Korea
and Japan chose the song
Boom, a techno song by American singer Anastacia.
For the 1998 World Cup in
France, the official song was
La Copa de la Vida by Puerto
2
3
Rican singer Ricky Martin and
the official anthem was La Cour
des Grands by Senegal’s Youssou
N’Dour and Belgian Axelle Red.
We Are the Champions written by Freddie Mercury for
Queen’s 1977 album News of the
World was official theme song
for 1994 FIFA World Cup in the
US.
For the 1990 FIFA World Cup
in Italy, Un’estate italiana by
Italian artists Edoardo Bennato
and Gianna Nannini was chosen.
The original title was To Be
Number One.

OR this World Cup,
Shakira recorded
Waka Waka (This
Time For Africa)
with South Africa’s Freshly
Ground. As you may have
surmised, having read this
much, everyone seems to
have an opinion on the
matter. The net has been
awash with criticism being
lobbed her way because she
wouldn’t know a thing about
Africa. In my oft-humble
opinion, I’m with the school
of thought that figures the
World Cup is an opportunity
for different cultures to converge as one. I am, however,
slightly miffed by the words
Waka Waka (borrowed from
Sangalewa from Cameroon,
a West African marching
song). Calling it uninspired
would be teetering on the
edge of charity. Siima of the
Early Edition seems to love it.
However, she acknowledges
that it may be because she
likes Shakira and is a HUGE
fan of Freshly Ground. KK,
her co-host doesn’t care for it
one bit while Yvonne of the
Magazine Show does not like
that it takes her to the days of
Dikula.
On the flip side, there’s
Coca-Cola’s theme song:
K’naan’s Waving Flag. I’d
be fibbing if I claimed I felt
nothing for Somali Pirate
sympathiser’s song. It’s awesome and certainly evokes
such a reaction as to feature
prominently in a Sunday sermon decrying secular music.
Yvonne likes that she can
sing along to it, and let’s be
honest, with the amount
of airplay it has received, it
would be pretty shocking
if a baby’s first words did
not feature a lyric from the
song. KK feels that the song
did K’naan no favours and
“killed all his street cred and
gave us skinny guys with big
foreheads no props in the
process”. Siima was into the
song initially, but is falling
out of love with it, and
not with her fair share of
scars from the relationship, “I’m sick of it.
And I have beef with
K’naan. Did he have
to go all the way to
Spain to get someone to
duet with? He could have
just nipped across the
border and asked Chance
Nalubega/Michael Ross or
one of their ilk?” Years of
experience have it that when
someone uses the word ilk, it
ends an argument.
Kelly “I used to be a third
of Destiny’s Child then I
grew up”. Rowland carries
MTN’s theme song of choice,
Everywhere You Go. Not on
her own, mind you. Someone
figured it would be really cool
if they threw in some 2Face,
Chameleone and some guys,
who just happened to be
in the studio at the time.
I like Kelly Rowland and I
think Chameleone has some
decent stuff time and again.
I don’t mind 2Face and I
sure as heck sympathise with
flukers, and yet, this song just
doesn’t gel with me at all. It
could be that the version I
got my hands on was the “we
don’t care if you listen” mix of
the song, but put next to its
peers (those other songs up
there), it’s like the little noisy
sibling you don’t want to
carry with you in public.
Siima could not be reached
for a comment, owing to
some trauma induced from
the revelation that Kamili and
Kelly have a song together.
KK thinks it was an experiment gone wrong by a
producer, then again he also
thinks a collabo between
Lady Gaga and Yossou
N’dour would have been way
better than all three songs.
Yvonne is more sympathetic
and says the song makes her
proud to be a Ugandan.
In case you are scanning
the page for Akon’s Oh
Africa, don’t bother, it is
not a World Cup song… it’s
a Pepsi song. And not just
any Pepsi song, it features
Racheal K with loads of colour. It would have been cool
to have on the list though.
So the final verdict, which
is THE definitive world
cup song? Shakira’s Waka,
K’naan’s Flag or Kelly and
Company’s, er, song? To be
honest, K’naan’s song, far as
I can tell has elicited more of
a reaction than the others. If
you don’t like it, tough. The
rest of us will be here waving
flags. (yes, there’s a bias).
“Jo’burg is the official host city of the World Cup”
