Lots of scraps. Mountains of scraps. Even quilters who love scrap quilts tend to have overflowing scrap baskets, because we dread the thought of cutting hundreds of individual pieces, and so we go buy new yardage to make a “scrappy” quilt. The Thrifty Quilter is a simple system based on six shapes- four squares and two rectangles. I cut leftover fabric from every project I make into these shapes. The book contains 80 pieced quilt blocks that can be made using just a small square, a large square, and/or a rectangle. Each block can be made in two sizes, and there are six setting options included, giving you endless design possibilities. The Thrifty Quilter talk and trunk show includes many quilts made with blocks in the book, and some designs I’ve come up with since the book was published. For classes, we do a sampler quilt with a setting not included in the book. A Quilter’s Day Since 1999 I have hosted a one-day retreat on National Quilter’s Day. Each of these patterns is designed so that the twin -size top can be constructed in 6-8 hours. Participants receive a sketch of the quilt and cutting instructions in advance, leaving Quilter’s Day free for sewing! These patterns are perfect for weekend retreats...you can have a cutting session on Friday evening, sew the top on Saturday and still have Saturday evening and Sunday free to tackle UFO’s! Prairie Window The Craftsman Prairie View Mahjongg These are just a few of the Quilter’s Day patterns that are available commercially through Quiltwoman.com. In most of these patterns, the center of the twin size quilt will accommodate a 24” x 42” panel. Any size of Clearview™ ruler will work for any of these classes, but you must have this brand. I usually stock the 8” ruler.
