The Beekman, also known as Beekman Tower a is a 76-storey
skyscraper, designed by acclaimed architect Frank Gehry.
Currently under construction in the New York City borough of
Manhattan, it is located at 8 Spruce Street, just south of City Hall
Plaza and the Brooklyn Bridge. The Beekman Tower will be one
of the tallest buildings in New York City. Developed by Forest City
Ratner, it will contain a public elementary school, which the
Department of Education will own. Above the elementary school
will be a 903-unit luxury residential tower clad in stainless steel.
The building will also include space for New York Downtown
Hospital. The building is slated to open in 2010. Its structural
frame will be all reinforced concrete (text from Wikipedia).

'Shop Until You're Blown Away' is the message of the Issey MiYake
flagship store in Tribeca, New York. It was designed by Frank O.
Gehry and his former protégé, Gordon Kipping of
Manhattan-based GTECTS. The designs of the eternally
experimental Japanese couturier have always carried a whiff of
chaos. 'The Tornado' is the name of the 25-foot-high titanium
column-like structure which dominates the Hudson Street shop.
It's pure Gehry - and yet if you squint you'd swear you're looking
at a classic pleated MiYake dress. Extending from a shaft
emerging from the cellar floor to a turbulent sprawl engulfing the
ceiling of the ground floor, the Tornado does energize the whole
room, both engaging and provoking the shopper.

An extraordinary testament to progressive architecture and
ingenious engineering, this stunning, 15-storey block-long building
offers magnificent glass curtain walls with a rhythm of clear
panes intermixed with vibrant hues of red and blue. Jean Nouvel
has conveived a building in which glass acts as both a presence,
as in massively scaled transparent sliding walls, and an absence,
i.e. the disappearing floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the
outside in (text from website project).

Storefront for Art and Architecture

.
Storefront for Art and Architecture is a non-profit organization
committed to the advancement of innovative positions in
architecture, art and design. Steven Holl and artist Vito Acconci
were commissioned as a collaborative team to renovate the
Storefront's aging façade. The gallery itself is a limited, narrow
wedge with a triangulated exhibition interior, such that the most
dominant structure for the Storefront is the building's long
façade. Seeking to introduce improbability and to puncture the
façade, Acconci and Holl challenged this symbolic border which
underlines the exclusivity of the art world, where only those on
the inside belong. Using a hybrid material comprised of concrete
mixed with recycled fibers, Holl and Acconci inserted a series of
hinged panels arranged in a puzzle-like configuration. When the
panels are locked in their open position, the façade dissolves and
the interior space of the gallery expands out on to the sidewalk
(text from website Steven Holl Architects).

The new home of the New Museum of Contemporary Art is a
seven-story, eight-level structure located on the Bowery at a
pivotal geographic and cultural intersection in New York’s urban
fabric. A composition of stacked boxes rising 174 feet above the
street and shifted off axis in different directions from the
building core, conveys the dynamism of the institution, creates
skylights that bring natural light into interiors, and is punctuated
by windows that offer city vistas. The building is clad in a silvery
aluminum mesh that captures the effects of changing daylight in
a vivid metaphor for the constantly changing dynamics of
contemporary art and the openness and permeability of the New
Museum itself. The building is the first art museum building
constructed from the ground up in downtown Manhattan.

.
Upon entering the store, which previously housed the SoHo
branch of the Guggenheim Museum, visitors are met with a
largely vacant space dominated by an oversized, round elevator.
OMA is said to have spent two months of research "investigating
ways to reinvent the retail experience." Perhaps as a result of
this, the ground floor only has a small amount of merchandise,
relegating the majority of merchandise and actual shopping
activity to the basement level, which feels cramped and lacks
appropriate lighting. The store's main design component is the
half pipe-like wooden curve that connects the two floors visually.
On the Broadway side, the curve has steps and serves as a place
for clothes to be shown. According to OMA, this portion of the
half pipe also serves as place for people to try on shoes, though in
reality the shoe department is under the stepped side of the
curve, and seating is provided there for shoppers.

This luxury apartment building on 40 Bond Street in New York,
designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is a sparkling reinterpretation
of the traditional cast iron and brick loft buildings of the
surrounding area. The 11-storey building contains 27 luxury
apartments and 5 townhouses, creating a new typology of
apartments which combine housing with the services and
amenities of a 5-star hotel. The façade is constructed of concrete
wrapped in blackened copper and luminescent curved glass. The
materials of the façade have been treated in numerous ways
which create an ornamental ground floor and shimmering upper
floors that respond to changes in light. At street level the private
entrances to the townhouses are protected by a large cast
aluminium graffiti-inspired gate. The building fits comfortably
into its context by reinterpreting the typical Noho loft buildings
and their materiality whilst standing out through the interesting
and unique use of new materials and manufacturing processes.

Flatiron Building

.
The Flatiron Building, or Fuller Building as it was originally
called, is located at 175 Fifth Avenue in the borough of
Manhattan, and is considered to be one of the first skyscrapers
ever built. Upon completion in 1902 it was one of the tallest
buildings in New York City. The building sits on a triangular island
block at 23rd Street, Fifth Avenue and Broadway, anchoring the
south (downtown) end of Madison Square. The neighborhood
around the building is called the Flatiron District after its
signature building. The Flatiron Building was designed by
Chicago's Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts style. Like a classical
Greek column, its limestone and glazed terra-cotta façade is
separated into three parts horizontally. Since it was one of the
first buildings to use a steel skeleton, the building could be
constructed to 285 feet (87 m), which would have been very
difficult with other construction methods of that time (text from
Wikipedia).

In 1987, maverick French architect Jean Nouvel burst onto the
international scene with a new headquarters for the Arab World
Institute in Paris. Over ensuing years Nouvel has woven art,
history, cultural references and new building technologies into
provocative architectural contrasts between inside and outside,
intimacy and the urban network, and has become renowned as
one of the most original designers of his generation. Nouvel's
latest glass and steel landmark, a direct material and conceptual
descendant of his Paris tour de force is 100 11th, a 23-story
tower described by its architect as 'a vision machine' with every
angle and structural detail designed to create visual excitement.
Approximately 1,650 different windowpanes comprise the most
highly engineered and complex curtain wall ever constructed. 100

Unlike conventional New York office buildings which isolate the
occupants, this building creates an environment of openness and
fosters a sense of working family. The plan is C-shaped. Two
wings house 12 floors of offices and partially enclose a garden
court separated from 42nd Street by a window wall. By enclosing
the roof and the open portion of the 'C' with glass, a large
landscaped court was created - a park for staff and public alike with trees, shrubs, and flowering plants.

Grand Central Terminal. Erwin S. Wolfson developed the project
in the early 1960's with the assistance of the architects Emery
Roth and Sons, Walter Gropius and Pietro Belluschi. When the
doors of The MetLife Building opened on March 7, 1963, it was
known as 'The Pan Am Building' and was the focal point of Park

Renzo Piano Building Workshop & FXFOWLE collaboratively
designed a new headquarters for The New York Times. The
building, located on Eighth Avenue between 40th and 41st Street
opposite the Port Authority Bus Terminal, unites the company's
employees under one roof in an exceptional signature structure.
The design incorporates a transparent glass tower screened by
planes of glazed terracotta tubes that seem to float above the
street. An advanced sunshading system, floor to ceiling glass,
increased ceiling heights, efficient lighting and mechanical
systems, displaced ventilation, extensive mock-up testing, and a
variety of additional sustainable features will ensure that the New
York Times Building will bring a new standard of comfort and
efficiency in high-rise office space. The building is 52 Stories

Seagram Building
Address
Park Avenue 375
New York New York 10152
United States
.
The Seagram Building located at 375 Park Avenue, between 52nd
Street and 53rd Street in Midtown Manhattan, was designed by
the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in collaboration
with the American Philip Johnson and was completed in 1958. The
Seagram Building was meant to confirm Mies' assertion that when
modern industrialized building technology is truthfully expressed,
architecture becomes transcendent. Ironically, the luxurious
materials used (marble for the plaza benches, travertine for the
lobby walls and floor, tinted glass and bronze for the curtain
wall) and the carefully controlled customized details that
pervade the building remind the viewer that this building is far
from being the simple result of rationalized industrial production

Lever House
Address
Park Avenue at 53rd Street 390
New York New York
United States
http://www.leverhouse.com/
.
When Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merill built Lever
House in 1952, Park Avenue was lined with solid masonry
buildings, packed one against the other, all pushed to the street's
edge. The Lever Brothers (manufacturers of soap and detergents)
erected the boulevard's first glass-covered office tower. The
tower stands with its narrow side towards the street. The slab is
counter-posed to a horizontal slab which floats on a series of
columns. The horizontal mezzanine is cut out in the center,
creating a central courtyard. Now, 50 years later, Lever House
stands as a model of intelligent architecture, and with it current
landmark restoration, it shines brighter than ever. The
restoration holds as closely as possible to the original. It is a
small building by Manhattan standards, but the glass-walled
skyscraper marked a turning point in American office
architecture. The fact that the tower now seems like just one of
so many office towers shows how much it has been copied.

MoMa Museum of Modern Art
Address
West 53 Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues 11
New York New York 10019-5497
United States
http://www.moma.org/
.
Founded in 1929 as an educational institution, The Museum of
Modern Art is dedicated to being the foremost museum of modern
art in the world. Japanese architect Taniguchi won a competition
in 1997 to redesign the MoMa, beating out ten other
internationally renowned architects, including Rem Koolhaas,
Bernard Tschumi, and Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. The
MoMA commission was his first work outside Japan. Taniguchi's
beautiful and bold design reflects the unique vitality of midtown
Manhattan and sensitively draws upon and transforms the
language of modernism. Highlights include larger, more flexible,
sky-lit galleries for contemporary art; architecturally distinctive
galleries for masterpieces of modern art; and prominent and
more comprehensive areas for study, research, and educational
endeavors.

American Folk Art Museum
Address
West 53rd Street 45
New York New York 10019
United States
http://www.folkartmuseum.org/
.
The American Folk Art Museum is clad in sixty-three lightly
textured tombasil panels (a white bronze alloy). The building is
surrounded on the front and back sides by sites owned by the
Museum of Modern Art. The façade is designed to make a strong
but quiet statement of independence. The lustrous, sculptural
façade is the product of a manual fabrication process evocative
of the hands-oriented approach characteristic of folk art; its
panels are cast by pouring molten metal directly into gated forms
on the concrete floor of the foundry. The faceted panels, which
appear stonelike and metallic at the same time, create different
visual effects catching the light of the sun as it rises and sets,
east and west along 53rd Street. Seven of the eight levels of the
new building are entirely dedicated to public space. The galleries
on the four top floors of the building vary in scale from intimate
spaces to allow for a personalized art experience to open areas
for the display of larger works.

Apple Store Fifth Avenue
Address
5th Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets 767
New York New York NY 10153
United States
http://www.apple.com/retail/fifthavenue/
.
Apple's second Manhattan retail store is located at 767 Fifth
Avenue, the prominent site near FAO Schwarz and Bergdorf
Goodman provides views of Central Park. The store occupies the
underground retail concourse of the General Motors Building, with
entry from the plaza level above. With this design, New York has
a new public space. Designers Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and
structural engineers Eckersly O'Callahan (glass elements) in
collaboration with Apple used Apple Stores' signature structural
glass vertical circulation to entice plaza level passersby down to
the store's underground main level. The 32-foot structural glass
cube marking the store's entrance makes a bold architectural
statement. Housing a transparent glass elevator wrapped by a
circular glass stair, the transparent cube beckons potential
customers down to the retail level below. By day it is a skylight
bringing natural light underground, while at night the lighted
cube is a sign.

A consortium of civic leaders and others led by, and under the
initiative of John D. Rockefeller III, built Lincoln Center as part of
the "Lincoln Square Renewal Project" during Robert Moses's
program of urban renewal in the 1950s and 1960s. Respected
architects were contacted to design the major buildings on the
site, and over the next thirty years the previously blighted area
around Lincoln Center became a new cultural hub.

Wythe hotel Brooklyn
Address
Wythe Ave. at N. 11th Williamsburg 80
New York New York NY 11249
United States
http://wythehotel.com/
.
Wythe Hotel started with the discovery of an old factory on the
Brooklyn waterfront. Built in 1901 this former factory the
Weidmann Cooperage (Theobald Engelhardt, architect) has been
preserved, renovated, and turned our historically industrial
building into a hotel with restaurant. An airy 72-room hotel in he
Williamsburg neighborhood, just across the river from Manhattan.
It has what you'd expect in a cool Brooklyn hotel - original brick,
bikes for borrowing, an old-school-minimalist aesthetic - with a
Manhattan skyline view. While the skeleton of the original
building remained relatively untouched, a three-story add-on by
architect Morris Adjmi maximizes skyline-facing views and allows
for an L-shaped rooftop terrace and cocktail bar.
