Our October meeting will be a busy one since it will include the Challenge Quilts we planned to
display in September as well as the Yard Sale we had planned for this meeting. If you have a quilt to
show or items to sell, please arrive early so we can set up.
At both the August and the September Executive Board meetings we have been working on
clarifying guild policies. Some of these policies involve money. Our policy regarding Quilt Show
profits (gross income minus expenses and seed money for the next show) has been to allocate it to the
Member Education Fund (MEF) to support our national teacher workshops. This funding makes it
possible for participants to attend for a very nominal fee.
A policy regarding the profits from the Raffle Quilts is not so clear. In addition to other forms of
support, we have given monetary donations in varying amounts in support of our Charitable Projects
(mainly Safe House: $500 in 1999, $2000 in 2001). The Board believes that we should establish a
policy stating a percentage of the Raffle Quilt profit that will be allocated for Charitable Projects and
Community Service, and that the use of this money will include, but not be limited to monetary gifts~
This policy should reflect the will of the guild membership and therefore we will vote on it at the
October meeting.
There will be no change in the allocation of the Quilt Show profits; 100% of that money will go to
the MEF. The question is whether we should use all of the Raffle'Quilt'profits for Charitable Projects
and Community Service, or use a percentage of this money in this way and add the remainder to the
MEF.
You may have noticed the addition of "Community Service" to the Charitable Projects category.
Such an opportunity has just been presented to the guild this past week. The Athens-Clarke County
Regional Library has asked us to make a quilt that would hang during an annual story-telling festival
they have planned to begin this coming March. They envision the quilt serving as a backdrop for the
storytelling and as a symbol of the festival. Our acceptance of this project would involve an outlay of
money for quilt materials as well as the commitment of a group of members to design and make the quilt
- no small matter on such short notice. While the time frame is problematic, it seems to me a wonderful
opportunity to fulfill our goals of increased awareness of quilting, community education, and
community service. Anyone interested in taking this on?
The library also asked about a second quilt to raffle off. The proceeds would go toward the
funding of this event. The board decided not to take on another raffle quilt project. However, any
member who would like to donate a quilt to the library for this purpose is welcome to do so. Please let

Try this easy hint: Place 1 cup of water and 2 teaspoons of pumpkin-pie spice into a large microwave safe bowl.
Heat on high until the mixture boils. Cook for 3 minutes, then let sit for 15 minutes; and your home will smell
wonderful.

Madeline Hawley and committee will be in charge of presenting the
Fire,
Wind,
Water
or Chocolate
Challenge.
We will combine the September Quilt Challenge and the Garage Sale as the October Program.
Everyone with items to sell should bring those as well as their Quilts for display. We expect to have fun
with the quilts and think this will still give everyone time to shop as well as view the quilts. It would be
good if everyone would come early to setup their display and turn in their quilts to allow time to hang
the quilts.

We will have our Second Annual Yard Sale at the October meeting. Now is the time to clean out your
stash! Bring any sewing-related items you'd like to sell- fabrics, notions, books, tools, etc. You can
also include items you've made (things that didn't sell at the Quilt Show Boutique, etc.) We'll have
tables set up around the meeting room for you to display your goodies. Each person will be responsible
for collecting money from her own sales. Be sure to bring some $$money$$ to make change. If you
want to have the freedom to browse around, label each of your items with your name and price. You
can put an envelope or box with your name on your table for collecting money while you browse. Last
year the "Honor System" worked very well and all went smoothly. If you have any questions, call

There are still openings in the "Color by Accident" workshop Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 & 6. The
workshop fee is $20 (non refundable) with a $30 supply fee. If you want to take part in this workshop,
please send a check for $20 (payable to Cotton Patch Quilters) to Marilyn Osterkamp, 205 Auburn
Pkwy., Athens, GA 30606. The supply fee is payable to the teacher at the time ofthe class. The supply
list was published in the current newsletter. Get those checks in the mail now. If you have any

1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
\ti cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
\ti cup butter or margarine, melted
COMBINE first 3 ingredients in a large bowl; make a well in center of mixture. Beat eggs until foamy. Stir together eggs
and butter; add to dry ingredients, stirring just until moistened. Plac(~ foil baking cups in muffm pans, and coat with cooking
spray; spoon batter into cups, filling two-thirds full. Bake at 350 for 20 to 25 minutes or until done. Remove from pans
immediately, and coolon wire racks. Yield: 9 muffins.

We at Little Quilts are grieving for our country and the tragedy that touched all of us Tuesday Sept.
11tho As quilters we immediately turn to thoughts of what we can do to help. Besides praying for
everybody, we have decided to do something for the families of the New York City Policemen and
Firemen who are suffering with all of us during this time while they work tirelessly to recover and return
our country to some sense of normalcy. We are asking for your voluntary help. We would like to send
as many "little quilts" as we can to the Mayor of New York to distribute to the families of the Policemen
and Firemen. If you would like, please make a red, white, and blue "little quilt" not larger than 20" x
25" ...."Keep it Simple ...Keep it Sweet. ..Make it fast! We are setting the deadline as Oct 11th ... one
month after this national tragedy. You can sew a small label on the back with your name and address if
you want. Please send $1 with your quilt to help defray the shipping cost. We will pack and ship the
quilts we receive from you to the Mayor of New York City. There is no need to email us of your

There are many good things out there on the web for quilters. For those of us in quilt store-deprived
Athens, online fabric shopping is a great treat. The internet is also a great way to view patterns and get
some great online instruction. The best of all is an the free stuff! One of the best places to view fabrics
is E quilter. These pages are slow to load so I usually open another viewing window and switch back
and forth between pages. Right now E Quilter has lots of patriotic fabric, I saw some red / white and

One way to keep on top of all the changes on a web sight is to sign up
for their monthly (and sometimes more often) newsletters. It's an email reminder to go visit and keeps
you up on sales. Lots of online fabric stores have "design walls". This is a place to compare and match
up fabrics. Be sure to check out each stores links pages. Sometimes you find some great places to
travel. Be sure and bookmarks these sight so you can travel at any time, I have a folder just for fabric!
