Test Your Soil
Soil
Testing is
essential!
Find out what your soil needs first!
Soil Analysis Testing It all starts with good soil. Whether you’re gardening 10 sq. ft. or farming thousands of acres,
smart growers know that soil tests pay for themselves in increased productivity and targeted
fertilizing that is made possible by a specific diagnosis of the soil’s strengths and weaknesses.
Many years of soil audits on hundreds of different soils across the country have given us the
expertise to develop a unique soil analysis package, appropriate for growers of all sizes. This
package comes with PVFS’s booklet Understanding Your Soil Analysis Report which provides
the information you’ll need to address your soil’s needs organically. It is a practical, condensed
education in soil fertility and the most current field-proven organic techniques for achieving
it. It explains the readings given on the lab test and includes organic recommendations for all
levels of deficiency.

Soil Tests - How To Respond If Your
Soil Is Not An “A” Student
Nitrogen fixation - how that happens
in your soil
Advice from Peaceful Valley
Start with a Soil Test - It will save you money
If you don’t know what your garden soil is rich in or deficient in, you
won’t know what amendments or fertilizers to add (or avoid). Invest in
a professional lab soil analysis at least every 3 years if you’re a gardener
(annually if you’re a farmer) and supplement with home test kits in
between times.
Track your soil fertility over time by taking a soil sample at the same
time of year and using the same soil lab.
When you order your soil test from us, the results will come with our
free interpretive booklet which helps tremendously when implementing
your results.
Plant Cover Crops - They too will save you money
Cover crops, some of which are “green manure,” will stabilize
your soil during winter rains, increase water penetration, increase
microbial & biological activity, add organic matter to the soil when
tilled in, and can even raise your nitrogen levels depending on the
seed planted!
BOOKS
Observe, observe, observe
The status of your soil and your plants are constantly in flux due to
many different factors including soil chemistry, microbial population,
temperature, water, native soil, and the plants you are growing. While
our customers often ask us to tell them exactly what to add to their soil,
we can only provide guidelines, because the organic management of
soil fertility is not a simplistic system. The more you know about this
method, the greater your success will be in growing organically. Don’t
be afraid to apply your own common sense and develop your skills of
observation. Thank you for growing organically!
pH
Most people are familiar with the terms “acid” or “alkaline” soil.
Measuring pH, which literally means “potential Hydrogen”, reveals
your soil’s condition. A pH over 7 indicates “alkaline”. You find this
condition typically in low rainfall areas. A pH under 7 indicates
“acidic”. You see this condition more frequently in high rainfall areas
such as the Northern California coast where “acid-loving” plants such
as Coastal Redwoods and azaleas flourish. A pH at 7 (which is the pH
of distilled water) is referred to as “neutral”.
While a pH level may be helpful to indicate generally where your
soil stands, it is only part of the picture and should not be used alone
to determine how you need to amend your soil. This is why a more
complete soil test can be extremely beneficial in the process of starting
and maintaining a healthy garden.

Greener Thumbs Through Chemistry
These field test tools take full advantage of some of the best science out there.
The general principle of most of these tools and test kits is to measure particular properties of a solution. Solutions can be made by combining soil, fertilizer, organics (leaves, composts, etc.) into water (preferably distilled). Once
the properties of your soil and plants are known there are many insights to
be derived about the health, fertility, maturity and activity of your crops and
soil. The glossary below will help you understand the basics of what these
devices measure, and how that helps you have a greener thumb.
pH The scale of acidity-alkalinity. In soil, pH extremes limit biological activity,
humus formation, and plant growth. Frequent monitoring is essential, as soil pH
changes rapidly during fertilization, irrigation, and even the phases of the moon.
Effective pH monitoring of spray solutions will maximize pesticide effectiveness
and nutrient uptake in foliar feeds.
EC and ERGS - EC Electrical Conductivity of a solution. Measures the electrical
conductivity in microSiemens/cm generated by the ionic forms (anions and cations)
of major and minor nutrients in the soil. EC is an indication of the crop availability
of soluble nutrients in the soil.
ERGS Energy Released per Gram of Soil, as defined by Carey Reams. Reams
interprets the electrical conductivity as a measure of the energy available to a growing crop.
Whether you call it EC or ERGS, overall readings above 1,000 generally indicate a salt problem, energy loss and waste, and increased potential for root
burn and nematode proliferation. Overall levels below 200 indicate little or
no crop growth is occurring. Late-season crop finishing is directly correlated
to the EC or ERGS level.
TDS Total Dissolved Solids. An expression for the combined content of all organic
and non-organic substances contained in a liquid.
ORP Oxygen Reduction Potential or available oxygen. Oxygen availability is crucial to the plant’s uptake ability. Based on ORP reading, available oxygen can be
easily adjusted using hydrogen peroxide. This definitely enhances the effectiveness
of foliar feeds by increasing a plant’s ability to absorb them. ORP and pH readings
together provide an “rH value,” which is used to diagnose the biological condition
of your soil.
rH Redox Value. A soil rH below 25 indicates low oxygen, limited biological
activity, and a consequent lack of humus-building. A soil rH over 29 indicates too
much oxygen, resulting in oxidation of organic material and loss of carbon to the
atmosphere, limiting nutrient availability to the crop. rH value is derived from the
ORP and pH readings.
Brix High Brix indicates adequate nutrition and is an excellent indicator of
fertilization success. Plants with high Brix (reading above 12) sugar content have
good “immune systems.” The sugar content (Brix) of fruits is used to determine
maturity. Also used to monitor the Brix in plant tissue (leaves and stems) through
the season.

Add Organic Matter
What Is Compost & Why Do I Need It?
The composting process is the breakdown of organic materials by microorganisms.
For a balanced compost you need two kinds of materials. “Brown” materials
are high in carbon, “green” materials are high in Nitrogen. Watch our video
“Composting 101” to get some suggestions on which materials are brown or green,
and what materials NOT to use in your compost.
The many benefits of adding organic matter in the form of compost include
improving soil tilth, improving drainage in tight soils, improving water retention
in sandy soils, increasing air penetration into the soil so that microbes can flourish,
loosening soil for better root penetration, providing food for soil microbes, and
more. But you can have too much organic matter. Order a soil test to determine
whether you need to add organic matter, maintain organic matter, or promote
biological activity.

add organic matter
Want High Quality Compost - Fast?
High quality compost comes from a carefully tended “hot” compost pile with the
right mixture of brown and green matter, water, and oxygen. When all is working
optimally in a pile it will reach high temperatures of 120°-150°F. The high heat
will kill most pathogens and weed seeds, but the beneficial mycorrhizae will
survive. There is a natural “cooling off” period and then the compost is “finished
compost” or “humus” and can be put to use.
How To Make A “Hot” Compost Pile
To make the best compost you should create a fast, “hot” compost pile (in a bin
or on the ground) and add all the composting ingredients at once. If you manage
your compost pile well, you can have finished compost in 2-8 weeks.
1. Fill your compost bin, or build the pile, by layering equal amounts of brown
and green ingredients. The pile should not be bigger than a 3-foot cube, since you
will need to be able to turn it often. With this fast process you will need to watch
the balance of brown and green ingredients as the composting goes along, and be
prepared to supplement with more brown or green if the pile develops problems.
2. Speed up decomposition by using small pieces of ingredients (shredded leaves, not
whole leaves, for instance). Don’t use branches in a fast compost pile, because they
take longer to break down.
3. Spray water on each layer. Kick up the speed in the pile by adding compost
inoculants to the water you spray on the pile. Keep the pile as moist as a wrung-out
sponge at all times. Be careful when you touch the pile because it will be HOT using
this composting technique.
4. Turn the pile every 3 days with a digging fork or aerator tool.
5. Monitor the temperature of a fast compost pile. Your friends who are new to
gardening will squawk when they hear you own a compost thermometer, but you’ll
have the last laugh when you produce superb compost in a few weeks. A speedy pile
may go up to 120°F in the first 2 days, and up to 130°F in 3 to 4 days. When the
temperature drops to 110°F the compost may be close to finished, if your pile has
been performing at the fastest rate—or it may need a boost of additional turning
and water to heat up again.
Compost is “finished” when it is dark, crumbly, and sweet-smelling. You should not
be able to identify the original pieces of the ingredients. Let it sit for a few days, then
use on your beds or to make compost tea!
If you need to add organic matter:
Add compost (10 tons per acre or 50-100 pounds per 100 square feet). You can
also use manure, sawdust, or rice hulls, but these will take longer to break down
and may reduce nitrogen availability in the short-term. You may also grow cover
crops and till them into the soil, giving you quickly decomposable organic matter.

Compostex - A Composter’s
Best Friend!
Texel Compostex UV-Resistant Compost
Cover (By The Foot -12’ width or roll 12’ x 164’)
Compostex compost cover is a completely breathable,
non-woven fabric made of 100% UV-resistant, black
polypropylene that completely sheds rainfall from covered
piles or windrows. It is 1.7mm thick and will be usable for
at least 5 to 10-plus years (depending on climate conditions
and whether you leave it in the sun, when not in use).
Compostex maintains the optimum level of humidity
throughout the composting process by accelerating the
evaporation of excess water from the pile. It is completely
permeable to oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. In
wet weather, Compostex ensures surface runoff of up to
100% of rain and snow melt. In dry weather, it reduces
moisture loss by protecting the covered materials from the
drying effects of sun and wind. The cover will also protect
the pile from windblown weed seeds, flies and scavenging
animals.

Big Returns From Little Creatures
Redworm Composting
In-home composting with redworms is safe, odorless and
easy and it gives a spectacular return. In one week, 1–2 lb
of mature redworms will convert 3½–7 lb of food scraps
into castings five times richer than the most fertile soils.
You provide the worms, bedding, food scraps and moisture.
Bins can be located inside the house or outdoors in a shady
spot where freezing or overheating won’t be a problem. You
will need at least 1 lb of worms to get started. Gardeners
interested in quick turnover, or vegetarians who generate
more compostable food scraps, may want to buy 2 or more
lbs of worms.

weight daily in organic matter and

They can tolerate considerable heat

Cedar Outdoor Worm Bin Simple, Efficient, Effective
This lightweight, durable cedar bin
is easy to manage, and an attractive
addition to any home garden!
Worm bins efficiently convert
household food waste and garden slash
to worm castings quickly and easily.
This box, along with 4 lbs. of Red
Worms will convert 200 lb of food
waste to worm castings per month-the amount of waste a family of four
generates. The steady supply of dark,
rich worm casting can be used on site
for landscapes, gardens and house
plants. Castings will not burn even the most delicate of plants.
The bottomless design allows excess water to wick away, helping to prevent over
saturation of the bed.
The split bed design is an extremely effective
approach to vermicomposting. One side is used
at a time--when you’ve filled one half of the box
with layers of food waste covered with bedding,
you then begin to fill the second half. This gives
the worms time to convert the waste in the first
half to castings. When the worms have finished
converting, they will then migrate through the
cracks in the center divide and begin converting
the food waste in the second half. This allows
you to harvest your castings from the first half,
leaving room for more food waste--so the worms are not disturbed, and the system
operates continually!
An instructional DVD is included with the purchase of this bin.
Please note that the DVD mentions receiving your worms in seven days. Worms do not come with this bin
-- you must order them separately.

days for delivery. All packages sent via SmartPost
are carried via FedEx from PVFGS to your local
post office, and then delivered to you via your USPS
mail carrier. P.O. boxes are okay via this method.
If your box weighs 40lbs or less you will have

We can not ship to P.O. boxes via this method.
Customers receiving pricing discounts are not
eligible for flat rate shipping.
Some items have other flat rate shipping

Some items require an additional $5 handling
charge, due to unusual shipping characteristics,
which will be added to $12.99.
Please note that a small handful of items have
been disqualified from flat rate shipping although
weighing less than 40 lbs (e.g. bags of compost,
potting soil, soil conditioner, etc).

using our competitive shipping rates.

Return Policy
• Special orders, drop-shipped items, custom mixes, custom cuts (i.e. greenhouse
poly, shade cloth...etc.), live plants, nursery stock, bargain items, broken bags and
beneficial insects are not returnable or refundable under any circumstances.
• It is also important to note that PVF&GS does not offer a satisfaction
guarantee. Accordingly, we do not accept returns of items that were used as we can’t
resell them as new and/or return them to vendors simply because they didn’t meet
your expectation.
• Our return policy for food processing items is different from our standard return
policy due to hygiene concerns. Even if an item has not been used, if the box has
been opened, we will assess a 15% restocking fee as we must re-sell the item as an
”open box” at a discount.
• Within 30 days of purchase or delivery, whichever the latter, you can return
any (non-perishable) item for a full refund (excluding shipping), provided (1) you
have your receipt (or the corresponding invoice is in your customer record in our
computer) and (2) the product is in unused, like-new condition, with its intact
original packaging.
• Items deemed “defective” (i.e. stopped working and/or broke after a few days) will
need to be inspected by one of our Customer Service staff, who in turn may have to
contact the manufacturer for resolution. Accordingly, we will likely not be able to
come up with a decision on the spot. All defective returns must be complete, clean
and soil-free. Sprayers specifically must be rinsed, drained, dry and free of chemical
smell. Defective units may then be repaired or replaced at the manufacturer’s option.
For products covered under manufacturer’s warranty, please understand that we
must strictly follow the manufacturer guidelines, that we may need to contact them
for warranty claims and that an immediate decision may not always be possible.
3-Day Return Policy for Perishable Merchandise We guarantee the perishable
merchandise we sell (including but not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes,
onion transplants...etc.) to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. However,
because these items will deteriorate over time, we expect you to inspect them carefully
upon receipt and plant them without any delay. Should there be any quality problem,
you must notify us within 3 (three) days of your purchase, or delivery, whichever the latter,
to request an exchange or a refund. Beyond 3 days from the date of purchase, or delivery,
whichever the latter, perishable merchandise is not returnable nor refundable under any
circumstances.
Limited Replacement Guarantee for Dormant Bare Root Trees If your dormant
bare-root fruit tree (including potted fig or almond, kiwi vines, and pomegranate)
or nut trees (excluding Pecan), does not leaf out above the graft by May 15th, we
suggest you do a scratch test - checking for green under the bark. If it is brown, the
tree is dead and you should pull it from the ground, take pictures including the roots,
and email them ASAP to [email protected].
Once pictures are received, they will be examined for damage (from rodent,
mechanical...) or root rot. If none is evident, we will issue you a store credit for the
price you paid for that tree (excluding shipping). This store credit is redeemable
toward the purchase of any other bare-root item of your choice the following season.
We reserve the right to not issue credit for replacement of already replaced items.
Bare Root replacement claims MUST be received BY JUNE 1st for
consideration. (Due to their tendency to bloom later, Persimmon trees have a
deadline of June 15th.)
Concerns received after June 1st will be denied for credit.
Potted Fruit Trees Olive, Citrus, and Avocado, are shipped leafed out, not dormant,
and are not covered by the Dormant Tree Limited Replacement Guarantee.
Limited Replacement Guarantee For Dormant Bare-Root Perennials If you
question the viability of your bare root perennial artichokes, asparagus, blueberries,
caneberries, currants, Goji, grape vines, horseradish, hops, Jerusalem artichoke,
rhubarb, or strawberries, contact us via email by May 15th, at helpdesk@
groworganic.com. If we determine your plant(s) as being un-viable, we will issue
a store credit for the price you paid for the plant(s) - (excluding shipping).
Obviously, if only partial failure is determined, only partial credit will be issued. This
credit is redeemable toward the purchase of any other bare-root item of your choice
the following season. We reserve the right to not issue credit for replacement of
already replaced items.
Bare Root replacement claims MUST be received BY JUNE 1ST for
consideration. Concerns received after June 1st will be denied for credit.
Fine Print
Catalog Pricing Although we do our best to maintain published prices
for an entire catalog term, product prices and bulk seed increments may
change without notice. If you find a lower price from a brick & mortar
store on our products, kindly provide us proof within 30 days of purchase
and we will gladly match it, beat it, or refund you the difference. This offer
applies to identical products and excludes misprints, liquidation sales or
floor display model sales. Despite our best efforts, a small number of items
in our catalogs or website may be mis-printed or mis-priced. We reserve
the right to correct any such mis-prints or mis-prices. If the correct price of
an item sold by Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply is higher than the
stated price and you do not not agree to pay the correct price, we will cancel
your order, notify you of such cancellation and refund any prices you may
have already paid.
Shipping Information Simply put, we are always looking for the cheapest
method of shipping available for your order. Most items ship via standard
FedEx or USPS by weight and zone method. Our call center or website
can calculate your shipping. To get a rate quote for items listed with a ship
method “Truck” or “Drop Ship,” give us a call and we will find you the
cheapest freight. Drop Ships Items shipping directly from the vendor are noted as such.
Drop ship orders will often be delivered within two weeks of ordering, but
in some cases these orders can take longer due to product availability and
weather delays. Once an order has shipped, your order cannot be cancelled.
Shipping to Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin
Islands Items generally ship to these locations via USPS Priority Mail.
USPS does not guarantee transit time and Parcel Post can take up to several
weeks to AK, HI, and PR. Boat and Barge shipments for palletized orders
are available. Call for a quote. Perishable items and beneficial insects cannot
ship to these locations.
About Shippable Nursery Stock Orders Seasonal products (perishable
plants) are stocked for a limited duration (harvest and weather dependent).
Orders are filled on a first-come first-serve basis. Due to these factors and
limited storage space, we are unable to accommodate any delay ship dates,
beyond our set shipping schedule. We strongly recommend that you place
your order as early as possible after receiving your catalog.
Turnaround Time and Back Orders Orders where all items are in-stock
typically ship within 1–2 business days, but turnaround time does vary by
season. Expedited shipping options are available upon request.
Tracking Your Order If shipping by FedEx, a tracking number will
be e-mailed to you the day after your order ships. Please contact us
immediately if you think your shipment is lost or if your shipment arrives
damaged.
Receiving Your Order When your order arrives, open the package
immediately and inspect the content against the packing slip; it is especially
important to check viability on living plants. Notify us immediately of any
shortages or damage, do not discard any damaged items or shipping cartons.
The shipping company may require an inspection prior to approving any
claim.
For Truck Shipments Do not sign for the shipment until you have
confirmed the shipment is complete and has no apparent and/or concealed
damage. If there is a shortage or damage it must be noted on the proof of
delivery, or we cannot accept any responsibility.
Guaranteed To Germinate Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply brand
vegetable seeds from packs are guaranteed to germinate within the year
they are packed for, as indicated on the seed pack, and grow true to name
and color. Once the seeds have sprouted, please understand that Peaceful
Valley cannot be held responsible for the many uncontrollable growing and
climatic conditions that must be met to insure the success of your crop(s).
Privacy Policy In order to expand the organic community, we may rent,
exchange, or sell the names and addresses of those customers who do not
opt-out by calling (888) 784-1722 or emailing a request to:

Fertilize Organically
Fertilizer:
At the heart of all organic growing
At the heart of all organic growing is the art and science of fertilizing organically.
Healthy soil nurtures healthy plants which generally grow better, taste better, store
longer and consequently, should have increased resistance to the stresses caused
by heat, cold, drought, pests, diseases, rapid growth, etc. Fertile soil is not only
the first step for increasing yields and quality but also for natural pest control and
season extending.
How to navigate this catalog:

For Flowering & Fruiting
Phosphorus is what plants need for flower, fruit, and root
development. To supply Phosphorus, Soft Rock Phosphate is
the best value. Bone Meal can also be used.
Potassium Fertilizers
For Vigor
Potassium is what plants need, among other things, to
establish vigor and resistance through sugar formation. To
supply Potassium use Sulfate of Potash or Greensand.
Calcium and Trace Minerals
For Health and Resilience
Almost every field test is low in Trace Minerals. We get
excellent response from soil applications of Compost, Algit
Kelp Meal or multiple trace minerals (Azomite or Nutra Min).
In extreme cases specific trace mineral supplements may be
needed.

The “Key” to Fertilizing Organically
If you need to amend the soil
Unless marked otherwise, most of our fertilizers are
granular or powdered and are suitable for working
into the soil with a spade. After testing your soil to
find deficiencies, work these products into top soil
or sprinkle them around the base of a plant.
If you need fast acting fertilizers
use liquid or soluble fertilizers suitable for watering the
soil or spraying plant leaves. Look for these symbols:
F
I
Foliar Spray Spray leaf surfaces for rapid
plant absorption.
Injectable Hook up a fertilizer injector to
your drip irrigation system for a fast acting
fertilizer dose straight to the roots.
If you need slowly releasing fertilizers
use pelleted fertilizers. Look for this symbol:
P
Pelleted These fertilizers provide a slow
release pellet that can give months of nutrients
in an easy to apply form for lawns & fields.

Follow the
to Organic Products
Everything we carry can be used in an organic garden. If you’re a
certified organic farmer, we know it can be hard to find products
listed by certifying organizations, so we try our best to keep the
following information up to date throughout our catalog! Always
check with your certifying agency before making your final
selection.
The National Organic Program The Federal Organic
Foods Production Act of 1990 standardized USA organic
farming practices so consumers could expect consistent use of the
word organic. Certified organic farmers must follow NOP
specifications to determine which materials (fertilizers, pesticides,
etc.) they can use. When manufacturers give us a letter of compliance
with the National Organic Program, we mark the product with the
Meets NOP logo.
Organic Materials Review Institute The Organic
Materials Review Institute (OMRI) evaluates the
acceptability of products for organic use. Its evaluation process now
takes NOP specifications into consideration. Many organic certifiers
have long relied on OMRI’s lists to simplify the process of
determining allowable materials. For more information see www.
omri.org.
Washington State Department of Agriculture The
Washington State Department of Agriculture also has an
organic program that looks at the acceptability of products for
organic use, and maintains a list of products they have determined
are NOP compliant. See www.agr.wa.gov for more information.
California Department of Food & Agriculture The
California Department of Food & Agriculture monitors
the inputs or ingredients in fertilizers that market
themselves as organic in the state of California. See www.
cdfa.ca.gov for more information.
Certified Organic Seed We offer a large selection of certified
organic, non-GMO fruit, vegetable, and
cover crop seed to choose from!
Fertilizer Solutions Chart
The fertilizer solutions chart on the following pages will help you
choose the product that most closely matches your needs.
Find the fertilizer characteristics at the top of the chart. Dots
indicate the product in that row has the characteristic listed at
the top of the column.
For organic status, products are listed with the symbol of their
organic certifying agency (at the time of publishing). Find the
product in this catalog by going to the page number listed next to
the product name. Always check the product label and confirm
that the product is allowed by your certifying agency. We do our
best before publishing each catalog to update our solution charts with
current status with OMRI, WSDA, CDFA and NOP. However, the
status of any product can change at any time, so use this chart only as
a guideline.

Nitrogen for Vegetative Growth
Pvfs Liquid Grow 5-1-2
PV
Nitrogen - the “N” in “N-P-K”
Nitrogen is a primary nutrient for plant growth,
and is responsible for plants’ green foliage.
Nitrogen is necessary for the success of your garden. Make sure
there is an adequate supply of Nitrogen in the soil before planting or
transplanting into the field. Nitrogen is most important in the early
stages, during the formation of leaves, and general growing period. It is
less important during flower formation and fruit setting (when plants
rely on Phosphorus).
Over-applying Nitrogen can “burn” plants (root damage that shows
symptoms above ground), so stay within recommended application
rates. Organic fertilizers are less likely to “burn” as compared to their
synthetic counterparts. Excessive Nitrogen in your crops can actually
lead to nitrate poisoning if you or your animals eat these greens.
Some of your Nitrogen needs may be met by organic matter as it
decomposes. Because this Nitrogen is difficult to test chemically it can
only be taken into account as an estimate. In general, higher organic
matter means higher potential Nitrogen release. In soils with over 5%
organic matter (see your soil test results), consider reducing Nitrogen
amendments by 1/4.
Order a soil analysis (SVS100 or SVS200) to find out what your
Nitrogen level is and what your Nitrogen needs are.
Recognizing Nitrogen Deficiencies:
If your plants are stunted in their growth and their leaves are yellowing, there
is a chance this is due to a Nitrogen deficiency. These symptoms could be
from other stressors, so the most reliable measurement is a soil test.
Fast Acting Nitrogen:
Add liquid forms of Nitrogen during the growing season if observable
deficiencies occur. If you need to address a Nitrogen deficiency fast,
Liquid Fish (F1335) can be diluted 4 tbs/gal and sprayed onto plant
leaves. This also dramatically helps the growth of young seedlings.
Adding Nitrogen Fertilizers:
If your soil analysis shows that you need to add Nitrogen, work into the
soil one of these products (for example):
3-5 lbs of Blood Meal (F101) per 100 square feet
4-7 lbs of Fish Meal (F1055) per 100 square feet
6-10 lbs of Cottonseed Meal (F790) per 100 square feet
3-6 lbs of Feather Meal (F940) per 100 square feet
Cover Cropping for Long Term Increased Nitrogen:
Legumes, when inoculated with a rhyzobacteria, can take atmospheric
Nitrogen and convert it into a plant accessible form of Nitrogen in the soil.
These crops are often referred to as “green manure” since, like composted
animal manure, they are high in Nitrogen and excellent for the soil.
If You Have Too Much Nitrogen:
If Nitrogen levels are higher than 40 ppm (according to your soil test),
the soil needs to be “devigorated”. Plant “heavy feeding” crops such as
corn or grass-only cover crops.

Corn Gluten Meal 9-1-0
Slow release source of 9–10% nitrogen
purely derived from vegetable protein. A
pre-emergent weed suppressant that inhibits
root formation of germinating seeds. Allow 1–4
months after application depending on soil
conditions and weather before direct seeding.
If soil temperatures and biological activity are
low, the allelopathic effects can last up to 6
months. No ill effect for established plantings.
Corn gluten is especially good for lawns and
tends to be fast acting. 20–40 lb/1000 sq ft
or 900–1800 lb/acre. NOTE: While we are
continuing to look for a source of organic corn gluten, we have been unable
to locate any so far. Consequently, the corn gluten we now carry is from
“conventional” sources and there is unfortunately no guarantee that it is free
from any GMO corn.

Phosphorus for Flowering
& Fruiting
Phosphorus - the“P” in “N-P-K”
Phosphorus is the key element plants need
for flowering, fruiting and rooting.
You see this compound primarily in the form of bones (bone
meal) or ancient bone piles (rock phosphate). It is normally
found in nature combined with calcium in the form of
calcium phosphate. In this form, the Phosphorus tends to
remain “locked up” with calcium (not available to plants) so it
must be “unlocked” in the soil through natural microbial and
chemical processes.
It is crucial to have Phosphorus in adequate quantity and a
healthy, balanced, bio-active soil to make it available to the
plants.
Because of the stability of the calcium-Phosphorus bond,
burning does not occur even with high Phosphorus
applications. Very large applications, though, may result in
an upward shift in pH toward alkalinity due to the calcium
content of Phosphorus amendments.
Keep well ahead of your Phosphorus applications because
just about all products for organic agriculture that contain
Phosphorus do not supply it in a readily available form. This
means that it will release very slowly, sometimes over a period
of years.
Phosphrous is not a very water mobile element. Soft rock
phosphate should be worked into the soil, if possible. Since
it does not tend to leach out of the soil, one application will
usually be adequate for 2 to 3 years.
Order a soil analysis (SVS100 or SVS200) to find out what
your Phosphorus level is and what your Phosphorus needs are.
Adding Phosphorus:
If your soil analysis shows that you need to add Phosphorus,
one solution is to work into the soil 2-5 lbs of Soft Rock
Phosphate (F2101) per 100 square feet (or 500-2,000 lbs per
acre).Test the pH of the soil where you’ll be planting. The pH
ranges from 1 (most acid) to 7 (neutral) to 14 (most alkaline).
It is likely that your soil is in the 5 to 8.5 range.
Here comes the chemistry: the pH of your soil affects how
chemicals react. Bone meal is a good source of Phosphorus, as
is soft rock phosphate, but the nutrient can only be accessed
in acid soil.
If you have alkaline soil, use Hi P Seabird Guano, or Hi P
Bat Guano for Phosphorus.
Blooming Time!
Why do we plant bulbs? So they’ll bloom! What makes bulbs
bloom? Phosphorus. Enjoy Spring planting some of these
Summer blooming bulbs and don’t forget to work Phosphorus
into the soil at planting time.

26 potassium for vigor
Potassium for Vigor
Potassium - the “K” in “N-P-K”
Potassium is critical for plant vigor and resistance
through regulating plant metabolism.
Potassium or Potash, exists in most types of organic matter. Primarily,
it provides a good ionic environment for plant metabolic processes to
happen; in other words, it helps the plant regulate its growth.
Plants that are deficient are more susceptible to diseases and frost
damage. Potassium plays a key roll in strengthening cell walls, therefore
decreasing a cell’s permeability and susceptibility to damage.
Too much Potassium can lead to a high pH. Wood ash is often
suggested as a source of Potassium, but we do not recommend its use as
it is very difficult to know just how much Potassium is in the ash and
you can unknowingly impact your soil pH.
Order a soil analysis (SVS100 or SVS200) to find out what your
Potassium level is and what your soil’s Potassium needs are.
Recognizing Potassium Deficiencies:
Leaves that appear scorched around the edges may indicate a deficiency.
Purple spotting as well as yellowing between leaf veins may also be
indicators. A soil test is the best way to confirm a deficiency as these
symptoms may be the result of other factors including a lack of water,
or wind scorch.
Fast Acting Potassium:
If you need a rapid solution, try the Ultra Fine Sulfate of Potash
(F2300) which is water-soluble and can be sprayed on plant foliage for
quick absorption.
Adding Potassium Fertilizers:
If your soil analysis shows that you need to add Potassium, two options
are to work Sulfate of Potash (F2300) or Greensand (F016, F1120) into
the soil. The analysis booklet will specify quantities based on your soil
analysis, but this is a broad guideline:
½-2 lbs of Sulfate of Potash (F2300) per 100 square feet
100-500 lbs of Sulfate of Potash (F2300) per acre
Long Term Solutions:
Since Potassium ions are highly soluble, they will easily leach from
soils with poor soil structure. With this in mind, work on improving
soil structure through regular applications of compost and annual
cover cropping. Your improved soil structure will slow the leaching of
Potassium and other nutrients.
If You Have Too Much Potassium:
The corrective action for too much Potassium in the soil is to add
Diamond K Gypsum (F1153 ) (at 2,000 lb per acre or 5 lb per 100
square feet) to leach out the excess Potassium.

Calcium and Trace Minerals
PV
Other Major Nutrients:
Calcium (Ca)
Calcium is an abundant element in nature. Calcium is a critical
element in cell wall structure. But when calcium is too high, you
end up with an “alkaline” condition (high pH) that can impede
plant absorption of some nutrients. In this case you may want to
add sulfur. Some examples of Calcium rich products include: Oystershell
Lime (F1850), Marble Limestone (F1570) or Bulk Mined Lime.
Magnesium (Mg)
Magnesium is naturally found in some types of clay soils. Clay soils
with high magnesium are composed of the type of clay that can be
used for pottery because the magnesium binds the clay together.
Like potassium, magnesium is important for plant metabolic
processes, especially in chlorophyll production and in the uptake of
phosphorus. Too much magnesium can “bind up” your soil so that
water and nutrients do not penetrate well. Excessive magnesium
can cause high pH. You can add magnesium either with or without
calcium depending on the amendment you use. Some examples of
Magnesium rich products include: Potassium & Magnesium K-Mag
(F2360) or Magnesium with Calcium: Dolomite (If you add dolomite,
reduce your lime application by the same amount).
If the soil has too much magnesium, add Gypsum (F1153) at
2,000 lb per acre or 5 lb per 100 square feet to leach out the excess
magnesium. Add gypsum annually until the soil test for magnesium
is at an acceptable level.
Sulfur (S)
This important nutrient is often forgotten as a needed element in
the soil’s mineral bank. Though it exists as elemental sulfur in some
places on earth, sulfur is usually found as a natural compound, such
as gypsum. Like nitrogen, it is also an important ingredient for
the fabrication of proteins. A soil very high in sulfur can be acidic,
but it takes an extremely high amount to cause damage to plants.
Some examples of Sulfur rich products include: Gypsum (F1153) or Soil
Sulfur (F2210)
Sodium (Na)
Sodium is found in common table salt (sodium chloride) as well as
in the salt found in sea water. Sodium should always be under 100
ppm. If it is too high, add Gypsum (F1153) at 1 ton per acre (5 lb
per 100 square feet). Sodium that is too high causes the pH to rise
and impedes other nutrients from being taken up by the plants.
Make the gypsum addition annually until the soil test no longer
shows too high a level. If your water is high in sodium, you may
always need to add gypsum. There is no known level that is too low.
To reduce Sodium levels use Gypsum (F1153).

Blends for Balanced Plant
Nutrition
When & What to Fertilize
Time flies... and then we realize, often too late, we should have, could
have, would have, fertilized our garden. So here are the bare essentials
to mark on your gardening calendar!
Spring
Soil Test Test & Amend
Whether you test your soil in the fall, winter, or spring, do it! It is
best to test your soil at the same time every year, using the same lab or
method so you can track your soil fertility over time. Amend your soil
according to the test results for a bountiful garden!
Garden Soil Soil Inoculant
As the soil starts to warm, but before you plant into it, apply a soil
inoculant. Many contain mycorrhizae, or fungi spores, that provide
essential mineral elements and add vital biological life to garden soils
and potting mixes. The presence of select mycorrhizae can help a plant
absorb 10–50 times more nutrients!
Seedlings & Transplants Liquid Kelp & Liquid Fish
The micronutrients found in Liquid Kelp help very young plants thrive.
Dipping transplants into a kelp solution before planting can reduce
transplant shock. Once true leaves appear, water your plants with
Liquid Fish every two weeks to promote growth.
Summer
Vegetables Granular Balanced Fertilizer
For heavy feeders, like tomatoes and corn, applying a balanced,
granular fertilizer in early Summer can help promote healthy growth
all the way through the season. Top dress, or sprinkle, the fertilizer in
the recommended amount on top of the soil, being sure not to touch
the stem or leaves with the powder.
Lawns & Gardens Compost Tea
All of our employees swear by regular applications of aerated compost
tea! You can apply compost tea to everything from vegetables to lawns
to increase beneficial microbial activity in the soil or on leaf surfaces.
Fall
Plant Cover Crops Sow Inoculated Green Manure Seed
After you have harvested from your garden, but before the soil cools
down too much, broadcast a cover crop seed, such as our Organic
Premium Soil Builder Mix inoculated with the Garden Combination
Inoculant. It will stabilize your soil during the winter and “fix”, or
add atmospheric Nitrogen into your garden soil, through the roots &
rhizomes. If you till the cover crop into the soil in Spring, you will also
increase the organic matter in your soil.
Bulbs & Perennials Plant with Phosphorus
Fall is the perfect time to plant flower bulbs and perennials. You only
get one chance to incorporate Phosphorus into the soil, near the future
root zone of your plants, as it is fairly immobile and does not travel well
through soil. So be sure to add Phosphorus at planting time.
Lawns Feed with slow release Nitrogen and Phosphorus
Nitrogen will green the lawn & Phosphorus will support root growth
during winter rains, preparing your lawn for quick spring growth. Look
for a slow-release fertilizer such as Lawn Restore or Dr. Earth’s Lawn
Fertilizer.

Winter
Mulch Everything! Rice Straw or Other Organic Mulch
Applying a thick layer of mulch around or over dormant plants will
protect the roots from freezing temperatures and prevent the loss of
perennial plants. The mulch will slowly break down, encouraging
happy microbial activity, which is vital for root and soil health. An
extra bonus is that the mulch will naturally suppress early Spring
weeds!
Bare Root Trees & Perennials PrimeStart Booster Blend
When planting dormant, bare root plants into winter soil, be sure to
sprinkle our all organic PrimeStart Booster Blend in the planting hole.
This all organic blend provides just what your plants need. It has small
amounts of all the major nutrients and many micronutrients, made
more available by the humates in the mix.
Balanced Blend Fertilizers
These fertilizers have a blending of elements that complement one
another to provide a full spectrum balanced fertilization.

Phytamin All Purpose 4-3-4 CA Organic f
i
This high quality organic fertilizer is excellent for
both foliar feeding and soil application. The 4-3-4
formula is an excellent balanced natural fertilizer
for general use throughout the growing season. It
is derived from seabird guano, fish solubles and
potassium sulfate. Use on vegetables, fruit and nut
trees, berries, grapes, nursery and container plants.
For foliar application: Apply 2-4 quarts per acre in
sufficient water to achieve thorough coverage. Smaller growers
use 3-4 tbs per gallon (3 oz per 1000 sq ft). For trees, berries and
fruiting vegetables, such as tomatoes and peppers, begin spraying
after the start of bloom. For all other vegetables and nursery and
container plants, spray after the 4 (true) leaf stage. For grapes, begin spraying when canes
reach 12 inches. Repeat application every 10-14 days. It is best to apply foliars in the early
morning or early evening. Avoid using on lettuce and other tender leafy greens or use a
much more diluted spray.
For soil application: Use 5-10 gallons per acre as a side dress. Smaller growers use
8-10 ounces per gallon. For drip application, use 1-5 gallons per acre, or 6 oz per gallon.
Always inject phytamin in front of any filter system and always flush lines after use.

Crab Shell Meal 4-3-0
This slow release fertilizer is a by-product of
shellfish processing. Besides providing some
slow release Nitrogen and Phosphorus, shell
meals are very high in chitin. Studies show
that chitin provides a source of carbon and
nitrogen that stimulates microbial growth in
the soil. Beneficial chitin-feeding microbes
multiply in the soil and consume the chitin in
the shell meal until it is gone. At that stage
they move on to consume any other high chitin
sources that might be in the soil. Apply at 5002000 lbs per acre, or 12-50 lb/1000 sq ft.

How To Make Compost Tea
Compost Tea Defined
Making Aerated Compost Tea
Special solutions of garden “teas” have been around for centuries, but
the latest technique of aerating compost tea is relatively new. It’s an
increasingly popular way to create a soil inoculant.
Let’s define the different garden liquids, including aerated compost tea.
1. Fill the bucket with water up to 3” below the top.
2. Run brewer for 1-2 hours to dissipate any chlorine in the water, if
you are using tap water.
3. While brewer is still running, put 4 tablespoons of compost tea
catalyst into the water.
4. Place the compost strainer over the bucket and stretch the elastic
band around the upper part of the bucket. Push the strainer gently
down into the bucket.
5. Put 3-4 cups of arctic humus or compost into the strainer.
6. Gently stir the liquid inside the strainer from time to time. The
more you do this, the more microbes can be extracted from the Arctic
Humus or compost. A smooth plastic long-handled spoon is ideal.
7. After 24 hours, the brew is ready to use. Use it immediately as
microbes do not live very long and will begin to die out in only a few
hours. Keep the air flowing until you use the compost tea.
8. Immediately after emptying the tea, rinse all components with hot
water and allow to dry before making the next batch. Use a plastic
brush if residue does not rinse off easily.
Longtime Gardeners Remember Manure Tea
That was made by taking a hunk of manure, wrapping it in a piece
of burlap or cheesecloth, and suspending it in a water-filled drum or
watering can. After soaking for several days or weeks, the manure
bundle was removed and the watery solution poured on a beloved
plant. Famed illustrator and old-fashioned gardener Tasha Tudor swore
by this for her peonies. There are concerns about the levels of E. coli
that live in manure tea, persist in the container, and can be transported
on to edible plants.
Leachate
is the liquid that oozes from the base of a compost pile. This is NOT
compost tea. It is a byproduct of the composting process and if it occurs
before the compost process is complete, the leachate may contain
harmful pathogens. Do not use this as you would compost tea.
Worm Leachate Or Worm Juice
is the liquid that comes out of a worm-composting bin. Many
gardeners put it directly on the soil around their plants.
Traditional Non-Aerated Compost Tea [NCT]
is made the same way as manure tea. Also referred to as Non-aerated
Compost Tea [NCT], it relies on the passive interaction of the compost
and the water. A chunk of compost is soaked for a period of time in a
container of water, and the resulting extract is NCT.
Aerated Compost Tea [ACT]
In our video Tricia demonstrates how to make AERATED
COMPOST TEA [ACT] in our compost tea brewer. She uses Arctic
Humus (you can also use finished compost), a catalyst, and chlorinefree water—all bubble together in our brewer for at least 24 hours. The
theory behind the aeration and the use of a catalyst is that they aid the
growth of the beneficial microbial populations in the tea.

Brewing Tips:
There are several factors that affect the quality of compost tea: the
microbiological profile of the humus or compost, the nutrient source,
the water temperature, and the oxygen level.
- Use a good source of quality compost, and do not use more than the
recommended rate of 3-4 cups per 5 gallons of water. More is not better.
- Use the compost tea catalyst as a nutrient source.
- The best temperature range for brewing is 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit,
with an optimum temperature of 73 degrees Fahrenheit.
- If the batch begins to smell bad, dispose of it, clean all components
(except the pump), soak them in a solution of hydrogen peroxide and
start over. The most likely cause of this is renegade anaerobic bacteria
that have colonized an improperly cleaned system.

Tea Ingredients
Aerobic Compost Tea is brewed to extract and multiply populations of
beneficial micro-organisms including bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. The
compost supplies the microbes while the catalyst and amendments promote
their population growth. As a soil soak the microbes will colonize plant debris
and promote nutrient recycling.

Beneficial Microorganisms
Mycorrhizae - a plant’s best friend
Over 95% of plants in the world perform best when their roots are supported
by mycorrhizae. But what are endo & ecto mycorrhizae and what do they
actually do?
MYCOR “fungus” RHIZA “root”
There is a mutually beneficial relationship that exists between plant roots and
these fungi that colonize roots and build far-reaching filaments through the soil.
Why is this important?
Increase Nutrient Uptake & Water Absorption
The fungi multiply the absorbing area of roots by 100 to 1,000% which means
that the plants, with their fungi helpers, will absorb many more nutrients and
water than their uninoculated counterparts. What’s more is that mycorrhizal
fungi are able to dissolve and capture locked up nutrients that would otherwise
not be accessible to plant roots.
Improve Soil Structure
The fungi filaments produce humic compounds that help improve soil structure.
This allows for better root growth, and better water penetration, among other
benefits.
ENDOmycorrhizae inside the root
90% of plants, mostly leafy green plants such as grasses, vegetables, flowers, and
fruit trees benefit from endomycorrhizae fungi.
ECTOmycorrhizae live outside the root
5% of plants, mostly woody plants, such as conifers and oaks, benefit from
ectomycorrhizae fungi.
Inoculate! Get the most from your soil!
Unlock nutrients in your soil, allow your plants to absorb more of the fertilizer
you’ve applied, and nurture your soil and plants with mycorrhizae.

Bio Dynamic Field Spray
Dr. Pfeiffer developed this inoculant
specifically for spraying on organic matter
(such as cover crops or stubble) immediately
prior to working it under. Organic materials
tie up nitrogen as they are being “digested”
by the soil, delaying the availability of
nutrients for the production crop. Field
spray speeds the decomposition process and
stimulates humus formation. Each 2-oz
packet activates up to 1 acre when diluted
with water.

Foliar & Fertigation
Foliar Feeding
Foliar feeding addresses the immediate needs of a growing crop, as opposed to
long-term soil deficiencies. Foliar feeding is spraying water-soluble fertilizers onto
the leaf surface of the plants. All plants absorb nutrients through their leaves and
stems, using stomata—little openings similar to the pores of our skin. Plants
absorb foliar sprays 20 times faster than soil-applied nutrients. Foliars help
plants compensate for soil deficiencies (low fertility, low soil temperature, etc.)
during the growing season.
Foliars fortify plants facing other types of stress as well, such as drought, heat,
cold, mechanical or insect damage, or the onset of disease-susceptible periods.
Foliar feeding can also be timed to encourage and/or enhance critical points
in the plant’s growth cycle, such as seedling emergence or rapid growth phases
or flowering, fruiting and seed formation. Many crops benefit from 6–8 foliar
applications per season. Some growers apply weekly foliars at low concentrations to
improve nutrient balance.
Materials suitable for foliar feeding are identified by an f and are also listed as
such on our Fertilizer Solutions Chart (pg. 18).
Fertigation
Foliar fertilizers can also be applied through irrigation lines (known as
“fertigation”) but you must increase the foliar rates by at least five times.
Fertilizing through an irrigation system is referred to as Fertigation.
Historically, the products used (known as “injectables”) in this type of
application have primarily been conventional (nonorganic) or, if organic,
uneconomical.
These limitations have been minimized now that micronized organic fertilizers
have been developed. To denote which fertilizers are appropriate for injecting,
we have indicated them with an i for “injectable” and they are listed as such
on our Fertilizer Solutions Chart. Most fertilizers in this section are injectable,
but please note which of these products are dry and must be premixed with
water before being injected. Irrigation lines should always be cleaned after
fertigation by flushing with clean water before and/or after fertilizing. Use
Therm X70 (pg. 44) when flushing irrigation lines.

Humax Humic Acid Stimulates Growth & Uptake
f i
Plant growth stimulant and enhancer. Performs well when used in foliar
feeding solutions with other nutrients. Rates of 16–32 oz/acre or 1 tbs/gal
will stimulate plant growth and increase yields. Rates of 4–16 oz/acre will
increase uptake of foliar nutrients, especially Ca, P, Mg and Fe. Humax
enhances cell permeability, acts as a source of biologically active carbon for
leaf-feeding microbes, increases oxygen availability and reduces the surface
tension of spray water. Humax is applied to soils in water or fertilizer solutions at 32–64 oz/acre to reduce soil compaction and promote root growth.
Many growers band it under seeds to enhance germination at 12–24 oz/
acre. Humax can also be used at 1 oz/gal as a dip for transplants to stimulate root activity, reduce
transplant shock and as a seed soak. Contains 12% humic acid. See also Micro Hume.

Nu-Film Spreader Stickers To Extend Pesticides
Superior sticking/extending agent is designed to
lengthen the life of foliar-applied insecticides and
fungicides. This characteristic makes it a better
choice than Therm X70 if you need maximum
longevity of foliar applications. Forms a sticky,
elastic film which encapsulates and tenaciously
holds the pesticide on the crop foliage in spite of
rainfall, irrigation or wind. Also shields the residue
from heat and ultraviolet light degradation.
University research shows significant (up to 100%)
increase in the duration of biological insecticides
such as Bts. Use at 0.5–1 pint/acre. When insecticide and fungicide
spray applications are made within 30 days of harvest, switch from NuFilm 17 to Nu-Film-P. Nu-Film-P is a superior sticking agent but does
not have the long term extender properties of Nu-Film-17. Use at 4-6
oz/acre. Both products derived from pine. Operator I.D.# is required for

Injectors & Mixers
Mixers measure out liquid concentrates (fertilizers, soil inoculants, pest
control sprays, etc.) and mix them with the proper amount of water, so
all you have to do is turn on the water and spray or irrigate! The Siphon
Mixer is for gardeners who have low water pressure and water with hoses.
The Add-it Proportioning Fertilizer Injectors and the EZ-Flo System are
the next step up, accommodating low water pressure & drip irrigation or
sprinkler systems. The Young Mixer-Proportioner is also easy to use, but
is more appropriate for the frequent user who needs to be able to regulate
the mixing ratio (a feature unavailable on the first two mixers). The
Mazzei Injector offers the best value for the performance, but requires an
assembly kit for installation.

Add-It Proportioning Fertilizer Injectors Designed for home and garden use. Easy
to operate for either drip and sub-surface
irrigation or with sprinkler systems. Injects
fertilizer at a consistent, predetermined ratio
(water to concentrate - see below). Backflow
H
device must be installed before the injector
G
and a filter is recommended when injecting
fertilizers into drip irrigation. Injector does
not need a by-pass, as running water through
the empty unit will not harm it. Pint and
quart sizes use hose threads. Gallon size
uses ¾" pipe thread. Minimum pressure of 10 PSI is required. Number of
gallons indicated below represents the approximate volume of water that must
go through the unit to empty the injector. Larger sizes available. Minimum
required flow rates are shown in gallons per minute (gpm).

solution as it is used. Commercial grade components, appropriate for residential
or commercial applications. Attaches to hose bib; includes hose bib adapter,
tubing, tubing valves, and tank. Minimum flow 2.5 GPH. Injection rate is
adjustable, between 1:100 and 1:1000. Not designed for use under constant
pressure.

Mazzei Injectors
Low-cost, accurate injectors are capable of
higher flow rates than the other injectors we
carry. They require a bit more installation expertise, but
the cost savings can be worth it. Injector works using pressure
differential to create suction, pulling the fertilizer concentrate
steadily into the main stream of water. Injection rate depends on
the pressure and flow rates. Made to last, no moving parts. Assembly kits are
available for easier installation. Choose the one that matches the minimum
flow rate of your irrigation system, not your pipe size.

Young Mixer-Proportioner Simple, virtually indestructible, and very
accurate, these small to medium growers’
models are the best choice for home or

or spraying (soluble fertilizers, foliar feeds,
soil inoculants, or pest controls). Tank
comes lined with a bladder-type bag that
lasts several years. To operate, just fill the
tank with concentrate, dial in the desired
ratio (select from 1:30 to 1:200), turn on
the water and that’s it! Both models use
hose threads and are easy to disconnect.
Minimum flow rate is 2 GPM. Look through clear plastic
outlet to see if concentrate is finished. Add food coloring if
concentrate is clear.

Cover Crops
Invest $30 in Cover Crops in Fall & Save $139 in Fertilizers
come Spring
See our video - Cover Crops for the Garden and find out how to save money and
improve your soil & yields at the same time!
My 50’ x 60’ Garden Example:
The Premium Soil Builder Mix can fix up to 20 lbs of Nitrogen in my 3,000 sq.
ft. garden. All I need is 15 lbs of inoculated Premium Soil Builder Mix (15 lbs of
SCM120 is $19.35, plus $9.99 Pea Vetch Inoculant = $29.34).
If I inoculate & plant in Fall and till into my soil in the Spring, I will enjoy the
high levels of Nitrogen in my garden as well as other benefits that come from
increased organic matter and microbial life.
Alternatively, in the Spring, I could buy 500 lbs (10 bags) of Nutri-Rich 4-3-2
fertilizer (one of the best values with 4% Nitrogen) for over $139 to achieve the
same Nitrogen payout!

Cover Crop Mixes
We’ve perfected our mixes over the years and are
happy to offer the best, including organic options.
Pv Premium Soil Builder Mix Cool season legume cover crop. Extraordinary yields of nitrogen (up
to 290 lb/acre) and organic matter (up to 49 tons/acre). Chokes out weeds and
provides excellent habitat for beneficial insects. We developed this mix especially
for vegetable rotations and general cool-weather cover cropping. Soil Builder
is not filled with cheap grasses like other mixes. Contains the highest-yielding
winter-hardy legumes with cayuse oats added to stabilize the soil, and to nurse
and scaffold the vetches. Grows to 4’-6’. Seed at 3-5 lb/1000 sq ft, or 70-120 lb/
acre at a depth of 3/4” to 1” in September or October. In coastal or cool summer
zones, Soil Builder can be spring-planted. Raw seed, requires Pea Vetch or

Symbiotic Relationships Inoculants
Legumes work in harmony with a group
of bacteria (rhizobacteria) that live
symbiotically on their roots. These bacteria
do the work of taking gaseous Nitrogen
from the air and “fix” or concentrate it in
pink root nodules which then slough off,
adding Nitrogen to the soil in a form plants
can absorb.
Properly inoculated legumes can generate
up to 300 lbs of usable protein-based
Nitrogen per acre. Inoculating with
rhizobacteria greatly increases growth in
legumes, thus increasing organic matter,
soil aeration, and soil stabilization.
It is important to inoculate (coat the seed)
to ensure a rhizobacteria population.
Use the correct inoculant
Many of the legumes we provide are
preinoculated with the correct rhizobacteria
and a protective coating. For “raw” or
uninoculated legume seed, we highly
recommend you purchase the appropriate
inoculant.

Use these charts only as a general guide to help you choose the best cover crop for your growing situation. Remember that this type of chart has
inherent limitations. For example, although crimson clover is marked “Tolerates mowing,” you should not mow it in mid-late spring because it
needs to grow during that time in order to re-seed itself. Information provided is referenced from PFV&GS catalog and staff, our vendors, and
