Take action for the safety of your family and make sure you have working
smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
It's the first step to a safer home.
•
Count your smoke alarms: Ensure there's at least one smoke alarm less than 10-years-old installed on
every level of your home.
•
Change your batteries: Change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries annually.
•
Check alarms and detectors: After inserting a fresh battery in each smoke alarm and carbon monoxide
detector, push the safety test button to ensure they work. Conduct this test monthly.
•
Replace smoke alarms: Replace smoke alarms every 10 years and have a combination of both ionization
and photo electric smoke alarms to keep you alert to all types of home fires.
•
Change flashlight batteries: Keep flashlights with fresh batteries at your bedside.
•
Get the family involved: Develop and practice a home fire escape plan. Make sure family members, in
particular children, know what the alarms and detectors sound like and what they should do if they go off.

Start a Stress Journal
A stress journal can help you identify the regular stressors in your life and the way you deal with
them. Each time you feel stressed, keep track of it in your journal, you will begin to see patterns
and common themes. Write down:
• What caused your stress (make a guess if you’re unsure)
• How you felt, both physically and emotionally
• How you acted in response
• What you did to make yourself feel better
Learn how to say “no”
Know your limits and stick to them. Whether in your personal or professional life, refuse to
accept added responsibilities when you’re close to reaching them.
Avoid people who stress you out
If someone consistently causes stress in your life and you can’t turn the relationship around,
limit the amount of time you spend with that person or end the relationship entirely.

Everyone six months and older needs flu vaccine every year!
Remember, when a child is receiving the flu vaccination for the first time, two
doses are needed for protection.
Two to three flu strains have changed from last season
Vaccines that protect against four (Quadrivalent) strains of flu viruses are now
available
Both the injection and the nose spray are effective and there is no
recommendation for one or the other.
Just get vaccinated!
Children with egg allergies SHOULD be vaccinated
Families are an essential member of the vaccination team

Children’s Specialized Hospital practices
Patient and Family-Centered Care.
We understand that a partnership with our families is
essential in providing high quality care.
Together, we can best plan your child’s care.
132
We recognize the vital role that families play in ensuring the health and well-being of children
and family members of all ages
We respect each child and family’s innate strengths and view the health care experience as an
opportunity to build on these strengths and support families in their care giving and decision
making roles
We understand that emotional, social, and developmental support are integral components
of health care
We recognize that Patient-and-Family Centered Care leads to better health outcomes, as
well as more satisfactory health care experiences for your entire family
133
At Children's Specialized Hospital, families are a part of everything that we do.
Below are a few highlights of their involvement:
Family Advisory Council:
• Works closely with our management team to improve how information is being shared
with our families.
• Review many of the materials we send out to our families (e.g. welcome letter, contact info
after evaluations, first treatment letter, missed appointment)
Blankets for Babies:
• Our inpatient families are invited to meet other mothers and caregivers with Dr. Burke,
Family Faculty and Loving Care Agency to make blankets. The blankets are soft, warm and
washable and a wonderful memory and keepsake of their time at Children's Specialized
Hospital.
Service Excellence Performance Improvement Model:
• Facilitates an interactive workshop entitled "Ingredients for Successful First Impressions"
with our outpatient Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and
Psychology staff across all sites
134
Family Faculty is a group of parents and caregivers of children who have
received or still are receiving services at Children's Specialized Hospital.
Our unique experiences with our own families help us have a different understanding
and empathy for families going through similar situation. In our role, Family Faculty
provides valuable emotional support and assists families to acquire important
resources to aid their children and families throughout their stay and therapy.
Our role is also to empower families to become advocates for their children.
