Kathleen L Bowers - Arizona Quilter`s Hall of Fame
Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame Recognizes
Kathleen L. Bowers of Lakeside-Pinetop, Arizona as
Featured Quilt Maker for September 2014
Quilting started for me in California in the early 70’s. I took a class after making three quilts and realizing
that I didn’t know very much about quilt making. After acquiring a few quilting skills, I began teaching
when General Motors moved the family to Las Vegas. “Quilt Shops” of today did not exist, so I taught
from home. That kept me busy for 5 years.
A move to Phoenix (11 mos.), California (3 years) and back to Phoenix (9½ years), had me teaching at 4
different quilt shops and joining many quit guilds. Quilting really came into focus for me after working
and teaching at the Quilted Apple in Phoenix with Laurene Sinema, and Janet Carruth, owners of the
Quilted Apple. Joining a local group of quilters fosters creativity, and instantly links you to friends and
can make moving to a new local so much easier.
Another move to St. Louis, MO. found me teaching, of course, and joining 2 more quilt groups and
several quilt bees. I was lucky enough to attend many national quilt shows and retreats, taking classes
from a multitude of talented teachers over the years.
Retirement took us back to Arizona and more importantly, the White Mountains. I began teaching and
working at Bear Hollow Quilter’s Den in 2002 and then at Amazing Quilts with an amazing group of
“quilt family” (including staff, customers, students and once again, a wonderful quilt guild).
I enjoy the creative process of quilt making and sharing with the White Mountain quilting community.
