Partial restrictions on using Panasonic digital video cameras to play AVCHD motion images recorded with the DMC-GH2.
•AVCHD motion images recorded with the image quality set to SH/H/L mode (1280 × 720) cannot be played on AVCHD-compatible digital
video cameras. •AVCHD motion images recorded with AVCHD-compatible digital video cameras cannot be played on the DMC-GH2.
•More detailed information is available on our support site: http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc
•About the performance of Face Recognition function
Recognition performance varies greatly depending on shooting conditions, i.e., according to factors such as angles, facial expression
and lighting, so operation under all conditions cannot be guaranteed. Because the camera searches for faces that are similar to
registered faces, there are cases where the faces are not correctly recognized when the registered image and the shooting image
varies much. When facial characteristics are similar, particularly between parents and their children or brothers and sisters, the
camera may not distinguish the faces.
•AVCHD motion images recorded onto an SD Memory Card or a DVD disc cannot be played from a device that does not support the
AVCHD standard. •AVCHD and AVCHD logos are trademarks of Panasonic Corporation and Sony Corporation. AVCHD is a highdefinition (HD) digital video recording / playback format jointly established by Panasonic Corporation and Sony Corporation. For more

The highly popular DMC-GH1 that shoots full HD movies has now evolved to
a level that far exceeds expectations. In addition to providing even higherquality movies, the new model offers dramatically improved still-image
performance. Appearing as the flagship model of the LUMIX G series with
advanced functions and high performance in an elegant new body, the
DMC-GH2 maintains the Micro Four Thirds System standard advantages
of compactness and light weight, while providing even greater shooting
enjoyment. Camera performance has advanced with intuitive touchscreen control, a new 16.05-megapixel Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine
FHD. Photos are more precise. Movies are smoother than ever before. An
outstandingly agile focus exceeds the speed of phase difference AF while
maintaining the accuracy that only contrast AF can offer. These features
respond precisely to your intent, allowing the imagination to take flight as the
subject is framed. The DMC-GH2 – a truly creative machine.

The Light Speed AF captures even fleeting moments with razor-sharp precision.
And a new Live MOS sensor and image processing engine render even single grains of sand with remarkable clarity.
The World’s Fastest Level of Light Speed AF
The DMC-GH2 precisely
captures moving subjects
at higher speeds than other
models can. It features
the world’s fastest level Light Speed AF
of approximately 0.1 second,* which is
achieved by reducing the detection time for
focusing by doubling the drive speed from
60 frames per second to 120 frames per
second. Both the accuracy and the speed
of the advanced contrast AF system in the
DMC-GH2 far exceed high-end digital SLRs
with phase difference AF.
Fast Start-up Time
High-speed starts let you capture decisive shots,
like the curve action in a dynamic motocross
race. You won’t miss a thing.
Conventional
AF System
* This effect cannot be guaranteed under all conditions.
5 fps Burst Shooting with High Resolution
Light Speed AF
* The time for focusing on the subject is measured using
the DMC-GH2 mounted with the LUMIX G VARIO HD 14140mm / F4.0- 5.8 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. (H-VS014140)
lens** and moving the lens position from “infinity” to “2m.”
The zoom position is in the wide-angle range. A Panasonic
measurement method is used.
** Firmware must be updated to Version 1.3 or later.
* In high-speed burst shooting at 40 fps, the picture size is
a maximum of 4 megapixels (4:3), 3.8 megapixels (3:2), 2
megapixels (16:9) or 3 megapixels (1:1).
16.05-megapixel Live MOS Sensor
High-sensitivity Shooting up to ISO12800
The newly developed 16.05-megapixel
multi-aspect Live MOS sensor adopts the
high-speed digital vMaicovicon. A dedicated
process exclusively for the vMaicovicon
of the DMC-GH2 was newly developed by
applying a top-class high-performance
transistor and the interconnection process
required for the high-speed operation of a
digital circuit for a low-noise photodiode.
As a result, both high resolution and an
excellent S/N (Signal-to-Noise) ratio are
achieved with an improvement of more than
3 dB in noise and double sensitivity.
The Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine FHD have
been totally refined to raise camera performance
and render stunning images with high resolution,
beautiful gradation and high sensitivity.
A maximum sensitivity setting of ISO12800 allows
shooting in extremely dark places.
Optimized Exposure
with Intelligent D-range Control
The new Intelligent D-range Control offers
even more natural results by optimizing the
exposure for each part of the image, preventing
blocked shadows and blown highlights and
helping to ensure that gradation and details are
reproduced beautifully, including the blue color
of the sky. An automatic backlight compensation
function is activated whenever the camera
detects that the subject is backlit.
High-speed, High-performance Venus Engine FHD
The Venus Engine FHD
features exceptionally
advanced signal processing
capabilities in both photo
and movie recording, and achieves an
exceptional noise-reduction performance.
The Venus Engine FHD also processes
a large number of signals at high speed,
making it possible to record high resolution
consecutive shots and full HD movies.
The DMC-GH2 automatically identifies parts with
outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation
areas, and optimizes the edge emphasis on the
outlines and detailed texture areas while using
the Venus Engine FHD noise reduction process to
make the soft gradation areas smoother. You can
capture stunning images with details you’ve never
seen before.
Original LUMIX Multiple Aspect Ratios
A Variety of Auto Focus Modes
Using only 16.05 megapixels of the total
18.31-megapixel Live MOS sensor gives the
DMC-GH2 a multiple aspect ratio capability.
This lets you shoot using a 4:3 aspect ratio, a
3:2 aspect ratio, or the 16:9 aspect ratio that is
optimal for HDTV playback, while maintaining
the same angle of view. Unique compositions are
also possible using a 1:1 aspect ratio.*
The contrast AF system* gives the LUMIX G Micro
System a variety of auto focus modes, which lets
you set the frame and focusing position virtually
anywhere you want.
* The Multi-aspect ratio function is not available for a 1:1
aspect ratio.
6
The DMC-GH2 can fire off up to approx. 5
frames per second in full 16.05-megapixel
resolution with its mechanical shutter. Even
higher-speed burst shooting is possible with the
DMC-GH2 when the electronic shutter is used
– 40 fps at 4-megapixel resolution.* Great for
capturing race cars and other subjects that are
difficult to catch with the naked eye.

1920 x 1080 60i (NTSC) / 50i (PAL) Full HD Movies
There are always
two options to record
spur-of-the-moment
scenes – high-quality
photos or movies. You
can simply choose the
one that saves your precious memories
most beautifully with the DMC-GH2.
The AVCHD format features almost
twice the recording time in HD quality
than the conventional Motion JPEG. And
now, the DMC-GH2 can record highresolution full HD 1,920 x 1,080 movies
in astonishingly smooth 60i (NTSC) / 50i
(PAL), doubling the sensor output from
24p / 25p to 60p / 50p.
* Motion images can be
recorded continuously for up to
29 min 59 sec
in European PAL areas.

More Creative Shooting with Color Control
for Movies Too
You can adjust settings, such as color, with the
Film mode just like when you choose films. Film
mode is available when shooting both photos
and movies. You can also save two customized
settings as My Film settings, so you can recall
them and continue shooting with the same
setting as before. To
make color setting
easier, My Color mode
lets you make settings
for each image from a
total of 7 unique preset
modes.

24P Cinema Mode with 24Mbps Recording
The DMC-GH2 supports 1080/24p with 24
Mbps, the highest in the AVCHD format,
to bring impressive images to movies. In
addition, the newly added Cinema mode
option (selectable in Film mode) gives
movies a rich, cinema-like gradation.
The Manual Movie mode lets you set the shutter
speed and aperture manually. Changing the
shutter speed brings special effects to movies,
and is especially suitable for shooting fastmoving subjects. The
ability to control the
aperture is convenient
when there are several
subjects at different
distances and it is
desired to have each of
them stand out.
Motion Picture Button
A special, dedicated button on the top lets you
instantly start recording movies while shooting
photos without having to make any extra
settings.
High-quality Sound
Normal
A stereo microphone records dynamic, trueto-life stereo audio that brings out the power
of your HD movies. In addition, a silence design
helps suppress lens drive noise. The DMC-GH2
supports the optional Stereo Microphone
DMW-MS1, which clearly captures distant
sounds in superb quality
to make the HD movies
even more lifelike.

Time Expression with Variable Movie Mode
Image recording fun is more flexible with
the DMC-GH2. The new Variable Movie

Live View during Movie Recording
While shooting an HD movie,
simply press the shutter button and
the camera will shoot a photo with
high 14-megapixel resolution as
it continues to record your movie.
This makes sure that you don’t
miss those decisive moments with
either photos or movies, or both.
The Touch AF in movie recording
also lets you enjoy professional-like
rack focusing. By simply pointing
the DMC-GH2 at the subject, the
focus shifts to the subject to make
it stand out. The DMC-GH2 lets you
enjoy a new dimension in movie
expression without requiring
advanced shooting skills.
The DMC-GH2 is newly capable of
outputting Live View images to an
external monitor via an optional
HDMI mini cable, which makes
it ideal for professional movie
recording where each movie must
be carefully confirmed.

If dust or other foreign matter gets inside the
camera when you’re changing lenses, it could
cling to the image sensor and show up as a spot
in your images. The Dust Reduction System in
the DMC-GH2 helps eliminate this possibility
by placing a Supersonic Wave Filter (SSWF)
in front of the Live MOS sensor. The filter
vibrates around 50,000 times per second to
repel dust and other particles without affecting
the camera’s internal mechanisms, helping to
maintain superb image quality.

By introducing the world’s first
digital interchangeable lens to
make 3D shooting possible with
an interchangeable lens system
camera,* Panasonic proposes
high-quality 3D shooting with the
DMC-GH2. This new compact
3D-capable interchangeable lens,
LUMIX G 12.5mm / F12, allows easier
handling and instant 3D shooting
without requiring any special 3D
structure. It produces 3D images
without distortion or time lag
between the left and right images,
even for moving objects. The 3D
images, even close-ups, taken with
this lens are easy on the eyes when
viewed on a VIERA 3D TV. Panasonic
achieved a breakthrough by adding
this unprecedented, photographic
expression to the DMC-GH2, with
both innovative technology and easy
operation.

A Breakthrough in Size and Weight:
Mirrorless Structure
A Digital Design that Delivers
Beautiful Images from Corner to Corner
High-precision, High-speed
Contrast Auto Focus
The LUMIX G Micro System's mirrorless
structure achieves an extremely
compact size and lightweight, cutting
the flange focal distance almost in half
and reducing the body mount radius by 6 mm. You
get breathtaking pictures with superior mobility,
thanks to an image sensor that's identical in size to
larger Four Thirds System standard cameras.
LUMIX G lenses are exclusively designed for digital
use, so that light can enter only from straight
ahead. You get superb rendering, with images
that are bright, sharp and vivid all the way to the
corners.
The LUMIX G Micro System uses a contrast AF
system, which maximizes the use of Full-time Live
View. Panasonic expanded the number of mount
signal contacts from 9 (the number used in the Four
Thirds System standard)
to 11, to improve data
transmission efficiency
between lens and body.
This helps to achieve a
contrast AF with levels
of precision and speed
never before seen in a
