Lighter show of prime cattle, young bulls similar trade to last week with more premium grade but very few black and white bulls. Good show of premium heifers and steers similar trade. Continental cows good trade as were half of the dairy culls but leaner types harder to sell. Schools start next week so we should see a better trade for lean cows! Settle farmers John & James Dugdale took the Jack Eddleston trophy home after selling their 31 litres pedigree heifers at £1880 to Redmayne’s of Samlesbury. Another father and son team from Eldroth saw David & George Whitewell take £1820 for their 1st prize cow which went to Tom Green of Wigan. P Knowles of Kendal was next highest price at £1660 to JJ & JD Graves, Carlisle. The trade was generally much slower than the last three weeks with lots of respectable heifers between £1200-£1400. There is a lot of enthusiasm around the ring but we really do need some more money into farmer’s bank accounts. A run of long dated incalf heifers sold above expectations making up to £1120 to David Shuttleworth. Bulling heifers were a mixed bag and some smart weaned calves from Maurice Johnson at £420 were nicely sold. Next week is Westmorland Show we are expecting 20 milkers but no youngstock or dispersals DUGDALE NUTRITION DAIRY SHOW Incorporating the Jack Eddleston Farm Feeds Memorial Trophy For the Best Newly Calved Pedigree Heifer Thursday 1st September 2016 Judge: N Forshaw Vendor Jack Eddleston Memorial Trophy H M Dugdale & Son, Stackhouse Class1 Best Newly Calved Heifer st 1 H Tatham, Fence nd 2 P Knowles, New Hutton rd 3 J, CH & JG Bland, Silverdale Class2 Best Newly Calved Pedigree Heifer st 1 H M Dugdale & Son, Stackhouse nd 2 J & M Singleton & Sons, Goosnargh rd 3 R H Close, Starbotton Class 3 Best Newly Calved Cow st 1 G W Whitwell Ltd, Austwick nd 2 G W Whitwell ltd, Austwick rd 3 G & M Dakin & Sons, Sawley Class 4 – Best In-Calf Cow or Heifer st, nd rd 1 2 ,3 RH & D E Parker, Newton Gisburn’s Dairy Team £ Purchaser 1880 Redmayne 1550 1660 1300 F Wrathall 1880 1600 1580 Redmayne Graves Redmayne 1580 1500 Hill & Davies T & M Green CALVES A Angus x Blk & White British Blue Charolais X Hereford x Limousin Simmental x Bulls Top price (£) 352 Andy Lambert 158 R, G & M Falshaw 480 RH & JS Vickery 340 JE & SM Seedall 260 Andy Lambert 440 M Schofield 325 DW & BL Mattinson Welsh Black 195 NW & JM Coulthurst &Son Ave (£) 259 53 367 340 173 307 325 Heifers Top price (£) 288 Andy Lambert 385 A Bowker 380 JC Lees 155 P Thompson 370 J Whalley & Sons 352 DW Shuttleworth Ave (£) 199 278 334 155 231 310 195 Continental 352 Native 195 Ave (£) Heifers Top price (£) Ave (£) STIRKS Bulls Top price (£) A Angus x 450 JS & KA Whitaker 399 400 F Pilling 369 Blk & White 300 D Nutter 184 Blonde 590 NM Breaks 590 British Blue 765 G Pickup 602 640 J & JA Tyrer 513 Charolais X 570 NM Breaks 498 Highland x 290 M Schofield 290 Limousin 680 WR Mason 604 400 WJ Pennington 378 Simmental x 330 CI Dewhurst 330 Auctioneer Rachel Capstick 321 calves and stirks today with 48 Blue bulls between £180 and £480 selling to regulars, locals and buyers from as far afield as Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Wales! 35 Blue heifers from £160 to £385 were generally less money than last week as arable men still busy. 98 black and white bulls – only the best above £100 today. Angus bulls remain good to sell. Blue and Limousin bullocks and nice cow making sorts of heifers got away well but some others straight off their mothers would look value for money today. We had a great show of pedigree heifers with Philip Critchley, Wrea Green taking the Champion and Reserve places. His champion made £1900 to Richard Clayton and the Reserve Champion made £1920 to David Walmsley, Downham. Philips average for 4 heifers was £1845. Malcolm Fell had a great show of 8 topping at £1740 and £1710. G W Whitwell took 1st and 2nd places in the cow class selling to Davis at £1550 and and £1500 twice with all three going to Hill & Davis, Wrexham. Non registered winner was J G Hall selling at £1500 to Wick Williams. Trade for second quality heifers was more of a challenge with a whole raft of usable types from £1290 to £1350. In-calf heifers from Angela Middleton, Wigton were well bid for and she has established a good reputation from regular bidders for what can only be described as cracking heifers. They peaked at £1290 to D Shuttleworth with five others over £1200. Bulling heifers were a mixed show but Philip Baldwin, Brindle had two away at £800 each to T & C Robinson. Heifer calves were the trade of the day with David Mattinson averaging £295 for three. NEXT WEEK is the usual weekly sale and we expect 25 to 30 milkers. Lambs, however, a better than anticipated trade, especially meated and farm assured lambs. Running at 185 p/kg for the first half of the sale but then dropped off as quality dwindled. There was a distinct lack of well meated prime lambs this morning – those that were sold well enough in the 190pences, let’s see if we can get more nicely fleshed 40-45kg lambs next Saturday – they are what is wanted! Breeding ewes next. Correct ewes sold to a decent trade. Shearlings were as expected. Better sorts of Texels could do £130-£150, others generally £100-£120, Mules similar. Swaledale shearlings from Andrew Atkinson sold to a packed ring topping at £122. Today was our second show and sale of both Mule and Continental gimmer lambs kindly sponsored by Carrs Billington and judged by Peter Fox (schedule below). The general concensus of expert opinion was that the Mule gimmer trade in Gisburn today compared favourably to other centres in the North of England during these past couple of weeks. The best Continental gimmers got away very well. Outwith the show, highlights included pure Texels from Keith Parker to £260, Rouge from Mrs Capstick (no relation) to £112! Tom Brass from Appleby topped at £74 for his run of Lleyn gimmers. Some second quality gimmers would actually be better sold in the prime or store sections. Store lambs were simply a right trade. The new penning system encouraged vendors to show in bigger lots and this was well received by buyers. A massive thanks to all the staff today who worked very hard indeed to make things run as smoothly as possible. The new unloading system worked much better but, please please do not abandon vehicles on the docks! Joss Lancaster £340, £330, £322, £318 x 2 to name a few. Nice Simmental bulls particularly from Alec Simpson and David Mattinson – bulls £400, £368 and £355 and heifers at £330, £305, £290, £285, £280 and £278. A shortage of Limousins today, but what we had sold very well. Angus and Herefords as good as ever. It’s just the black and whites at the moment which seem to be taking a knock. The best £100+, very few in the £60-£80 bracket, plenty of bobbies reducing the overall average to £41. 6 stirks turned up on an off week and all sold well. Today the emphasis was on horned and hill going sheep in the breeding section. Cast sheep started the morning followed by prime lambs. Several pens made over the £2 per kilo mark from Lynne Marsden (222.5p, 205p, 201p x 2; Robert Canning 216p and 210p and Janet Parrington 207p). Plenty in the 190’s and averaged a pleasing 177p/kg for all quality and all weights. Breeding Ewes set off with Mule and Texels and were a straight trade and Cheviots good to sell. Ian Grisedale from Milton, Crooklands nr Milnthorpe judged the show classes which were kindly sponsored by Armstrong Watson Accountants, Business & Financial Advisers. In the Swaledale ewe class Mark and Sue Throup from Malham retained the Frank Wade Perpetual Trophy and their pen of ten 3-crop ewes went on to sell for £94. Jim Baines of Trawden got second place achieving £120 for his 3-crops to Alec Wade. T Robinson & Son, Catlow Farm came in third at £102 to Richard Mawson, Addingham. Overall, correct Swaledale ewes averaged £78. The Swaledale shearlings were won again by V A Fielding, Littleborough at £108. Next was Ted Fox, Hawes at £82 and in third place was John Hartley, Pendle at £125. Overall average £92.60. Alan Greenwod, Trawden was placed first in the Lonk class and received the Nathan Wade trophy. His 3-crop ewes went on to sell for £94 to Alec Wade. Second prize went to T Robinson & Son, Catlow Farm at £71 and Nicholas Pinder in third at £53. Overall correct Lonk average £59. Anthony Thompson, Foulridge was placed first in the other breed of Hill Going Shearling class. His pen of smart Gritstones made £148.00. David and Rachel Capstick, Hellifield achieved and £152.00 for their second placed pen of Cheviots and in third Jonathan Turner made £94.00 of his Scotch Black Faced shearlings. The new addition to today’s fixture was the inaugural show of Herdwicks. Outside of the livestock markets in the Lake District where else could you find such a selection? Herdwicks were brought to sell from as far as the North of Scotland to Lincolnshire and sold to a packed audience, going locally, back to Cumbria and as far away as Wrexham! A & M Brennand & Son, Chapel-le-Dale’s first prize 3-crop ewes went to ten year old Thomas Capstick, Hellifield for £84.00. Andrew Newhouse, Tosside won second and third prizes selling at £69.00 and £58.00. Top Price 3 and 4 crop ewes were for a pen of four from Jack Shepherd, Pately Bridge at £90.00. Frank Brennand also won the best pen of 5 Herdwick shearlings which sold for £115.00 and his third prize shearlings £90.00. It was Arnold Lancaster, Torver’s second prize Herdwick shearlings that made the top price of £125.00. The surprise of the day was, however, a 3-shear ram from Andrew Newhouse, Tosside which sold for £500! The rest of the shearlings sold next and Jonathan Turner took over the rostrum for a while. By all accounts all breeds were much better to sell than recently as were gimmer lambs. Highlights included Texels from F & H J Booth, Wigglesworth at £196 and £182. Mr G W Hall, Coniston-with-Kilnsey topped at £135 with Jacobs at £135 to year six pupil, Mary Throup, who goes to Kirkby Malham Primary School. Chilled out Rachel returned for the store lambs! What a difference penning up in the cattle building has made by virtually forcing vendors to present their store lambs in bigger numbers. This is what buyers want where possible. We Flew through these to a top of £77.50. Loads of pens in the £60’s and overall average of £58.00 for all quality. Fleshy lambs continue to sell well whilst under finished lambs lack premium prices. Comercial texel lambs out of mules would consistently sell at 170p/Kg to 175p/Kg. Farm assured lambs getting away well today with 10 buyers ringside. Ewes forward in numbers as is the story nationwide, proving harder to cash and would be less money on the day.
