A NOTE FROM CEO BONNIE WEIGEL
“
FOOD Share and
Friends Mobile Pantry
will not only provide
the opportunity
for wheels on
the ground for
the distribution
of food, but will
simultaneously
present nutrition
education and
recipes for healthy
meals.
Challenge and Opportunity. At FOOD Share these two words also signify our constant movement forward,
progress. As FOOD Share confronts new challenges in 2015, we are also at the forefront of new opportunities
to meet each of these obstacles with renewed determination. Alliances with partners in the community have
provided wonderful opportunities to discuss, collaborate and challenge existing solutions to the ever-growing
need. Through drought, increased need and higher costs we have found that our collective team of volunteers,
donors, the agriculture industry and business allies, agency partners and advocates have provided incredible
resources for the betterment of our community.
While the need in our county has not diminished, it has also evolved and become a more complex storyline of
neighbors and friends who are making tough choices. Many in our county are struggling with limited access
to resources to keep their households afloat. But this challenge of access has hope in great partnerships. FOOD
Share’s partnership with the Port of Hueneme and Wells Fargo is now resulting in FOOD Share’s first ever access
to a mobile pantry. With wheels on the ground FOOD Share can join with a legion of partners in the county who
provide mobile access to needed resources.
FOOD Share and Friends mobile pantry will not only provide the opportunity for the distribution of food, but
will simultaneously present nutrition educational material and recipes for healthy meals in conjunction with
partners like Ventura County’s Public Health Department. These powerful alliances not only allow our friends to
obtain healthy food and fresh produce, but also access nutrition professionals right in their own neighborhood.
Please mark your calendars; this amazing resource will be unveiled on Wednesday, March 25 and we would love
for you to see it in action and meet the talented team behind the scenes.
The introduction of FOOD Share and Friends mobile pantry in our county also provides a wonderful
opportunity to begin new conversations that dig to the core of hunger in our county. As we move forward
with the Feed the Line – Shorten the Line initiative, we now ask our hungry friends to actively participate
as co-creators and stewards of the solutions that result in family stability and moving toward self sufficiency.
Together with our partners we can identify solutions and develop community building models that can be scaled
neighborhood by neighborhood to meet the needs of our most vulnerable. These efforts strengthen and sustain
the entire community while ensuring no one goes hungry in our county.
Resources like the FOOD Share and Friends mobile pantry demonstrate the need to surround our hungry
friends with not only food but resources to help them back toward their American dream. The fact that 66% of
those households have to make the difficult decision between medical care and food is a reality that many in the
county face every day. Whether it is food, medical care or basic home needs, these numbers are now sparking a
larger national conversation not only about poverty but about the future of the family.
This conversation of challenge, opportunity and progress takes place because of partners like you, and we are
immensely grateful for the guidance, support and generosity you have provided. I look forward to a very exciting
2015 filled with new opportunities.

2013-2014 PROGRAM REVIEW
From a family garage to two warehouses that provide 34,000 square feet of storage, FOOD
Share, Ventura County’s food bank, is now in its 37th year of feeding the hungry in Ventura
County. In fiscal year 2013-2014, through multiple programs and 190 partner agencies,
FOOD Share provided food to almost 74,500 hungry friends every month. FOOD Share’s
dedicated and committed staff and volunteers work together to feed the hungry, educate
about hunger, and advocate for those who experience food insecurity.
Community Market Distribution (formerly Share the Harvest), a monthly mobile
delivery, distributed a total of 621,886 pounds of nutritious fruit and vegetables to 72,711
Ventura County residents.
The Senior Share Program provided bi-weekly supplemental bags of groceries including
protein, bread, canned items, fresh fruits and vegetables for 1,900 low-income seniors at 32
sites throughout the county during the past fiscal year.
Kids’ Farmers’ Markets offers a hands-on approach to improving the long-term diets of
children in Ventura County. The program includes a monthly nutrition education lesson,
recipe preparation and taste testing of healthy dishes, and a farmers’ market “shopping
experience” for children to take home free fresh produce and recipes. In fiscal year 20132014, 14 sites served an average of 47 youths per site and distributed 41,540 pounds of
fresh fruits and vegetables.
The Senior Nutrition Program delivered a total of 29,980 meals (an average of 2,498
meals per month) to an average of 117 seniors per month (age 60 and over) in Oxnard and
Ventura in fiscal year 2013-2014. Through funding from the Area Agency on Aging, the
cities of Oxnard and Ventura provide these programs for seniors in their cities and FOOD
Share delivers the meals.
Nutrition Education: FOOD Share’s nutrition education team taught children and adults
about healthy eating, shopping and cooking on a budget, nutrition labeling information,
and other important information. Nutrition education was administered through class
lessons, health fairs, cooking demonstrations and taste testing, Kids’ Farmers’ Markets and
nutrition education games. An additional 32,329 nutrition education materials provided
children, families, and seniors with current nutritional information and recipes.
FOOD Share’s CalFresh Outreach Program: The CalFresh team provides individual
application assistance at more than 200 sites throughout Ventura County. CalFresh benefits
assist in meeting client hunger needs and generate economic activity for the county. In
2013-2014, successful applications resulted in CalFresh benefit awards of $4,331,472 to
individuals, and generated a $7,753,335 return in economic activity for Ventura County.
