UVB, known as the “burning ray,” is the middle-length ray and it is also filtered by the
ozone layer. However, UVB rays do reach us, and can penetrate your skin and permanently
damage developing cells. UVB rays redden your skin and can cause skin cancer.
UVA, called the “aging ray,” is the longest UV ray that penetrates to your skin’s deepest
layers. UVA rays can cause skin aging, sagging, spotting, and cancer.
The risks differ for UVA and UVB rays. The exposure risk for UVB is seasonal and
peaks during the late morning hours to mid-afternoon. UVA, on the other hand, is a
more steady and constant threat to your skin. UVA rays reach the earth’s surface in fairly
consistent amounts throughout the course of the day and the year.
Sun Protection and SPF
Sunscreen is a major ally in the fight against UV rays and their skin-damaging effects.
Typically, sunscreens include ingredients that provide a sun protection factor (or SPF) for
your skin. The SPF rating shows the sunscreen’s performance in absorbing and blocking
UVB radiation. The higher the SPF number, the greater the UVB protection. For example,
an SPF rating of 30 means with the sunscreen on, you can stay in the sun 30 times longer
without burning as you can without wearing it. So, if your skin would burn in three
minutes, a sunscreen with SPF 30 (properly applied) would allow you to stay in the sun for
90 minutes without burning.
Protecting your skin from UVB rays is important. But what about UVA protection? Most
SPF ingredients don’t protect you from UVA rays—and mid-day sunlight is 95% UVA rays.
