A life soundtrack
is invaluable

I’m not afraid to admit that I
have a couple of Taylor Swift
songs on my iPod. They’re
mixed in with a catchy Nicki
Minaj tune, a hit from Britney
Spears and a few other artists
not many men will admit listening to.
Of the hundreds of songs
on shuffle, each one reminds
me of a special moment of my
life. My iPod is invaluable to
me, and not because of the
dollars I spent on the music.
There’s no amount of money
that could represent the life I
have experienced to date.
My life’s soundtrack can be
found on my iPod.
It’s so unique that there’s
little doubt another person on
the planet would have a life
soundtrack identical to mine.
That’s part of what makes my
life soundtrack such a treasured possession.
What’s on your life soundtrack? What songs made the
cut? What criteria is required
to make your list?
I love to travel and experience life off the beaten path.
While I document many of my
travels and encounters
through writing, I find that
songs add that missing element. While the song is playing, I can close my eyes (not
while driving) and the music
takes me back to that moment of my life.
For example, I interviewed
New York Yankees icon Derek
Jeter a few years ago at the
team’s spring training complex in Tampa, Fla. On a natural high after I had talked with
one of the game’s all-time
greats, I drove to my hotel and
tuned into a local radio station. Nicki Minaj’s ‘Moment
for Life’ was playing. I had
never expressed an interest in
her music, but for some reason, I didn’t change the dial
on this day.
“In this very moment I’m
king,” is one of the opening
lines to the tune. The chorus
includes, “I wish that I could
have this moment for life... in
this moment I just feel so
alive.”
That’s exactly how I felt the
seconds after I talked with
Jeter. And every time I hear
this song, it reminds me of
that moment I had tears in
my eyes, overwhelmed with
emotion, driving down the
Dale Mabry Highway in
Tampa.
To explain - or perhaps defend - my other questionable
selections, Taylor Swift’s
music reminds me of my wife,
who appreciates the sounds
of the world’s most popular
pop star. A Britney Spears
song, ‘Till the World Ends’,
takes me back to a time when
I was riding the subway in
New York and a group of
teenagers began breakdancing on the train. The song
they were dancing to was Ms.
Spears’ tune. It was one of my
‘Welcome to New York’ moments.
That same subway ride
took me to a neighbourhood
in Brooklyn where I played
pick-up basketball with some
locals. The music blaring from
the ghetto blaster sitting next
to the court featured plenty of
inner-city flavour. Rap artist
Fabolous and ‘My Time’, along
with Q-Tip and even some
classic Michael Jackson
remixes done by mixmasters I
was shooting hoops with.

The judgiest Men in Moose jaw
“Ohhhhhh Moose Jaw!”
Nick Murray often starts
his YouTube show OMJ (Oh
Moose Jaw) with a disapproving tone that resembles a
child being scolded.
Back in May, Murray and
Chris Holoien created their
own news commentary
show that tackles everything
Moose Jaw-related. From the
hyperbaric chamber to
Moose Jaw’s crime, both
men, in their early 30s, have
a lot to say about the city,
and a lot of it is not nice. But
that’s the point.
“We’re controversial and
we do it on purpose,” said
Murray. “I’m not going to say
something that’s too disgustingly controversial but I feel if
it’s important to the story I’m
going to say it and I’m not
going to back down. I don’t
fall for this politically correct
culture.”
Murray is the grumpy one
of the pair who listens to Napalm Death and Cattle Decap-
itation. Originally from Tillsonburg, ON, Murray moved
to Moose Jaw six years ago
after following a woman to
the city.
Holoien, the more reasonable one, is born and raised in
Moose Jaw and prefers hiphop and Beyoncé.

“At the end of the day we’re
a commentary show. There’s
nothing wrong with us having
a biased opinion,” said
Holoien.
Murray and Holoien met
five years ago and built a bromance over news. Both are
self-proclaimed news junkies
who want to use their voice to
make an impact on their demographic of “18 to 40 year
olds and cute girls over 19.” “Have you heard a conversation between two 18 year
old girls? It’s ridiculous,” said
Holoien. “It’s Kylie Jenner and
it’s garbage. Our main goal is
to make young people interested in news.”
“Looking back when I was
younger we were just talking
about Sonic Youth and Rage
Against The Machine,” added
Murray. “I wish I would have
been interested in topical issues.
“I don’t think young people
nowadays realize the kind of
difference they can make. And
second of all, how interesting
news can be. There’s nothing
better than talking to people
about ISIS.”
The two film about three
shows a week that average
seven minutes in length. Their
studio is in a garage that’s attached to a house that still has
its Halloween decorations up.
They’re hoping to one day
switch locations.
With nearly 1,000 likes on
their YouTube channel OMJ is
looking to grow and get more
guests on their show. Their
ideal guest would be MP Tom
Lukiwski or Mayor Deb Higgins, who likes their Facebook
page already.
As of now, the men behind
OMJ define their success rate
at 90 per cent.

Quint was born September 18,
1926, the second oldest child in a
family of 5, on the Swanson
homestead in the Lake Valley
district. Quint attended Livingstone
School northeast of Brownlee,
completing grade 11. The family
moved to a farm in the Keeler
district in 1943 and Quint farmed
and resided there until 2013 when
failing health prompted the move to
Providence Place. Predeceased by his parents Reckard
and Gertie, 1 brother, and son-in-law Albert West, Quint is
survived by his wife of 62 years, Yvonne; daughter Judy
West, grandchildren Kerry and Russell; daughter Wanda
Jones (Brent), grandchildren Blair and Jasmyn; son Kevin
Swanson (Kerry), grandchildren Amanda and Brett and
two great-granddaughters Kelsee and Sydnee Christmann.
A private celebration of Quinton's life will be held at a later
date. Flowers are gratefully declined. In living memory of

Forrest Robert "Bob" Schultz,
aged 87 years of Moose Jaw, SK,
passed away Tuesday, July 14th,
2015 with his loving family by his
side. Bob was born in Moose
Jaw, SK and spent all of his life
here. He grew up in Moose Jaw
and worked at Johnstone Dairies.
Following that, he was employed
by the C.P.R. as a fireman and
engineer. He went to work at
Moose Jaw Hardware and then
Ashdowns. Bob later went into
partnership with Ray Ghiglione
and Reg Parker to buy Ashdowns
and worked there until his retirement in 1996. He was
predeceased by his father, Fred and mother, Daisey; as
well as by 11 brothers and sisters. Bob leaves to mourn:
his wife, Laura; children: Bob (Rhonda) Schultz, Tim
(Gail) Schultz, Lorrie (Gary) Straub, Patricia Paul (Greg
Paul - deceased) and Kathy (Robert) Thorneycroft; 14
grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; sister, Francis and
Ron McCarthy; brother, Ralph and Pat Schultz; sister,
Darlene Vestre; sister-in-law, Dorothy Staseson; as well as
many special nieces and nephews. Bob was an active
member in his church at Emmanuel Lutheran. He enjoyed
singing in the Gospel Choir. He enjoyed fishing with his
son-in-law Gary and morning coffee breaks with Ray
Ghiglione and Lawrence Temple. Bob volunteered for
many years at Providence Place and was noted for his
talent for pouring a good drink. Bob and Laura spent
winter holidays in Palm Springs, visited Germany,
Australia, South America and Hawaii, and travelled with
good friends to the Maritimes.
He formed great
friendships. Bob was a great husband and father, and
was loved deeply by his children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren with whom he had many pleasant
memories.
A Memorial Service will be held on
Thursday, July 23rd, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Emmanuel
Lutheran Church, 15 Paul Drive, Moose Jaw, SK with
Reverend John Kreutzwieser officiating.
As an

After a full life of 88 years, Ron passed away Thursday,
July 2, 2015 at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Born at
the family homestead, Elim Farms near Grenfell, SK. Ron
grew up in the farming community with his parents and
brother Dennis. On July 10, 1949 he married his
sweetheart, Ethel Annie Hewitt, Ron is predeceased by
their infant daughter Rhonda, grandson Colton White,
granddaughter Maranda Reeve and brother Dennis Reeve.
Ron is survived by his bride of 66 years Ethel, sons
Warren, Barry (Gerri), Randy (Margo), Kelly (Karen), Rick
(Michelle), daughter Lori White (Ron) and their families,
including 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Ron loved visiting with family and friends at home, at
Buffalo Pound Lake, and at the Anavets. He enjoyed
playing pool, working in the garden and watching the Blue
Jays play. Ron was an avid reader, and also had a few
stories of his own to tell. We will celebrate his life and
honour his memory at a Memorial Tea to be held on
Friday, July 24, 2015, at 2:00 pm, in the Redpath

Kenneth Bruce Bookout was
born March 4, 1949 in Moose
Jaw, SK and was taken from us
suddenly on July 16, 2015 while
enjoying his summer paradise in
the Shuswaps.
Ken resided in Moose Jaw where
he worked for the C.P Rail as a
conductor for 36 years. Ken had a
love for all sports but his
particular passion was hockey.
You could always find #35 in the
net playing for his "Reds" or the Crusty Canucks. Through
all the sports and recreation, Booker made many lifelong
friends that he held very dearly in his heart. His role as
family social convener kept him busy, he loved to plan
family coffee dates and after his mother's death his
mission became to keep the family strongly connected.
Nothing was more evident than the pride and joy he
possessed when spending time with his 7 beautiful
grandchildren, to which he was affectionately known as
Grampsky. Kenny B's heart belonged to his girls, Gaye,
Amber, Stacey, and Allison, but for the last 22 years he
inherited a son and best friend in Ryan. The rink, the lake
and life itself will never be the same, but his legacy as a
man will never be forgotten.
Ken is survived by his wife and best friend Gaye;
daughters Amber (Danny), Stacey (Ryan), Alli (Chad) and
grandchildren Sierra, Sidney, Isabella, Elizabeth,
Alexander, Gabrielle and Grayson; brother Lou (Karen);
sisters Donna (Glen), Jackie, Robbie (Joe); sister-in-law
Shelley (Allan) and brother-in-law Ron (Gail); many loving
nieces, nephews, their spouses and children. He is
predeceased by his father Joseph Harold (Pete), mother
Hazel Annie Marie, nephew Jordan and lifelong friend
Jimmy Miller.
A memorial service will be held on the goal line at Mosaic
Place at 7 PM on Saturday, July 25th, 2015. Anyone who
would like to pay their respects is welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that you take an
opportunity to "Pay It Forward".

Christine was born in
Kunzendorf, Czechoslovakia on
November 17th, 1924. She came
to Canada and married Walter in
1955 and they purchased their
farm south of Moose Jaw in 1961.
Mom and Dad loved fishing,
bowling and their trips to Europe
and
Hawaii.
She
was
predeceased by her husband
Walter in 1999. Christine will be
missed by son, Joe (Roberta) and granddaughter, Karrin.

keeping with Christine's wishes, a Private Family

On Saturday, July 18th, 2015, Ivan
passed away at the Moose Jaw
Union Hospital. He was raised on
the family farm at Sturgis, SK.
Ivan received his education at the
Sturgis elementary and high
schools, where he took great
interest in writing and debating.
He remained passionate in his
beliefs. He was predeceased by
his father, Nick, of Penticton BC in
1991. Ivan is survived by his
mother, Rose - Penticton, BC; son,
Rick (Lindsey) and daughter, Karen, both of Yorkton, SK;
brother, Tom - Terrace, BC; sister, Lyla (Tom) - Calgary,
AB; brother, Gene - Sherwood Park, AB; as well as many
family members and friends. Ivan lived for the outdoors,
and probably forgot more about nature than most of us
would ever know. His shooting and hunting skills were
exemplary and resulted in many trophies which adorned
his walls. Ivan also enjoyed fishing, hiking, writing and
taking moonlight walks on deserted country dirt roads,
always with camera in hand. He found joy in singing
songs from the '60's and knew them by heart. Ivan
enjoyed cooking and took great pride in his garlic recipes,
which he claimed were legendary! His quick wit, sense of
humour and ability to make others laugh made everyone
who knew him comfortable and welcomed. At a later
date, interment will take place in Penticton, BC. Those
so wishing may make a donation in Ivan's name to The
Canadian Diabetes Association, 917A Albert St, Regina,
SK S4R 2P6 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Sask,
279 3rd Ave N, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8.

Zabolotney, in his 98th year. He
was predeceased by his parents,

Everly. George is survived by his
son Robert (Darlene) of Airdrie,
daughter Sherry of Moose Jaw,
grandson Dean (Jessica) of Airdrie
and their daughter Claire, granddaughter Meghen (Terry
Boehmer) of Airdrie and their sons Benjamin and Cole,
siblings Evelyn Krowchenko of Saskatoon, Howard (Lilian)
of Assiniboia, Gladys of Moose Jaw and numerous nieces
and nephews. George was born at the farm at Viceroy,
where he grew up and farmed with his father for a few
years. It was when he met the new schoolteacher,
Margaret, that he knew she was "the one" for him. They
were married on October 30, 1941, and farmed in the
Tilney/Briercrest district where they were both very active
in the community. In 1975, they retired to Moose Jaw
and joined Minto United Church. Music was always a
favourite pastime, from playing in the Viceroy Jubilee
Band, to playing for dances around Briercrest, to being an
active member of Band City Band for many years in
Moose Jaw. Wednesday night concerts in the park were
enjoyed for many summers. With declining health,
George moved into Providence Place in November, 2013.
The family would like to thank all the staff, but especially
the many caregivers, RNs, recreation workers and
volunteers who demonstrated such dedicated and tender
care; particularly in his final days. The Funeral Service
will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. in
Parkview Funeral Chapel. Glenys Grosenick will officiate
and interment will take place at Sunset Cemetery. In lieu
of flowers, donations in George's name may be made to
Minto United Church, 1036-7th Ave. NW, Moose Jaw, SK,
