While snooping in second-hand stores this summer in search of pre-World War II postcards and paper Kentuckiana for my personal collection, I came across several old Bibles with records going back to the 1700's. Only one place refused permission to copy. Maybe you can do the same thing in your area. Please don't feel limited to Bible records. We would love to have docu~ented accounts of your family, clippings of genealogical columns in your newspapers, 'historical pamph1ets-.;or what have you. While we print only Tennessee records, our library welcomes any material. Our Seminar with Milo Howard was most enjoyable. He is a delightful and humorous speaker. One of the greatest pleasures of genealogy is the people we meet. Several members from other states have stopped by to use our library and visit with us this summer. We hope to see still more of you. (See last quarter for address and hours) To all of you who are spending your vacation rummaging in courthouses and tramping through g~aveyards, I wish you full note books and no chiggers. Sincerely, ~~ .I//J1u~... "Ansearchin'" News -104- BOOK REVIEWS Reviewed by Herman L. Bogan RECOLLECTIONS OF A LIFETIME by Mary Katherine Killebrew (1902); Wife of J. B. Killebrew(written for her children) and Diary of the Journey From London to Adair County, Kentucky by James Fall. Soft covers. 180 pages, indexed. Order from Mrs. Clyde Lynch, Route 5, Franklin, Tennessee 37064. $8.00. This is a very remarkable and intriguing story of a woman's life in early Tennessee. An insight into the lives spent by our ancestors in the early days of our state arid country can be gained from this autobiography of a pioneer woman. Many names and places are mentioned. Are you searching in middle Tennessee for some ancestor? You may find some clue here. Mr. Fall's Diary is interesting and provocative. What an emigrant and his family endured on a trip to America is well told by Mr. Fall. RECOLLECTIONS OF MY LIFE, Vol. I by J. B. Killebrew (1897), soft cover. Over 180 pages, indexed. Order from Mrs. Clyde Lynch, Route 5, Franklin, Tennessee 37064. $10.00. Twenty four chapters and an appendix constitute a very well written description of a life spent in early Tennessee. J. B. Killebrew described ordinary activities of himself and his people so that these events seemed to be exceptional. His account of the young ladies of the 1840's and their ability to ride horses with grace and dexterity is exceptional and demonstrates the quality of his writings. However, wouldn't any young man of any age have thought such of the young women with whom they were acquainted? Perhaps so, but all would not have been able to express their observations as did J. B. Killebrew. RECOLLECTIONS OF MY LIFE, Vol. II by J. B. Killebrew (1898), soft cover. Over 250 pages, indexed. Order from Mrs. Clyde Lynch, Route 5, Franklin, Tennessee 37064. $10.00. Twenty four chapters and an appendix constitute the years of maturity for J. B. Killebrew. He has become successful in his work in the telling of an interesting phase of Tennessee and Southern History. Mr. Killebrew mentions so many names that his "Recollections" could be a gold mine for genealogists interested in Tennessee. BOOKPLATES, A selective :bibl~ography Of The Periodical literature ~y Audrey Spencer Arellanes (1971), hard covers, 512 pages, indexed by Subject, Artist and Author, (3). Order from The Gale Research Company, Book Tower, Detroit, Michigan 48226. $15.00 A Bookplate is a label bearing the owner's name and often a design, coat of arms, etc. designed for pasting on the front fly leaf of a book. The long fascinating history of Bookplates probably began by Brother Hildebrand, a Carthusian Monk gave the monastery at Buxheim a volume which contained an Ex Libris. This book is perhaps the first guide to the periodical literature of Bookplates. 5,445 articles published from 1822 to date are listed, briefly summarized and the entries from approximately 600 journals indexed. These entries are chronologically listed. The index of subject, artist, .and author is indeed helpful. II Ansearchin I " News -106- Last Will & Testament of Robert P.Currin, Lauderdale County, Tennessee, Probated at October Term 1857. Contributed by Winnie Miller " •••••••• in order to make the said Thomas Washington to execute this of my will. I hereby require my executors to deliver over said slaves Arthur and Susan, to the said Thomas Washington at Nashville immediately after my death, and that they pay· over to said Arthur out of my estate one hundred dollars to remove himself and wife to Nashville and bear their expenses until they can get fixed in Nashville to do something for themselves. I also direct my executors to give said Arthur a set of carpenters tools either to be purchased anew for him or given to him out of such tools upon my plantation in Lauderdale County at the time of my death as can be conveniently spared, in view of the difficulties incident to the emancipation of slaves in Tennessee. So as to remain in Tennessee, in fact they being too old to be sent to Liberia with advantage to them~ selves, and not qualified to establish themselves advantageously in a free state. I say in view of these things, it is apprehandedby me that said Thomas Washington may not be able to procure the emancipation of said slaves upon such times as they would wish, and believing also as I do that they are better qualif:i..ed to earn a living in Nashville than in the country or elsewhere in Tennessee. It is therefore my will and desire that if the same Thomas Washington should not be able to procure the unconditional emancipation of said slaves that he take charge of them as owner so as to protect them from molestation as slaves going at large or as free negroes which have not been singularly emancipated and that he superintend them in such a way that they may have the entire benefit of their own labour, and at the same time enjoy the protection of the laws; both as regards their persons and any contracts that they might wish to make for services to be rendered. And in consideration that the said Thomas Washington has promised me to stand in the said relation toward the said Arthur and Susan, I give and bequeath to him FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS to be paid by my executors to him out of my estate. And I also give to said Thomas Washington in case of his death before the said Arthur and Susan or either of them shall die, power and authority to appoint some person in his stead at his deatht:o occupy the same relation towards said negroes and William 6< Campbell of Williamson County, executors of this last will and testament truly invoking all others heretofore made by me, and I exempt them from giving security as they are strangers in Lauderdale County ••••••• " prov~s~on R. I have copied only those references where the husband's first name was given. The date is that of the document, so remember that the actual marriage may have taken place many years before, perhaps in another state. Judge of the County Cou.rt of Parry County: Thomas Whitwell and wife Melissa C. Whitwell', formerly Melissa C. Ward, Eli Dabbs and his wife Martha Ann Dabbs, formerly Martha Ann Ward, widow of Thomas D. Ward,' Dee'd, W. M. 'Haynes and wife Mary Haunes, formerly'Mary Ward, widow of Hugh L. Ward; heirs of Nathan Ward Junr Dec'd, Citizens of Perry County. . vs Alfred Kelly, a Citizen of Missouri, James T.Dikes and wife Sarah Dikes, Nathan DePriest, John DePriest,Legrand DePriest, Caledonia DePriest, and Thomas DePriest, minor heirs of Jane DePriest, formerly Jane Ward, Citizens of Maury County Tennessee, Perlina Ward and Benjamin Ward, minor heirs of Thomas D. Ward, Dec'd and Missouri Jane Ward, minor heirs of Hugh L. Ward Dee'd, heirs of· Nathan Ward, Jr., Dee'd, Citizens of Perry County, Tennessee, and have no regular guardian. Your petitioners respectfully show to the Court that Nathan Ward, Jr'., departed this life about the 18th of April 1852 seized and possessed of a tract of land on the waters of Marsh Creek, Perry County, bounded on the East and South by the Cedar Grove Furnace lands, on the west by lands of A. W. Sheffield, Dec'd, and on the north by the lands. of James R. Sutton, D. W. Evans, and M. C. DePriest, containirigby estimation one thousand acres more or less. Petitioner s~ates that said Nathan Ward, Jr. died intestate leaving ten heirs at law, to wit: Carroll H. Ward; Melissa C. Whitwell, wife of Thomas Whitwell; Jane DePriest, wife of Green A. DePriest; ,H. L. Ward; Elizabeth E. DePriest, wife of John R. DePriest; Thomas D. Ward; Hugh L. Ward; Houston C. Ward; Perlina Ward, afterwards wife of Alfred Kelly; and Martha Ward; that Martha J. Ward died without issue and that surviving children being her heirs, leaves nine ,distributiv~.shares at present. Petitioner states that these nine distributive shares or interests are at present held as follows: Melissa C. and Thomas WhitWell held one share by descent and Thomas Whitwell holds by purchase four shares, to wit: one from Carroll H., and one from M. C., aswd.ll appear f:rom Ex1)ibits (A) and (B) which are herewith filed, two from H. A. Ward as will appear from Exhibits (D) which is aJso filed with and prayed to be taken as part of this Petition. Alfred Kelly holds one share as, the heir .of Thomas Kelly Dec'd, heir of·Perlina Kelly, Dec'd, wife of Alfred Kelly, and formerly Perlina Ward. James H. Dikes and wife Sarah Dikes ,.formerly Sarah DePriest, Nathan DePriest, John DePriest, Legrand DePriest, Caledonia DePriest, and Thomas DePriest, minor heirs of Jane DePriest, formerly Jane ~ard; are entitled to one share. . " Ansearchin'" News -142- Perline Ward and Benjamin Ward, minor heirs of Thomas D. Ward, Dec'd,are entitled to one share, and Missouri Jane Ward, minor heir of Hugh L. Ward, is entitled to one share. Said estate is unencumbered except by claims for Martha Ann Ward, widow of Thomas D. Ward and Mary·Haynes, formerly Mary Ward, widow of Hugh L. Ward, which claims or interests said Petitioners Martha Ann and Mary ask the Court to protect. Petitioners would state that said land is so situated that it cannot be petitioned without decreasing its value and manifestly injuring the interest of the parties. Premises considered, Petitioners pray that all proper process issue.to bring the Defendants into Court, that guardian ad litem be appointed to answer for the minors, and that upon a final hearing the Court deem a sale of said land and distributive of the proceeds among those entitled. /s/ Horace Rice. Sol for Petitioners. United States Mail Service Contributed by William A. Burns Recently while abstracting and copying "Death and Obituary Notices" from old newspapers (on microfilm) of the 'HERALD and TRIBUNE' published at Jonesboro, Tenn., I came across a very interesting article·entitled "United States Mail Service", in the issue of Vol. XXXVII, ft2,dated Wednesday, April 12, 1905. The lengthy article contained many facts about the 'early service', however my abstract below will be rather short, just containing a few notes which I thought would be of interest to readers of "ANSEARCHIN'" NEWS. Although Jonesboro was the oldest town (chartered Jan. 17, 1779) in Tennessee and the First Congressional District (twelve counties), it could not boast of an established Federal Government Postoffice until April 7, 1799. Eight months later, on December 1, 1800, the G.overnmentestablished our "Rural Free Deliveries" (R.F .D.)., giving Washington County 31 rural routes. Today (1905), Washington County boasts of 34 routes. The 12 counties, makingupthe'First Congressional Distric;:t', today (1905), comprise a total of 262 routes. The carriers on these 262 routes receive each $720 a year, aggregating $188,640. that Uncle Sam, scatters annually among the people of the 12 counties. Washington County carriers share for their 34 routes total $24,480. annually. With the establiShment of the JonesboroPostoffice on April 1, 1799-- John Wa.ddell was commissioned the first Postmaster the same day. During the next 106 years, 24 more Postmasters were commissioned as follows: 2. John McAllester, May 23, 1799; 3. David Deaderick, Nov. 13, 1823; 4. Oliver B. Ross, Sept., 29, 1829; 5. Wm. G.
