ABOUT METHODIST HEALTH SYSTEM FOUNDATION
Guided by the founding principles of life, learning, and compassion, Dallas-based Methodist Health System

2015 CROSSROADS ANNUAL REPORT
“An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the
same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”
DEAR FRIENDS,
This is Sir Isaac Newton’s first law of motion. He was talking about inanimate
objects, of course, but the words seem to apply well to our own lives. We’ve all
had moments when we’ve felt like we’re in constant motion, moving at a pace
beyond our control. We’ve also had moments when we’ve felt stuck in place and
welcomed a push in a new direction.
Whatever the season in life, this truth holds: We stop or step forward only because
something moves us to do so.
This year’s Crossroads features members of our Methodist Health System Foundation
family sharing about the “forces” that have moved them, not only in their
personal and professional lives but also in their service and stewardship to Methodist.
Some are motivated to save lives, while others desire to meet the needs of the
underserved. Some are inspired by the memory of a loved one, others by a deep faith.
But in these pages, you’ll find more than these stories. You’ll also find a challenge
to discern for yourself what moves you. The answer is personal, but it might reveal,
as it has for so many others, that what moves you every day also moves us here
at Methodist. Providing for others, serving a purpose greater than ourselves,
achieving excellence, remembering those who have gone before us — these are
all part of who we are.
Whatever moves you to be a part of our Methodist family, we’re grateful to serve
alongside you. Thank you for helping us to move North Texas toward a brighter,
healthier future.

moves us
WHAT
Inspiration to give is personal. Here are just a
few ways our donors have been moved to give.
HONORING MY FATHER
As a little girl, Sylvia Hargrave, MD, FACS, worked
in her father’s dental office after school. Sylvester
Hargrave, DDS, encouraged his daughter’s love
of science and unknowingly inspired her pursuit
of medicine.
“He died when I was 14, and I think of him every
day. When I was invited to give to the Charles A.
Sammons Tower campaign for emergency and
trauma care, I knew I wanted to give the same
amount my dad needed to buy his first office
building. It felt good to come full circle — that
his daughter was able to use that same amount to
give back to someone else, in this case a medical
community that has supported me and that is
now verified in Level I trauma care.”
Sylvia HargravE, MD, FACS
Ophthalmologist, Methodist Dallas Medical Center
SERVING THE POOR
Ever since their youth, Carolyn and David Neal have
had a heart for Methodist Health System’s Golden
Cross ministry, which provides charity care to the
unemployed and underinsured.
“As we were growing up, we knew many people
who were in unfortunate situations, and Golden
Cross was always there for them. This ministry
moves us. No one should have to go without the
medications and care they need, and we’re grateful
to play a role in ensuring that they don’t.”

SERVANT LEADERSHIP
Allie Beth Allman’s real estate background has
connected her to people all over Dallas–Fort Worth,
but among the most impressive people she’s met are
the leaders and physicians at Methodist Health System.
“I thought, ‘If these people are sold on Methodist
and if they feel like they can do good here,
then there must be something great about it.’
And they were right. The health system is run so
professionally, and I was so impressed with the
doctors and their efforts to provide top-level care.
Now my goal is to make my contacts aware of
Methodist and all it has done for Dallas.”
Allie Beth Allman

LEAVING A LEGACY
A desire to get involved in her community is what
led Mary Cochran to give her time to the BrightER
capital campaign committee for the Charles A.
Sammons Tower a few years ago. But a desire to
honor the memory of her late cousin, Bradley Taylor
Couch, is what led her to become a donor.
“I wanted to honor Bradley in some way, but
it’s hard to find something special enough to
honor someone as giving and kind as he was.
Having learned how much Methodist Health
System is a pillar of light in the community, I
knew supporting the BrightER campaign was a
great way to let his legacy of helping others in
need live on.”

2015 CROSSROADS ANNUAL REPORT / TRAUMA CARE
save lives
MOVED TO
On Oct. 16, 2013, Corey Dooley, then only 15 years old, learned
how far he’d go for someone he loves. It’s the night that domestic
violence changed his life.
As his mother, Nicole Rishard, pulled into their garage that evening, Corey’s stepfather snuck in behind the
car and shot at her, Corey, and her younger son, Cody. Corey instinctively turned to shelter his mother and
took four bullets — two to the back and two to the left hip. Another bullet hit Nicole in the arm.
Corey almost died, but the Methodist Dallas Medical Center trauma team, led that night by Michael S. Truitt,
MD, FACS, was determined to save his life. Two years later, Corey is living his dream of playing college football.
He heads off to Concordia University this fall.
Dr. Truitt says Methodist Health System Foundation plays an integral role in stories like Corey’s, particularly
with the new Charles A. Sammons Tower dedicated to emergency, trauma, and critical care. “The Sammons
Tower was a huge investment in resources that has given us everything we need to be a successful Level I Trauma
Center,” Dr. Truitt says. “You never know when another Corey Dooley is going to roll into the trauma bay,
but we’re more prepared than ever if he does.”
“Proverbs 4:25 says, ‘Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on
what lies before you.’ That scripture encourages me to use my
experience to help others. I hope my story reaches millions
of people and shows them the impact of domestic violence.”

“I love being able to care for people at the most critical time in
their lives and then see them not just go back to what they were
doing before but excel and thrive beyond my wildest expectations.”

meet needs
MOVED TO
For some people, knowing that someone is in need is enough
to inspire them to give of their time and resources. That was the
case for both Nita and John Ford and Elaine and Michael Redden,
longtime supporters of Methodist Health System Foundation.
The Fords grew up in Oak Cliff. They raised their children there and knew many of the physicians at what
is now Methodist Dallas Medical Center. When they learned in the mid-1990s that the hospital’s digestive
diseases program was in need of support, the couple didn’t hesitate. Thanks to their generosity, that program
has grown to include more physicians and technology, education facilities, a gastroenterology fellowship, and
now the newly established Methodist Digestive Institute.
As for the Reddens, they couldn’t resist a chance to meet the needs of the underserved, a cornerstone of Methodist
Health System’s mission. Through the Methodist Dallas Golden Cross Academic Clinic, the Foundation
supports various programs to help the underserved in our community, and just last year, Methodist provided
$109.2 million in unreimbursed charity care.
“In 2003, Pete Schenkel strongly suggested it would be worthwhile to get involved with Methodist, that I
would not be disappointed,” Michael recalls. “I agree with him more today than I did 13 years ago. The closer
you get, the more you see and the more convinced you become.”
“We already had a lot of confidence in the people here
from our friendships, but that confidence has continued to
grow over the years. It’s overwhelming to see the compassion
and Christian ethics brought to patient care at Methodist.”
Nita FORD and
John Ford
Methodist Health System Foundation Board of Trustees
“The commitment of the hospital to serve the less fortunate
is the primary driver that attracts me. To the people at
Methodist, it’s clearly visible that this is more than a job.
It’s a mission and a ministry.”
Michael Redden
Former Vice Chairman, Grand Bank

communities
MOVED TO BUILD
Back in March 2013, a group gathered at Methodist Mansfield
Medical Center to discuss the construction of a much-needed
new patient care tower. But this wasn’t a day to talk about
building plans or budgets or timelines. It was a day for creating
a covenant.
“The entire team was involved, from the Methodist Mansfield leaders to the design consultants to the
constructors,” recalls Dominick Calabrese, operations manager at The Beck Group. “We formed a culture where
every decision revolved around what’s right for the patient.”
This culture resonated with 11 of the contracting companies in particular: Alliance Glass and Mirror, Ltd.;
Anton Cabinetry; The Beck Group; Capform Inc.; Cummings Electrical; DD&F Commercial Flooring;
Impact Professional Group; Lasco Acoustics and Drywall, Inc.; RTKL Associates Inc.; TDIndustries; and WSP/
ccrd. Together they made a generous donation to the Tower Two Capital Campaign in honor of Mansfield
City Manager Clayton Chandler.
“In our business, we have the opportunity to build a lot of really
cool projects, but every so often, we get to build communities.
That community focus is where the mission of our business and
the mission of Methodist Mansfield come together.”
Tim McNew
Senior Vice President, TDIndustries
“Cummings Electrical has four cornerstones, one of which is ‘Do the
right thing,’ and part of doing the right thing is giving back to our
community with our time and our resources. In this case, that meant
going the extra mile and giving back to a project that really impacts
so many lives in our community.”
Scott Smith
Vice President, Cummings Electrical
“If you walk through the hospital with Methodist Mansfield President
John Phillips, you see he has a passion about delivering the best care
possible to patients. His attitude was infectious, and I saw our group
donation as a way of supporting him and his mission to serve.”

T
o say that Tarrant County’s
population is on the rise is
an understatement. When
Methodist Mansfield Medical
Center opened its doors in late
2006, the county had 1.663 million residents.
The projection for its 2015 population was 1.96
million. That’s almost 300,000 more people
in need of medical care than a decade ago.
Moved to make sure that Methodist Mansfield
had the space and technology to continue
to serve this and the surrounding growing
communities, the Methodist Health System
board of directors approved a $118 million
expansion of the hospital. The 208,000-squarefoot, 118-bed Tower Two, completed last
December, expanded the hospital’s economic
impact in Mansfield to $293 million. The
tower also features the brand-new Amon G.
Carter Foundation Heart and Vascular Center.
Named for one of the tower’s most generous
benefactors, the center gives a stronger presence
to the hospital’s award-winning cardiac care.
“The Amon G. Carter Foundation commends Methodist for its
vision and commitment to establish Methodist Mansfield 10 years ago.
We were pleased to support the Tower Two Capital Campaign and look
forward to seeing the nearby communities thrive with
Methodist Mansfield at their service.”

The Methodist Mansfield Medical Center Tower Two grand
opening celebration on Dec. 17, 2015, included community and
health system leaders, as well as many donors to Methodist
Health System Foundation, without whom this facility — and
the lifesaving, life-changing care it brings — would not be
possible. Here is a brief look back at that day and some of the
donors who were moved to support Tower Two.

to serve
MOVED BY A MISSION
Steve Van Amburgh, David McAtee, and Bruce Sammis all came
to know Methodist Health System through the Robert S. Folsom
Leadership Award. The reason they’ve stayed connected,
however, is because they stand for service.
Steve puts it best when he says, “The thing that inspires me is the same thing that inspires everyone at Methodist
Health System: When you get up every day, all you really want to do is serve others well.”
While all three gentlemen have served in various capacities both in the corporate world and in the community,
they’ve now chosen to direct their support and service toward healthcare. “In law and in business, we embrace
the same sort of concepts as in the healthcare world, but it’s never on an issue as important as life or death,”
David says. “There is no area more interesting and, in some ways, more challenging than healthcare, especially
healthcare for the underserved.”
“I like to hope that I live on this earth not to be served but to
serve others. I see that same philosophy embodied at Methodist.
The people there truly live out their value of Servant Heart
and embody what it means to be selfless and humble.”
Steve Van Amburgh
CEO, KDC Real Estate Development & Investments
“Over the next 20 years, what could be more important to our
society than getting healthcare right? It really motivates me to
be a part of charting Methodist’s course.”
David McAtee
Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel, AT&T Inc.
Methodist Health System Board of Directors
“Methodist has a powerful influence on our communities,
and I want to do everything in my power to help them
remain at the forefront of healthcare and support their
mission to improve and save lives.”

“Bob Folsom impacted our community in many ways, but one way he
directly impacted me was to open my eyes and my mind to the idea of
volunteering and to serve our community in public office. To this day,
I’m inspired by his example and am humbled to be honored with an
award bearing his name.”

MOVED TO GIVE KIDS
“This smiling, laughing, Princess Bride–loving gentleman has
been known a time or two to embrace the thrill of victory.”
Gary Cogill used these words to describe Jack Lowe Jr., the 2015 Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award recipient,
at the Oct. 14, 2015, event in his honor. The words reflect Jack’s jovial nature and his love of movies, but more
important, they describe a man who knows that there are some fights you cannot — in fact, must not — lose.
One of those is the fight for a child’s healthy future.
“I have long been an advocate of education and of giving everyone a fair chance to fully participate in the possibilities our wonderful country provides,” Jack said in his acceptance speech that evening. “Without interventions,
children of poverty are much less well prepared than their non-poverty peers.”
Because of Jack’s desire to overcome some of the hardships children face, the funds netted from the event in his
honor — a generous $1.3 million — benefit two programs at the Methodist Dallas Medical Center Golden
Cross Academic Clinic. The first program is CenteringPregnancy®, which has successfully lowered the preterm
birth rate of the young mothers participating to 5.7 percent since it started in 2008. The second is the new
CenteringParenting®, which will help first-year parents take the proper steps for their children’s well-being.
Among the key supporters of this event were our Leadership Circle donors. Having generously donated $10,000
or more, these donors were invited to a private patron party on Oct. 12 in Century Hall at Old Parkland.
The Folsom event welcomed a record 820 guests to the Hilton Anatole’s Grand Ballroom, where they were
treated to an evening personalized with all things Jack. A tribute video titled Jackman was a clever play off an
iconic comic book hero and showcased how Jack had achieved victories in his professional life and community
service. His grandchildren even donned Jackman capes and masks and performed a dance routine to celebrate
their grandfather’s award.
In honor of Robert S. Folsom
The Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award was created in 2005 to recognize people whose demonstrated
commitment and excellence in community leadership emulate the achievements of former Dallas Mayor
Robert S. Folsom. Recipients are selected for their accomplishments in making a lasting, positive change in
the Dallas community and inspiring others to follow in their paths.
