President’s Message
Greetings! To all of you
starting another year of retirement, I hope you enjoy all the
relaxation and adventures that
you deserve after your years of
giving in the field of education. To
those of you just starting in this
phase of your life and new to this
retirement stuff, welcome aboard.
We are planning another year of
activities for you, with opportunities
for you to mingle with your former
colleagues and to meet new friends.
As always, we will begin the year
with our breakfast, at about the
same time your former colleagues
who are still slaves to the bell are
facing their new classes for the
first time this year. We have a new
venue, and as you will see from
the notice in this newsletter, we
will meet at the St Thomas Senior
Centre. For those of you who have
not been there yet, it is all on one
level and very wheel chair friendly.
Our other activities that are
scheduled for this fall are also
o u t l i n e d i n t h i s n e w s l e t t e r.
President Martha Foster
We have two requests of you. First,
if you have any friends that are not
members of RTO/ERO, invite them
to some of our functions. We would
love to have them attend and it
would also give them an opportunity
to find out about us. Secondly, let
us know what we can do for you.
Last year we tried two activities, the
trip to Stratford and the winery tour.
We did fill up the Stratford Trip at the
last minute, but the winery tour was
not well attended. Those attending
these two functions had a great
time. What would you like us to plan
for you? Day trips, overnight trips
and when would you like them?
We will have forms at the breakfast so that you can have input
into the direction of the planning.
If you would like, email me with
your suggestions. That will free
you up for visiting on September 7.
Looking forward to seeing you.
Note that the center pages of this booklet - pages
5 to 8 - can be removed as a section so that you
can more easily sign up for the Wellness Day. Do
so as soon as possible since space is limited.

Marg Hulls is leaving us - but not quite yet. She
will stay for a while until we find another volunteer.
Thank you for your many years of service Marg!
You and your committee have made many of us feel
better through your caring and your help. Read
about the recipient of the first Marg Hulls Award on
page 8.
Goodwill information can still be forwarded to Margaret Hulls or
any other member of that committee: Marjorie Hilliker, Linda
Perger, Mary Ann Nealy, Melba Marr, Sandra Andrews or Eleanor
Lyle. Marg is looking for a person to take over the chair position
of this group. She has a detailed outline of the role and will
assist. A vibrant organization always needs new personnel and
this is a very enjoyable way to become involved. Please contact
Marg or the president to find out more.
Presient Wayne Grosvenor
presents Marg Hulls with
the plaque to be used for
her Awards.

SERVICE TO OTHERS
Congratulations to Sandy
Westaway,
her committee
of RTO/ERO
members and
the St.Thomas
Library staff. A grant of $3,650.00
was approved for their work in
preparing backpacks to support
parents who are preparing their
children to enter school. The
backpacks will include a handout
with simple tips for adults and
books to target each of six literacy
skills. Nine RTO/ERO members
from all affiliates including four
RTO/ERO members who also sit
on the Library Board have supported this initiative. Once again
retired educational employees are
utilizing their skills and giving of
their time to create a better world
for children.
Together RTO/ERO Districts and
community partners have been
working on Service to Others
Projects for eleven years. Three
hundred and eleven projects
have been approved for a total
of eight hundred thirty one thousand three hundred and seventyseven dollars not including the
grants approved this spring. We
as an organization are focused
on a model of service for those
within our boundaries and in other
countries.
The application form for District
Projects will be available on the
RTO/ERO website in the fall.
Please inform the executive if you
know of a worthy activity in which
RTO/ERO members are involved.
A project can only be funded
once. The completed application
document must be received at
the Provincial Office by the close
of business on March 1st, 2011
to be considered by the ProjectService to Others Committee at
its meeting in early spring.
Scholarship:

a full or part time program which
will lead directly to a career in
teaching in Canada at the time
at which the Project-Service To
Others Committee meets to consider the applications(September

Service to Others in our Community
Our former colleagues can be
found assisting at the hospital,
organizing fundraising events for
worthy causes, delivering Meals
on Wheels, volunteering as a
driver for people needing transportation for treatments and leading/singing in choirs in churches,
for service clubs and in retirement
homes. The list is endless. What
wonderful models of caring and
giving! Communities depend on
their volunteers and their gift of
self.
RTO/ERO’s motto “Here for You
Now. Here for Your Future” is
manifested by its members.

Approval of this budget allows your Executive to develop several new and exciting areas for the
membership.
In 2009, we were able to subsidize outings to theatre presentations such as West Side Story at the Stratford Festival, athletic programs such as our long standing Golf Tournament and our really popular venture
into Curling. The intital 2008 Wellness Day was hugely successful. It grew in 2009 and from all appearances will really be the event to be at this year (on Oct. 18). Happily we are able to support the growth of
this most popular District event.
We continue to support the RTO Day at the Toronto Blue Jays and look forward to lending financial support to other day trips and outings.
As always, you will note a reserve fund of $4,600 has been maintained.

Wellness Day 2010
‘Expanding Your Horizons-Even Further’
Monday October 18th
To date we have 52 registrations for this edition of Wellness Day. Thank-you
to everyone who registered early, as it allowed us to adjust the line-up a little.
We have the same great Keynote Speaker in Jim Waite—prepare to let your
pride swell as we relive some of the highlights of Canada’s finest showing at
an Olympics. However, we have eliminated one workshop that didn’t receive
much interest and added two extra chances to enjoy: Barbequing (in Session
1) and Make-up for Seniors (in Session 2) due to their early popularity. We
try to cap most sessions at 20 participants, so some are getting very close. If
you are planning on registering do so as soon as possible to avoid being disappointed. When selecting your alternate choices (#4 and 5), please make
sure they are in different sessions to allow the maximum flexibility. The Template should be helpful in planning your selections.

THE EMERALD
ISLE WAS A
JEWEL
by John McIntyre
Scenic Ireland May 26th-June 8th
An Emerald Isle RTO tour left
the travelers with the Johnny
Cash tune, 50 shades of Green
running through our minds.
The tour began in Dublin and visits to
Trinity College famous for the 1,200
year old Book of Kells , St Patrick
Cathedral and finished with a dinner
outing to the Guinness Storehouse
with lots of Guinness to drink.
We traveled south to Kilkenny
through lush farmlands visited Kilkenny Castle and on to
Waterford, Blarney and Cook.
Most every one kissed the Blarney Stone and from then on there
seemed to be lots of blarney going on.
Then onto Garnish Island Killarney
the ring of Kerry and the Dingle
Peninsula with a side trip on a
horse drawn jaunting car then on
to Limerick where we visited Banratty Castle, drank mead wine and
had a medieval banquet- the next
day was very long for some of us.
We went from Limerick to the
Cliffs of Moher, Galway, Knock,
Drumcliff, and Bundoroan, then to
Northern Ireland where we visited
Derry and the Giants Causeway,
before arriving in Belfast for a
historical bus tour of the old city.
We finished our wonderful tour arriving back in Dublin tired but well
wined and dined throughout our trip.
Thanks to our guide Mary
and our excellent bus driver Nigel who navigated some
tough corners without incident.

PREVENTING.. OR
SLOWING..ALZHEIMER’S
In the last edition of Elginews I
outlined an Alzheimer’s checklist.
Here are some ideas for prevention of this horrific disease.
About 25% of all Alzheimer cases
are due to heredity, while 75% are
caused by poor lifestyle choices.
Obesity, excess weight, tobacco,
poor food choices, lack of physical and mental exercises favours
the development of Alzheimer’s.
. There’s also a higher risk of
Alzheimer’s with those who suffer
from Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Alzheimer’s is not however an inevitable consequence of
growing old.
Healthy food reduces the risks
of Alzheimer’s. Eating fruits and
vegetables on a daily basis can
reduce the risk by about 30%.
While drinking one or two glasses
of wine daily may reduce the
risks, drinking more than four
glasses may increase the possibility of getting the disease.
There’s an important reduction
as well for green tea drinkers as
opposed to those who drink black
tea. Experts also agree that saturated and trans fats augment the
risk of Alzheimer’s while Omega
3 and polyunsaturated fat have a
positive impact against the illness.
Daily physical activity will reduce
the risk by 30% and constant
intellectual stimulation will retard
the illness.
It is never too late. Choose a
healthy lifestyle to prevent or at
least retard for the longest possible time the onset of Alzheimer’s
disease.
PENSION CHANGES:
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Re-employment rules in the
education field for retirees are
changing.
Commencing September 2010,
any service to a Board of Education for compensation will count
towards a person’s 95/20 day
limit.
In 2012, all retirees will move to a
single 50 day limit per year. Also,
an employer must report all reemployment to the OTPP.
Details of the re-employment rules
may be found at www.otpp.com
Canada Pension Plan rules are
also changing. Commencing in
2012 the penalty for taking CPP
early increases to 0.52% per
month for each month the pension
is taken before age 65.
By 2016 this penalty will have
increased to 0.6% per month.
If you are approaching 60 years
of age, you may wish to watch for
the changes to CPP.
Craig Hall, 20, of Melbourne
is a student at Strathroy
High School.
He has Cerebral Palsey
and because he lives in the

stroller to be able to get outside and into the fresh air.
He enjoys video games,
off-roading in a golf cart and
camping with his parents

So save your aluminum tabs

Moving into the
Twenty-First Century
by Wayne Grosvenor
It is a major goal of this year’s executive to communicate more by
e-mail. There are several advantages to using electronic communication. Among them are:
1. It is quicker.
2. It allows for easy 2-way communication, so you can make suggestions and ask questions.
3. You can keep the information on file and refer to it to as a
reminder about times, costs and
location.
4. It will save money in postage
for items such as the newsletter.
We have several e-mails on file
and in August, we will test the
system by e-mailing you a notice
about the “Forget the Bell Breakfast”.
If we don’t have your e-mail on
file, the phone committee may ask
you for it when they call.
These e-mails will never be
shared with any business and will
be used only for communications
within District 41 RTO/ERO.
If you don’t wish to be on the
e-mail list, you will be able to
indicate that, by sending a return
e-mail when the first one arrives.
We hope that making use of this
mode will help us serve our members more effectively.
Also, the emails will be sent so
that your email address can only
be seen by
you, and not
by everyone
else on the
mailing.

Wine Tour in Vernon, BC?
One of our members, David

give a wine tour in his area. He
says hello to all his friends back

spend our winters in Brownsville, Texas, and our summers in
Vernon, Dave. Good to hear from
you.

There were tours of a barrel
room at one winery while at
another we had an extensive
tour on the manufacturing
process.
There was a delicious lunch
served at Sprucewood Shores
winery. There was ample time
to purchase wines and other
items at each winery. At the
end of our trip we stopped for
a coffee and headed home
exhausted but content. Look
for information in the spring
newsletter for another wine
tour.

Keep saving those pop tabs. A
new student will be selected in
the Fall. Recycling 1 aluminum
can saves enough energy to run
a TV for 3 hours; throwing away a
single aluminum can, versus recycling it, is like pouring out 6 oz of
gasoline. Every Sunday 500,000
trees could be saved if everyone recycled their newspapers. Recycling plastic saves twice as
much energy as burning it in an
incinerator.
Elder abuse was a major concern
a few years ago and still is. June 15, 2010 marked the fifth
year since the inauguration of the
World Elder Abuse Awareness
Day. Financial abuse is the most
common form of elder abuse. Another significant risk factor is
social isolation. If you suspect
a neighbour, friend or family
member is being abused, report
it to social services or the police. Elder abuse is never acceptable.
