February is here...already. The General Membership Meeting will be held Friday the
17th and will start at 7:30pm or shortly there after. This will be the first of 5 membership meetings to be held in 2012.This is chance #1 to fulfill the meeting requirement for yearend awards.
It is also very important that you sign in on the sign-in sheet so that we have a record of your
attendance. We had a number of people this year who, when informed that they had not met
the meeting requirement, tell us that they had in fact attended a meeting but must have forgotten to sign in. We even went so far as to review the meeting minutes and brags to see if there
was any mention of those individuals being present. As I ask at the start of every meeting whether everyone had signed in or not, it is your responsibility with that reminder to make sure that
you do so.
Due to the Agility Seminar being held March 2-4, there will be no Friday Obedience
Drop-in Training held on March 2nd. The Obedience Fun Match to be held on Friday evening
will go on as scheduled.
For those of you interested in used agility equipment, please be sure to read the Contact Zone article elsewhere in this edition of the Fireplug.
Thanks, Tim

NOCI Awards Program
At its annual awards banquet, NOCI recognizes titles and major awards won by its members by giving each handler/dog
team a plaque listing its accomplishments. Each year the plaque is updated to reflect new accomplishments.
As written in the club bylaws, this is what you must do to be eligible for a plaque:
1.
2.
3.
Submit a written record of your accomplishment on an NOCI score report form. Score reports should be placed in
the “Woof Box” in the club office, mailed to the awards chairperson (Judy Gemperline) or submitted online at tinyurl.com/nociscore. Score reports must be submitted by December 31 of the year in which the title was earned. If
you do not meet the deadline, the club will not pay for the engraving/plaque.
Provide one service to the club during the calendar year. Fill out the service form so we have a record.
Attend at least one general membership meeting during the calendar year.
Be sure to sign the attendance sheet whenever you attend a meeting. Due to the increasing number and expense of these
awards, the club will be adhering to these guidelines very strictly.

Nose Work
by Jean Baumann
I guess by now most of our training members have see the mountain of cardboard boxes under the table
in the obedience room and are still wondering, “WHAT are they doing with them??” The answer is simple.
These boxes are used in our Dog Nose Work class. Ok!!! Now...what in the world is Nose Work?? In
simple words, Nose Work is when a dog uses his nose to locate a target scent or odor. The fun part is
when we hide the food/odor in very unusual places and in things, and the dog has to find it. Thus we now call our class Hide and Seek.
This is a new sport in the dog world, and is spreading like wildfire throughout the states. The Midwest are is now discovering this interesting sport, which had started a few years back in California. There is a registry for those who want to compete. Yes, I said compete in
competition in Nose Work Tests. The National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) is the group’s name.
Let me try and tell you about our class in Nose Work and what the dogs/handlers are learning. When one starts in this class,
we start out using food only, no odor (that comes much later); a good foundation for the dogs to HUNT for the food is necessary. We
hide the food in boxes or in other types of containers. The dog can be let off leash to go search for the food. When he does find it, the
handler rewards the dog with more food/toy for his reward, thus giving the dog the incentive to successfully find the hidden food and
then get rewarded for doing so. We do challenge the dogs to really HUNT for their food in various places at the club. Not always in
boxes either. We have hidden food in various containers or no containers at all. Our searches have been in the back storage room,
bathrooms, and outside. The one place we have not had a search is on a vehicle, which will come later with better weather conditions.
Outside work is always done ON leash.
In a Nose Work test, there are four elements for a title. There is a container search, an interior room search, an exterior
search, and a vehicle search. The dog/handler team must pass all four elements of the test for that particular odor(s) to obtain a title.
Titles are: NW1 (Birch odor only), NW2 (Anise and Birch), and NW3 (Clove, Anise and Birch).
With nose work, handlers learn how to READ their dogs. Their body language usually lets us know that the hide is near.
Most dogs have a style of their own and it’s interesting and funny just to watch them respond when they find the hide. This is a FUN
class and all our dogs LOVE IT! The class has now been introduced to Odor-Birch, paired with food, and we have started the process
all over again. Since this is an ONGOING project, NO new nose work class will be started any time soon. Sorry!!! UNLESS we can find
another day/time opening and of course, very interested people. But everyone is invited to come watch our class on Tuesday evenings
at 8:00 p.m.
For more information on Nose Work, you can go to www.NACSW.net.
Clyde has always loved going to class. He can’t wait to get inside and walks in as if he just made the last payment on the place. The
problem is getting him to do something once we are there. Forget about heeling, figure eights, weave poles, etc., his idea of class is to
greet everyone, see what they brought for treats that night and to smell everything in the room. When the Nose Work class was described to me my first thought was “finally, an activity custom made for Clyde.” He still can’t wait to get in the building, but now he also
can’t wait to get in the ring. He pulls me so hard to get into the ring that I have gotten burns on my hands from his leash and twice he
has actually jumped the ring gate to get into the ring because he can’t wait to start searching. I now have a new problem - getting him
out of the ring when his turn is over and convincing him that it can’t be his turn all the time. I am thrilled with his enthusiasm and it is
so refreshing to see him with his nose somewhere other than people’s pockets and treat pouches.

I just wanted to write a quick note about our new nose work class. It seems that this class is Dylan's number one favorite. As most of you
know, Dylan is not what you might call a highly motivated dog; actually, the word slug would be a great adjective. However, all that changes in
nose work! We have finally found something he can excel at and love. He has taken this class so seriously, that when the UPS truck pulled
into the drive way, he rushed out, and jumped into the truck searching the boxes....and he did indeed find his US Bones package! (Of course
the driver nearly had a heart attack until he realized Dylan's charge was only to jump into his truck, and not at him!) Thanks to Jean for teaching this class!
Silvia Simmons
Gracie loves her scent training class from the moment I pull out her scent work harness. She steps right into it and dances around by the
door....let's go!!!! Excitement grows after we arrive at NOCI and she needs to wait for her turn to find the scent. She barks with excitement while
waiting and then finally it's time to go. You'd never know Gracie is 11 now or has had years of obedience classes and titles by the way she is
pulling me toward the entrance in the fence. Her nose is already twitching and her legs are pulling--ready? Go Search! As I release her from the
leash, she races out into the room hurriedly sniffing each box and plunger and chair she passes. Oh wait, suddenly she turns back to the bucket
she just passed and sticks her head into it and stays put. Good Girl, Gracie! You found it! After a few more "finds" she has finished for this
turn. Then the trick is to get her out of the ring for someone else to have a turn! Bark, bark, bark! It must be my turn again. Can't wait! Tuesday nights are so much fun!

Out with the old, in with the new. Over the last few years the AKC has changed many of the equipment specs for a lot of
the agility equipment. This, along with certain trends in the sport, has forced NOCI to purchase or needing to purchase
new equipment. It is a blessing and a curse. A curse in the fact that much of our old equipment is just fine but now not
usable for our show and it is a blessing as it allows our members a chance to bid on some of the old equipment.
At the February General Membership Meeting, NOCI will be auctioning off some of the old equipment. This will include
the 8ft Aframe, 15 and 20 ft tunnels, 22" spaced competition weave pole bases and a needs-to-be-repaired teeter. This
will be an open bid auction. Each item will have a sheet attached with a starting minimum bid. A person will be allowed
to write their name and bid on the sheet. If someone comes along and wishes to outbid the person before them, they
will cross that person's name off the list and write their own along with their own bid.
At the conclusion of the meeting, there will be a few minutes of final bidding allowed. When bidding is closed, all items
must be paid for. NOCI will hold your won items for you but you must make arrangements for pick up and transportation.
There has been a lot of interest in this to date so if you are looking for some used equipment, plan on attending the
meeting.
March 2-4 is going to be the Dave Munnings agility seminar. All working spots are filled. I am happy to say that the majority of the working spots and auditing spots are filled with NOCI members. As it was my intention for this to be a learning opportunity for NOCI members, I am extremely happy that many of our members are taking this chance to broaden
their agility horizons. For those of you who are attending, I will be in contact with you prior to the seminar to give you the
final information.
