Hello San Diego BMW Club members!!! We are officially in July!!!!!
Now that its summer and ambient temperatures are going up, be sure to keep
an eye on your temperature. I don’t mean your BMW’s oil or coolant temperature,
I mean YOUR temperature. My good friend, Satakal Khalsa wrote a quick blurb
to Roundel a year or two ago regarding driver comfort and how Air Conditioning
plays a significant role in maintaining driver comfort. I personally notice a drastic
change in my body temperature when I drive, especially in my hands. I often
move the A/C vents towards my face and hands to keep cool and prevent sweat
during those “spirited” moments. Some would argue that the air conditioning
system is not necessary in certain circumstances and some even go as far to
remove the air conditioning system completely from their BMW. In case you
didn’t know, even race teams use air conditioning in their race cars. In fact, in the
American Le Mans Series, there is a regulated, maximum driver temperature to
help keep the driver from overheating while in the middle of a race. That means
the race car is fitted with air conditioning and is used strategically throughout the
race. Coincidentally, my E90 M3 has a feature on the A/C control panel with a
button called MAX A/C. Its purpose is to act as a one-touch button for maximum
air conditioning when in demand. I tend to use this feature while in the hot pits at
an Autocross or Track Day to help keep the cabin cool when the airflow is low. I
must say, it is refreshing to get that quick but cool breeze of cold air.
July and August are going to be busy! Good for those who want to socialize
and cruise back roads with other members. If you’re free on Saturday July 14th,
there are a few places you may be interested in checking out. My good friends at
HRE wheels are hosting their annual open house with their products on display,
guided tours of their facility and misc food and beverages. I have personally
worked with HRE in the recent past and this event is off the charts! HRE is the
home of the best wheel manufacturer in the country and great people to educate
you on proper wheel technology and selection. My other good friend Neil Daly
at Oceanside Motorsports is also hosting an open house. Neil has been with the
San Diego BMWCCA community for a few years now and has officially survived
the preliminary years of shop ownership. Neil invites all of us from the San Diego
chapter on Saturday July 14th in Oceanside to attend his open house, complete
with food, beverages and good people to talk to.
Wednesday July 11th we are having a Meet & Greet at Green Flash Brewing
Company in Mira Mesa. $5 per person, includes tour and guided tastings, be
there by 5:30. Sunday July 15th we are having a Back Country Mountain Tour
put on by the Illustrious Jim Llyod. Starting at 10:00am, meet at the Target
Parking lot off Jamacha and Campo Rd. Jim will lead us on a back road tour
with a stop or two along the way. Expect a final meeting point for lunch as well.
Saturday August 4th we’re having baseball night again! Starting at 5:35, Padres
vs New York Mets, field box seats on the 3rd baseline. And if that isn’t exciting
enough for you, we are having a special Autocross on Sunday the 5th. Official
format is to be determined but we are planning on a no contest, practice day for
anyone to come out that wants to practice without competing.
Check out our monthly board meeting (the 2nd Tuesday of every month) at
Giovanni’s Pizza on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. at 6:30pm. I recommend coming
around 5:45 for free pizza and socializing with other club members and guests.

entries this year, probably due to Bimmerfest
being held the previous day in Pasadena.
The judging team this year consisted of
Gordon Anderson, Paul Cain, Ron & Kimberly
Perry, Mike Murillo, Sarah Woerner, Jim Lloyd,
James Eberhardt, Pedro Leon, Ted Lange and

Continuous Lap FUN
on Sunday, August 5th
Register Online at http://sdbmwcca.motorsportreg.com
Online Registration will be open from July 14th – 31st
The first 20 non-BMWs to register are guaranteed a spot
W
e got an extra autocross day this Summer,
so we’re using the big West Lot just for
FUN this time! After four single-lap practice runs
with Instructors coaching, we’ll spend the rest of
the day doing the ever-popular continuous laps,
4 at a time, with drivers carefully spaced. No
pressure, no trophies, just an excellent practice
day to really get your tires warm and experiment
with technique. We have some ideas for a
creative course layout too… NOTE: The helmet
standard changed in January to require Snell
2005 or 2010 ratings. Check yours to be sure
it’s up to date—rentals are limited. We truly
appreciate BMW of South County in El Cajon for
their hearty support of our Autocross program.
With online registration, local drivers, longdistance travelers and non-BMW competitors
can reserve their spot, so don’t miss it. You
can register between August 14th-31st. Online
registration opens 3 weeks before the event and
closes just a few days before. Don’t wait until
the last minute because it’s still first-come, firstserved (with no online waiting list) and our 100
spots sometimes fill up in advance. We’ll still offer
registration on-site if any openings are left.
16
The entry fee is $65, including breakfast items,
lunch and beverages. You can pay online if
you register in advance at http://sdbmwcca.
motorsportreg.com, or register on site with cash
or check if you wait. You must be a BMW CCA
member to participate, and you can join online at
www.bmwcca.org in advance. Please print and
bring your membership confirmation if you have
not yet received your BMW CCA membership
card. We check membership of all participants
at the gate. Our Chapter autocross policy gives
priority to members who are driving BMWs or
MINIs. Members driving non-BMWs will be
allowed to participate if space is available. If we
still have openings after online registration, we
will allow registration on-site on a first-come, firstserved basis.
REMEMBER: IF REGISTERED ONLINE,
BRING PROOF OF MEMBERSHIP AND
ARRIVE BY 7:30 (BEFORE ON-SITE CUT-OFF)
TO KEEP YOUR RESERVED SPOT
July 2012 • Fahren Affairs
When you arrive:
1. If you registered online, stop at the gate to
sign the waiver and notify the Gate Greeter. Your
name will be checked off the pre-registration
list. All participants must show their BMW CCA
membership card. Those who did not register
online will receive a numbered card at the gate
in their order of arrival; take it to the Registration
table. There is no guarantee that spots will be
available for those who wait to register the
day of the event.
2. Empty all loose items from your car, then
go through the Tech Line and have your car
inspected. Bring your Tech card and you will
receive Tech and helmet stickers.
3. Take Gate card and Tech card to Registration
to get checked off for pre-registration or pay your
$65 entry fee. You will receive car numbers to
place on your side windows.
4. If you don’t have a helmet, you can rent one
from the club for $10.
5. Your entry fee of $65.00 includes one lunch
and unlimited beverages. Additional lunches can
be purchased at Registration for $7 each.

Gold Class for all Instructors,
opt-in drivers, and cars with slick tires
Fahren Affairs • July 2012
Stock classes permit any size wheel and tire;
non-stock shock absorbers, bushings and strut
braces; any brake pad material (brakes must be
stock-size), any air filter or cold air intake or catback exhaust; and naturally-aspirated cars may
use aftermarket engine management software.
Tires must be 140 treadwear rated or higher in
Stock. ANY other performance modification,
including but not limited to springs, “R”compound tires, and engine software for
turbocharged/supercharged cars, puts the
car in Modified. Non-DOT tires (i.e. slicks) on
any car place it in Gold Class. All cars must
be under a 92 dB noise level to be driven at
Qualcomm—and we’ll be checking. Our car
classes are kept simple so we can use the honor
system.
Women drivers and Novices are classified based
upon the car they are driving. We also award a
Women’s Class trophy to the woman with the
fastest time, and two Novice trophies to the two
fastest novices. This means women and novices
will be eligible for multiple trophies. For example,
a very fast novice could win a novice trophy and
a trophy in his car class. Remember, you are
only a novice for the first and second time you
autocross, and if you win a trophy you are now a
ringer, not a novice.
