conversation.
What is it you’ve done today that you’d like to be
acknowledged for? This question helps us feel appreciated
and helps us recognise each other,. With children, it’s a great
way to help boost self-esteem.
What are you grateful for today? Showing gratitude has
profound effects on mental wellbeing. When you constantly
show your appreciation and gratitude, you find more good
things fall into your lap
What act of kindness did you see / perform today? By
asking this question, you’re asking your children to be aware
of the beauty of the world. You’re also teaching them to be
consciously kind to others and to see kindness as a natural
way of being.
What was great about today/ What magical thing did
you see? Allowing someone to talk about something that
made them really happy lets them know that you’re
interested and involved in their life. It also increases
happiness levels by getting you focused on positive things.
These type of positive questions help to develop a
positive mindset.

Four Questions to Ask at the Dinner Table Tonight
At Park Ridge Primary School, we are committed to
embedding Positive Education into all aspects of our school
lives. I am sure that you have asked your child after school,
‘What happened at school today?’ or What did you do at
school today?’ usually the answer is NOTHING. Listed
below are four questions you can throw into the dinner

Specialist Awards
Our Specialist Awards are for Physical Education.
Congratulations to the following students who have worked
extremely well over the past week and for being interested,
active and giving activities their best effort. This week
presented by Mrs Lapthorne and Mr Tucker. Year Prep –
Brooklyn O, Year 1 – Jordyn P, Year 2 – Jack L, Year 3 –
Connor, Year 4 – Kaiden B & Harvey M, Year 5 - Cameron
L, and Year 6 – Nathan D.
Parent Helpers Morning Tea
Our teachers and students are extremely appreciative of the
large number of parent, grandparent and community helpers
who assist teachers. To show our support, a Helpers
Morning Tea has been organised for Tuesday 18 November
from 10:30 – 11:30 am. I am looking forward to catching up
and saying ‘Thank you’ for your contribution to our school.
Please put this date in your diary.
School Concert
Mrs Smith and the students are busily preparing for our
School Concert on Thursday 13 November. Information
with regard to the purchasing of tickets has been sent home
to all families. As we are only having two shows, we have
limited the number of tickets to two per family. I realise that
it would be great to invite grandparents etc, however,
another day for a performance at a larger venue would
increase costs dramatically.

Walkathon
A beautiful day greeted the students for their annual
Walkathon. As expected, we had a huge contingent of
parents assisting on the route and helping cook the sausages
for the special lunch. This is our last fundraising activity for
the year. Our PCA has done a wonderful job ensuring that
our fundraising targets have been achieved.
Rowville Secondary College Year 12 Farewell
On Tuesday afternoon I was able to attend the Rowville
Secondary College Year 12 farewell. I was especially proud
to see our ex-students enter to assembly under the Park
Ridge Primary School banner. A part from the obvious
increased growth as most of the students wore their Park
Ridge uniforms to the assembly, I was blown away by the
maturity and confidence shown by the students. These
students now begin the final stage of their secondary
learning as they prepare for exams. I would like to wish
them well with these examinations and future endeavours.
of a person without that person’s permission. We need to
educate our students and ourselves about the benefits and
dangers of the internet.
Our school is committed to participate in the eSmart
government initiative. eSmart is similar to the government’s
sunsmart program. eSmart is an effective road map to guide
schools in developing a sustainable whole-school approach
to bullying and cyber safety. Over time the school be able to
receive eSmart accreditation. eSmart was designed for
Australian schools by educators. It encompasses six domains
of action:
Effective School Organisation
School, Plans, Policies and Procedures
Respectful and Caring School Community
Effective Teacher Practice
An eSmart Curriculum
Partnerships with Parents and the Local Community
eSmart schools will be able to demonstrate they are doing all
they can reasonably do to create positive school culture and
protect children from cyber-risks, and in particular, to
address bullying and cyberbullying.
Regional Athletes
Congratulations
to
Heather L and Kate B
for representing the
school at the Regional
Athletics
Championships
last
week.
Heather
performed admirably,
coming eighth in the
high jump and Kate
finish 4th in the 200 m
Final and 7th in the
triple jump. Well done
girls!
Mathletics Champs
Congratulations Jessica H, Miladin M, Brodie S, Andre U
and Rory J for achieving their Gold Mathletics certificate at
Monday’s assembly.
Cyber safety
Over recent times, I have had to deal with a number of
internet related social networking issues. For those parents
who are unfamiliar with social networking, I mean
Facebook, Kik and MSN. Parents need to take an active
interest in their child’s involvement in social networking. It
is no good thinking that my child knows the right thing to
do. A 21st century skill that our students need to develop in
order to prosper in the future, are the skills of being ethical
and respectful. A person who is respectful will not post
negative comments about another person on a social
networking site, they will not think of posting photographs

BUCKET FILLER
Congratulations to Mikayla H for winning the Bucket Filler
award at this week’s assembly. Mikayla gives 150% in all

intrinsic gratification for her efforts and involvement.

Parents will not be able to apply for the Education
Maintenance Allowance in 2015.
The money will be allocated to eligible schools through
schools’ core operational funding mechanism, with the
neediest schools receiving the most funding. Not all schools
will be receiving funding in 2015.
This change to how the money is distributed was required
by the funding agreement with the Commonwealth
government to make sure Victorian schools receive
increased funding that will benefit all students and, in
particular, those from schools with concentrated
disadvantage.
The majority of parents who received the EMA payment
already elected to provide the money directly to their school.
If you are experiencing financial hardship, you can speak to
your principal about how you can access assistance from the
State Schools’ Relief Committee for clothing and uniforms.
The end of the EMA direct payments to parents will not
affect any other payment you may be receiving such as the
Schoolkids Bonus, which is provided directly to eligible
parents to assist with education costs.
If you have any questions about this change, please speak to
your school principal.

Mindfulness Activity from Sitting Still Like
a Frog (Snel, Eline)
Are you listening to me?
It is not always easy to really listen to what is being said.
Let’s face it, our minds are often elsewhere and not here.
But like looking, listening is something you can learn. All
you need is deliberate, mindful attention and to learn to
recognize its absence.
Listening to one another – a fun dinnertime exercise.
Everybody is given two minutes to talk about his or her day
or to share an important experiences, while the others listen
without
passing
judgment.
Listening with a genuine desire to
hear and understand what the other
is saying is absolutely invaluable.
Just like you strengthen a muscle
by working it, you can train your
attention muscle when using all of
the sense.

On behalf of the Knox Anzac Memorial Committee, I would like to invite you to the official unveiling and dedication of the
Knox Honour Roll Memorial on November 1st. This date marks 100 years since the first Australian ship set sail for the First
World War.
The memorial will contain the names of all the defence force members from our local area who have lost their lives serving our
nation. It also contains informative panels of the major battles that Australia has participated in.
The former Governor General, Major General the Hon Michael Jeffery, AC, AO (Mil), CVO, MC (Ret’d) will officially open
the Roll.
This memorial is the outcome of two years of work by the Committee, which consists of local veterans associations, the Knox
Council, and Knox Historical Society as myself as Chair. I was pleased to secure $200,000 of federal funding (an election
commitment) for the project.
The official ceremony begins at 2pm sharp, Sat Nov 1st, 2014 at the Tim Neville Arboretum in Ferntree Gully.
We hope you and your friends are able to join us on this special occasion.
