Villa Tugendhat Address Cernopolní 45 613 00 Brno Czech Republic http://www.tugendhat-villa.cz/html.en/index.html . Villa Tugendhat in Brno, Czech Republic, was built for Fritz and Gerta Tugendhat, an entrepreneuring couple in the textile industry. Employing Mies van der Rohe, Mr. Tugendhat stressed that he was "utterly horrified by rooms full of figurines and blankets". The villa, built between 1927-1930, consists of three floors. On the first one (the basement floor), utility areas for maintenance and technical operations of the house are located. The second, the main floor, contains a representative living room, a library, a winter garden and a dining room. On the third floor are bedrooms and a bathroom. The building is constructed with a steel frame, which permits to create a spatial and bright interior. The whole interior of the house was also designed especially for the Tugendhats, with the use of sophisticated materials like travertine, milk glass, chrome-coated metal, stainless steel, honey-yellow onyx and exotic wood. photo: Helen Postawka . Casa del Fascio in Lissone Address Piazza Libertà 1 20035 Lissone Italy . The Casa Del Fascio in Lissone is one of many former Fascist institutions in Italy. They were built during the Fascist period between World War I and World War II. These institutions were designed to be gathering places on Saturdays to spread the Fascist propaganda. The Casa Del Fascio in Lissone is not as well known as the one in Como but is no less important. At first your eye is drawn to the pink marble platform jutting out of the brick enclosed staircase, which was used by Mussolini for his public speeches. Afterwards you realize how small you are in comparison to the huge public piazza that is still the main centre of Lissone today. photo: Marloes Faber . Project is not public! . Villa Bianca Address Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi 20030 Seveso Italy . Villa Bianca in Seveso, north of Milan, is a good example of Italian Rationalism by architect Giuseppe Terragni. The house is one of many he designed in Milan and vicinity, all of them experiments that show his research on shape, even in the face of more binding professional commissions. Terragni designed Villa Bianca in 1937 and played with its composition. The enclosed volume is still articulated thanks to the body projected towards the outside on the ground floor, as well as to the podium and the playful combination of protuberances in the crowning mezzanines (text from website Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea). photo: Marloes Faber . Casa Rustici Address Corso Sempione 36 20154 Milan Italy . This housing complex in Milan was built by famous fascist architect Giuseppe Terragni. He was important for the development of livable and cheap housing in 1930s Italy. Casa Rustica is located on Corso Sempione, an inportant thoroughfare to get into Milan's city centre. It has got a rooftop garden, to be used by all the building's occupants. . photo: Marloes Faber Project is not public! . Monument To The Fallen Address Via Gaincarlo Puecher 22100 Como Italy . In the 1930s, the National Fascist Party became a bigger and bigger factor in the political landscape of Italy. Their influence found its expression in modern buildings, in contrast to Nazi Germany which preferred traditional, stately architecture. In 1931, Giuseppe Terragni and his brother were asked by the fascists to design a monument for the victims of World War I. Their design was based on a sketch of the Italian futurist Antonio Sant'Elia, whose sketches showed modernity, dynamics and speed. Most of his designs were never built, but his futurist vision has influenced many architects. Made of Serizzo granite and Nabresina marble, the monument has a surface polished like a mirror and shows that the Terragni brothers have skillfully adapted Sant'Elia's vision. . Project is public! . Asilo Sant'Elia Address Via Andrea Alciato 15 22100 Como Italy . The main entrance is protected by an ample cantilevered portico, whose function is providing shelter for the relatives waiting for the children and for the children themselves as they throng to the exit. The ample, well-lit atrium is part of a larger covered space forming the recreational centre. The kindergarten is to be considered a home for a large family, which has encouraged avoiding long, monotonous corridors. Hence, the principal rooms, classrooms, refectory and offices are located around this atrium-recreational centre that lies at the heart of the building. In summer time, the glass wall separating the two recreational zones may be folded back to create one single, easily supervised area. A large ramp leads to the solarium located above the portico and is decorated with a hanging garden. This feature has a highly useful function of offering protection from the excesses of temperature and climate for the underlying rooms. photo: Marloes Faber . Project is public! . Novocomum Address Viale Giuseppe Sinigaglia 22100 Como Italy . From 1927 to 1929 Giuseppe Terragni designed the Novocomum, a modern apartment complex. He presented a proposal with very traditional sides to the municipality, which they approved. The scaffolding was placed and construction was started. However, the construction drawings which were presented to the municipality have never been received by the builders, which he gave a new proposal. Nobody could see what was developing behind the scaffolding. At the moment of presenting the finished building, it was a big shock. An awful building had risen up, according to the municipality. There was even a moment they considered demolishing it, until they realized that the avant-gardists loved the building and it made Como an even more popular destination. Terragni was looking for a good combination between surrounding landscape and the building. This Rationalist thinking ended up in a well-designed apartment complex. photo: Marloes Faber . Casa Giuliani Frigero Address Viale Fratelli Rosselli 24 22100 Como Italy . Giuseppe Terragni's last project before he died at the age of 39 was Casa Giuliani Frigero. The housing complex is just 100 metres away from his first project, the Novocomum. This block is much smaller but the façades are much more complex. The Novocomum was a benchmark in the search for modern forms and the Casa Giuliani Frigero is a well-designed last composition in Terragni's Rationalist oeuvre. . Project is not public! .
